Rob de Castella truly needs no introduction but here it goes anyway. Deek is a genuine Aussie icon. A 4 time Olympic marathoner, 2 time Commonwealth Gold medalist, Australian of the Year and still the National marathon record holder with an astonishing 2:07:51. These days Deek is pouring his time and effort into empowering our Indigenous population through his program the Indigenous Marathon Project and promoting a life changing diet initiative through Deek's Health Foods. Haddy has the honour of chatting with Deek and they discuss the state of Aussie and World distance running, the ingredients required to produce the next Aussie marathon legend and how to capitalise on our current recreational running boom. We also speculate on the times Deek would have run in a pair of 'super shoes', determine the optimum amount of pre-race beers and uncover the entry criteria to the Aussie Sporting Icon 'Tash' Club. I recently had former Managing Director of the ABC on the pod where we spoke about the current state of Australian media. This episode was an opportunity to hear from someone who has sat on the other side of the fence, John Hartigan, former Chair and CEO of News Limited. John has sat in many chairs and our paths have crossed on the board of Paralympics Australia and in our work with the Indigenous Marathon Project.
With what seems to be an everlasting dominance of African athletes in long-distance running events, it's hard to believe that Australia's own Rob de Castella was the world-record holder over the marathon distance in the 1980s. Rob set the world record in 1981 and represented Australia at four Olympic Games, won two Commonwealth Games marathon races and was Australia's first track and field world champion. The 1983 Australian of the Year (one up on Kurt!) Rob is known in more recent years for his passionate drive to see running change the lives of Australian Indigenous communities through the Indigenous Marathon Project.

Robert DeCastella is an International Sporting legend. He set the World Record for the Marathon in 1981, competed in four consecutive olympic games, took Gold at two commonwealth games, won the boston marathon, & set a city to surf record that stood for ten straight years. He's also a remarkable man who's focused his life after competition on helping others. Not only through his time as Director of the AIS, but now as Director of the Indigenous Marathon Project. Australian Indigenous Issues are very important to me, as you'll probably guess from listening to this show - so it's always a thrill when I can get a guest on who can shed light on this - an issue so great that we as a nation have a chance to make things right, and we can do it in our lifetimes if we want to. http://imf.org.au See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Many retired elite runners have found meaningful ways to give back to the sport to which they gave so much of themselves. One such runner is Australian marathoner Rob de Castella. Known as a fierce competitor who never gave an inch to anyone, Rob raced marathons so hard that he often needed several months after a marathon to fully recover and be ready to race again. Rob trained in almost exactly the same way under the same coach for the best part of 15 years. His training system is a model for many Australian runners and coaches today. However, Rob is best known these days for his work with the Indigenous Marathon Project, a program that trains indigenous Australians (or “aborigines”) for races around Australia and ultimately the New York City Marathon. A few of the topics we discussed included: The training program that took Rob to World Championship medals and world records in the marathon
Today we switch gears a bit. How?This time the interviewer becomes the interviewee. Why? In just a few days (May 21st to be exact), the paperback version of Finding Ultra* hits bookstores — front table placement at Barnes & Noble! — or so I've been told….I'll believe it when I see it — and online retailers. It's quite an honor that I am even getting a paperback release at all, and I want to make the most of the rare opportunity. On that note, my publisher thought it might be fun to have someone interview me for a change. Not to ask the same old questions I'm always asked, but to kind of go beyond the typical “Where do you get your protein?” line of inquiry and delve deeper. I must admit I wasn't to keen on the idea initially. This podcast isn't really about me, it's about my guests; I'm just the host. Then again, if I could find the right person to do it — somebody who knows me quite well and has something to really bring to the equation — then maybe it could be cool.Who?Well I found the right guy. Not only is Osher Günsberg a good friend, fellow plant-eater, marathon runner / aspiring ultra-runner and all-around cool dude, he's also a professional host. Those Down Under likely know this swarthy, handome and dynamic gentleman as ” Andrew G. ” — host of Australian Idol (Australia's version of American Idol) and from an array of other radio and television programs in both Australia and here in the U.S., including the CBS show Live To Dance, which he co-hosted with Paula Abdul. In addition, he is a proud supporter of the Indigenous Marathon Project, which provides an opportunity for Indigenous men and women of Autralia to run the New York Marathon, which is not only inspiring but helps encourage healthy, active lifestyles.A long way of saying he is total pro. And in this interview, it shows. Then there is this little matter of how — in the right light — we can appear to look somewhat similar. Don't believe me? Check the Instagram I posted the other day — it's over the top; although he is admittedly far more handsome and charming than I. Dopplegänger Günsberg. Forgive the phrase — I know it sounds like everyone's favorite hair band. I guess I just wanted to write two words in a row with a diaeresis. What For Again?I feel weird asking people to buy the paperback. I'm sure the majority of you listeners out there have already read my book – you have, right? RIGHT?? But then again, who knows? Maybe you haven't. Maybe you just stumbled upon this blog and podcast out of the blue. So here is an opportunity to learn a bit more about me, why I wrote the book and what I hoped to express.Oh yeah, there's also this little matter of admitting that I would like to move some units. Maybe even make the NY Times Bestseller List for Non-Fiction Paperbacks- a list I narrowly missed with the hardcover r... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Australian marathon legend Rob de Castella joined Martin all the way from down under to talk all about his amazing running career and the great work he's doing with his Indigenous Marathon Project. Tom enjoyed 5 by a km with his Dad, Martin raved about the Frankfurt marathon... and Tony ran 100 miles... or did he?
