If you find yourself daydreaming about living in the countryside, growing tulips, and having a farmstand… well, you’re not alone. It’s not something that only happens in the movies, but it takes more work than the movies let on. Welcome back as we highlight specialty crops across Wisconsin and the growers who make it happen. Today we’re visiting with Erin Avila-Vissers at Four Acres Flowers in DeForest. She turned this dream into a reality, even though the rest of her family was a little apprehensive at first. After planting 1,000 tulips by hand over the past few years, her dream of being a full-time flower farmer is only getting closer. There's hopes new legislation will protect the most productive farmland. The rule change will stop Category 1 to 5 land being converted into forestry. Those with category 6 land will only be allowed to convert 15 thousand hectares. Federated Farmers forestry spokesperson Toby Williams told Mike Hosking that it restores the balance between farming and production forestry, and makes sure they're playing on an even field. He says they've been working on for three or four years with the National Party, and it's really answered their calls. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

FARM Environmental Stewardship Version 3 is out – and it's a step forward for dairy farmers both as stewards and as business managers, according to NMPF Chief Sustainability Officer Nicole Ayache, who oversaw development of the initiative through the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program, in a Dairy Defined Podcast released today. With new, updating modeling, under FARM ES Version 3, “farmers can actually run scenarios to assess practice or technology changes, see how those would impact their greenhouse gas emissions, and any potential impact on milk productivity as well,” Ayache said. “The scenarios, being able to project what-ifs, is the biggest benefit.”The FARM Program is a partnership between NMPF and Dairy Management Inc. that helps ensure dairy's success by demonstrating U.S. dairy farmer commitment to safe, high-quality, high-integrity milk. FARM ES Version 3 took effect Oct. 31.For more information on FARM ES Version 3, visit the FARM Program website.

Ellie and Dan started their farm in 2020 during the early months of the pandemic. Ellie has a background in psychology and works part-time in the mental health field and Dan is a certified arborist and carpenter… skills that have undoubtedly helped their recent transition into starting a farm and homestead with a focus on year-round production and building community. Farming on one acre with three high-tunnels, they prioritize building soil using primarily no-till methods, and they experiment with finding the best ways their bodies, the land, and their business can benefit and grow from these choices. Water restrictions in California will cause large acreages of farm land to be fallowed, potentially producing nothing. Fortunately a new crop is being introduced that uses very little water, making more available for thirstier tree, vine and row crops. That new crop, a new spirit, is California Agave. Stuart Woolf has been to Mexico and brought back Agave plants that are planted and flourishing in the Central Valley. It's turning out that California is ideal for Agave production. That's good news for Sean Venus, of Venus Distilling in Santa Cruz who is distilling California Agave Spirits and is representative of progressive distillers who see a promising future for California's newest crop, a great spirit. www.woolffarming.com venusspirits.com californiaagave.org

2024 will be an important year for America's farmers and ranchers. Micheal Clements tells us the American Farm Bureau Federation is focused on the passage of a new farm bill. Clements: The American Farm Bureau Federation has a myriad of policy priorities for the new year. AFBF President Zippy Duvall says the top priority is getting a Farm Bill passed in 2024. Duvall: Well, it's critical that Congress pass a bipartisan farm bill early this year. We can't afford any further delays in getting an updated farm bill that would address our modern challenges facing our farmers and ranchers across America. The Farm Bill matters well beyond the farm. It addresses food security, sustainability to nutrition programs, and all of these programs benefit the nation as a whole. Clements: AFBF will host the American Farm Bureau Convention January 19-24 in Salt Lake City, where other 2024 priorities will be established. Duvall: The priorities will be determined by our voting delegates later this month at our annual convention in Salt Lake City, but we will continue to work with Congress to address the labor challenges facing our farmers. We have a labor shortage and unsustainable wage rate hikes that really are the biggest limiting factor to the growth of American agriculture. We also need to create new and expand the current trade agreements, and we have resolved to keep defending farms and ranches from the burdensome overreach of regulations from our federal government. Clements: Duvall says there's still time to plan your trip to attend Farm Bureau's annual convention. Duvall: At this convention, it'll give them a great opportunity to hear from inspirational speakers, fellowship with other Farm Bureau members, and even become a new member of our organization. We have a great story to share about agriculture and that story will be on full display at Salt Lake City. Clements: To learn more and to register for the American Farm Bureau Convention, go to fb.org. Micheal Clements, Washington.
