This is an episode dedicated to Poker Face, a practically perfect new show starring Natasha Lyonne (who is also an executive producer). An episodic murder mystery, the only real crime this show commits is heterosexual camp. It's a good thing we're here to Scooby the crew, pull off their masks, and unveil the homosexual energy that hides behind them. Stay tuned for astrological games, sapphic nostalgia, and a hearty dose of fanfare. Spoilers galore, beware all who enter here. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bigdykeenergy/support

Rian Johnson's hit new show "Poker Face" premiered at the top of 2023 and instantly became a hit on Peacock with critics and audiences. The clever "case-of-the-week" murder mystery series evoked the same pleasures he brought to the "Knives Out" movies and gave Natasha Lyonne another standout role she could sink her teeth into. Editor Glenn Garland (Episodes 2, 4, and 10) was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the show, which you can listen to down below. Be sure to check out the show if you haven't already, which is now streaming in full on Peacock and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy awards. Thank you, and enjoy! Editors - Glenn Garland ACE, Bob Ducsay ACE, Paul Swain, Shaheed Qaasim The POKER FACE editing team of Garland, Ducsay, Qaasim and Swain might sound like a formidable name for a law firm, but their real talents lie in making a great "howcatchem" show with noted director and series creator, Rian Johnson. POKER FACE is a murder mystery series stylized as a character-driven, case-of-the-week mystery, with each episode adapting the inverted detective story format popularized by COLUMBO. The series centers around Charlie Cale, a casino worker with an innate ability to detect lies, traveling across the United States on the run from a casino boss following a suspicious death. Along the way, she encounters colorful characters and solves homicides in a variety of settings. GLENN GARLAND, ACE Accomplished editor Glenn Garland, ACE has over three decades of experience plying his skills on fan favorite tv series such as; STAN AGAINST EVIL, PREACHER and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, as well as feature films like; HALLOWEEN (2007), KING OF CALIFORNIA and the infamously unreleased THE FANTASTIC FOUR (1994). BOB DUCSAY, ACE Editor Bob Ducsay ACE has forged a tight collaborative bond with director Rian Johnson, going back to their first film, LOOPER (2012). And although POKER FACE is only their first tv series together, the quality of their feature work has already been recognized by audiences, critics and the industry at large. The pair were recently honored with the inaugural Variety Creative Collaborators Award at the 10th annual Middleburg Film Festival. PAUL SWAIN Rock drummer turned editor Paul Swain has brought his natural sense of rhythm to such projects as; THE UNICORN, THE EX-PM and THE MOODYS, for which he won an Australian Screen Editors ASE award in 2014. SHAHEED QAASIM Editor by day, swing dancer by night, Shaheed Qaasim's storytelling chops can be seen in shows like; MODERN FAMILY, THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND and FUTURE MAN. Editing POKER FACE In our discussion with the POKER FACE editing team, we talk about: Paying homage to 70's procedurals Going from swing dancing to swings in tone Reinventing the audio and visual languages throughout Teaching your audience how to watch the show Holding off on temp score until you really need it The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Learn about Avid's new Media Composer for Students program Hear Bob's interviews about his work on Rian Johnson's; KNIVES OUT, GLASS ONION and THE LAST JEDI. Our dead pilot this month is called Young Professionals and was written by David Litt, who, at age 24, became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. David is also the author of two bestselling books: "Thanks, Obama" and "Democracy in One Book or Less". Young Professionals follows five friends who struggle to make a difference in the broken, bizarre, hopelessly absurd world of Washington DC. It's Veep meets Broad City! The project was initially set up at Comedy Central and then this version was developed at ABC, both times with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer (Broad City) attached to executive produce. It's a true insider's view of what it's like to be young and trying to change the world in the nation's capital! As always, we had a great for this one including John Harlan Kim (911), Olivia Sui (Smosh, Do Revenge), Karan Menon (tik tok), Alexxis Lemire (The Half Of It), Sandeep Parikh (The Guild), Noah Segan (Poker Face), Joel Spence (Big Little Lies), Isabella Gomez (One Day At A Time), Hal Lublin (The Venture Bros), and Andrew Reich with stage directions. We talk Donald Trump's indictment, which feels like it was ages ago but we always give it a new twist. Then there's Dilbert's Scott Adams and racism, diversity in the workplace, a new cafe near the duo and the sweet, horrible woman who runs it, and NOT a movie review of Peacock's “Poker Face.” Somebody has cramps in this episode, can you guess who?
Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas!Holy shit, this interview is a doozy. To our regular listeners, this episode is more of a #BasicBitch than an interview, and at one point the tables were turned and Erin and Ange were the ones receiving questions. Let's just say that we had a meeting of the minds with these ladies, and this is (hopefully) the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Mother of the Dawn is a short film about a female truck driver in Brazil who started having visions of extraterrestrials in the 1950s. These visions led her to start her own community/religion of followers that has over 800,000 members, yet is still relatively unheard of. We were joined by director Janell Shirtcliff and producer Daisy O'Dell, and while our conversation definitely discusses the importance of their short film and how much they cherish this community of people and their beliefs, it also ventures off into the unknown (in the best way possible). Heyyyyyy and welcome to episode 18 of season 4. A few of you listeners sent in some fun and interesting queer discourse related questions, so we get into the social consequences, ramifications, implications etc. of the lesbian masterdoc and its circulation across the internet, especially towards the beginning of the pandemic. Relatedly, we discuss the nature of "comphet" in how it's being used and thrown around by people in ways that are deeply questionable, and compulsory heterosexuality's origin as a term in contrast to its use in day to day rhetoric contemporarily. We also talk about the ethics of taking a college class about Marxism or communism and reading theory for class. Another hot take included an opinion on gay men being tokenized by women vs. lesbian isolation experiences (hence, more queer discourse.) Our shared media we watched for this episode was the new Rian Johnson of Knives Out (we reviewed Glass Onion in a Patreon bonus episode here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/our-glass-onion-77444305 we also have a recently uploaded episode reviewing each other's media recommendations from the end portions of previous episodes!! Check it out baes) project, starring Natasha Lyonne— Poker Face, available on Peacock (or anywhere you can find it on the internet. Who said that??) Also, Alice Ju, you are a genius. For media recommendations, Sunny tells listeners and Renaissance to read Quicksand by Nella Larsen, and we complain about not being able to consume as much media. We haven't been reading books or watching movies or TV like we used to and it's really sad!!! But such is life... Thanks for joining us for this episode!
