The biggest buzz at the London Marathon this year wasn't just the racing, it was around Nomio. It's a performance shot used by athletes like Cole Hocker and Conner Mantz. Nomio is used before their key sessions and races, whether it's breaking the American Marathon record or getting WC gold in Tokyo. If you want to check it out yourself, it's at drinknomio.com and if you're in Australia or New Zealand, you can find it at Aid Station, and over at The Running Company. This weekend's interview on the Inside Running Podcast, Brad Croker sits down with Olympic silver medallist Evan Jager for an in-depth conversation on one of the most unique careers in distance running. Evan Jager is one of America's most accomplished distance runners, best known for his dominance in the 3000m steeplechase. An Olympic silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Games, Jager broke a 28-year-old American record in the event and became a consistent force on the global stage, regularly competing against the world's best. Coached for much of his career by Jerry Schumacher as part of the Bowerman Track Club, Jager has also claimed multiple U.S. national titles and represented the United States at several World Championships and Olympic Games. Known for his smooth hurdling technique and tactical racing, he remains one of the most respected steeplechasers of his generation. After winning his second straight World Indoor 3000m title in Torun, Kerr sat down with LetsRun.com to lay out his plan to break the 27-year-old mark of 3:43.13 at the London Diamond League on July 18th. He wants a negative split, he's picking his own pacers, and he's not moving the race if it rains. Kerr talks race field politics, whether Cole Hocker or Jakob Ingebrigtsen could crash the party, the mile vs. 1500 debate, his bicarb usage, the rise of Western milers, and what it would mean to join Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, and Steve Cram as a British mile world record holder. He said it was his to lose. Then he went out and made sure of it.Josh Kerr is back on The Running Effect, and this time he's not limping off a global stage. He's walking out of Toruń with gold, and already calling his next shot.At the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, Kerr reclaimed the 3000m title he first won two years ago in Glasgow. He ran a 7:35.56, the second-fastest winning time in World Indoor Championships history. February brought his return: a 2-mile against Cole Hocker at Millrose, a second-place finish that felt more like reconnaissance than defeat. He knew what was coming. Before Toruń, he called the title his to lose. On March 21, he backed it up, settling patiently, surging at the bell, making himself the target, and winning by 0.14 seconds. Now the next target is on the clock.Project 222. On July 18 at the London Diamond League, Kerr will attempt to break Hicham El Guerrouj's mile world record of 3:43.13, a mark that has stood since 1999. The goal: 222 seconds flat. A 3:42 mile. His current PB of 3:45.34 is the British record and sixth all-time. Two seconds separates him from history. Tap into the Josh Kerr Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! The World Athletics Indoor Championships descend on Toruń, Poland this weekend. Here's your event-by-event preview via Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia.- Men's 60m: Defending champion Jeremiah Azu faces the deepest field in recent memory, led by American Jordan Anthony (world list leader, 6.43) and Jamaica's Kishane Thompson (6.46).- Women's 60m: Julien Alfred vs. Zaynab Dosso, both at 6.99 and both in career form. Alfred seeks history as a two-time world indoor champion; Dosso has silver and bronze but never gold.- Men's 60m hurdles: A three-way tie at 7.37 between Poland's unbeaten home favorite Jakub Szymański and Americans Dylan Beard and Trey Cunningham, with three-time defending champion Grant Holloway absent for the first time in years.- Women's 60m hurdles: Devynne Charlton can become the first woman to win three consecutive world indoor titles in the event, having won in Glasgow and Nanjing. Swiss world champion Ditaji Kambundji has been just 0.01 behind her twice this season.- Men's 400m: Two of the three fastest short-track 400m runners ever, Khaleb McRae (world record pending, 44.52) and Christopher Morales Williams (44.49 all-time best, unratified), meet in a new split-final format using only lanes 3 to 6.- Women's 400m: Several top seeds are absent, opening the door wide for Norway's Henriette Jæger and the Netherlands' Lieke Klaver, who beat Jæger at last year's European Indoors.- Men's 800m: Belgium's Eliott Crestan enters as the top seed chasing history, but American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus, just 17, set a world U20 short-track record of 1:44.03 last month and could become the youngest men's 800m medalist in World Indoor Championships history.- Women's 800m: Keely Hodgkinson is the story of the meet. The British Olympic champion broke a 24-year-old world record last month, running 1:54.87 on the very day she was born. Three injuries have kept her from the World Indoors. She finally arrives healthy and dangerous.- Men's 1500m: World champion Isaac Nader looks to finally convert after two consecutive fourth-place finishes, chasing Portugal's first title here since 2001. Dutch 800m specialist Sam Chapple brings a dangerous finishing kick.- Women's 1500m: Georgia Hunter Bell leads a deep field stacked against Ethiopia's three-athlete squad, with Nikki Hiltz's big kick a wildcard in the final lap.- Men's 3000m: The entire Paris Olympic 1500m podium, Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, and Yared Nuguse, races together, making this arguably the meet's marquee event.- Women's 3000m: Freweyni Hailu is chasing a third straight world indoor distance title, representing a broader Ethiopian dynasty that has won 10 of the last 12 world indoor 3000m crowns.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez + Preet Majithia | @preet_athleticsProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop's Tropical Punch tastes like a vacation in a can. This week on the Free Outside Podcast, I'm joined by Allison Mercer to talk about one of the strangest weekends the running world has seen in a while.Allison was in Atlanta covering the US Half Marathon Championships, but before the reporting even started she paced a marathon, took a hard fall at mile 16, finished the race covered in blood, and ended up getting stitches. Somehow that still wasn't the craziest thing that happened. We break down the controversy from the championship race where the lead women followed a vehicle the wrong direction late in the race, how it affected the results, and why the reaction online got so heated. We also talk about what actually happened behind the scenes and why these situations are more complicated than they look on social media. After that we catch up on everything else happening in running right now, Black Canyon course records, Western States storylines, FKTs starting to heat up for the season, and Allison somehow explaining Barkley and FKTs to Olympic champion Cole Hocker over breakfast. It's a mix of running news, chaos, and a little bit of perspective from two people who spend way too much time thinking about this sport. Thanks for watching and supporting the show.Support our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abChapters00:00 Marathon Weekend Recap03:45 Race Day Chaos and Injuries06:49 The Aftermath of the Race Incident10:01 Social Media Reactions and Accountability12:57 Understanding the Race Dynamics15:43 The Impact of the Incident on Athletes18:45 Community Response and Support21:50 Reflections on Empathy and Accountability24:47 Looking Ahead: Future Races and Events37:20 Emerging Trends in Running and Relatability40:48 Ultra Runner of the Year Predictions45:32 Growth of FKTs Globally52:21 The Race Purse Controversy56:40 Excitement for Race Season and RecommendationsSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

Cameron Hanes didn't inherit greatness. He built it: one mile, one arrow, one brutally consistent day at a time.  He wasn't a child prodigy hunter or a naturally gifted runner. He was a warehouse worker, a utility employee, and a guy who struggled through his first mile of running. And through obsession, discipline, and an uncompromising personal code, he became the man who can run 20 miles before breakfast, lift after work, shoot in the dark, and line up for the hardest ultras in the world, all while preaching a simple philosophy–earn it. The prominent bowhunter, endurance athlete, and author, known for his "Keep Hammering" philosophy is here, a man who epitomizes self-discipline and physical preparation. In terms of running, he has finished the Moab 240 (238 miles), the Bigfoot 200, and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. In 2025, he completed the Cocodona 250 in approximately 84 hours (and 18th place overall) and the Leadville Trail 100 in just over 24 hours. And he has some speed to boot: his mile PR is 5:18. Whether you are reaching your potential or someone who needs a higher standard, you won't want to miss this one. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia break down a chaotic weekend in American track and field headlined by a lead vehicle disaster at the USATF Half Marathon Championships and a slate of big results at the USATF Indoor Championships.Discussed:– The 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta were thrown into chaos when a lead vehicle guided the top women off course in the final mile with Jess McClain holding a big lead at the time. Molly Born, who stayed on course, won in 69:43. McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat all filed appeals immediately after.– USATF's jury of appeals acknowledged the course was inadequately marked but said it had “no recourse within the rulebook” to alter the results, which was a ruling that drew widespread backlash. Atlanta Track Club CEO Rich Kenah took full responsibility.–  Because the race served as the selection event for the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, the wrong turn didn't just cost the leaders prize money but also potentially cost them spots on Team USA. The selection situation is a tangled mess with no clean fix under current rules.– Cole Hocker won the men's 3,000m in a blanket finish in 7:39.25. Young missed the World Indoor team by .01 to Yared Nuguse after drifting off the rail in the home straight.– Emily Mackay won the women's 3,000m in a five-second personal best of 8:30.01, outkicking Elle St. Pierre in the final stretch for her first US title.– Hocker and Yared Nuguse then faded to 5th and 4th in Sunday's 1500m, won by former UW teammates Nathan Green and Luke Houser.– 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus went 5-for-5 as a professional, winning the men's 800m in 1:46.68 with a tactically sharp performance.– Nikki Hiltz extended their US title streak to eight, winning the women's 1500m in 4:11.34.– Jordan Anthony won the men's 60m in 6.45, beating Trayvon Bromell and Noah Lyles.Plus: Tokyo Marathon recap, the Louis Hinchcliffe NCAA return and the Iowa State/Seth Clevenger doping investigation.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez + Preet Majithia | @preet_athleticsProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: A blast from the past, Olipop's Shirley Temple combines smooth vanilla flavor with bright lemon and lime, finished with cherry juice for that nostalgic grenadine-like flavor. The 118th Millrose Games delivered a great show and we break it all down. But the biggest performance of the weekend was in Boston not Millrose as Sam Ruthe, just 16 years old, ran 3:48 in the mile to become the youngest man ever under 3:50 by more than a full year. Cam Myers dominated the Wannamaker Mile in 3:47, Colin Sahlman broke a 37-year-old NCAA 800m record with a 1:44.7 victory, and Cole Hocker looked every bit the world's best distance runner in winning the two mile. Meanwhile, Roisin Willis set the American indoor 800m record in Boston, Nikki Hiltz got a big win, and Cooper Luktenhaus added another high school record to his collection. But it wasn't all celebrations. Is Bryce Hoppel's window closing? Why can't Ollie Hoare find his form? Is Hobbs Kessler's injury excuse a relief or a red flag? The episode also digs into the controversial decision by World Athletics to invalidate Jacob Kiplimo's 56:42 half marathon world record due to drafting behind the lead vehicle. Plus: Is it good for young stars to experience defeat? Should Cam Myers skip World Indoors for a domestic meet? And what exactly happened with the Millrose pacing lights?

Who won? In global marathons 2025, several of the biggest races ended in near photo finishes. Here Benson Kipruto edges out Alexander Mutiso in the NYC Marathon. Kipruto became the first male marathoner to have won Boston, Chicago, and New York in his career. (Ingrid Kristiansen has achieved the Triple for females.)Other male marathon highlights: Sebastian Sawe won his second and third big marathons (London; Berlin) in three marathon starts, all with times in the low 2:02s. His 2:02:16 in Berlin, after extensive pre-race drug testing, was the fastest time of the year. And American Conner Mantz took a big chunk off the American Record for the marathon when he ran 2:04:43 at Chicago. On the women's side, Peres Jepchirchir won a thrilling World Championships Marathon in Tokyo, but then couldn't hold off Joyciline Jepkosgei in Valencia in December. Jepkosgei won there in 2:14:00, the fastest time of the year. The World Championships produced a surprising result in the men's 5000 and 10,000 when seven of the top ten finishers (including both winners) were NOT from East Africa. Cole Hocker picked up his second gold medal in two years, winning the 5000 in Tokyo after taking the 1500 in the Paris Olympics. In the women's springs, Melissa Jefferson Wooden was the standout of the year, winning almost everything she entered by a wide margin. For some reason we can't fathom, World Athletics didn't name her the top female speedster of the year, giving the nod to Sydney McLaughlin Levrone, who was sensational as always. But ...???And those high schoolers, OMG! A 16 year old high school sophomore from Texas, Cooper Lutkenhaus, finished second in the USATF National Champs 800 with a time of 1:42.27. That approaches the unimaginable. Jane Hedengren posted record performance after record performance in 2025, first as a high school runner in Utah, then as a first year student at BYU. Lutkenhaus and Hedengren are already being termed "generational talents" and they might hit that lofty peak in another year or two.Possibly the biggest story of the year, and a depressing one, was the implosion of Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track league. It didn't draw big fan crowds, and turned out not to have sufficient funds to pay all creditors. Now in bankruptcy court but claiming it hopes to continue, GST will continue as a big story in 2026.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. “You get these really unique matchups that you probably wouldn't get in the lead-up to a championship, but you can in a lead-up to Millrose because people are looking to race and have some fun.” - Grant FisherBuckle up because one of the greatest indoor matchups that we've ever seen is officially coming back to the Armory. Today's episode is all about a rematch that we already have to look forward to in 2026. Cole Hocker and Grant Fisher are stepping back onto that 200m track at the Armory for the 2026 Millrose Games. This time, for a 2-mile showdown.Last year, these two didn't just race over 3000m; they absolutely rewrote the history books. Grant Fisher dropped a world record of 7:22 and Cole Hawker was right behind him in 7:23. Both men went under the previous world record. Both men ran absolutely fearlessly. It set them up very well for strong 2025 outdoor campaigns. Now as we fast forward into 2026, Cole Hocker is heading into the new year as the Olympic champion in the 1500m and the reigning world champion at 5000m. Fisher is a double bronze medalist who spent all of 2025 sharpening one of the best closing kicks in the world. And instead of running back the same event at 3K, they're leveling up this time with the 2-mile and the perfect opportunity for these two to test their limits again. What makes this rivalry so electric is that they meet right in the middle of who they are as athletes. Cole Hocker, the swaggering closer who showed that he's unafraid to surge early and Grant Fisher, the diesel engine who can drag any field through at record-setting pace and then still have a gear at the bell. When these two collide, you don't just get a race; you get a moment. Millrose specializes in moments. We broke down the numbers to reach a much more nuanced conclusion that should help you feel better about it all. And that led to a broader discussion on the perils of advocacy being presented as science. We also talked about a shocking study on 45 asymptomatic people, which found labrum defects in 69% of hips! MRIs are complicated, unveiling mysteries of the human body and the strange line between structural and inflammatory issues. We discuss what it all means! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: recovery cake, Megan's beastly bike workout, our attempt to program AI with 22 sexy concepts in athletics, a study on actual v. planned carb intake in races, Courtney Dauwalter doing another marathon, a hypothetical about Cole Hocker in ultras, breaking up moderate running with sub-threshold intervals, how grief impacts training, energy deficits in multi-day events, preparing for heat, period parties, and when to FAFO.We love you all!
