Thomas Becket and His World (Reaktion Books, 2025) explores the turbulent life and violent death of Thomas Becket, one of the most controversial figures of the Middle Ages. From a London merchant's son to royal chancellor and archbishop of Canterbury, Becket's murder in Canterbury Cathedral on 29 December 1170 elevated him to England's most celebrated saint. Michael Staunton looks at Becket's complex and contested legacy, drawing from Becket's own words and those of his contemporaries. Based on extensive contemporary medieval sources, this account offers a fresh perspective on Thomas Becket's life and places him within the broader landscape of twelfth-century England and Europe – a time of rapid change, conflict and achievement. Thomas Becket and His World is perfect for anyone wanting to learn more about this pivotal figure in medieval history. When an art exhibition featuring stickers made to look like graffiti opened in Canterbury Cathedral, there was a surprisingly loud reaction from right-wing activists in the US - even JD Vance, the American vice-president, chimed in. Many on the political right see cathedrals, churches, and monuments in Europe as a grand cultural heritage which they feel they have to defend. And many of Donald Trump's supporters believe that Britain is under attack from multiculturalism, and that the UK is a country in decline because of its alleged failure to uphold Western values. The BBC's Mike Wendling, who's written books investigating the US far-right, explains to Adam Fleming how the concept of the "decline of the West" has crossed the Atlantic.

An art exhibition in Canterbury Cathedral has enraged traditionalists who believe that it doesn't fit with the holy site's beauty or the church's mission. The works consist of a set of temporary vinyl stickers with questions like “Why did you create hate when love is by far more powerful?” and “Does our struggle mean anything?” The questions for God were devised after artist Alex Vellis and curator Jacquiline Creswell consulted a series of marginalised groups. The organisers say the stickers were tested to make sure they did not damage the cathedral's ancient walls. But they have faced criticism on artistic grounds and questions about the appropriateness of the art and the values behind it. Among the outraged were Vice President JD Vance, who called the stickers “ugly”, and Elon Musk, who called it an affront to western civilisation They in turn were faced with supporters of the exhibition who argued it reflected the church's mission and spread a message of inclusiveness and tolerance. Art has always been intrinsically tied to religion and the Anglican Church, so how far back does this culture war battle really go – and why did political leaders in America jump into the controversy? Send us a textMichele McAloon is the host.  You can find more interviews on her website https://www.bookclues.com.The name Thomas Becket echoes through history as one of medieval England's most compelling figures – a man whose dramatic transformation from royal chancellor to martyred archbishop continues to captivate our imagination nearly a millennium later. In this episode, we're joined by Professor Michael Stotten from University College Dublin, a medieval historian whose expertise brings this extraordinary 12th-century drama to vivid life.Born to Norman merchant parents in bustling London around 1120, Becket's early years gave little indication of his eventual fame. Far from displaying early signs of sainthood, he dropped out of studies in Paris, drifted without purpose, and eventually found employment as a clerk. It was only after joining Archbishop Theobald's household that his remarkable administrative talents began to shine. When young King Henry II ascended the throne in 1154, Becket was appointed Royal Chancellor, beginning what contemporary accounts describe as one of history's greatest friendships. The two hunted, feasted, and worked together to strengthen royal governance across England – until everything changed in 1162. Henry's decision to appoint his trusted friend as Archbishop of Canterbury triggered an unexpected spiritual transformation in Becket, who suddenly began defending church privileges against royal authority with unyielding determination. The friendship rapidly deteriorated as king and archbishop clashed over jurisdiction, culminating in Becket's six-year exile in France. Though peace was eventually negotiated allowing his return to England in 1170, Becket immediately reasserted his authority by excommunicating bishops who had participated in the coronation of Henry's son – a direct challenge to royal power. The shocking climax came on December 29, 1170, when four knights, interpreting Henry's frustrated outburst as a command, murdered Becket in Canterbury Cathedral during evening prayers. The brutality of killing England's highest churchman in his own cathedral stunned medieval Europe. Almost immediately, pilgrims reported miracles at his tomb, and within three years, Thomas Becket was canonized as a saint.Professor Stotten guides us through this remarkable story with expert insight, explaining how Becket's cult spread throughout Europe and how, ironically, Henry II himself eventually embraced it – transforming his former friend from a symbol of resistance to royal power into a unifying national saint.Listen now to discover how the complex relationship between Thomas Becket and Henry II changed the course of English history and left a legacy that continues to resonate with themes of power, duty, friendship, and faith that feel surprisingly modern.

Welcome to today's Smithsonian Associates Interview Series episode here on The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast.  Where we journey back to the 12th century, a time when power, faith, and politics collided in a deadly struggle that changed the course of history. On December 20, 1170, the hallowed halls of Canterbury Cathedral bore witness to one of the most shocking and notorious murders of the Middle Ages. Archbishop Thomas Becket was brutally slain by four knights of King Henry II—a death that reverberated far beyond the walls of the cathedral and into the heart of medieval Europe. But who was Thomas Becket, and why did his life—and death—provoke such controversy? Once a trusted confidant of King Henry II, Becket was handpicked for the role of Archbishop of Canterbury, a move the king believed would solidify royal control over the church. Instead, Becket became an unwavering defender of ecclesiastical independence, defying the king at every turn. Their friendship turned to enmity, their alliance to discord, and their rivalry set the stage for one of history's most infamous political disputes. Today, we have the privilege of welcoming Smithsonian Associate Dr. Jennifer Paxton, a distinguished historian, professor, and expert in medieval history, to delve into this riveting tale. Dr. Paxton will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check our show notes for more details on her presentation titled, ‘The Murder of Thomas Becket.'' She'll guide us through the personal and political reasons behind Becket's downfall, the unintended consequences of his murder—including the rise of his sainthood and the spread of his cult—and how this tragedy sparked a legacy immortalized in literature, art, and drama. From the cultural significance of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to the political resonance of Jean Anouilh's 20th-century play, Becket's story has transcended time and borders, continuing to captivate and inspire. Prepare to explore a tale of loyalty and betrayal, of the sacred versus the secular, and of a man whose violent death transformed him into one of the most celebrated saints of the medieval world. So, sit back and join us as we unravel the fascinating, tragic, and enduring story of Thomas Becket—martyr, saint, and a lightning rod for the ages. My thanks to Smithsonian Associate Dr. Jennifer Paxton.  Dr. Paxton will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check our show notes for more details on her presentation titled, ‘The Murder of Thomas Becket.'' My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show.  My thanks to our Executive Producer Sam Heninger. Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most historic buildings in England. That history isn't limited to assassination, civil war, and famous novels. It preserves some of the history of the solar system as well. And scientists are literally vacuuming it up. They're scouring the roof of Canterbury and other cathedrals for bits of space dust. Most of the bits are pieces of asteroids — large rocks that orbit the Sun. Collisions between them create clouds of dust. Thousands of tons of the dust grains fall to Earth every year. They're hard to find, though, because they're mixed with all the dust produced here on Earth. So researchers from the University of Kent decided to look on cathedral roofs. There's a lot of area to search, the roofs are seldom touched, and the cathedrals maintain good records of construction and maintenance. The scientists vacuum up the dust. They use several techniques to sift through it to find the bits from space. In particular, they look for tiny spheres that melted then resolidified as they plunged through the atmosphere. Some of them contain magnetic minerals, and they show signs of exposure to radiation. Some of the grains contain water and organic compounds — the building blocks of life. Asteroids may have supplied Earth's original water and organics. So studying these bits of space dust can help scientists learn more about Earth's ancient history — long before England's great cathedrals.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

James Arthur Stanley Harley was a scholar, reverend, politician, and perhaps aristocrat. Born in a poor village in the Caribbean island of Antigua, he went on to attend Howard, Harvard, Yale and Oxford universities, was ordained a priest in Canterbury Cathedral and was elected to Leicestershire County Council. This remarkable career was all the more extraordinary because he was black in an age - the early twentieth century - that was institutionally racist.Pamela Roberts is an award-winning creative producer and historian. Her work as Founder and Director of Black Oxford Untold Stories has raised the profile of many black scholars from the turn of the twentieth century. Pamela joins Dan to offer insight into the Antiguan scholar, his entry by marriage to the Washington elite, and his clerical and political careers.Produced by Hannah Ward and edited by Joseph Knight. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store.
