Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP You can also watch this episode over on my YouTube channel here! Well, guys, it's that time again; The Race Communique is back and, of course, we kick this one off by unpacking an absolutely huge edition of Milan San Remo! Three absolute titans of the sport (me, Southam, and Durbo) come together to talk about the first monument of the season. We got to witness, as Pipo Ganna called them ‘Gods of cycling' go toe to toe on the slopes of the Cipressa and the Poggio and, boy, did it exceed expectations. The confidence and arrogance of Pog trying to go from the foot of the Cipressa, the absolute ice man that is Van Der Poel responding to his every move, and Ganna showing what an absolute animal he is to hang tough with the big boys on the climbs. We talk all about it and, I'll tell you what, I honestly think that's the best edition I've ever seen.  Durbo's Pelo Chat takes a look at the ‘Superteams' of the sport - the guys with cash to burn like UAE or Visma who can pick up the best riders; money no object. But are the superteams good or bad for the sport, and is riding for one of them actually all it's cracked up to be? In this month's Talking Tactics, Southam fills us in on the upcoming UCI meeting to discuss whether additional wild cards should be issued for the biggest races. Now that some of the biggest riders, the likes of Pidcock, Hirschi, and Alaphilippe, have stepped down to ProTeam level, race organisers are stuck between a rock and a hard place if they want to keep the classic second division teams happy whilst also getting the fan favourites at their races. Plus, the UCI undermining all the hard work the lower ranked World Tour teams over the last few years to avoid relegation - it's absolute chaos.  Of course, we wrap things up with the Communi-quiz. Southam's quiz master this month, and he's bought out the race commentary clips for Durbo and I to guess the rider and the race. This is a real toughy, but you racing nuts out there will love it.  You guys know by now how much I love sitting down with Luke and Tom to yarn about the races. As always make sure you sit back, relax, crack open a cold one, and enjoy this month's Race Communique.  The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Rose Manley and Jo Rowsell cast their eye over one of the most hotly anticipated races of the year, Milano-Sanremo Donne. The last time the race was staged for women was 20 years ago, leaving plenty of intrigue over how it would be approached by this current crop of riders. This season's battle of SD Worx versus Demi Vollering was expected to continue into this race. The Dutch team boasted both World Champion Lotte Kopecky and super sprinter Lorena Wiebes in their line-up, making them the team to beat. However, former alumnus Vollering – now of FDJ Suez – got the better of them at Strade Bianche and looked to do it again on the famous climbs of the Cipressa and Poggio.  There were plenty of contenders for the inaugural Milano Sanremo Donne title elsewhere too. Trofeo Binda champion Elisa Balsamo heads up Lidl-Trek, Elisa Longo Borghini looks to make a big impression as Italian champion and Kasia Niewiadoma races for the first time since her Strade Bianche crash. Arrivée is The Cycling Podcast's quick-fire race analysis show offering a first take on the biggest races. With old grudges and new rivalries playing out on the gravel roads of Tuscany, Strade Bianche offered up plenty to talk about in this month's episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Rose Manley and Denny Gray are joined by cycling broadcaster Rebecca Charlton to discuss all the juicy details, plus they look ahead to the return of Milan-Sanremo with a mini-feature about the race's predecessor, the Primavera Rosa. Ever since Demi Vollering's move to FDJ-Suez and Anna Van der Breggen announced her return to the peloton last year, anticipation of a fierce rivalry between the pair has been rising. After Strade Bianche and their first meeting at Setmana Valenciana, it is fair to say that the match-up has already more than exceeded expectations. Van der Breggen has proven to be the only rider in the peloton capable of matching Vollering for power and tactical nous, although Vollering has thus far always come away with the spoils. Strade Bianche also saw former world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot take third place, in her first spring Classic since 2018. Plus the race was a welcome showcase for the top riders in the peloton after something of a stalemate at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad which saw a surprise victory for Lotte Claes.  In anticipation of the inaugural Milano-Sanremo Donne, we take a look back at the race's precursor – the Primavera Rosa – which ran for seven editions from 1999 until 2005. The race took place on the last 118 kilometres of the men's Milan-Sanremo, on the same day and included the same Poggio and Cipressa climbs and Via Roma finish. We offer up a potted history of those editions and hear some first-hand accounts from people that were there including Marion Clignet, podium finishers Chantal Beltman and Ina Teutenberg, 2005 champion Trixi Worrack and photographer Mario Prato. Also on the agenda, hippopotamus races, bumping into your ex with 30 toilet rolls and the battle of the names: Nienke Vinke vs Lotte Claes.

The Wine Thieves are back with part two of a series on the Unità Geografiche Aggiuntivi of Chianti Classico (or UGAs) the recently announced additional geographic units that will begin appearing on labels of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category as of this year.  Joining us again are Caterina Mori, Director of Communications for the Chianti Classico Consorzio, and the "Map Man" Alessandro Masnaghetti who literally drew up the map of the 11 new UGS that we'll be covering in deep detail in this episode. If you haven't already listened to part one, go back to the previous episode as it will be critical to your understanding of this instalment. Geology, and the soils derived from these underlying rocks formed an important basis for Masnaghetti's map-making work. To begin the episode, John and Sara provide a brief recap of Tuscan geology and terminology you'll encounter travelling through the 11 UGAs, along with what can be expected from the wines grown on each of the main "geological units", marine and continental, and the  specific soil types that fall under each.  Masgnaghetti discusses how the various soil types translate into to different organoleptic wine profiles in each UGA, from the macigno, pietraforte, albarese and Formazione di Sillano of the marine formations, to the continental units that include the gravelly-alluvial soils of San Casciano in the north and the lacustrine clay soils typical of the western part of the Castellina UGA. The UGA tour  proceeds clockwise, starting from San Casciano in the northwest corner of the Chianti Classico area,  continuing through Greve, Montefiorale, Lamole, Panzano, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Valgliagli, and finally San Donato in Poggio.Special thanks to our WineAlign colleague and Chianti Classico ambassador Michael Godel, who kindly chose a song to match the feel and vibe of each of the 11 UGAs for this episode. This episode is a part of a series dedicated to the Tuscan estates of Cuseri Family: Sette Ponti, Orma and Poggio al Lupo. Today Stevie is at the Tenuta Sette Ponti, in the Chianti area, between Arezzo and Florence. Here she meets Alberto and Amadeo Moretti Cuseri, Export and Communications Director and Director and Manager of the Italian Market respectively Together they discuss about the history of the winery the vineyards, and the wines: Oreno the signature wine, Crognolo their contemporary Sangiovese, Vigna dell'Impero a significant wine for the family and Sette a new wine that will be release soon. In the 1950s, the architect Alberto Moretti Cuseri acquired the first 55 hectares of land directly from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina di Savoia d'Aosta, daughters of Prince Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of Aosta. In the 1990s, his son Antonio Moretti Cuseri took control of the estate and began his project in the world of wine, which led him to release his first label in 1998. Thus began the history of Tenuta Sette Ponti, which with the release of the first vintage of Oreno in 1999 soon reached the top of the world's most important wine rankings. In 2018, together with Antonio Moretti Cuseri, his sons Amedeo and Alberto started to take over the estates. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe are back to discuss the racing in Spain and Belgium. At the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya – or should that be Volta Down Under – Australian riders took the opening three stages and in Belgium we saw the World Cycle Path Championships, otherwise known as the Minerva Classic Brugge-De Panne. Daniel asks the key question – would you prioritise watching the race that takes place amid the gently rolling hills and verdant beauty of Catalonia, or on the semi-urban Belgian coastline? That might not be the exact wording but it was certainly a loaded question. We also look back at Milan-Sanremo and Matej Mohorič's use of mountain bike tech – the dropper seat post – to help him tackle the descent of the Poggio.
