In many modern English translations of the Bible, the first eleven verses of John 8 (the account of the woman caught in the act of adultery) are said to be verses that do not appear in the earliest Greek manuscripts. So how do we explain its inclusion in later Greek manuscripts? And does this mean that this passage is not inspired? We answer these questions in this episode, while exploring some of the basics of textual criticism to help us understand things like John 8. When we cross-reference biblical passages, the confirming details build both out trust in the divine inspiration of the Bible, but also its historical reliability. In this message, we look at how United Methodists understand the inspiration of scripture. As Wesleyan Christians, we are rooted in the Bible. It is both the source of our faith and the measure of our spiritual authenticity. However, instead of insisting on a strict literal reading, we teach a dynamic and contextual way of interpreting scripture. When we read prayerfully and carefully with other Christians, the Bible becomes the living word of God in the power of the Holy Spirit, and we are transformed into the image of Christ.Of all the beliefs that set us apart from many other denominations, this one may be the most significant. So, check out this message and learn how God works through scripture to transform us in love!Sources: Adam Hamilton, "Making Sense of the Bible" (2016) and "Half Truths" (2016); Randy Maddox, "Responsible Grace" (1994)If this message is a blessing, you can support our ministries by donating at www.fumccb.com. The first Church in the Book of Acts could have easily become the first two churches right from the beginning. It's instructive how these groups were able to maintain the unity of just one Church. On today's Equipping You in Grace show, Dave considers the meaning of verbal plenary inspiration, how Christians should respond to a post-truth culture with Scripture, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian, and our witness. What you'll hear in this episode The meaning of verbal plenary inspiration. The meaning of partial inspiration and why it's not accurate. Why there's no such thing as private truth. Responding to a post-truth culture with the Scripture. Why everyone is seeking truth and why everyone is a theologian. Why the word post-truth undermines the need for meaning and thus for the foundation for truth. The ministry of the Holy Spirit, the Christian, and our witness. Aaron Shelenberger who studied under Mike Licona at Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina, shares about his research on the historicity of the resurrection. In particular, his thesis tackled three main objections brought forth by popular author and anti-Christian Bart Ehrman. Now, I realize this episode and the next two that follow are a tad technical, so if that's not your jam, then you may want to skip them. However, what I've noticed in the past is that our most technical episodes tend to get lots of downloads. In our conversation today we discuss the importance of resurrection and how Ehrman's attack on the reliability of the Gospels fails to undermine the case for the resurrection. Also, I bring up Licona's somewhat controversial book, Why Are There Differences in the Gospels and get Shelenberger's take on it. The Big Idea: In the biblical sense inspiration is unique. God was the primary author of the Bible; He was the One who inspired the writers to speak truths. He was the initiator. God was the source, the writers were the recipients.Main Points:1. The Bible is the product of God himself. The ideas are not human thoughts but come from God's will. We also need to understand though, that the writers of the Bible were not just writing machines. God did not punch them like keys on a keyboard. His Holy Spirit prompted their hearts and minds, but it is clear that each writer had a style of his own. 2. One of ways we see the divine inspiration of scripture is in the unity of the Bible. There is amazing clarity in the central message of the Bible. The unity of the Bible is simply amazing. It's even more amazing when you understand how it came together. The Bible was not written by one man, but by 45 different authors over a period of 1500 years in places all the way from Babylon to Rome.3. Think for a moment about the diversity of these authors: kings, poets, prophets, a physician, farmers, shepherds, fisherman, a tax collector, apostles, and pastors. All of these men writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and when the writings are gathered together in the canon of Scripture, they tell a complete story.Today's Scripture Verses:2 Timothy 3:16 - “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” 1 Peter 1:21 - “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram
In this episode I talk about the value of reading the scriptures of faiths other than our own. I also explore the concepts of the inspiration and authority of scripture from a nondual perspective.
