This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this classic episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I chat with the multi-talented percussionist Joshua Mark Samuels, whose Broadway journey spans from singing and dancing as a child in California to holding down chairs in some of the biggest shows on Broadway and Radio City.We initially chatted in October of 2021, but I wanted to share this episode again. It's funny, thought-provoking, and incredibly informative. Episode Highlights:* Early Musical Roots: Josh shares stories of growing up in L.A., starting drum lessons at the age of two and a half, and learning music theory from his legendary uncle, Dave Samuels.* Dual Passions: How Josh navigated his love for both performing on stage and playing in orchestras, eventually fusing both into a career in musical theater.* Cruise Ship Hustle: Becoming a music director at age 21 and realizing pit drumming was his true calling.* Move to NYC: Josh recounts his unexpected relocation to New York and how one subway ride introduced him to Broadway drummer Gary Seligson, kick-starting his networking journey.* Landing Marvelous Wonderettes & Godspell: Hear how obsessive preparation, transcriptions, and laser-focused practice helped Josh build a strong reputation as a sub.* Radio City Christmas Spectacular: What it's really like to play 200+ shows in two months with the Rockettes—and why this gig is one of the most demanding in the business.* Subbing Philosophy: Learn why being effective matters more than being right, how to take notes without ego, and why watching the conductor is non-negotiable.* Building a Career: Josh offers insight into the importance of relationships, people skills, and being someone others want to be around, on and off the bandstand.Key Takeaways:* “Subbing is a people game. It's not just about chops—it's about trust.”* “Obsessive preparation isn't about showing off—it's about honoring the gig.”* “You don't succeed on Broadway because you're the best player. You succeed because you're the best fit.”About Joshua Mark Samuels:Josh currently holds the drums/percussion chair at Maybe Happy Ending on Broadway. His resume includes work on notable productions such as Beetlejuice, Aladdin, Miss Saigon, Jersey Boys, Chaplin, Godspell, A Bronx Tale, and Sunset Boulevard, among others. This 200th episode of brioux.tv: the podcast features a SCTV original who remains one of my favourite people to interview -- Dave Thomas. On this, our third podcast conversation, Thomas talks about his recent trip to Kyiv, a city where drone strikes and missle attacks from Russia have created a living hell for Ukrainians at war. Thomas talks all about his decision to fly to Ukraine and answer a friend's call to help raise awareness and money for the cause. He was accompanied by a small film crew and ventured into territories invaded and claimed by Russia. On one mission the soldiers he was with helped bring Ukrainian infants and elderly citizens back from enemy hands. Thomas even found time to check out a Ukrainian comedy club. There were no photos of Yakoff Smirnov on the wall. Thomas is planning a documentary about his 10-day, first hand account. This is about as far removed as you can get from Thomas' old days spoofing Russian television on SCTV's hilarious "CCCP1" episode. Thomas's goal is to help raise donations for Ukrainian's under fire. Money goes to provide medical aid, training and vehicles for defence. Give now and qualify for a charitable tax receipt. Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy and grief, Martin Short has always kept his sense of humor. As a young man, he channels three devastating personal losses into becoming a performing dynamo. Instead of being defined by these tragedies, he's emboldened to go out and pursue his acting dreams in Toronto in the 70s. The Canadian city is a hotbed of future comedy icons like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Gilda Radner. And Martin fits right in. It starts with a production of “Godspell,” and Martin never looks back. It takes him to stardom on TV, stage, and the big screen. And now, with “Only Murders in the Building,” a bromance with Steve Martin, and a rumored romance with Meryl Streep, this triple-threat Emmy winner is as hot as ever. Theatre Harrisburg, Central Pennsylvania’s oldest performing arts organization, is celebrating its 100th season. It was originally founded as Harrisburg Community Theatre in 1926 during the “little theatre” movement. “And really what that was where groups of amateurs or community members wanting to theater into their communities. So primarily theater was happening, you know, on Broadway and in the big cities, “said Executive Director, Lorien Reese-Mahay. In 1952 the theatre was moved to its current home uptown at Sixth & Hurlock Streets and in 1999 was officially named Theatre Harrisburg. This Fall, the theatre will mark its 100th season, which is a huge milestone for the organization. “Harrisburg itself, looking at 100 years of Harrisburg history, just to think how dynamic this city has been over that period of time. And yet there is something fundamental about what this organization brings to Harrisburg that throughout those decades and almost a century and well, next year, a century, that the community decides that this is important and continues to make that decision, “said Sydney Kyler, Board Chair. To mark their centennial, there will be productions to mark this historic milestone. “So, we are going to be opening our season with A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. That's going to be at the Krebsky Center in September. We are going to be doing Guys and Dolls in the Whittaker Center in November. The last five years in February at the Krebsky Center, we're doing Godspell at the Whittaker Center in April and May. And then I Love You, Your Perfect Now Change at the Krebsky Production Center as our sort of closing show for the season, “said Reese-Mahay. Listen to the podcast to hear the entire conversation. Plus, Get Out, Godspell and Oklahoma!, the movie stardom of Robert De Niro, and a long journey through the development of this idea and film. And also SNL sketches to film, smoking in movies, the anxiety this film creates, and our love of character actors (James Rebhorn alert!). Alex's website. "This is DVD" promo. Our Guest: Lucie Tassel--Lucie Tassel is an artist with ' experience, and a completely atypical background.-Being French, she naturally made her debut in Paris, where she is originally from. Under the direction of Ned Grujic, she played the role of Helen Sinclair in Bullets Over Broadway and was part of the On The Town and Godspell ensembles at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. She also played the role of Poncia in Federico García Lorca's play The House of Bernarda Alba at the Théâtre de La Nouvelle Athènes, directed by Guillaume Bouchède. She was also a member of the chorus of the symphony orchestra accompanying Joe Hisaishi on his last tour of France, and the singers of the Chœur à l'horizon, a Paris-based professional chorus specializing in the musical theatre repertoire, created and directed by Nima Santonja. In 2024, she played the lead role of Della in Sneaky Pete's Wild West Dinner Show at the Legacy Dinner Theatre in Wisconsin, USA. She is also the producer and artistic director of the A-Broad'way Cabaret, in collaboration with Kendra McBride as musical director, which opens this November at Green Room 42 in New York City, and in which she will sing alongside other international artists.-Lucie is a graduate of ECM in Paris, a musical comedy school run by Ned Grujic and Véronique Fruchart, where she trained for 3 years in singing (vocal technique, polyphony, musicianship), dance (classical, jazz, tap), theater (classical, contemporary, mime, clowning) and stage combat (swords, batons). —She also trained in cartoon voice-over with Edwige Chandelier. —To complete her professional training, she moved to New York to study at AMDA, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where she benefited from American expertise, honing her skills in singing, dancing and acting.A sportswoman from an early age, she has a passion for salsa and other Latin dances, and enjoys a wide range of disciplines including tennis (her specialty), climbing, skiing, horse-riding and rollerblading. Lucie's career path is atypical: after obtaining her Master's degree in physical and nutritional rehabilitation, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Paris for 5 years before devoting herself fully to the performing arts. Trilingual French-Spanish-English, she is also a traveler who, after visiting several countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America, fell in love with Venezuela, a country that really helped her grow emotionally and from which she has learned an enormous amount. All these trips, and the people she met along the way, opened her heart and mind, bringing to light what she dared not admit but secretly dreamed of: being an artist.----Join the conversation LiveChat as we raise the questions, give our opinions , and ask you the same questions... --Live Chat with Us Every week... -----Music: Audio Podcast : by Daniel Howse : www.youtube.com/ProfessorSoraMusic ** OneMicNite Theme Song "Chance" & Background Song "Kanye" Host:--Contact/ Follow Marcos on IG/Fb/IMdb/Twitter/TikTok: @MarcosLuis —Show: OneMicNite Podcast with Marcos Luis *Contact/Follow: IG/Fb/Twitter/Tumbler/LinkedIn/Youtube/TikTok @OneMicNite www.OneMicnite.com - - ** Listen to Audio Podcast: Available wherever you download , all digital platforms.. ** Support Us Now: http:www.Anchor.fm/onemicnitetalk ---Follow/Contact -- The Show: All Social Media Fb/Ig/Twitter/Tumbler/TikTok/ *** watch the episodes on Youtube @OneMicNite & www.OneMicNite.com****Please Support this Podcast: PayPal/ Zell Pay: MarcosStarActor@gmail.com Venmo @ Marcoso-Luis-1 CashApp : $MarcosLuis1 Please Visit: The AzulesEn Online store to find Products that Compliment your Lifestyle: Link : https://azulesen.myshopify.com/products/onemicnite-signature-logo-unisex-talk-live-pod-tee --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onemicnite/support

This week's episode features my talented friend and colleague, Costume Designer Katie Irish.  We dig into her roots in theatre (she also started off college pre-med just like myself!) and her transition into film and tv which included taking over designing The Americans. We talk about our union work in United Scenic Artists Local 829 - especially as she and I have been two of the co-chairs of the Pay Equity Task Force for several years. We discuss our recent contract negotiation and the gains made and what more still need to do: especially in regards to our amazing ACDs and CDCs. Marty Rhone was born as Karel (or Karl) Lawrence van Rhoon on 7 May 1948 in the Dutch East Indies  (Indonesia) His father was Eddy Emile van Rhoon, his mother was Judith Olive.  She was a singer and actress, who met Eddy through the Sydney jazz scene; he was a visiting pianist.   The couple married in 1947, and migrated to Australia on 21 April 1950 and briefly lived in Sydney and Brisbane, and then moved to Darwin.   Rhone was taught piano by his father but he preferred singing. In August 1959, aged 11, he first performed publicly at Darwin's Mitchell Street Town Hall in Around the World in 80 Minutes – a charity variety concert – alongside his father on piano and his mother. After he finished primary school, the family moved to Sydney. In mid-1961, Rhone appeared on a talent quest segment of ATN7-TV series, Tarax Show, and was offered a singing spot on a children's show,  During 1966 Marty Rhone and The Soul Agents supported The Rolling Stones on the United Kingdom rock group's tour of Australia. They also performed on the bill of the P.J. Proby Show at the Sydney Stadium with Wayne Fontana, Eden Kane and The Bee Gees appearing.  Rhone moved to Melbourne and issued five singles on Spin Records but had "limited success". In March 1970, Rhone was conscripted for National Service until 1972. During his service he attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon, as a member of their band, for 18 months. From April 1972 to July 1973 he acted in the Australian stage version of Godspell at The Richbrooke, Sydney with Rod Dunbar, Peita Toppano and John Waters. The Australian cast soundtrack album was issued as Godspell: a Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew on His Master's Voice. He attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and in July 1973 he released a new single, "Goodbye in May". He composed the music for Ruzzante Returns from the Wars, which starred Ivar Kants  Rhone followed with appearances on TV soap operas, Number 96 (1974) and Class of '75 (1975). By mid-1975 Rhone had signed with M7 Records and issued his next single, "Denim and Lace", which peaked at No. 8 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart. It was promoted on the Class of '75 soundtrack album. It was co-written by L Lister (aka Jack Aranda) and F Lyons (aka Shad Lyons). Lister and Lyons also produced Rhone's debut album, Denim and Lace, recording at Alberts Studio 139. At the end of the year "Denim and Lace" was the second highest selling single in Australia. His next single, "Star Song", reached the Top 50, the next two were less successful, while the last one for the year, "On the Loose" reached the Top 40. Of the four singles, "On the Loose (Again)" – co-written by Bryan Dawe and Steve Groves (ex-Tin Tin)– was used by Rhone to win the 1976 Australian Popular Song Festival and represented Australia at the World Popular Song Festival.  In June 1977 he had another hit with "Mean Pair of Jeans", which reached No. 10. In July 1978 Rhone relocated to London. In June 1979, Rhone took the role of Lun Tha in the London Palladium presentation of The King and I alongside Yul Brynner and Virginia McKenna. By September 1981 he had returned to Sydney. In 1987 Rhone became a business manager for a trio of brothers, the Australian boxers: Dean, Guy and Troy Waters. In December 1988 Rhone organised the "Battle on the Beach" for January 1989 with Dean Waters, as Australian heavyweight champion, to fight New Zealand's title holder. In 2007, Rhone  performed a repertoire of tracks by Cliff Richard; a gig at the Crown Casino, Melbourne, in late 2008 it was filmed and broadcast in February the next year as Marty Rhone: A Tribute to Cliff Richard and The Shadows.  In May 2011 on the Cliff & Dusty presentation he performed with Sheena Crouch as UK pop singer Dusty Springfield and in June 2012 with his own "musical theatre fantasy" covering Richard's and The Beatles' material in Cliff Joins The Beatles. Deschanel” on “Sunset Beach”, “Walter” on “Days of our Lives”, “Preston Regis” on “DeVanity”, for which he received 2 Indie Series Award nominations, and “Maximillion Winterthorne” on “Winterthorne”, for which he received another Indie Series Award nomination.    And on the stage, our guest has performed in everything from Shakespeare to Ibsen.  He's starred in “The Fantastiks”, “Godspell”, “King John”, “Love's Labours Lost”, “The Imaginary Invalid”, “A Month in the Country”, “Loot”, “Eastern Standard” and many more plays.    For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ #GordonThomson    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

A midwife has recently learned that people who were born with a tongue-tie might have trouble giving oral sex later in life. Should she advise new parents to get their newborns surgery on their itty-bitty little baby tongues?  A woman has started crying during sex, and not the joyful release kind of crying. She has no history of trauma or abuse. So why does sex bring on such unhappy feelings?  On the Magnum, musical theater nerds rejoice! This one's for you. Dan brings on writer and actress Julie Klausner to GEEK OUT about her amazing show "Schmigadoon!" Dan and Julie hold hands and skip through the fields of Oklahoma, Chicago, Pippin and Godspell. They also manage to advise a man who wonders if his enjoyment of self-stimulation with a dildo makes him gay.  And a frequent caller is confused about the use of she/her pronouns for drag queens. Aren't they still guys? Dan brings his lived experience to the discourse.  Bring YOUR lived experience to the Lovecast: Send in your recorded question or comment to Q@Savage.Love or call 206-302-2064 This episode is brought to you by Dipsea: an app full of hundreds of short, sexy audio stories designed by women for women.
