If you jump back a few episodes to episode 210 you'll hear us talk with James Stovall about his 206” buck that has stood as the Florida state record since 1999. That buck was harvested in Green Swamp west the first year it was open to the public as a special opportunity hunt. It's a great story and I encourage you, if you haven't already listened to it, to jump back and do so. All that being said just this last year James himself admitted he believed he was going to be dethroned. In 2023 Luke Asby was fortunate enough to harvest a 200” whitetail that put him in the 3 place spot only missing James by a small margin of 6” and the number 2 slot by just over 1”. This magnificent buck couldn't have fallen to a more deserving hunter and we are super excited to be the first ones to bring you the story in all its detail. A buck of 100 lifetimes and one I'm sure he won't soon forget and neither will we. You'll often hear it said there are no big deer in Florida and for the most part, comparatively speaking the majority of people aren't wrong. Deer in the South and especially in Florida definitely don't get the body mass you see on deer in the Northern states and the major factors are climate and resources. Take a short drive North and get into some more rural agriculture rich areas of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi and you'll start to see the size of deer gradually increase. Due to less nutrient dense soils, habitat loss due to over development resources are spread thin in the woods so it's not crazy for a hunter here in Florida to be astoundingly proud of a 120” Florida Giant. But every now and then one slips through cracks and turns into a monster. That's the case we're talking about this week. This week we are joined by James Stovall, the Current State record holder for the biggest whitetail ever killed in the state of Florida in recorded history. This 206” beast was taken in September of 1999 in Green Swamp West, the year it opened for a special opportunity hunt. It's quite a story and we know you'll enjoy it. In this episode, Ian and Nique are joined by https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesstovall/ (James Stovall), the co-founder and former CEO of Little Bird HR. James founded Little Bird in 2016 to provide software, employee benefits, and HR support to New York City charter schools. After five years of empowering charter schools in the city, Little Bird was bought in 2020 by one of the largest firms in the industry. Essential to James Stovall's decision to found Little Bird: a desire to leverage his experience working in the charter school sector to pursue his long-term dream of building a company that could address root problems he had observed in education. One crucial part of James' early story: witnessing his mother exemplify a remarkable spirit of grit and resiliency as she rejected welfare benefits available to a single mother like her and got a job as an insurance agent to build a better future for her children. Later, James discusses the importance of overcoming prevalent racial narratives that instill feelings of helplessness and undermine personal agency. James has done so by fixing his mind on the open doors in front of him, and not the closed doors — keeping a steady focus on his own goals and the opportunities within his reach rather than ruminating over the barriers that stand in his way. Tune into the full episode to hear more about James' story and his words of advice for “Darryl.” Note: If you would like to see all episodes of The Invisible Men, please go to: http://www.invisible.men/ (www.invisible.men)
