What does it take to go from waiting tables to writing chart-topping hits for country music's biggest stars? In this compelling conversation, songwriter Blake Pendergrass opens up about his remarkable year since his last appearance on the podcast – a year that's seen him secure 15 cuts on Morgan Wallen's latest album (including his first #1 hit), pen songs for Jelly Roll, Tucker Wetmore, and Post Malone, and have eight singles charting simultaneously on country radio.Behind these impressive statistics lies a deeply human story of perseverance through doubt. Pendergrass shares how after 13 years in Nashville with minimal success, his faith kept him going when logic suggested otherwise. The emotional high point comes when he discusses "The Dealer," a song he wrote entirely by himself during a period of uncertainty. "I wasn't really planning on writing a full song," he reveals, his voice breaking slightly. "I was in a season of feeling defeated... I sat down essentially to prove to myself I can still write songs." That vulnerable moment produced a powerful track that became one of his proudest accomplishments. The conversation delivers fascinating insights into the mechanics of modern country songwriting – from the collaborative process of creating Morgan Wallen's "Just In Case" with multiple established writers to pushing genre boundaries with Tucker Wetmore's "Brunette." Pendergrass explains how writing changes when working with artists at different career stages and how he approaches rooms with multiple strong creative voices. His perspective on balancing artistic exploration with commercial sensibility provides valuable wisdom for creators in any field.Whether you're an aspiring songwriter, a music industry professional, or simply a fan curious about how your favorite songs come together, this episode offers an authentic glimpse into both the craft and the heart behind today's biggest country hits. Listen now to experience the stories behind songs that are shaping the soundtrack of modern country music.
Blake Pendergrass is a songwriter originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. A graduate of Belmont University, Blake landed his first major label cut with “865” on Morgan Wallen's Dangerous. Since then, he has written several more songs for Wallen, including “Dying Man,” “Ain't That Some,” and “Just In Case” — which became his first #1 as a songwriter. He also has had cuts on albums by Chase Rice, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Chris Lane, Nate Smith and more. He is currently published by Back Blocks Music. In this episode, we talk about Blake's path from Raleigh to Nashville, how he keeps track of ideas, his first #1 hit, his songwriting process, and many other stops along the way.--------------------------------------------------This episode is also sponsored by The Graphic Guitar Guys. Susan Pendergrass and James Shuls join Zach Lawhorn to discuss the House passing SB 727, sending it to the governor's desk. The bill ended up being quite large. Here is some of what's in it. Charter schools could be coming to Boone County. If a group of teachers, parents, or citizens wants to open a charter school and has a solid application, it can now apply to a university or the state charter school board for sponsorship. The group does not need the approval of a local school board. Eligibility for the MO Scholars scholarship program for low-income students and students with disabilities has been greatly expanded. There are no longer geographic restrictions for who is eligible. The income limits for eligibility have been raised. The total amount of tax credits that can be dedicated to the program was increased from $50 million to $75 million. And the dollar amount of the scholarship was raised to bring the number in line with the Foundation Formula amounts for similar types of students. Districts in the state's largest communities must now put a potential switch to a four-day school week to a vote. There is also a financial incentive that will be remitted to any district that remains open five days per week. There is also an important change to the state's foundation formula. Previously, students were counted purely based on attendance. Now, the formula will be 50 percent based on attendance and 50 percent based on enrollment. The minimum teacher salary was raised from $25,000 to $40,000 for all teachers and from $33,000 to $46,000 for teachers with master's degrees. Districts will be able to attempt to fill teaching positions in “hard-to-staff” schools by placing teachers higher on the salary schedule than they normally would be. There are many more provisions to SB 727. It represents a defensible trade-off between increasing options for Missouri students who need them and investing in the system. Welcome to another episode of Stories Behind the Songs with Chris Blair! This week we are sitting down with Blake Pendergrass. From North Carolina, Blake has been in Nashville since 2013 with a very productive 10 years of experience built up. Blake talks about his first connections here in Nashville leading to him getting his first cut in town for Morgan Wallen... His breakthrough came with “865”, track 5 on Morgan Wallen's “Dangerous” album, which he co-wrote on Zoom during COVID with John Byron. You're gonna hear Blake talk about that song catching Morgan's attention which would lead him to a publishing deal and 8 more cuts for Morgan. Blake's writing style resonates with artists like Morgan Wallen, Dustin Lynch, Jake Owen, Chase Rice, and Chris Lane. You'll hear the stories behind several of his Morgan Wallen cuts, “Key West and Colorado”, a cut he has with Chase Rice, and an unreleased song called “One of the Ways”. Coming up on three years since his first publishing deal, Blake discusses the challenges of songwriting in a competitive industry and the dynamics between Nashville's community-oriented culture compared to LA's strategic approach. We had a great time sitting down with Blake Pendergrass this week and learned a ton about where the industry is going and changing. Give Blake a follow in the liner notes below to stay up to date! Today I'm honored to have back on the show: Whistleblower and authority of all things Maximus Inc, loving father fighting the CPS / Family Court system, independent researcher and journalist, podcaster, man of God, and one of my best friends: Jack Pendergrass! If you aren't familiar with Jack's research or story, it began when his rights and custody as a father were stripped away from him through the corrupt Family Court system. That was the biggest mistake the child-for-profit mafia that runs Family Court made because it set Jack on a journey to understand how his innocence could have been so grossly ignored and how to fight for his daughter who hasn't seen him in over a decade. And what the breadcrumbs of Jack's research led to was a massive and nefarious company that largely puppeteers almost all government divisions and agencies in the US and that has been mining our data and running the world's largest ‘legal' child trafficking ring in the US and abroad. This company is called Maximus Inc. Jack's research is extensive - spanning over a decade - and has brilliantly been able to piece together the history of child trafficking from biblical times leading up to the modern-day child trafficking systems we see today in satanic cults and secret societies, secret government-sponsored child slave programs such as MK ULTRA, and through ‘legal' entities such as the Family Court and CPS. His research goes above and beyond the realms of where he began, and he is one of the few researchers I put my stamp of approval on. In a world of weakened men who stay conveniently silent, Jack has risen to become a protector of women and children across the world and has been one the biggest supporters and advocates of my own work and this podcast. He even chose this podcast to be the first podcast he ever did - which will be something I always honor and cherish. And ever since - he's went on to do numerous other podcasts and his research just keeps expanding! Jack's tireless efforts and research have made him one of the top experts in the world on Maximus Inc and one of my favorite things about him is his desire to serve. He's not a survivor in the same way many are in this community, yet he is the first to stand up for any and all survivors, whistleblowers and parents like him that are fighting corruption in order to get justice. It is work like Jack's that educate us on who is pulling the strings - getting us one step closer to full exposure of all that is hidden in the dark. We're havin' a Christmas party this week on the Imbalanced History channel! Our guest is producer Jim Salamone, who's done so much more than run his Cambridge Studios. One of his great adventures involves working with, and later making a holiday album with, the late Teddy Pendergrass. Jim talks about his own amazing path as a musician, writer, studio innovator, producer, studio owner and more! He tells the boys how he came to meet and collaborate with Pendergrass, leading to the chance to work as producer of most of Teddy's long, lost holiday album, This Christmas (I'd Rather Have Love)! Long out of print, it has JUST been re-released digitally via music services, like Spotify! Kick your holiday spirit into gear, and listen here! Learn more about your ad choices.
