They remember all of these things from much better movies than the newest entry in the Lord of the Rings cinematic universe: The War of the Rohirrim. New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers hoped other LOTR fans also remembered these things and wanted to see a two hour and fifteen minute long movie to learn how Helm's Deep received its moniker. They were shockingly mistaken as no one is going to theaters to see this animated picture. Il passaggio della grigia compagnia (The Passing of the Grey Company)La narrazione ritorna a Dol Baran, dove Gandalf e Pipino hanno lasciato la compagnia. Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Théoden e Éomer sono raggiunti dalla cosiddetta "Grigia Compagnia", un gruppo di Raminghi del Nord della stessa stirpe di Aragorn, partiti da Gran Burrone insieme ad Elladan ed Elrohir, figli di Elrond Mezzelfo. Insieme si dirigono verso il Fosso di Helm. Ivi arrivati Merry pone la sua spada al servizio di Re Théoden e, mentre fervono i preparativi per la guerra e si elaborano le necessarie strategie, Aragorn decide di giocare un'astuta quanto pericolosa mossa: immerge il suo sguardo nel palantír di Orthanc, rivelandosi così a Sauron per quello che egli è: il legittimo Re di Gondor. Adesso il mortale nemico sa di dover fare i conti anche con l'erede di Isildur, e questo potrebbe fargli fare qualche mossa avventata, oltre che fargli distogliere l'attenzione dal Portatore dell'Anello. Tuttavia, dalla antica pietra, Aragorn apprende anche della reale entità delle forze nemiche e delle loro imminenti mosse e, poiché il tempo per preparare l'esercito sembra non essere sufficiente, decide di percorrere il cosiddetto Sentiero dei Morti: una strada misteriosa e lugubre che nessuno è mai riuscito a percorrere per intero e su cui circolano nefaste leggende. Accompagnato dalla "Grigia Compagnia" - a cui si aggiungono gli immancabili Legolas e Gimli - egli, dunque, si reca ad Edoras e quindi a Dunclivo. Lì Éowyn prova, senza successo, prima di dissuaderlo di intraprendere quella strada e poi di accompagnarlo lungo il sentiero dei morti. La compagnia attraversa il tunnel sotterraneo dei morti e ivi convocano tutti i morti presso il colle di Erech. Alla roccia di Erech, Aragorn, chiede ai morti di fare fede al giuramento che tempo addietro, quando in vita, avevano fatto ad Isildur e seguirlo per spazzare i servitori di Sauron. Solo dopo questo il giuramento può considerarsi mantenuto e i morti potranno avere pace.

Jared, Oriana and Ned continue our own epic trilogy with a look at our collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Two Towers. Turning 20 years old this month, The Two Towers built on the success of the previous year's The Fellowship of the Ring, becoming another holiday blockbuster and continuing the overall story, as well as introducing the wider world to a variety of striking performances, among them Bernard Hill as Theoden, Miranda Otto as Eowyn and most famously and indelibly, Andy Serkis's compelling performance as Gollum, further interpreted by the Weta digital effects team to bring the character to life as an animation. All three of us have our own distinct memories and experiences of watching it for the first time and we've seen it any number of times since, but returning to it as a standalone film – as with our previous Fellowship episode, we went back to the original theatrical cut – made something clear to us: it's not all that great. Many different moments are absolutely indelible as already noted and there's no way something like The Rings of Power can even come close to it, but compared to the absolute triumph of Jackson's Fellowship, his Two Towers is the odd one out of the series as a whole. What about the structure of the story as adapted, filmed and edited meant that this might have always been the weak center of the sequence? What moments in particular are absolutely perfect – and what decisions are baffling then and now? Exactly how much Helm's Deep did there have to be in the first place – and do all the decisions that go into the making of that sequence as being central rest on the best foundation? And how great does Serkis's performance and the realization of Gollum as a character remain overall? (Answer: utterly.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. (Lindsay Ellis's essay the other month has a bit more about that.)Zulu, the British film from 1964 that inspired Jackson's take on Helm's Deep, is…a caution. (As stated, Zulu Dawn is more interesting in comparison.)The look on Theoden's face after he takes in the explosion – that's good acting.Edoras, an absolute triumph of set design, construction, visual effects and cinematography – so it was, so it remains. Do you? Fine. Enjoy a video tribute. Now Gollum does act like a cat here, true. And the ‘yeees?!?' moment remains awesome.The self-confrontation scene. You know it.“PO-TA-TOES.”The buildup to Gollum snarling “My PRECIOUS!” at Faramir is truly striking.David Wenham dealing with Van Helsing. The film that is. (And yeah yeah 300.)Gandalf returns and Ian McKellen's hair levels up.The whole “give up the weapons/wink/'I TOLD you to take the WIZARD'S STAFF'” sequence – just a treat.The meat was always on the menu, really.“The Riders of Rohan” is one of Howard Shore's most gripping pieces, still.“Gollum's Song” is really good if you haven't heard it in a bit. T. E. E. in Edoras

A very trudge-focused section! The dreary people of Edoras are hightailing it out of town to the fortress of Helm's Deep, and trudging is what they do. Éowyn is boy-crazy for 87-year-old boy Aragorn, and shows it by serving him a stew of raw raccoon meat floating in hot saliva. Meanwhile the new comedy duo of Saruman-N-Wormtongue get all giggly thinking of wargs eating children. Plus: we've got elves again.

We're hanging out with the horselords for a while. Having funerals, discussing imminent war, performing wizard-exorcisms. It's a fun place these days. Also, Edoras: magnificent seat of kings or scrubby little town? Finally, the new duo of Saruman and Wormtongue start their twisted relationship, and all the couples counselors in Middle Earth can't help them.

Ahh it's a beautiful day in Middle Earth, the sun is shining over the Dead Marshes, the horses are running wild in Edoras, the Orcs are marching to Helm's Deep, and Friday Island's very own Sam and Frodo (Zach and Neil) are discussing The Two Towers! How did they master the motion capture for Gollum? What differences were made between the book and the movie? And what went into creating the Ent, Treebeard? Our heroes ride up the long and winding road that leads to Théoden’s door, but first they have to get through two sets of guards. Fortunately, Gandalf’s polyglottal talents get them through the first gate into Edoras, and they’ll be allowed into Meduseld itself just as long as they check their weapons at the door… their ancient, irreplaceable, priceless weapons. Inspired by Tolkien’s skill with Latin and Greek, Shawn takes a stab at speaking Old English; and a sidebar on Helm Hammerhand sends a chill down our spines.

The newly-minted Gandalf the White advises the Three Hunters to leave the Hobbits in the strong, twiggy hands of Treebeard and go to Edoras. They agree, but Legolas still wants to know how Gandalf is — y’know, not dead — launching the wizard into a brief account of his fight with Durin’s Bane, and your hosts into an epic series of sidebars about Gandalf’s resurrection, mythology, and religion. All this, plus a Tolkien Quote of the Day about sacrifice, and a couple of mailbag stumpers that make Alan question the wisdom of letting Shawn pick the questions.

The Passing of the Grey Company - Back in Isengard, Théoden prepares to return to Edoras to gather soldiers, then march to Gondor to join in the fight against Sauron. As they ride, another group of riders overtakes them. They turn out to be other Rangers—Aragorn's people from the north—as well as Elladan and Elrohir, the sons of Elrond. Elrohir bears a message from Elrond to Aragorn: "The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the Paths of the Dead," and Halbarad, one of the Rangers, brings Aragorn a staff wound around with cloth—a present from Arwen. For the time being, Aragon does not unwind it. Merry becomes an esquire of Rohan and plans to travel to Gondor with the king. But Aragorn decides to part company with the king of Rohan and take the Paths of the Dead instead. This route will be faster, but more dangerous. The Rangers, the sons of Elrond, and Legolas and Gimli travel with Aragorn, hoping to reach Gondor in time to make a difference in the battle. To add to the urgency, Aragorn, as rightful owner of the palantír, uses the stone to assess Sauron's forces and reveal himself to Sauron, hoping to cause Sauron to strike in haste, unprepared. Aragorn and his Company enter the Paths of the Dead, and the dead gather around. Long ago, they broke their oath to fight Sauron with Isildur, and he cursed them. To break the curse and find peace, Aragorn tells them they must fulfill their oath to Isildur's heir—Aragorn himself. The dead follow Aragorn.

The Voice of Saruman - Gandalf needs to speak to Saruman. He lets the others come along, and they go together to Orthanc. Saruman, whose voice can mesmerize, tries to win over Théoden with his beautiful voice. When this is unsuccessful, he tries to convince Gandalf to join him. Gandalf is having none of it, however, and casts Saruman out of the Council of the Wise, and breaks his staff. As they turn to leave, Wormtongue throws a large, round object out of the window at them. Pippin picks it up, but Gandalf immediately takes it away. Gandalf, Aragorn, Pippin, Merry, Gimli, Legolas, and those from Rohan prepare to leave for Edoras, leaving Treebeard in charge of making sure Saruman does not escape. The Ents promise to watch Saruman carefully.

The King of the Golden Hall - Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas arrive at Edoras, but the guards outside Théoden's Golden Hall are strangely suspicious and unfriendly. Háma, Théoden's doorwarden, demands they leave their weapons at the door before entering, which they are reluctant to do. Gandalf is permitted to keep his staff. Inside the hall, they find Théoden in bad shape. Bent and feeble, he insults Gandalf, saying he only brings bad news. It becomes clear the king's adviser, Gríma Wormtongue, is encouraging Théoden's defeatist attitude. Gandalf uses his magic to silence Wormtongue and has some harsh words for him, exposing him as a thief, manipulator, and agent of Saruman. Gandalf and Théoden send Wormtongue away to join Saruman, if he dares confront the wizard's displeasure at his failing. Théoden, freed from Wormtongue's influence, seems to regain his former strength and courage. Éomer, who had been imprisoned on the ill advice of Wormtongue, is released, and they all prepare for war against Saruman. Éowyn, the king's niece, is to be left in charge while the Men go to battle. She is not pleased.

The White Rider - Returning to Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, the story finds them hunting for clues to the mysterious old man's identity. Aragorn searches, but is unable to find footprints. And he recalls the horses didn't make sounds as if frightened. They do find more evidence that Pippin and Merry escaped and are somewhere in the forest, including a leaf from Lothlórien with a few crumbs of the Elves' lembasbread. Following signs of Merry and Pippin's presence, they go deeper into Fangorn. As they track the two hobbits, Aragorn also sees some puzzling footprints (which are, of course, Treebeard's). Suddenly, Legolas sees a mysterious old man approaching. At first, the three seem to think the man may be Saruman, and are not sure if they should defend themselves. But soon, the man reveals he is Gandalf, miraculously returned from the dead. He is now wearing white robes, a change from the gray he used to wear. Gandalf shares news, reassuring them Aragorn's decisions have not caused disaster: Merry and Pippin are safe with the Ents, and the Ring-bearer is on his own path, beyond their help. He confirms Saruman is corrupt with desire for the Ring, and tells them Sauron is so occupied with preparing for war he may not notice what Frodo is doing. He also tells them what happened after he fell into the chasm in Moria, and brings prophetic messages from Galadriel. Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, and Legolas decide to present themselves to Théoden, the king of Rohan, in the city of Edoras. Gandalf summons his white horse, Shadowfax, who arrives accompanied by the two horses Éomer lent them. They mount the horses and depart.

We talk all things Two Towers! Jam packed with Sweet Movie Morsels, Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar and we go to Edoras then to Helms Deep. Stay sweet!

Éomer bends the rules “just this once” to let the wanderers go free in Rohan, and even lends them cocon— uh, horses* to ride, on the condition that after they find the bodies— uh, their friends*, they return the rentals to Edoras in good condition and hand the keys back directly to Théoden King. They ride quickly to the Entwash and camp near the edge of Fangorn Forest, where a mysterious visitor appears and makes them wish they’d sprung for the loss damage waiver. (*We apologize for the fault in the blurbs. Those responsible have been sacked.)

The journey continues! Gollum! Helm’s Deep! Treebeard! A king’s advisor who should’ve been disqualified if Edoras ran background checks or just hearing the name Grima friggin’ Wormtongue! Don’t follow the lights but please follow us & Whitney Pirnik as we cover Act 2 of Lord of the Rings!
