Vikings have long been depicted as that stereotype of the hairy, nameless warrior, leaping ashore from his longboat, ready to terrorise a hapless local population in a northern European country. But there were also seers, artisans, travellers, and writers, too whose stories can now be pieced together through the traces that they left behind.Dr. Eleanor Janega is joined by Alex Harvey to bring to light new research and challenge our conventional understanding of the Viking era, which may not be as accurate as we thought or as the sagas would have us believe.Gone Medieval is presented by Dr. Eleanor Janega and edited by Max Carrey. Paul Cook's post-Pistols band the Professionals were once, rather surprisingly, on the cover of Smash Hits - “the pinnacle of our success!” – and they're including the 100 Club on their upcoming tour, the location of another career highlight. He talks to us here about how the first time he played live was also the Pistols' first appearance (Saint Martin's College of Art - “utter chaos”), how their old Denmark Street rehearsal room is now an AirBnB (Rotten's cartoons still on the wall), old punks in the audience, Danny Boyle's TV series and the very slim chance of a reunion (“never say never”). But much of this is about climbing through back windows to see bands in the early ‘70s, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Queen and Mott the Hoople among them. And seeing Alex Harvey on the day the whole of Scotland descended on London for the match against England at Wembley. The Professionals are playing four UK dates (and often chuck in a couple of Pistols' tunes):https://www.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/the-professionals-1-1Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free - access to all of our content, plus a whole load more: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Ils s'associent à Iggy Pop dans "I Wanna Be Your Slave". More than any band we've covered in over 50 episodes, this band has delivered us the most blank looks! “Never heard of them!”, people say! So, we thought we'd remedy this serious hole in people's musical appreciation by looking at one of the most exciting but overlooked musical occurrences of the 70's. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (SAHB) could only have existed during the 70's, and possibly only in Glasgow. Starting with the idea that, to call yourself “Sensational”, you've got to be sensational, Alex Harvey joined local band, Tear Gas, to form SAHB in 1972. Singing in a broad Glaswegian accent, Alex Harvey led the band to become the highest-grossing live band in the UK. When they launched a song called, “Faith Healer” at 1973 Reading Festival, they blew Rod Stewart and Status Quo off stage!SAHB has influenced bands like AC/DC, The Cure and Nick Cave and inspired a generation of bands over the years since then.  There're a million stories around SAHB. The anecdote involving The Doobie Brothers and the wrong dressing room is an absolute corker! Not to mention the time they gave AC/DC their big break on UK TV. Jeff is loving the possibilities of ChatGPT, and had it compose songs in the style of David Bowie and Elton John. Or a fruit-based limerick! Or an Eminem rap about cats. Yep, it's as horrific as it sounds.Normally, we'd do an album “you must hear before you die”, but for a change, we've chosen to look at Rod Stewart's wonderful mandolin effort, “Maggie May”, and how it's based on an actual “experience” with an older woman where Rod's biggest concern was that if his performance wasn't good enough, his reputation could be ruined. Probably one of the best songs of Stewart's career.   References: Artificial Intelligence, Chat GPT, Open AI, David Bowie, Elton John, Eminem, “1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die”, Robert Dimery, “Anatomy of a Song”, Marc Myers, “Maggie May”, “Reason to Believe”, Ron Wood, celesta, Rod Stewart sexual performance, “Storyteller”, Tear Gas, SAHB, “Mid-Atlantic accent”, Zal Cleminson, Chris Glen, Hugh & Ted McKenna, Doobie Brothers, The Cure, AC/DC, “Framed”, The Coasters, “SAHB Live”, “Isobel Goudie”, “Faith Healer”, “Anthem”, “Tomahawk Kid”, “Delilah”, “Vambo” SAHB PlaylistVambo Live Youtube

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with the author of Song Noir: Tom Waits and the Spirit of Los Angeles, Alex Harvey. Alex Harvey is a producer and director of programs including Panorama and The Late Show for the BBC. His films include The Lives of Animals and Enter the Jungle. Based in Los Angeles, he regularly writes on literature, film, and music for the London Review of Books and Los Angeles Review of Books. His book, Song Noir, examines the formative first decade of Tom Waits's career, when he lived, wrote, and recorded nine albums in Los Angeles: from his soft, folk-inflected debut, Closing Time in 1973, to the abrasive, surreal Swordfishtrombones in 1983. Starting his songwriting career in the seventies, Waits absorbed Los Angeles's wealth of cultural influences. Combining the spoken idioms of writers like Kerouac and Bukowski with jazz-blues rhythms, he explored the city's literary and film noir traditions to create hallucinatory dreamscapes. Waits mined a rich seam of the city's low-life locations and characters, letting the place feed his dark imagination. Mixing the domestic with the mythic, Waits turned quotidian, autobiographical details into something more disturbing and emblematic, a vision of Los Angeles as the warped, narcotic heart of his nocturnal explorations. In this episode host Michael Shields and Alex Harvey discuss what Tom Wait's Los Angeles of the 1970s was actually like, a LA that doesn't exist today. They explore how the Beat writers like Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski influenced Waits' songwriting and how the city eventually became more of a trap than means of escape for Waits. The expound upon the character of Frank that Waits brought to life over a trilogy of albums, his highly accomplished acting career, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. We are catching our breath here with Alex Harvey with the 50 k classic rundown on the podcast. On another planet where the perceived forces of good and evil do not wear Lycra, this race is simply catalogued as another classic, not a mega-classic.Such is life and such is racing. This 50 k classic monster came down to the wire as Russia's Alexander Bolshunov and Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo flowed into the final straight. Here's the replay from today's race report:No matter how you look at it, pro-Russia, pro-Norway, pro-fun racing, Bolshunov went wide to close the door on Klæbo and the Norwegian sprinter nearly lost his balance dodging V-boards, ski tips, and Bolshunov's physical presence. During the brush-up, with no crowd noise, you can hear Bolshunov's pole crack with the bottom half falling to the ground after he stuck it between his legs.As Klæbo and Bolshunov re-centered, both now with barely enough room to push the pedals down, the drag race ensured with, as one might guess, Klæbo winning and Bolshunov, with one effective pole, losing ground. The rest, as they say, is recent history. Klæbo is DQ'd, Iversen wins and on and on. And if you still need video evidence to prove or disprove your respective point of view, head to our Facebook page where several people have posted replay videos. Thanks for listening to the podcast and we appreciate you taking the time out of your day to check in with our World Championship coverage.

In this Sunday, World Championship team sprint episode of the Devon Kershaw Show, we have a special guest from Québec , the actual Prince of Québec ... Alex Harvey. It has been ten short or long years since he and Kershaw won the classic team sprint at the 2011 Oslo World Championships. First off, before listening to the episode today...check out the videos posted below. To set the scene, this win goes down at the Holmenkollen, the Shangri La of cross-country skiing. The Holmenkollen is hallowed ground.   Think dense fog rolling in from Oslo fjord - a hundred thousand fans lining the course and stomping in the stands - there to witness the Canadians overtake a Norwegian in the final straight to win the team sprint. Back then, Harvey and Kershaw were a decade younger but no less wise. But we'll let them tell the story. For now, their win in Oslo is a good spine tingle for these times. They remind us of the gift of crowds and that anything can happen when the stars and maybe a little fog align.  Here are some solid videos to time-machine back to relive the scene:1) The call from British Eurosport2) The scene on the grind from former Canadian National Team athlete George GreyIndeed, we do get to the 2021 World Championships too. Kershaw and Harvey chat about the sunny day's racing in the freestyle team sprint won by Norway on the men's side and Sweden for the women. Thanks for listening.
