A record nearly 400,000 people are on some form of benefit – almost the same proportion of the population as after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) – and there's a warning that number will increase before it falls again. A worker claims Minister for Commerce Andrew Bayly told him to "take some wine and f... off", called him a loser and formed the shape of an 'L' on his forehead with his fingers. Christopher Luxon says Bayly got it ‘horribly wrong'. Australian Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe shouted anti-colonial slogans at King Charles during his visit to the Australian parliament on Monday, shocking assembled lawmakers and other dignitaries. "Give us our land back! Give us what you stole from us!" Thorpe screamed in an almost minute-long diatribe, after the 75-year-old king's speech. ================================= Come support the work we're doing by becoming a Patron of #BHN www.patreon.com/BigHairyNews Merch available at www.BHNShop.nz Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/BigHairyNews Follow us on Twitter. @patbrittenden @Chewie_NZ

What if the church could retain its mission and identity amidst the ever-changing social and political tides? Join us as we welcome Joshua Pfeiffer, PhD candidate at Concordia Seminary and an Australian pastor, who offers a profound perspective on maintaining clarity and confidence within the church. Joshua shares his observations from two and a half years in the United States, exploring the church's vital role as the tangible presence of Christ in a complex world. We venture into the unique intersection of Australian Indigenous spirituality and Christianity, inspired by a personal experience involving Aboriginal dreaming stories. Through this lens, our discussion delves into how Indigenous spiritual practices coexist and integrate with Christian faith in Australia, with a particular focus on the efforts of Lutheran missionaries. Joshua and I draw intriguing parallels to American Christianity and Native American spiritualities, highlighting the delicate balance between preserving cultural traditions and embracing a unified faith. Finally, we reflect on the timeless legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his influence on preaching and civil rights rhetoric. Discover the spontaneous, unscripted moments of King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech and the powerful lessons contemporary preachers can learn from his vivid storytelling. We also touch on the adaptation of Martin Luther King's symbolism within Australian contexts, including its resonance with Indigenous narratives. Tune in for a rich conversation that spans continents and cultures, offering valuable insights for navigating the evolving spiritual landscape.Support the Show.Watch Us On Youtube!

The most pressing question in these uncertain times may be how can we bring healing and protection to the Earth?Join me this episode the explore this question that Cynthia Jurs carried with her in 1990 as she climbed a path high in the Himalayas, to meet an “old wise man in a cave”—a venerated lama from Nepal. This question is the centre for both her work, her book, 'Summoned by the Earth', and our conversation - sharing her journeys around the world, from Australian Indigenous communities to the USA. And Cynthia's way of reaching the answer is through practice and acknowledging the importance of listening to the Earth and developing a relationship with nature  - to go outside, connect with the natural world, and ask how you can be of service.Cynthia became a dharma teacher (Dharmacharya) in the Order of Interbeing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 1994 and in 2018, was made an honorary lama in the Vajrayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in recognition of her dedication in carrying out the Earth Treasure Vase practice. Inspired by thirty years of pilgrimage into diverse communities and ecosystems, today Cynthia is forging a new path of dharma in service to Gaia—a path deeply rooted in the feminine, honoring indigenous cultures, and devoted to collective awakening. Cynthia leads meditations, retreats, courses, and pilgrimages to support the emergence of a global community of engaged and embodied sacred activists.
