One of the most fascinating and thought-provoking books of our time is Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics (Verso) by Troy Vettese and Drew Pendergrass. The book asks the question: how could we actually have a future for Earth that is both green and socialist? The authors dive into the history of attempts to plan the economy, unearthing useful insights from neglected thinkers like Otto Neurath (developer of the very cool Isotype system). They combine utopian fiction and serious scientific analysis to offer a vision of what humans might be capable of if we put our know-how to work. It's very rare these days to have serious scientific thinkers trying to imagine the path to radical futures, so Pendergrass and Vettese have given us a wonderful gift that all leftists should debate and discuss. The book has an eclectic mix of influences, as the authors write:Half-Earth Socialism draws on ecology, energy studies, epidemiology, biogeography, Chilean cybernetics, history, eighteenth-century philosophy, Soviet mathematics, the socialist calculation debate, Hayekian epistemology, cutting-edge climate modelling, feminist sci-fi, and the forgotten tradition of utopian socialism.Vettese and Pendergrass have even designed a free computer game to go along with their book, in which YOU can attempt to plan the entire global economy, reducing emissions and the destruction of life while keeping the population happy. It's like SimCity but with the whole world, and instead of your task being to build a city it's to maintain a viable eco-socialist global government. GOOD LUCK!

All aboard! Or should it be all are bored. We kick off this episode with THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY WAR MEMORIAL for WWI in England. SNOOZE. From there it's onto PADDINGTON STATION also in London and the terminus for the first unground train. Then we move onto a real titan of engineering ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL who placed second in the list of 100 GREATEST BRITONS. A list that was highly controversial as there were no Black Britons no the list. So a campaign was initiated by Patrick Vernon to create a poll of the 100 Greatest Black Britons and on that list MARY SEACOLE was voted number one. She was what many consider the first nurse. She and FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE revolutionized patient care. FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE was into DATA VISUALIZATION and completely revolutionized the field of statistics, giving way to INFOGRAPHICS and ISOTYPES. Long story short, nurses have and will continue to change the world! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow WikiFreakz IG and Twitter @wikifreakzz ————————————————————————————————————- Follow Jill Weiner on IG and Twitter @jill_lives www.jilllives.com Venmo @jill-weiner-1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Connor Creagan on IG and Twitter @connorcreagan www.connorcreagan.info Venmo @connor-creagan

Jason Forrest, Director of Interactive Data Visualization, COVID Response Centre, McKinsey and Co, New York, gives the Department of Statistics Black History Month lecture, with a talk on the work of African-American scholar and activist W.E.B. Du Bois. At the 1900 Paris Exposition, an all African-American team lead by scholar and activist W.E.B. Du Bois sought to challenge and recontextualize the perception of African-Americans at the dawn of the 20th-century. In less than 5 months, his team conducted sociological research and hand-made more than 60 large data visualization posters for a massive European audience which ultimately awarded Du Bois a gold medal for his efforts. While relatively obscure until recently, the ramification of his landmark work remains challenging and especially important in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. Jason Forrest is a data visualization specialist, writer, and designer living in New York City. He is the director of interactive data visualization for McKinsey and Company's COVID Response Center. In addition to being on the board of directors of the Data Visualization Society, he is also the editor-in-chief of Nightingale: the journal of the Data Visualization Society. He writes about the intersection of culture and information design and is currently working on a book about Otto Neurath's Isotype methodology. In addition to this, Forrest is an electronic musician who has performed around the world including Glastonbury and Primavera Festivals

Tim Brennan, in conversation with Stephen Foster in 2009, talks about his exhibition English Anxieties, which combines original archival material of Mass Observation and the re-working of an account by British explorer and archaeologist T.C. Lethbridge of a concealed enemy presence in Cambridgeshire; by taking descriptions and drawings made by Lethbridge as a starting point, the work represents this data in the form of large, colourful maps inspired by the Isotype graphical system developed in the 1930s.
Phenotyping of cytokeratin (CK) 18-positive cells in bone marrow is gaining increasing importance for future prognostic screening of carcinoma patients. Urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPA-R) is one example of a potential aggressive marker for those cells. However, a valid and reliable double staining method is needed. Using monoclonal antibodies against uPA-R and CK18, we modified an immunogold/alkaline phosphatase double staining protocol. UPA-R/CK18-positive tumor cell controls exhibited black uPA-R staining in 15–80 of cases and red CK18 staining in almost 100 of tumor cells. Isotype- and cross-matched controls were completely negative. Bone marrow from healthy donors was always CK18-negative. Reproducibility of CK18-positive cell detection was estimated in a series of specimens from 61 gastric cancer patients comparatively stained with the single alkaline phosphatase-anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) and our double staining method (106 bone marrow cells/patient). In four cases, double staining could not reproduce CK18-positive cells. In 34 cases it revealed fewer or equal numbers, and in 23 cases more CK18-positive cells than the APAAP method. Overall quantitative analysis of detected cell numbers (838 in APAAP, range 1–280 in 106; double staining 808, range 0–253) demonstrated relative reproducibility of APAAP results by double staining of 97. Correlation of results between both methods was significant (p
