This week on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast, Geordie & Michelle discuss risky behaviours...Michelle looks at the disturbing and harrowing case of serial killer nurse Charles Cullen. Every time Charles Cullen got a new job at a new hospital, patients begin dying in mysterious and unexplained ways. IV bags suddenly become contaminated. People were dying from high levels of strange meds. Although suspicion was directed towards Charles, nothing happened and Charles simplu moved on to the next hospital to continue his killing spree - until he didn't. Listen now to see how Charles's risky behaviour finally unravelled.Geordie then looks at a different kind of risky behaviour: people who jump into wild animal enclosures! There's the woman who wanted a selfie with a jaguar! The guy who wrestled a walrus! A group of teens who tormented a Siberian tiger! So why do people risk their lives by acting recklessly with wild animals or homemade hot air balloons or worse? Listen now to hear these stories and more...So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chat about Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser, Agony Aunt questions and more, only on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast.

For this episode we're joined by the admirable Simon Raymonde, sometime Cocteau Twin, head honcho at Bella Union Records and author of the autobiographical In One Ear. We commence by asking our guest about growing up as the son of the legendary Ivor Raymonde, string arranger on umpteen hits by pop idols from Billy Fury to the Walker Brothers. We hear clips from Ira Robbins' 1989 audio interview with Raymonde Sr.'s most famous client Dusty Springfield — and discuss a Ray Connolly piece from 1970 in which she more or less outs herself as gay. Simon then talks about his days behind the counter at Beggars Banquet Records and how they led to his joining the Cocteaus in 1984. Clips from a 1996 audio interview with the trio prompt his reflections on writing and performing with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser — and how their extraordinary music won the admiration of everyone from Prince to Jeff Buckley. Simon also recalls the fallout from leaving indie sanctuary 4AD for major-label Fontana. We conclude by asking our guest about the 27-year-old Bella Union label, home to Midlake, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, John Grant, Flaming Lips and Father John Misty… and to 17-year-old Nell Smith, who tragically died in a car accident three days before we recorded this episode. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces — Val Wilmer's 1966 interview with Sun Ra; Lester Bangs' rave review of the Temptations' Sky's the Limit — Jasper brings the episode to a close with his thoughts on early interviews with Alicia Keys (2001) and Amy Winehouse (2004). Many thanks to special guest Simon Raymonde. In One Ear: Cocteau Twins, Ivor and Me is published by Nine Eight Books and available now from all good bookshops. Visit the Bella Union Vinyl Shop at 25 Church St in Brighton and online at bellaunionvinylshop.com. Pieces discussed: Cocteau Twins, Cocteau Triplets, Cocteau Quadruplets, Dusty Springfield audio, Dusty Springfield: Dusty at 30... loneliness is an occasional thing, Sun Ra: Flying Saucers Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Ha!, The Temptations: Sky's the Limit, Alicia Keys: Move over Macy and Whine and Song; Amy Winehouse hits out at girl singers and why she's one of the very best.

In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy and another Ph.D. in computer engineering. As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for CERN and Philips Research Laboratories. Bernardo's 11th book, coming in 2024, is 'Analytic Idealism in a Nutshell: A straightforward summary of the 21st-century's only plausible metaphysics.' This is me listening to Bernardo and asking him questions so as to better understand the world as mind. To do this, we explored what it means to be human. Bernardo explained the work of Nietzsche, Frankl, Schopenhauer, and Jung to me as well as how a bourgeoise has sought to wrest control of our culture away from the church and ultimately leave us stranded, meaningless, and seeking solutions elsewhere. Bernardo taught me that we should not seek answers or solutions. These will never appear to us and we simply don't have the capability to understand what is going on. Instead, like the apple blossom in his garden, we should just be. We should listen to the noumena, the will inside us. We can describe it as duty, as calling, as fate, or as many other things. But ultimately, we are a violin and we should allow ourselves to be played by nature rather than seeking to force ourselves on the world. We should seek service instead of personal happiness. These ideas will stay with me for a while. At the end, I asked him to recommend a movie, a book, and a song. The movie he suggested was The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski. The song was Song to the Siren by Cocteau Twins vocalist Elizabeth Fraser. In which the Mister and I check out THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER (1954), which we caught on the TCM app but you can catch on Max and to buy/rent on Amazon Prime Video.  From director William Keighley and from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's stage play, the screenplay credit for the film goes to Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein.  The film follows Sheridan Whiteside (a MAGNIFICENT Monty Woolley), a very popular and revered critic who is making a quick stop with his assistant, Maggie (Bette Davis in a comedic turn), in a Midwestern town to have dinner with the Stanleys (Billie Burke and Grant Mitchell).  While entering the Stanley home, Monty slips on some ice and hurts his hip.  In a huff, he takes over the Stanley house and proceeds to terrorize the Stanley family (although later he eases up and even befriends the Stanley children, June and Richard, played by Elizabeth Fraser and Russell Arms).  However, when Bert Jefferson (Richard Travis) enters the picture and Maggie decides she's in love with him and willing to resign her employment with Sheridan, he goes on the offensive quickly with a crazy scheme to break up the 2 lovebirds.  Will love prevail?  Will Christmas be ruined?  You'll have to watch but we don't think the film disappoints and HIGHLY RECOMMEND.  The film clocks in at 1 h 52 m and is not rated on IMDB but think it's definitely a G for general audiences.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the pod is dedicated to my husband, father of my children, partner in crime and better half - happy happy on your special day my love! I love my life with you! The Veldt - "Aurora Borealis (feat. Elizabeth Fraser)," a 2023 single on 5BC Records Back in August, we shared a different track from soul-gaze siblings The Veldt, a duo formed in 1986 by identical twins Daniel and Danny Chavis. Like that previous Song of the Day, this one comes from their "lost" LP, which was recorded in 1989 with the Cocteau Twins‘ Robin Guthrie as producer, but ended up getting shelved when the band was dropped by their label. The track features guest vocals from Guthrie's bandmate, the iconic Elizabeth Fraser, singing back-up towards the end of the song. In a press statement, Danny Chavis shares, “This song was written in 1986 and was included in the first batch of songs we demoed under the name VELDT. Having heard Treasure by Cocteau Twins, this song was inspired by that very album and RUN DMC's Sucker MCs around the same time that year.” He continues, “This song is about my brother's love for his newborn daughter, written out of high school and dug out around the time the band had started to get noticed. We had written so many, but it was one of the newest pieces that we had begun experimenting. This would signal our departure from being a band that made people dance to a band that made people confused.”  As of last week, the album — titled Illuminated 1989 — is finally available on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digitally via Portland-based Little Cloud Records and 5BC Records. It was re-mastered by Guthrie earlier this year.  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Long afloat in shipless oceans": So begins Song To The Siren whose lyrics were inspired by Homer's Odyssey and the story of the Sirens who lured unwitting sailors to their deaths on the rocks. There is something so ancient and enchanting about the Siren that appeals to us. For the wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson listening to the song reinforced his belief that the eerie calls of seals at night were in fact the original siren voices whose sound and shape convinced sailors that they were being called by strange mer-creatures. His collaboration with poet Alec Finlay led to Chris recording two singers singing to each other across a bay in the North East of England "Here I am waiting to enfold you". Song To The Siren fills him with melancholy. The image of lives lost at sea is one that Meg Bignell strongly associates with the song and when a family friend drowned in the ocean surrounding her native Tasmania she was comforted by the version by This Mortal Coil and Elizabeth Fraser's haunting vocals. Larry Beckett regrets the song's association with death as he intended the lyrics to tell a more hopeful story about love. However Tim Buckley's death at 28 and the tragedy of his son Jeff's drowning in 1997 weigh Song To The Siren with a heavy sorrow that comforts those who have lost a loved one. Former Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti lost his childhood friend Rob in an accident when they were both 21. Rob introduced Anthony to the music of John Frusciante whose version of Song To The Siren astounded him when he first heard it. It has a profound effect on him and it speaks to him of fathers and sons communicating across time and space, when one has passed on as in the case of Tim and Jeff Buckley, and Anthony's friend Rob and his father, the man who inspired Anthony's career as a runner. When director Zack Snyder lost his daughter he stopped working on his Justice League film but when he completed it four years on he wanted to include Song To The Siren. Singer Rose Betts who recorded it for him explains how she immersed herself in the song to express the love, longing, grief and loss that it evokes. Musician and singer Dominic Stichbury sets out the musical elements that make this such a simple yet devastatingly powerful song. Producer: Maggie Ayre

Anna Calvi is a powerhouse. A virtuoso guitarist from a young age, it took her a while to gather confidence to get behind the mic; but when she did, the world took notice. In the last decade, Anna has released three acclaimed albums, she's toured Australia, and she's consistently pushed the boundaries, sonically and lyrically. I've had the pleasure of meeting Anna a couple of times before, and it's always a trip to hear her diminutive speaking voice when you know the power she has on stage and on record. It's like something transforms, when she's inside a song. Our most recent meeting happened with the help of technology; Anna joining me on Skype at her apartment in London, and me in Australia, while we all stay close to home. I gave her this theme not just because we're all in lockdown, but for that very switch I see flicked in her; when music has the power to bust us out, lift us up, and take us somewhere. From the heavenly sounds of Elizabeth Fraser, to the explosion of love from Perfume Genius, and the abandon of the Bad Seeds, this is a brilliant exploration of a wild heart.
