SB 727 Reaction with Susan Pendergrass and James Shuls

Susan Pendergrass and James Shuls join Zach Lawhorn to discuss the House passing SB 727, sending it to the governor's desk. The bill ended up being quite large. Here is some of what's in it. Charter schools could be coming to Boone County. If a group of teachers, parents, or citizens wants to open a charter school and has a solid application, it can now apply to a university or the state charter school board for sponsorship. The group does not need the approval of a local school board. Eligibility for the MO Scholars scholarship program for low-income students and students with disabilities has been greatly expanded. There are no longer geographic restrictions for who is eligible. The income limits for eligibility have been raised. The total amount of tax credits that can be dedicated to the program was increased from $50 million to $75 million. And the dollar amount of the scholarship was raised to bring the number in line with the Foundation Formula amounts for similar types of students. Districts in the state's largest communities must now put a potential switch to a four-day school week to a vote. There is also a financial incentive that will be remitted to any district that remains open five days per week. There is also an important change to the state's foundation formula. Previously, students were counted purely based on attendance. Now, the formula will be 50 percent based on attendance and 50 percent based on enrollment. The minimum teacher salary was raised from $25,000 to $40,000 for all teachers and from $33,000 to $46,000 for teachers with master's degrees. Districts will be able to attempt to fill teaching positions in “hard-to-staff” schools by placing teachers higher on the salary schedule than they normally would be. There are many more provisions to SB 727. It represents a defensible trade-off between increasing options for Missouri students who need them and investing in the system. Welcome to another episode of Stories Behind the Songs with Chris Blair! This week we are sitting down with Blake Pendergrass. From North Carolina, Blake has been in Nashville since 2013 with a very productive 10 years of experience built up. Blake talks about his first connections here in Nashville leading to him getting his first cut in town for Morgan Wallen... His breakthrough came with “865”, track 5 on Morgan Wallen's “Dangerous” album, which he co-wrote on Zoom during COVID with John Byron. You're gonna hear Blake talk about that song catching Morgan's attention which would lead him to a publishing deal and 8 more cuts for Morgan. Blake's writing style resonates with artists like Morgan Wallen, Dustin Lynch, Jake Owen, Chase Rice, and Chris Lane. You'll hear the stories behind several of his Morgan Wallen cuts, “Key West and Colorado”, a cut he has with Chase Rice, and an unreleased song called “One of the Ways”. Coming up on three years since his first publishing deal, Blake discusses the challenges of songwriting in a competitive industry and the dynamics between Nashville's community-oriented culture compared to LA's strategic approach. We had a great time sitting down with Blake Pendergrass this week and learned a ton about where the industry is going and changing. Give Blake a follow in the liner notes below to stay up to date! Today I'm honored to have back on the show: Whistleblower and authority of all things Maximus Inc, loving father fighting the CPS / Family Court system, independent researcher and journalist, podcaster, man of God, and one of my best friends: Jack Pendergrass! If you aren't familiar with Jack's research or story, it began when his rights and custody as a father were stripped away from him through the corrupt Family Court system. That was the biggest mistake the child-for-profit mafia that runs Family Court made because it set Jack on a journey to understand how his innocence could have been so grossly ignored and how to fight for his daughter who hasn't seen him in over a decade. And what the breadcrumbs of Jack's research led to was a massive and nefarious company that largely puppeteers almost all government divisions and agencies in the US and that has been mining our data and running the world's largest ‘legal' child trafficking ring in the US and abroad. This company is called Maximus Inc. Jack's research is extensive - spanning over a decade - and has brilliantly been able to piece together the history of child trafficking from biblical times leading up to the modern-day child trafficking systems we see today in satanic cults and secret societies, secret government-sponsored child slave programs such as MK ULTRA, and through ‘legal' entities such as the Family Court and CPS. His research goes above and beyond the realms of where he began, and he is one of the few researchers I put my stamp of approval on. In a world of weakened men who stay conveniently silent, Jack has risen to become a protector of women and children across the world and has been one the biggest supporters and advocates of my own work and this podcast. He even chose this podcast to be the first podcast he ever did - which will be something I always honor and cherish. And ever since - he's went on to do numerous other podcasts and his research just keeps expanding! Jack's tireless efforts and research have made him one of the top experts in the world on Maximus Inc and one of my favorite things about him is his desire to serve. He's not a survivor in the same way many are in this community, yet he is the first to stand up for any and all survivors, whistleblowers and parents like him that are fighting corruption in order to get justice. It is work like Jack's that educate us on who is pulling the strings - getting us one step closer to full exposure of all that is hidden in the dark. If you missed any of Jack's other episodes where he shares his personal testimony, the 101 of Maximus Inc, or his incredible break-down of corruption in the state of Tennessee - I'll have his playlist in the show notes for you all to go check-out. Definitely highly recommend listening to every podcast Jack does! On today's episode, we will be diving deeper into the rabbit hole of Maximus Inc including recent discoveries Jack has made tying child support to MK ULTRA and much more. Grab a pen and paper because we are all going to be learning a ton together today! One of the overlooked casualties of tropical storms and hurricanes is field research conducted by scientists at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS). Research on new varieties, plant treatments and other practices can be upended in a day by a violent storm. That happened to some of Christopher Vincent's research. The UF/IFAS assistant professor of environmental physiology saw some of his grove trials disrupted by Hurricane Ian last year. So, he decided to turn lemons into lemonade by shifting the focus of his research to study the after-effects of the hurricane and what mitigation efforts seem to help groves recover. Vincent joined the September All In For Citrus podcast to discuss this research and what he found in the aftermath of Ian. He said it can take as long as six months for citrus trees to fully decline after being impacted by a hurricane. Vincent noted his research will help growers establish benchmarks of what to expect during future storms. It also will add to existing knowledge on production practices that are most beneficial after tropical systems. Gillian Zeng Michalczyk, a UF/IFAS master's student who assisted on the project, joined Vincent in the podcast discussion. A grower-cooperator, Jake Pendergrass, also participated in the podcast to discuss how Hurricane Ian affected his groves and steps he took to rehabilitate them. On a positive note, Pendergrass spoke about his experience injecting citrus trees with oxytetracycline (OTC) for the first time this season. He treated about half his family's grove acreage. Pendergrass reported that treated trees look good and seem to be responding well to OTC. Meanwhile, those trees not treated with OTC continue to decline. That makes him believe OTC is having a positive benefit on HLB-infected citrus. Listen to the September episode of All In For Citrus. The podcast is a joint partnership between UF/IFAS and AgNet Media.

“Animal agriculture can be gone tomorrow. it's not foundational. That's why I find it very puzzling, the amount of pushback because it seems to be the actual… low hanging fruit. You write a book about socialism and no problem at all, people are like. “yeah, sure get rid of capitalism. No problem.” Get rid of animal agriculture, they get very mad.” -Drew Pendergrass   Drew is a PhD student in environmental engineering at Harvard. He is also the co-author with Troy Vettessee of  Half Earth Socialism A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics.   In order to save the planet while at the same time, make life better for all beings on the planet, Drew and Troy have come up with a plan, that includes:   Rewilding half the earth to absorb carbon emissions and restore biodiversity A rapid transition to renewable energy, paired with drastic cuts in consumption by the world's wealthiest Global veganism to cut down on energy and land use Worldwide socialist planning to efficiently and equitably manage production The involvement of everyone   The authors also collaborated with designers from the Jain Family Institute and Trust to create a video game based on the book, at play.half.earth. Emma hosts Drew Pendergrass, doctoral student in Environmental Engineering at Harvard University, and Troy Vettese, environmental historian at the European University Institute, to discuss their recent book Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future From Extinction, Climate Change, and Pandemics, on putting together a socialist model for a society that operates without economic markets and with respect for ecological theory, climate science, and urban and land-use planning. Drew and Troy begin by situating their work as an attempt to think through what socialism does, and can mean when attempting to tackle modern questions and social issues, with a particular focus on conservation. They then dive into the specific systems and infrastructures that would be necessary in such a society, from mass investment in public transportation, greater food choice to support a transition away from industrial husbandry, and a commitment to re-wilding and building up nature preserves from around 10-15% of land to around 50%, before looking at why socialism is necessary as the overarching system supporting this world. Next, Emma, Drew, and Troy look deeper at the history of conservation and the ideologies that drive it, first looking at their work as a critique building off of E.O. Wilson and completely changing our relationship to land-use as we try to undo our creation of a sixth mass extinction, before they jump back to the 1700s and the major schools of thought around our relationship to nature – including the influence of Hegel and the humanization of nature into utopia, and the Malthusian social Darwinism that sees “positive” checks (mass deaths) on population numbers as central to humanity's continued existence. They also touch on how the role of conservationism, particularly today, almost entirely serves the realm of philanthropy, as they dive into prevailing narratives and models around tackling the climate crisis we face, and how they often act contrary to the ecological crisis, looking at nuclear power and carbon capture technology specifically, before wrapping up by discussing their own perspectives on the issue, and the video game attached to their work that lets people practice building their own environmental models for the future, and see what worlds they could support. Emma also covers a Florida judge's overturning of the federal mask mandate on public transit and planes, Israel's continued air raids on Gaza at the height of Ramadan, and Ron DeSantis banning textbooks for discussing social-emotional learning. And in the Fun Half: Emma takes a call with Ken from Charleston as they unpack today's interview, before watching Eric Bolling take Ilhan Omar's suggestion of praying on an airplane as disrespect towards good Christians, and Fox's the Five dive behind who's really in charge of Biden, refusing to walk on eggshells as they daringly analyze the Easter Bunny's role at this weekend's White House Celebrations. She also touches on Alex Jones's clinging to Tucker Carlson as his walls of conspiracy crumble around him, Carter from NorCal discusses the importance of the collective element of collective bargaining, even when outside of a union, and a Swedish caller dives into this weekend's Quran book burning and the corruption of the Swedish police. Comrade Greeting Card discusses airline COVID policy, Matt and Emma dive into the Right Wing's inability to differentiate between investigative journalism discussing the possible identity of an anonymous harasser, and the revealing of all personal information (doxxing), plus, your calls and IMs!
