Title: “God vs. Magic” Part 2 Text: Acts 19:17-20 FCF: We often struggle to believe that God alone is sufficient for all we need. Prop: Because God's power is greater than magic, we must fear the Lord and turn from our former ways. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 19. In a moment I'll begin reading starting in verse 11 from the English Standard Version. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. Last week we took a deep look at the events that transpire in Ephesus surrounding the use of magic, sorcery and exorcisms and how they compare to Yahweh and His power. We saw how God stooped to demonstrate His power in an unusual way in order to prove that He is more powerful than all the magic that the Ephesians were depending on. God being more powerful than everything else must lead us to trust Him and not to try to use His name for selfish ends as some kind of good luck charm or talisman. Indeed, He cannot be used in such a way, for He doesn't need us for anything and we need Him for everything. Today we will see the effect of these events on the Ephesians and even the Ephesian Christians. Their response will both prove that they thought God is more powerful than all other powers and it will give us a pattern for a couple other responses we should have to His great power. Please stand with me to give honor to and to focus on the reading of the Word of God. Invocation: Almighty God. We come today as Your dear children hoping to hear from You and Your Word. We know that we are sustained by the life-giving precepts which You have graciously given through inspiration of Your Spirit and preserved for us today. We ask that Your Spirit would be with us today as we peer into Your power and authority. We ask that You would show us Your might and that it would lead us to respond in a way that is pleasing to You. Help us Lord to grow in our faith in response to who You are. We ask this in the Son's name and by His authority and power, Amen. Transition: Let us get right to the text this morning as we seek to wrap up this narrative episode. I.) God's power is greater than magic, so we must fear the Lord and revere His name. (17) a. [Slide 2] 17 - And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. i. Luke begins assessing the effect of these two episodes by looking to the city as a whole. ii. All the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about these events. iii. As is often the case in the scriptures it is ok for us to understand the word “all” not to mean all. iv. We are not doing damage to the inerrancy of scripture if we are to question whether or not Luke took a census to ensure that every single person in the city had heard about these things. v. I would say that Luke uses hyperbole as we normally do in conversation. 1. Everyone loves pizza! We might say. 2. Really? 3. Does every single person love pizza? In a unique style, Jude calls to memory the saying that there will be mockers of God in the last days. These mockers have a childish behavior towards the things of God, their focus is egocentric, and they cause divisions in the body of Christ that should be united. In contrast, the faithful minister has a singular focus to bring forth the Word of God, the faithful listeners hear it, and in so doing, both build up the body of Christ. Another legendary Kiwi band is making a return.  Though we thought they were done in 2020, Th' Dudes are performing a one-off show at Auckland's Powerstation next month.   They've got the blessing of Dave Dobbyn, who isn't involved, picking up renowned guitarist Brett Adams of the Mockers and the Bads fame instead.  Founding member Peter Urlich told Andrew Dickens that when they played those last songs at Spark Arena in 2020, he was looking around and thinking ‘is this really gonna be the last time we get up on stage and play these songs?'  “There was just this feeling inside me that I thought, oh well, you know, that's, that's hard to swallow.”  He said that in the intervening four years they looked at the idea of performing again, and realised the demand was still there.  “I just thought the love was still there, so and of course, we wanted to play.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's Wisdom Nugget, I will guide you through the vast landscapes of biblical wisdom. Today, we'll be exploring Proverbs 29:8-14 from the New Living Translation. In these verses, we'll uncover insights into the consequences of wickedness, the blessings of wisdom, and the importance of humility. So, let's not delay any further. Let's dive into the wisdom of Proverbs. Verses 8-9: “Mockers can get a whole town agitated, but the wise will calm anger. If a wise person takes a fool to court, there will be ranting and ridicule but no satisfaction.” These verses contrast the behavior of mockers with that of the wise. How can we understand the consequences of mockery and the blessings of wisdom? Recognize the destructive nature of mockery and ridicule, which only serve to agitate and stir up anger. Instead, choose wisdom and discernment, which have the power to calm and diffuse tense situations. Avoid engaging in mockery and ridicule, knowing that it leads to strife and conflict. Seek to be a peacemaker and a source of calm in your interactions with others, knowing that it reflects the wisdom of God. When faced with foolishness and folly, choose to respond with patience and understanding, rather than resorting to anger and retaliation. Now, let's explore verses 10-11. “The bloodthirsty hate blameless people, but the upright seek to help them. Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.” These verses highlight the contrast between the actions of the bloodthirsty and the upright. How can we understand the importance of seeking to help the blameless and exercising restraint in anger? Support the Blameless and Exercise Restraint: Recognize the importance of standing up for the blameless and seeking to help them, even in the face of opposition and hatred. The bloodthirsty harbor hatred towards the blameless, seeking to harm and destroy them. In contrast, the upright seek to support and assist the blameless, showing compassion and kindness towards them. Choose to exercise restraint in your anger, knowing that it reflects wisdom and maturity. Avoid venting your anger and frustration impulsively, as it only leads to further conflict and harm. Instead, choose to respond with calmness and self-control, knowing it diffuses tension and promotes peace. And finally, let's turn our attention to verses 12-14. “If a ruler pays attention to liars, all his advisers will be wicked.
