Jared, Oriana and Ned continue our own epic trilogy with a look at our collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Two Towers. Turning 20 years old this month, The Two Towers built on the success of the previous year's The Fellowship of the Ring, becoming another holiday blockbuster and continuing the overall story, as well as introducing the wider world to a variety of striking performances, among them Bernard Hill as Theoden, Miranda Otto as Eowyn and most famously and indelibly, Andy Serkis's compelling performance as Gollum, further interpreted by the Weta digital effects team to bring the character to life as an animation. All three of us have our own distinct memories and experiences of watching it for the first time and we've seen it any number of times since, but returning to it as a standalone film – as with our previous Fellowship episode, we went back to the original theatrical cut – made something clear to us: it's not all that great. Many different moments are absolutely indelible as already noted and there's no way something like The Rings of Power can even come close to it, but compared to the absolute triumph of Jackson's Fellowship, his Two Towers is the odd one out of the series as a whole. What about the structure of the story as adapted, filmed and edited meant that this might have always been the weak center of the sequence? What moments in particular are absolutely perfect – and what decisions are baffling then and now? Exactly how much Helm's Deep did there have to be in the first place – and do all the decisions that go into the making of that sequence as being central rest on the best foundation? And how great does Serkis's performance and the realization of Gollum as a character remain overall? (Answer: utterly.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. What a way to start up again.We do miss the Huorns, even if they showed up a little bit in the extended version – but not by name.It's a mix of perfect moments and ‘hmmm' bits but the whole start to the Helm's Deep battle definitely is key to the film.Arwen was indeed filmed at being at Helm's Deep and there are background images of her here and there. (Lindsay Ellis's essay the other month has a bit more about that.)Zulu, the British film from 1964 that inspired Jackson's take on Helm's Deep, is…a caution. (As stated, Zulu Dawn is more interesting in comparison.)The look on Theoden's face after he takes in the explosion – that's good acting.Edoras, an absolute triumph of set design, construction, visual effects and cinematography – so it was, so it remains. Sunday from a couple of years ago.)Feel free to pick up a copy of The Deadwood Bible by Matt Zoller Seitz if you like, and appreciate Oriana's work helping make it happen!Brad Dourif's tear (and the scene overall). (The warg attack scene, less so.)Where to begin with Gollum? Frustratingly the extended Two Towers documentary segment on Gollum doesn't appear to be on YouTube but Serkis's book on working on the character is easily available and a very good read.Do you really want to know about the monkey from the 1997 Lost in Space? Do you? Fine. Enjoy a video tribute. Now Gollum does act like a cat here, true. And the ‘yeees?!?' moment remains awesome.The self-confrontation scene. You know it.“PO-TA-TOES.”The buildup to Gollum snarling “My PRECIOUS!” at Faramir is truly striking.David Wenham dealing with Van Helsing. The film that is. (And yeah yeah 300.)Gandalf returns and Ian McKellen's hair levels up.The whole “give up the weapons/wink/'I TOLD you to take the WIZARD'S STAFF'” sequence – just a treat.The meat was always on the menu, really.“The Riders of Rohan” is one of Howard Shore's most gripping pieces, still.“Gollum's Song” is really good if you haven't heard it in a bit. (Emiliana Torrini's website will be back soon, it seems.)Sheila Chandra = next level. Composed in 1953 and translated from Gaelic or Latin poems, Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs Op. 29 ranks among the great song cycles of the twentieth century. Barber was naturally drawn to vocal expression in his compositions. Upon discovering the verses, he said: "I have come across some poems of the 10th century, translated into Modern English by various people, and am making a song cycle of them. These were extraordinary men, monks or hermits or what not and they wrote these little poems. В юбилейном эпизоде мне позволено все, поэтому я ставлю пластинки без привязки к году выпуску. Вот к примеру, данный релиз берлинского импринта Pampa Records у нас 2013 года выпуска, но звучит актуально и сегодня.Коллаборация известнейших британских музыкантов Nick Warren и Nick Brennan, более известного под псевдонимом Tripswitch вылилась в мелодичную работу под названием Savannah. Пластинка вышла на лейбле Sudbeat, владельцем которого является не менее известный диск-жокей Hernan Cattaneo.Еще один британец Midland у меня сегодня представлен потрясающим релизом Through Motion и снова как говорится, музыка возраста не имеет. Нежные и красивые вибрации несет в себе Through Motion - трек, который никого не оставит равнодушным и покорит сердца после первого же свидания.Еще одна коллаборация артиста из Эдинбурга Kieran Apter и Leon Power с потрясающим релизом Drifting Spring, который вышел на культовом британском лейбле Anjunadeep. Великолепные пады, нежный, я бы даже сказал умиротворенный вокал, в этой работе есть все, что было необходимо боссам лейбла для включения данного творения в ежегодную серию компиляций Anjunadeep 09.Многие музыканты в свое время писали ремиксы на трек My White Zebra, автором коего является берлинский музыкант Райан Дэвис. Сегодня я хочу поделиться красивым и мелодичным ремиксом от артистки из Роттердама Estroe Roozendaal, которая работает под псевдонимом Estroe.Коллаборация Aruba & Lonya подарила музыкальному миру глубокий трек Cannibals, который еще на несколько минут приближает нас к экватору сегодняшней программы. Ребята прекрасно засемплировали вокал в данной работе, слушается все это очень круто!Завершаю я первую часть эфира великолепнейшим треком Todo y Nada от аргентинского музыканта родом из Буэнос-Айреса Crudito Sava. Хочу отметить тот факт, как красиво ложится данная пластинка под Cannibals - они как будто созданы друг для друга :)Телепортировать во времена, когда проект MAXIMUM только рождался и формировался на электронной сцене нас будет проект Dr. K & Nii vs. Shiha и их трек Am Alive. Фирменный по звучанию ремикс сделал уважаемый Martin Roth, а волшебный вокал принадлежит вокалисте из США Sarah Blacker. Когда же наступит кульминация, шикарные рифы введут в состояние эйфории и это один из тех случаев, когда трек нужно обязательно дослушать до конца, дабы кайфануть по настоящему.Всем известный, я бы даже сказал легендарный Rymd Is Answer в коллаборации Danny Tenaglia и Eric Prydz повышает градус программы до MAXIMUM, а это знак, что пора наконец танцевать.Любимый мною британский лейбл Baroque у меня сегодня представлен напористой пластинкой Run Away от канадского дуэта Shiloh. Звук, шикарнейший грув, бас и надолго заседающая в голове "Run Away" как всегда проработаны до мелочей. Shiloh в то время были очень активны и их релизы не покидали треклисты топовых диск-жокеев.С радостью представляю трек британского мастера James Harcourt под названием Schadenfreude, что в переводе означает "злорадство". Лично я ничего такого в нем не заметил, наоборот, работа очень жизнерадостная, сочная, одним словом максимальная.В моей сумке давно лежит пластинка Terrace Attack от Daley Padley и Chris Special с потрясным ремиксом британца Ben Macklin. Трек обвешан массой эффектов, сочными лидами, что делает его абсолютным фаворитом в peak-time на танцполе. Выход из последней ямы вообще достоен самых приятнейших отзывов и похвал.Коллаборация канадцев Adam K и Dataworx подарила дэнс-индустрии киллера танцполов под названием Pushin. Плотнейшая бочка, задушевная атмосфера вытащат на танцпол даже человека с железобетонным сердцем.Еще одна коллаборация Adam K, на этот раз с американцем Anthony Maniscalco, творящим под псевдонимом Hook N Sling. Их напористый трек Working Kings Cross заставит вас активнее двигаться на танцполе. Здесь мне очень нравятся транс-подобные лиды, которые максимально украшают данную работу.Подтянулась тяжелая артилерия в лице Dinka и George F. Zimmer с их прекрасной работой Soma Is Language, которую еще больше приукрасил своим ремиксом российский музыкант Владимир Ершов, который известен в музыкальном бизнесе по псевдониму Proff.Ремикс получился очень мелодичным, жизнерадостным, максимальным по своему настроению, по своей сути.Дальше идет незабываемая классика, шлягер от звездного трансового проекта Three Drives под названием Greece 2000, на который было сделано не один десяток ремиксов. Хит Greece 2000 долгое время штурмовал европейские и мировые танцполы. Далее он начал покорять ведущие мировые чарты и оказался на 12-м месте в британском Official U.K Singles Chart! Трек был подписан на множество лейблов, включен во многие сборники, ремикширован массой музыкантов в лице SNAP, Binary Finary, Ferry Corsten, The Vengaboys, Saucerman, Airscape и многими другими счастливчиками, среди которых оказался и швейцарский проект Chris Reece, прогрессивный ремикс которого я сегодня и представляю.Талантливейший канадский дуэт Delerium порадовал своих почитателей искуснейшей и тончайшей музыкой. Назвать данный продукт "треком" как-то язык не поворачивается, так как он достоен более весомого именования, например "произведение искусства". Ремикс от американца Morgan Page - это добротный progressive sound, с берущим за душу до мурашек по коже, почти оперным вокалом Isabel Bayrakdarian.На финишной прямой юбилейной программы еще одна шедевральная работа. Ждать новых версий этого шедевра пришлось на момент данного релиза целых 9 лет, так как оригинал 1998 года узнавал по первым распевам "Oh no nooo" каждый уважающий себя клаббер. Из всего богатства ремиксов мне запал в душу только один от Eric Smax и Thomas Gold. Он отличается весьма запоминающейся бас-линией и красивым развитием.Ну а в рубрике Bonus Track у меня сегодня большая премьера. Сразу хочу отметить тот факт, что я держал эту вещь довольно долго в своих архивах, держал специально для юбилейного эпизода. Результат совместной международной работы известнейшего британского продюсера по имени Реданка и украинской группы Друга Ріка. Реданка сделал великолепнейший ремикс на известный и ставший в свое время весьма популярным хит "Так Мало Тут Тебе". Напомню, что Реданка является известнейшим ремиксером и продюсером в мире. Напомню, что увидело свет моё детище (да, могу уже его так называть) в середине 2008 года, поэтому в этом году нам уже 10 лет :) Очень важным остается тот факт, что звучание/направление, с которым у слушателя асоциируется проект MAXIMUM последние десять лет остается progressive. Издал данный релиз рекорд-лейбл Life And Death.Давным-давно хотел поиграть трек Allowance от Isolee у себя в радиошоу. В юбилейном эпизоде мне позволено все, поэтому я ставлю пластинки без привязки к году выпуску. Вот к примеру, данный релиз берлинского импринта Pampa Records у нас 2013 года выпуска, но звучит актуально и сегодня.Коллаборация известнейших британских музыкантов Nick Warren и Nick Brennan, более известного под псевдонимом Tripswitch вылилась в мелодичную работу под названием Savannah. Пластинка вышла на лейбле Sudbeat, владельцем которого является не менее известный диск-жокей Hernan Cattaneo.Еще один британец Midland у меня сегодня представлен потрясающим релизом Through Motion и снова как говорится, музыка возраста не имеет. Нежные и красивые вибрации несет в себе Through Motion - трек, который никого не оставит равнодушным и покорит сердца после первого же свидания.Еще одна коллаборация артиста из Эдинбурга Kieran Apter и Leon Power с потрясающим релизом Drifting Spring, который вышел на культовом британском лейбле Anjunadeep. Великолепные пады, нежный, я бы даже сказал умиротворенный вокал, в этой работе есть все, что было необходимо боссам лейбла для включения данного творения в ежегодную серию компиляций Anjunadeep 09.Многие музыканты в свое время писали ремиксы на трек My White Zebra, автором коего является берлинский музыкант Райан Дэвис. Сегодня я хочу поделиться красивым и мелодичным ремиксом от артистки из Роттердама Estroe Roozendaal, которая работает под псевдонимом Estroe.Коллаборация Aruba & Lonya подарила музыкальному миру глубокий трек Cannibals, который еще на несколько минут приближает нас к экватору сегодняшней программы. Ребята прекрасно засемплировали вокал в данной работе, слушается все это очень круто!Завершаю я первую часть эфира великолепнейшим треком Todo y Nada от аргентинского музыканта родом из Буэнос-Айреса Crudito Sava. Хочу отметить тот факт, как красиво ложится данная пластинка под Cannibals - они как будто созданы друг для друга :)Телепортировать во времена, когда проект MAXIMUM только рождался и формировался на электронной сцене нас будет проект Dr. K & Nii vs. Shiha и их трек Am Alive. Фирменный по звучанию ремикс сделал уважаемый Martin Roth, а волшебный вокал принадлежит вокалисте из США Sarah Blacker. Когда же наступит кульминация, шикарные рифы введут в состояние эйфории и это один из тех случаев, когда трек нужно обязательно дослушать до конца, дабы кайфануть по настоящему.Всем известный, я бы даже сказал легендарный Rymd Is Answer в коллаборации Danny Tenaglia и Eric Prydz повышает градус программы до MAXIMUM, а это знак, что пора наконец танцевать.Любимый мною британский лейбл Baroque у меня сегодня представлен напористой пластинкой Run Away от канадского дуэта Shiloh. Звук, шикарнейший грув, бас и надолго заседающая в голове "Run Away" как всегда проработаны до мелочей. Shiloh в то время были очень активны и их релизы не покидали треклисты топовых диск-жокеев.С радостью представляю трек британского мастера James Harcourt под названием Schadenfreude, что в переводе означает "злорадство". Лично я ничего такого в нем не заметил, наоборот, работа очень жизнерадостная, сочная, одним словом максимальная.В моей сумке давно лежит пластинка Terrace Attack от Daley Padley и Chris Special с потрясным ремиксом британца Ben Macklin. Трек обвешан массой эффектов, сочными лидами, что делает его абсолютным фаворитом в peak-time на танцполе. Выход из последней ямы вообще достоен самых приятнейших отзывов и похвал.Коллаборация канадцев Adam K и Dataworx подарила дэнс-индустрии киллера танцполов под названием Pushin. Плотнейшая бочка, задушевная атмосфера вытащат на танцпол даже человека с железобетонным сердцем.Еще одна коллаборация Adam K, на этот раз с американцем Anthony Maniscalco, творящим под псевдонимом Hook N Sling. Их напористый трек Working Kings Cross заставит вас активнее двигаться на танцполе. Здесь мне очень нравятся транс-подобные лиды, которые максимально украшают данную работу.Подтянулась тяжелая артилерия в лице Dinka и George F. Zimmer с их прекрасной работой Soma Is Language, которую еще больше приукрасил своим ремиксом российский музыкант Владимир Ершов, который известен в музыкальном бизнесе по псевдониму Proff.Ремикс получился очень мелодичным, жизнерадостным, максимальным по своему настроению, по своей сути.Дальше идет незабываемая классика, шлягер от звездного трансового проекта Three Drives под названием Greece 2000, на который было сделано не один десяток ремиксов. Хит Greece 2000 долгое время штурмовал европейские и мировые танцполы. Далее он начал покорять ведущие мировые чарты и оказался на 12-м месте в британском Official U.K Singles Chart! Трек был подписан на множество лейблов, включен во многие сборники, ремикширован массой музыкантов в лице SNAP, Binary Finary, Ferry Corsten, The Vengaboys, Saucerman, Airscape и многими другими счастливчиками, среди которых оказался и швейцарский проект Chris Reece, прогрессивный ремикс которого я сегодня и представляю.Талантливейший канадский дуэт Delerium порадовал своих почитателей искуснейшей и тончайшей музыкой. Назвать данный продукт "треком" как-то язык не поворачивается, так как он достоен более весомого именования, например "произведение искусства". Ремикс от американца Morgan Page - это добротный progressive sound, с берущим за душу до мурашек по коже, почти оперным вокалом Isabel Bayrakdarian.На финишной прямой юбилейной программы еще одна шедевральная работа. Ждать новых версий этого шедевра пришлось на момент данного релиза целых 9 лет, так как оригинал 1998 года узнавал по первым распевам "Oh no nooo" каждый уважающий себя клаббер. Из всего богатства ремиксов мне запал в душу только один от Eric Smax и Thomas Gold. Он отличается весьма запоминающейся бас-линией и красивым развитием.Ну а в рубрике Bonus Track у меня сегодня большая премьера. Сразу хочу отметить тот факт, что я держал эту вещь довольно долго в своих архивах, держал специально для юбилейного эпизода. Результат совместной международной работы известнейшего британского продюсера по имени Реданка и украинской группы Друга Ріка. Реданка сделал великолепнейший ремикс на известный и ставший в свое время весьма популярным хит "Так Мало Тут Тебе". Напомню, что Реданка является известнейшим ремиксером и продюсером в мире. How and why young people, who have grown up in western countries, are being recruited to terrorist groups and the effect it’s having on the families they leave behind, is the focus of the new documentary A JIHADI IN THE FAMILY. Unlike many parents who fear to speak publicly about what happened to their children, Christianne’s response to this tragedy is to personally take on the battle against ISIS.  Driven to understand the destructive path her son chose, Christianne embarks on a journey to meet others who have a stake in the issue. Her quest for answers takes her to her son's imam, to counter-terrorism experts, and to a man who survived his own experience with extremists and became a crusader against their recruiters.
