Fast food workers in California are seeing an increase in their paychecks. This is because of a recent minimum wage law that went into effect earlier this month. The law requires fast food chains like McDonald's and Starbucks to pay workers $20 per hour. It will also affect restaurants that have at least 60 other locations nationwide. Opponents of the law say it will lead to layoffs and store closures . . . but for fast food workers who have been fighting for better pay, this could mean being able to get a decent living wage. Fast Company Staff Writer Pavithra Mohan joined us to unpack it all. For more on this, check out Pavithra's reporting. Then we chatted with Lyft CEO David Risher about taking over the company after cofounders Logan Green and John Zimmer left a year ago, having to lay off more than a quarter of the company's workforce last April, and focusing on his key strategy: “customer obsession drives profitable growth.” We also discussed the company's future in Minneapolis, whether self-driving cars will transform the industry, and what Risher learned heading up U.S. retail at Amazon under Jeff Bezos.

Harry Campbell aka The Rideshare Guy joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the rideshare industry, the role that power drivers play in the ecosystem and his thoughts on Uber's growing hybrid network. The conversation begins with Grayson and Harry discussing Uber's outperformance compared to the S&P 500. Over the last 12 months, Uber has outperformed the S&P 500 by 102%. While Uber is outperforming the market, their competitor Lyft is struggling to figure out the future of their business. Drivers are the backbone of both Uber and Lyft. According to J.P. Morgan, the average Uber driver earns $33 an hour. The estimated average hourly earnings are only for Period 3, commonly referred to as active time. Period 1 is when a driver is on the Uber app waiting for a ride. Period 2 is when a driver has accepted a ride and are driving to pick up the passenger. Period 3, that's when you make the most amount of money as a driver. You want your wheels moving, you want to be going fast, you want to be going far. That's kind of how you make the most amount of money. $33 an hour is basically saying drivers make $33 an hour when they are driving to a customer or they have a customer in the car, but we are not going to count any of the downtime. – Harry Campbell While drivers are the backbone of the platforms, there are divergences in how Uber and Lyft attract and retain drivers. Both companies use incentives to retain drivers, Lyft is starting to increase the amount incentives to attract power drivers away from Uber. Power drivers are drivers who drive more than 40+ hours a week or roughly 6,000 miles per month. Accounting for 20% of the driver inventory at any moment. As Uber continues to grow and shed non-core assets, the company is laying the foundation to transform Uber into a hybrid platform with both drivers and autonomous vehicles. Today, you can hail a Waymo in Phoenix on the Uber app and have Uber Eats delivered in a Motional autonomous vehicle in Santa Monica. When it comes to Uber's strategy with AV, I think it's kind of a no-brainer. – Harry Campbell This is the right strategy for Uber. Dara Khosrowshahi made the strategic decision to sell Uber ATG to Aurora and focus on becoming a platform again. Uber was able to shed the billions in development costs, while fully embracing the power of Uber — the platform. This decision has allowed Uber to focus on growing their free cash flow while becoming profitable. The Uber 2.0 strategy will enable Uber to collect a fee very similar to the way Mastercard and Visa collect swipe fees every time a consumer makes a purchase with their credit card. The more consumers choose to ride in Waymo vehicles on the Uber platform, the more revenue Uber will generate. Uber's new autonomous vehicle strategy will pay dividends as Waymo scales up. If the price of a Waymo is on par with Uber X, consumers in our opinion will overwhelmingly choose Waymo because of the consistent experience. Either way, Uber benefits as the company will collect a platform usage fee. Wrapping up the conversation, Harry shares his opinion on the future of Uber. After a Lyft driver nabbed Tux the cat in Austin, TX, her human turned to social media for help. Palash Pandey's posts went viral, a massive search ensued, and Lyft CEO David Risher hired private investigators to locate the feline. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Visit betterhelp.com/DUBIOUS today to get 10% off your first month of therapy. The unprecedented chain of events began on September 30, 2023, when Palash Pandey ordered a Lyft to take his cat, Tux, to the vet at Banfield Pet Hospital in Austin, Texas. As he made his way around the vehicle to grab Tux, who was located on the passenger side, the driver sped off. Desperate, Palash tried to contact the driver, even offered him money to bring Tux back, but to no avail. 1 Palash then turned to Reddit and Twitter X. His posts went viral, galvanizing the online community and putting pressure on Lyft who was facing a PR cat-astrophe. If you like our content, please become a patron to get all our episodes ad-free. After 36 hours, private investigators hired by Lyft CEO David Risher found Tux 1.2 miles away from the vet's office, where she had been kidnapped from. She was dehydrated, covered in fleas and terrified, but otherwise unharmed. The driver has been deactivated on the Lyft platform on October 2, and the Austin Police Department are investigating the case. 2 In this episode we also discuss the legal aspect related to pets being considered property instead of sentient beings, and we look at safe alternatives to ridesharing involving human drivers: Robotaxis such as Waymo made by Alphabet and Cruise made by General Motors are looking promising. 1. palashpandey9 Need help!! In a harrowing turn of events, a vigilant Lyft driver's quick thinking reportedly prevented what could have been a tragic outcome in Chicago. As distressing details surface about the incident, the importance of following one's instincts, even in seemingly routine situations, comes to the fore. Jeremiah Campbell, 29, found himself in the midst of a controversy when a Lyft driver, transporting him and his two-year-old son to an address on South Shore Drive, dialed 911. The driver had overheard Campbell utter disturbing remarks about intending to drown his son as a sacrifice to Jehovah. On that very night, an anonymous call was made from the South Shore Drive residence, reporting a child having drowned in a bathtub. This led the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to the scene promptly. Upon their arrival, their attempts to get a response by knocking went unanswered. However, a glance through the window revealed a concerning sight: a man, later identified as Campbell, making suspicious movements over the bathtub. Relying on the information from the Lyft driver and the subsequent call, CPD officers believed they were witnessing a potential drowning in progress. Their immediate decision to intervene was pivotal. They forced their way inside, prompting Campbell to hastily remove the child from the water. The toddler, drenched and coughing, was quickly handed over to the paramedics, who transported him to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, Campbell was detained and also sent for a mental health evaluation. Tonya, a witness to the events that night, described the situation as "awful." The haunting scene reminded her of her own grandson, reinforcing the gravity of what could have been a devastating tragedy. Campbell is no stranger to the law. Court records reveal his previous conviction in a 2021 case where he was found guilty of aggravated battery resulting in significant bodily harm and domestic battery leading to bodily harm. As a result, he was handed a 36-month probation sentence in November 2021. Furthermore, he had violated a protection order which barred him from contacting the victim, his child's mother, and other family members. He is currently being held without bail at the Cook County Jail. Local resident Chris Beasley expressed his shock upon hearing the allegations. As a father, he found it difficult to fathom such a horrifying act. He, along with several others interviewed by WGN-TV, commended the Lyft driver for his timely action. Beasley emphasized the importance of speaking out even if one might be unsure, "It's better to say something and nothing's behind it, than to not say something and something bad happens." Lyft's response to the incident was swift and supportive. In a statement released to WGN-TV, a spokesperson praised the driver's prompt action, saying, "We applaud the quick thinking and courage of the Lyft driver who reported the suspicious rider behavior to the authorities." Lyft has since permanently removed Campbell's account from their platform and has offered their cooperation in the ongoing investigation. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can lurk in everyday situations. The Lyft driver's instinctive response undeniably saved a young boy from impending danger. As the story unfolds, it underscores the value of vigilance, intuition, and the power of taking swift action when something feels amiss. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
