Building Better CMOs
Laura Jones, CMO of Instacart: Love the Challenge

Building Better CMOs

Full transcript Laura Jones is Instacart's CMO and was previously the former global head of marketing, but she never explicitly set out to get jobs like those. "How did I end up here?" she asks. "It really centers on proactively seeking out learning opportunities." After stints at Deloitte, Visa, and Google, Laura's last two job hops were both motivated by a realization that she had learned what she could from those roles and "that I wanted to continue pushing myself ... every day has been hard. It's the opposite of comfortable." That helped her reach the C-Suite because, in marketing, you need to be able to talk to all types of people — designers, data analysts, CFOs, and more. Through it all, she has been grateful for the opportunities to learn, and loved the challenges thrown at her daily. Today on Building Better CMOs, Laura talks with MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart about the convergence of commerce and video, customer-centric design, and building different products for different marketer objectives. They also discuss the challenges of today's AI, developing a unified marketing voice, and the differences between pre-IPO Uber and post-IPO Instacart. Ram Parameswaran has been dominating growth and “crossover” investing for years. He's got an incredible mind and is a fantastic sharer of ideas, trends, themes, and insights. I've had Ram on the podcast in the past to discuss his background and investing thesis. So I figured it was about time to bring him back on to talk about the future, markets, and more. Ram's firm Octahedron Capital is a crossover fund that invests in the internet economy. But before striking out on his own to start his own firm, Ram was doing big things at the multi-billion dollar firm Altimeter Capital (I've actually been a fan of Altimeter founder Brad Gerstner for some time and have shared links to his work in the past). Ram also has some big names in his past investments, including a pre-IPO Uber, Google and TikTok parent Bytedance. In this episode, Ram and I talk about investing in and demystifying the media's views of China, regulation, building infrastructure, investing in tech, no-brainer investments, SPACs, and companies like Amazon, Uber, Roobinhood, and more. I had the pleasure of having Octahedron Capital founder Ram Parameswaran on this episode of Panic. His firm Octahedron is a crossover fund that invests in the internet economy. Previously, Ram was a partner at the multi-billion dollar firm Altimeter Capital, focusing on public and private tech investments. He also has some big names in his past investments, including a pre-IPO Uber, Google and TikTok parent Bytedance. Ram has been inside the beast and is now applying it to his own markets. He’s a smart guy and public investor who knows a lot about a lot. In this episode, Ram and I discussed growth, the culture of Silicon Valley, tech, his work at Octahedron Capital, SPACs, trends in the public & private markets, crossover funds, global investing and more. WeWork has been front of mind over the past few weeks. The office space leasing company funded by Softbank's Vision Fund had expected a $47 billion value at IPO. Instead, the company had to pull its IPO as its expected value dropped to below $20 billion. Days later, the company dismissed the co-founder and CEO Adam Neumann. After pulling the IPO, questions have now arisen about WeWork's ability to stay solvent. Some estimates suggest WeWork may run out of cash within the year (for context: in 2018, WeWork lost $1.8 billion or $200k every hour). In this episode of Equity Mates, we make the case that WeWork is just the tip of a VC-fuelled, over-inflated iceberg. In fact, over the last few years a number of unprofitable unicorns (a unicorn is a private tech company valued at $1 billion or more) have gone public. It seems that public market investors are not as tolerant of companies that lose money, and this has been reflected in their share price. To give you an sense of what we're discussing, below is a list of a few companies mentioned in this episode and their share price movement since IPO (price as of recording date): • WeWork pulled IPO • Uber down 29% • Lyft down 50% • Slack down 33% • Spotify down 21% • Snapchat down 46% • Dropbox down 31% • Peloton down 19% In this episode you will learn: • How WeWork is just the tip of the iceberg of tech unicorns now struggling in public markets • What led to these inflated valuations in the first place • How the iPhone's release in 2007 sparked a decade-long, venture capital boom • What recent VC megadeals, including deals by Softbank, have meant for these companies • Why now is the time that this VC bubble is ending • How public market investors should think about these events Remember, our live show are coming up fast. Uber, the rideshare app, recently was valued at $80 Billion and placed it's IPO. In turn, drivers for Uber and Lyft have turned off their ride share apps to protest. These drivers are bringing the inequality of pay, driving conditions, and lack of job security to light. Overall, this strike during UBER's IPO has helped aid in a bit of a stumble for the company. So this week, we sat down and talked about how this problem could be solved. Further, looking into the variables that affect a Uber or Lyft driver's day to day routes. Thank you for listening and please let us know what you think could help ride share programs such as Uber and Lyft to help their contractors.
