Bardstown was once called the most beautiful small town in America. Bourbon country. Quiet streets. A place where nothing bad was supposed to happen. Then came the ambush of Officer Jason Ellis. A year later, the brutal murders of Kathy and Samantha Netherland. Soon after, Crystal Rogers vanished on the Fourth of July. Three crimes. Three families. One town. No answers. For years, everything sat in silence. But this summer, something shifted. Trials. Testimony. Secrets rising to the surface. Part 1 takes us back to where it all began. And it's only the beginning. Is the audience more than a gaggle of consumers? What role do they play in the creative process of an artist? Should they, as Rick Rubin says, "come last"? Are they always right? Or is there a more nuanced and sustaining way to approach this question? In this episode of The Gentle Rebel, I explore this question with Steve Lawson. I bumped into Steve towards the end of the summer at Greenbelt Festival. We rapidly got deep in conversation about his recently completed PhD, A Study Towards a New Model for Subscriber Audience Involvement in Improvised Music. Steve's approach to music-making and creative practice has always resonated with me. Over the past twenty-five years, he has carved out a living as a solo improvisational bass player, developing a thoughtful and sustainable model for art that resists the common assumptions that drive an obsession with numbers and scale. His thesis turns that lived experience into a lens for questioning many of the assumptions baked into how we think about creativity today. https://youtu.be/BB362bVySiI Notes from our conversation... The Audience Comes With What happens if we treat the audience as part of the story that shapes and sustains our practice? A way of looking at the influential relationship between artist and audience is to create spaces where the rationale (the philosophical approach) can be presented, and work can emerge as part of a conversation with the audience. For Steve, listening to how people (who respect your work) engage with it, whether “that reminds me of…” or “my Dad just died and all I can listen to is you,” becomes so much more meaningful than having a reviewer who doesn't know what you are doing or why, and place it in a pile of other CDs. What matters is how people relate it to their lives, and what it means to them. Creating spaces for this dialogue became central: a mailing list, website forum, Twitter, and eventually a subscription model through Bandcamp. Non-Algorithmically Defined Community Spaces This meant integrating community with the economic rationale for making music. The audience emotionally sustains the music and financially supports its creation, along with the maintenance of the space where both artist and audience belong as equals. When the audience has already paid for the music before it is made, there is no need to rationalise it with hype or spectacle. Instead, it connects with people who already share the philosophical approach. This is a form of patronage, supporting the artist because of how they create, not only what they make. Scenius (Brian Eno) Genius is not an individual trait but the manifestation of the collective intelligence of a scene. Famous names are simply the visible tip of a larger iceberg, as with Russian painters in the early twentieth century. Reception Theory (Stuart Hall) Audiences actively interpret media texts by encoding and decoding. They may align with the intended meaning (dominant reading), reject it (oppositional reading), or negotiate it. Instrumental music does not encode meaning in a concrete way. Its sense of meaning emerges cumulatively, with artist and audience encoding together. Decoding and recoding become a collective process, shaped by new work and ongoing observations. The Space of the Talkaboutable (David Darke) Great works expand the “space of the talkaboutable,” an invitation to discuss ideas and broaden horizons. While Darke sees this as arriving around the work, Steve sees the space as built first (through mailing lists, forums, Twitter, Bandcamp), with the work then released into it. Meaning is collectively encoded, decoded, and recoded in this shared space. “The Audience Comes Last” The PhD began with the desire to make better music. What became clear was how much the audience contributes to the process, and what happens when that is denied. Rubin's statement that the audience should be ignored overlooks the wisdom, care,

Natasha: But first, prominent pastor and theologian Steve Lawson breaks his silence six months after news surfaced that he was having an inappropriate relationship with a young woman. Warren: Steven Lawson, 73, who stepped down from ministry following an adultery scandal, has published a public confession admitting his sin and repentance. On March 12, in his first tweet on X since before the scandal broke, Lawson addressed his followers in a nearly 500-word tweet. "It is with a shattered heart that I write this letter. I have sinned grievously against the Lord, against my wife, my family, and against countless numbers of you by having a sinful relationship with a woman not my wife," the tweet began. Natasha: In September 2024, Trinity Bible Church of Dallas removed Lawson, their lead pastor of six years, after he admitted to church elders that he was having an "inappropriate relationship" with a woman. Before joining Trinity in 2018, Lawson was a pastor for over 40 years, leading churches in Arkansas and Alabama. Warren: Lawson formerly served as professor of preaching and dean of D.Min. studies at The Master's Seminary (TMS) and was a frequent preacher at John MacArthur's Grace Community Church (GCC) and its conferences. Lawson is also the founder of OnePassion Ministries, executive editor of Expositor Magazine (a ministry of OnePassion), and author of 33 books. Natasha: Next, Robert Morris turns himself in to authorities. Warren: Robert Morris, founding pastor of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, turned himself in on charges of lewd acts with children on Monday, March 17. Morris was indicted by a grand jury in Oklahoma last week on five charges of lewd or indecent acts with children. Natasha: The charges stem for allegations brought by Cindy Clemishire last year. Warren: Clemishire has accused Morris of sexually abusing her in the 1980s, starting when she was 12 years old. Morris was allegedly a 21-year-old visiting evangelist. He was married, and he and his wife had a young child. Morris resigned after the allegations became public through Clemishire's account published by The Wartburg Watch on June 14,

Today, we're discussing Steve Lawson, former Gateway Church teaching pastor, and his recent post asking forgiveness for a "sinful relationship" he had with a woman not his wife. We break down his post and what the biblical response to his public repentance ought to be, and we react to the PR surrounding the whole situation. We also take a peek at Dylan Mulvaney's new memoir, "Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer," and the media interviews he's done to promote it. Not that it's helped much; the book hasn't even broken the top 500 books on Amazon. And is it too much to ask women to simply put on a shirt while working out in a gym? Apparently so! Send us a textOn Thursday, September 19, a statement was released from Trinity Bible Church in Dallas announcing that their pastor, “Steven J. Lawson has been removed indefinitely from all ministry activities at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas. Several days ago, the elders at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas were informed by Steve Lawson of an inappropriate relationship that he has had with a woman.”The shocks of this earthquake were immediately felt throughout the Evangelical Christian world. How could the 73-year-old popular and influential theologically conservative pastor/preacher who had been in ministry for nearly 50 years, who preached at the biggest conferences around the world, who was “a preacher to aspiring preachers”, who had written dozens of books on Christian doctrine, history, and practice, fall into this kind of disqualifying sin?Surely, the best of preachers, one who fastidiously studied and accurately preached the Word with such passion and conviction, he must surely be sanctified beyond this?Someone once said, “The best of men are men at best.” Or Scripture puts it even better, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). That means all men and women. Great preachers and you and me.We will discuss this tragic news this weekend on The Christian Worldview, not in any way to judge a man, but so that all of us would “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Warren: Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, the denominational seminary for the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), acknowledged that former professor Vince Bantu engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student during his tenure there. The incident arose because of an investigative article published in Christianity Today about Bantu's alleged secret marriage. Covenant said after the student filed a Title IX complaint against Bantu, the seminary confronted him, he confessed to the relationship, and he resigned from his position in 2018. Natasha: But he didn't stop teaching. Warren: That's right, Bantu joined the faculty of Fuller Seminary in 2019 as an associate professor of church history and black church studies. Covenant said they were contacted by Fuller about the reason for his departure and they “shared with Fuller Seminary all the details of what had happened in 2018. Natasha: He doesn't just teach at Fuller, he's also a pastor. Warren: Bantu left his co-pastoring position at Outpour Community Church shortly after the Covenant complaint, and founded a new church, Beloved Community Church. He also began meeting with two other pastors as part of an accountability group. Those pastors, Darren Young and Thurman Williams, met with Bantu regularly to provide moral support and mutual discipleship. Young and Williams told CT about Bantu's alleged secret marriage to a second wife based on conversations with him during accountability meetings. They said he argued that one way for him to avoid sexual temptation was to marry multiple women. Natasha: Is Fuller doing anything about these allegations? Warren: General Counsel Lance Griffin said in a statement.

The second was a relatively brief commentary on new developments in the Steve Lawson saga. The last was a discussion of the terms pietism, Anabaptism, and sacralism, prompted by a recent webcast that identified me as a pietist and an Anabaptist.

Today we're looking at NFL legend Tony Dungy's response to Kamala Harris' statement that one doesn't need to “abandon their faith” to support abortion. He also called out the NAACP lies about Florida's Amendment 4, and we explain why he's absolutely right. Then, we check in with some crazy celebrity Kamala endorsements — Jennifer Lawrence and Hayley Williams of Paramore backed Kamala, and you probably won't be surprised at why. Yet one celebrity known for her leftist beliefs has refused to: Chappell Roan decided she can't endorse Kamala Harris and that, while she'll likely vote for her, she's skeptical of all politicians. We also check in on some illegal immigration crime that has haunted the country in the past few weeks and explain why it's so important for us to understand the gravity of this issue in particular. It's Monday, September 23rd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Indonesian church denied building permit for 10 years For 10 long years now, the 600 members of Christ Congregation Millenium Peace Church have gathered on an empty plot of land in the Kartasura District in Indonesia to worship God. They set up a large tent to shield themselves from the scorching sun and lay mats down on the ground. The Muslim-majority Indonesian government refuses to grant their request for a building permit to construct their desperately needed church building, reports International Christian Concern. Pastor Ari Suksmono said the congregation purchased land 11 years ago and requested the permit the following year. Despite the man-made obstacles, these believers recognize the truth of Psalm 96:4 which says, “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.” Please pray that the Indonesian government would grant their request to build the sanctuary for Christ Congregation Millenium Peace Church. Oprah Winfrey interviews Kamala Harris in campaign “infomercial” Last Thursday, in a Town Hall meeting called Unite for America that felt more like a Democratic infomercial, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Kamala Harris in Farmington Hills, Michigan, reported the New York Post. Early on, an audience member asked about the open border. AUDIENCE MEMBER #1: “What would be specific steps to strengthening the border?” HARRIS: “So, it's a wonderful and important question. You know, my background was as a prosecutor, and I was also the elected Attorney General for two terms of a border state. So, this is not a theoretical issue for me. This is something I've actually worked on.” AUDIENCE MEMBER #1: “Right.” HARRIS: “I have prosecuted transnational criminal organizations for the trafficking of guns, drugs and human beings, I take very seriously the importance of having a secure border and ensuring the safety of the American people.” Oddly enough, Kamala failed to talk about what she has done for the last three and a half years as Vice President and Biden's Border Czar. According to the American Federation for Immigration Reform, the total number of illegal aliens encountered since Fiscal Year 2020 now stands at over 9.4 million. There are at least 16.8 million illegal aliens in the United States, as of the beginning of 2023, which has led to a skyrocketing rise in fentanyl deaths and illegal violent crime. Kamala Harris sidesteps question on bad economy Another audience member asked Kamala Harris about the economy. AUDIENCE MEMBER #2: “We are, like many young Americans, experiencing a very high cost of living. …Our mortgage is incredibly higher than what we thought it would be. We really would love to know what your plan is to help lower the cost of living.” HARRIS: “Yours is a story I hear around the country as I travel in terms of both rightly having the right to have aspirations and dreams and ambitions for your family and working hard and finding that the American Dream, for this generation and so many recently, far more elusive than it's been. And we need to deal with that, and there are a number of ways. One is bringing down the cost of everyday necessities, including groceries.” Under Kamala Harris, who has been Vice President for the last three and a half years, grocery prices are up 25% and inflation is up 17%. Forget about what her plan is for the next four years, she didn't do it in the last four years. Kamala Harris in trouble with staff over saying she would use gun On guns, Kamala surprised Oprah. HARRIS: “I'm a gun owner. Tim Walz is a gun owner.” WINFREY: “I did not know that.” HARRIS: “If they break in my house, they're probably going to get shot.” WINFREY: “Yes, yes. I hear that. I hear that.” HARRIS: “Sorry. Probably should not have said that. (laughs) but my staff will deal with that later.” (laughs) Most Americans believe we have the right to defend ourselves and our property. Why would she be in trouble with her staff? Because Kamala Harris has advocated for gun-grabbing policies that violate the Second Amendment. Kamala claims Founding Fathers driven by abortion and gay marriage And, at the very end of the 90-minute infomercial for Kamala, Oprah asked this. WINFREY: “What is on your heart to say to the American people, as we have 47 days until November 5? What's on your heart to say to particularly those people who are still undecided or maybe indifferent or on the fence still?” HARRIS: “I love our country. I know we all do. That's why everybody's here right now. We love our country. We take pride in the privilege of being America. This is a moment where we can and must come together as Americans, understanding we have so much more in common than what separates us. Let's come together with the character that we are so proud of about who we are, which is we are an optimistic people. “Americans, by character, are people who have dreams and ambitions and aspirations. We believe in what is possible. We believe in what can be, and we believe in fighting for that. “That's how we came into being, because the people before us understood that one of the greatest expressions of patriotism is to fight for the ideals of who we are, which includes freedom to make decisions about your own body, freedom to be safe from gun violence, freedom to have access to the ballot box, freedom to be who you are and to love who you love openly and with pride, freedom to just be you.” WINFREY: “mmm” Matt Walsh: Kamala Harris is "nonsensical and evil!" Christian commentator Matt Walsh offered this analysis. WALSH: “It's nonsensical and vapid and quite verbose in the emptiest and most shallow way possible. But at the core of it, to the extent that she's saying anything at all, what she's saying is also twisted and evil. “Because the only parts that were intelligible were the parts where she says that America is built on abortion, gay marriage and gun confiscation -- the three things that the founders of our country either specifically repudiated, in the case of gun confiscation, or, in the case of the other two, never repudiated because they were so unthinkable in those days they didn't need to be addressed. And certainly three things that are not rights enumerated in the Constitution, and yet these are the rights, the ‘freedoms,' that Kamala Harris says the entire country is built on. “Nonsensical and evil!” Reformed pastor Steve Lawson resigns over sin And finally, a Texas pastor known for his fiery preaching and frequent appearances alongside John MacArthur has been removed from ministry after an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with an unidentified woman, reports The Christian Post. Steve Lawson, the 73-year-old lead preacher at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas and a prominent figure in the Reformed/Calvinist Evangelicalism movement, informed the church's elders about the relationship, according to a statement released by the church. Lawson, who holds a masters of theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Reformed Theological Seminary, will no longer be compensated by Trinity Bible Church of Dallas. The statement said, "Steve has confessed and regrets the damage he has caused to his family, the church, the reputation of OnePassion Ministries and most of all Jesus Christ. We are saddened for the glory of Christ in this matter.” He formerly served as a teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and as the dean of Doctor of Ministry Studies at The Master's Seminary but has since been removed from both websites. He wrote 36 books including The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards and The Expository Genius of John Calvin. 1 Peter 5:8 warns, "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, September 23rd, in the year of our Lord 2024. Yesterday, the elders at Trinity Bible Church in Dallas, Texas announced that their lead preacher, Steve Lawson, was involved in an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman. This revelation was serious enough to lead to Lawson's departure from TBC and likely his broader ministry career. Ligonier Ministries, where he served as a teaching fellow, and The Master's Seminary, where he held the position of Dean of D.Min. Studies, have removed him from their respective websites. This news has sent shockwaves through the Reformed evangelical community, particularly among those who have long appreciated the ministries of R.C. Sproul (Ligonier) and John MacArthur (Master's). I've received numerous messages from friends expressing their astonishment, with one asking me if it was true. Sadly, it is. The reaction earlier this year when Alistair Begg affirmed his support for attending a same-sex wedding was similar. It raises a troubling question: how can someone who taught the Scriptures so effectively find themselves compromised on such fundamental moral issues?Full article: truthscript.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/conversations-that-matter8971/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Covered a lot of stuff including answering the question, "Well, if not the Crusaders, then who should we look up to?" and "What does it mean to fight for the Kingdom of God today?"
