Vici gets ready for this week's Perth half with Garmin telling her that she's peaking, whilst Simon finishes a full week of training after some gardening leave and rounding the week off with a sneaky WA Coastal Running Festival run that was definitely silly.  Thanks to everyone who has joined us on our community trail runs in the lead up to Transcend. She has a master's degree in history, with a concentration in the industrial history of the Lower Hudson Valley and specialization in the historical iron mines, forges, and furnaces that operated in the Ramapo Mountains from 1764 to 1888.Susan Deeks's presentation will take place Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 1:00 pm SHARP in the Lower-level Community Room, HSRC History Center, 20 Zukor Road, New City. Richard Law-Deeks is Chief Executive Officer of LGPS Central, which, following its current expansion, will be responsible for over 100 bn GBP in pooled local authority pension fund assets. Prior to joining LGPS Central in 2024 he was CEO of the Royal Mail Pensions Trustees Ltd. and prior to that held a series of financial roles, mostly within the local government sphere. We start our discussion with his early study of political science and the rooting in public service that came from his parents. We hear then about his various stepping stones to his current role, many of which involved steep learning curves, change - of both the positive (expansion) and negative (contraction) variety and the public service driver that underpinned many of them. We move then to his current role at LGPS Central, itself the center of huge structural change and we discuss in detail the governance complexities that the new structures present, but hear from Richard why he is very optimistic about the new provisions. We reflect on the enduring appeal of public service, the importance of coaching and what he considers to be his own leadership style. This is a rich and multi-layered discussion that is an honest assessment of the uncertainties that present a moments of great change and the tactics to push through them. This podcast is kindly sponsored by Benefit Street Partners and PIMCO. Anxiety as a Compass: Exploring Ikigai, Empathy, and Emotional Wellbeing with Catherine Deeks Gnocchi

Anxiety isn't a malfunction to be silenced; it's a message asking to be heard. We sit down with therapist and educator Catherine Deeks Gnocchi to rethink fear through the lenses of evolution, mindfulness-based psychotherapy, and Japanese ikigai—revealing how anxiety can guide you back to your values and toward a life that actually fits.Catherine breaks down the nervous system in plain language: anxiety mobilizes the sympathetic “protect” response, while empathy and connection restore the parasympathetic “recover” state. We trace how early defenses like fawning or avoidance become adult habits, why shame can freeze growth, and how healthy guilt, curiosity, and self-compassion help us update old patterns. Catherine shares insights from her research on anxiety and empathy among university students, why these traits can rise together in demanding environments, and how lived experience of suffering often deepens compassion. From there, we get practical. We map values-based therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Self-Determination Theory into simple steps: clarify values, spot triggers, name roles, and take small, repeatable actions that honor who you are. We explore ikigai as everyday meaning—not a grand purpose but a daily feeling found in small rituals, mindful walks, shared meals, and moments of real connection. Ibasho, a sense of belonging you can carry anywhere, becomes the anchor for authenticity across life's roles. Along the way, two mantras keep us grounded: thoughts are not facts, and anxiety is your friend. If you're ready to replace reflex with awareness and turn fear into direction, this conversation offers science, story, and tools you can use today. Listen, share with someone who needs it, and if it resonated, subscribe and leave a review so more people can find the show.

The first box is the traditional secrecy surrounding national security activities, and the second, inner box is the inscrutable nature of AI systems themselves, whose decision-making processes can be opaque even to their creators. They also discuss how this double black box challenges traditional checks on executive power, including from Congress, the courts, and actors within the executive branch itself. They explore some of Deeks's proposals to pierce these boxes, the ongoing debate about whether AI can be coded to be more lawful than human decision-makers, and why the international regulation of national security AI is more likely to resemble the fraught world of cyber norms than the more structured regime of nuclear arms control.Mentioned in this episode:"National Security AI and the Hurdles to International Regulation" by Ashley Deeks on Lawfare"Frictionless Government and Foreign Relations" by Kristen Eichensehr and Ashley Deeks in the Virginia Law ReviewTo receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Steve Deeks, on The Ignition Podcast, Steve started life wandering from home to home. Still, that inconsistency in his life created an even more vital consistency in his personality: his ability to keep going. Throughout his career, he has been fighting for money to pursue his dream of single racing seaters professionally, and while he may not have achieved that dream, steve has given the motorsport world so much. Training racers and instructing drivers, allowing people to experience, in my opinion, the single best feeling in the world, the sense of putting your foot on the floor around a track. He now focuses his time on teaching and mentoring and finds that to give him all the buzz he needs.Find Steve here: https://www.stevedeeks.com/Watch more of him in action: https://www.youtube.com/@TheAnalogueSoundSupport Calm: https://justgiving.com/fundraising/takona-automotiveGet yourself some Takona merch with code Ignition15: https://www.takona.co.uk/collections.Follow us: https://www.instagram.com/werignition/.Support us: patreon.com/IgnitionmediaAs always, thank you for listening! The DTC companies of today are different from their 2010 counterparts. In the 2010s, you could run well-designed Facebook ads with a high Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) and see incredible results, even if your product wasn't innovative. That advantage has gone away as Facebook ads have become commoditized. Now, as Robbie Deeks points out, the focus is on truly differentiated products delivered to a loyal customer base. That creates real value for customers and leads to sustainable growth for DTC brands. Deeks knows a thing or two about the DTC world. He spent his early career in Shopify before partnering with Gary Vaynerchuk to start VaynerCommerce. In this conversation, he chats with Convictional co-founder and President Chris Grouchy about the following topics: Solve customers' problems Play the long game Redefine your role Help people achieve their goals Attract talent with talent Don't churn and burn Invest in the founder Take back your leverage Reduce friction for the customer Bring back your customers It's a highly insightful conversation from someone who has lived and breathed DTC and ecommerce. Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.About Robbie Deeks:Robbie started out at Shopify Plus, where he helped the company explore new markets. Following that he partnered with Gary Vaynerchuk to build VaynerCommerce, a DTC growth consulting firm that works with some of the biggest brands in retail. About Convictional:Convictional is the Supplier Enablement Platform helping enterprise retailers, marketplaces and distributors launch and scale new product assortments by offering a modern way to connect and transact with every third-party vendor, including dropship and wholesale.
