I'm back at it again this week with Ian and Vince, just a little opinionated friendly banter. A large portion of our conversation was centered around the opinionated question of “ What is fair chase?”. Now there's the textbook definition that boone and crockett uses to judge if a trophy was harvested within the boundaries necessary to make the record books and then there's the opinionated answers you'll find in this episode. Is duck hunting flooded fields fair chase? Is hiring a guide fair chase? Ultimately in my opinion as long as it's legal and fits the definition set forth by boone and crockett I personally believe it falls in the fair chase category. I guess the real question is, what is fair at all in life? There are few debates in the hunting world that will start a conversation faster than this one:If you could only own one rifle for the rest of your hunting career, what would it be?Would you choose a lightweight AR-15 hunting rifle that is easy to shoot, low recoil, and perfect for introducing new hunters, youth hunters, and recoil-sensitive shooters to the outdoors?Would you choose a .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, or 7mm-08 that can handle almost any whitetail deer hunt and still have the capability for bigger game?Or would you step up to something like a 7mm PRC or .300 Winchester Magnum and build the ultimate North American big game rifle?Today on the Under Pressure Outdoors Podcast, we're breaking down the ultimate hunting rifle debate. We're talking about AR-15 hunting rifles, deer rifles, elk rifles, the best all-around hunting calibers, and what it really takes to build a rifle that can handle everything from whitetail deer and hogs to elk, moose, and other big game.Because the truth is, there may not be one perfect hunting rifle for everyone. The best rifle depends on how you hunt, where you hunt, and what you're asking that rifle to do.So whether you're looking for your first hunting rifle, upgrading your deer rifle, or trying to choose the one rifle you would take anywhere in North America, this episode is for you.Let's get into it.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company- Use Code UPO10 to save 10%

This week we're talking about something that every turkey hunter, waterfowl hunter or any hunter carrying a shotgun into the woods should care about — making sure your shotgun is actually ready when it matters most.On this episode, we're joined by Ryan from Pattern Pros USA to talk about shotgun patterning, ammunition selection, and how hunters can take the guesswork out of choosing the right load for their firearm. From turkey loads and TSS to waterfowl ammunition, choke combinations, and understanding what your shotgun is really capable of, this conversation is all about improving confidence before you ever step into the field.Too often hunters spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on gear but never take the time to truly test the most important connection between them and the animal — the ammunition coming out of the barrel. Pattern Pros USA is helping hunters simplify that process by putting multiple loads and options in one place so they can find what works best for their setup.Whether you're chasing a spring gobbler, sitting in a duck blind, or just want to become a more prepared and ethical hunter, this episode is packed with information that can help you make better decisions and increase your odds of success.Pattern Pros HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/ Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

Today we're diving into a question that's guaranteed to start an argument around any hunting campfire: Could Daniel Boone survive as a modern hunter? We've tackled the opposite question before—could today's average hunter survive in the mountain man era? And while technology has made us more comfortable and, in many ways, more effective, it also made us wonder if we've become too dependent on it.So today we're flipping the script.Take away the legend, the folklore, and the coonskin cap, and look at Daniel Boone for what he really was: one of the greatest woodsmen to ever live. But would those skills still hold up today? Could a man who hunted with a flintlock and lived off the land adapt to trail cameras, GPS mapping apps, private property, hunting leases, and pages of hunting regulations? Or has hunting changed so much that even someone like Boone would have a steep learning curve?Throughout this episode, we're going to compare Boone's world to ours—looking at equipment, access to land, deer populations, regulations, and, most importantly, the skills that actually make a successful hunter. Along the way, we'll ask whether we've gained more than we've lost and whether there are lessons from a hunter who lived more than two centuries ago that still apply every time we step into the woods. So grab your coffee, settle into your stand, or turn the volume up on your drive, because this is going to be a fun one.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company- Use Code UPO10 to save 10%

The shows we record this time of year can tend to be some of my favorite and hopefully you guys enjoy them as well. We get to branch out from the usual and talk about all kinds of stuff but mostly we get to spend time reflecting on what we did right in the last hunting season, what we did wrong and how we might get a chance to do things a bit differently this year. In this episode I sat down with Jake and talked about the hammer of a gobbler he was fortunate to harvest this year for his first bird, not gonna lie I'm a bit jealous, and just share some fun stories from seasons past.HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/ Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

A little backstory on this week's guest, I met Connor a few weeks ago at the Ducks Unlimited banquet and wouldn't you know it, we had quite a bit in common. Connor runs the social media pages and youtube channel bass all year and we sat down and had a long conversation about well, almost everything but bass. We talked deer hunting all over the South East, duck hunting all over Florida and the US and did in the end talk a little bass fishing and of course the young man in the very beginning needs no introduction as he's a repeat guest whenever he's got a great story to tell so buckle up for my son Rhylan's recent story about a big ole red ear sunfish that is by far his personal best and he'll have a tough time beating it for sure. This week we're diving into a topic that every hunter, regardless of where they hunt or what they hunt, can appreciate. We're talking about the most influential pieces of hunting gear ever invented. Now, hunting has been around for thousands of years, and over that time there have been countless innovations that changed the game. Some made hunters more accurate. Some made them more efficient. Others completely transformed the way we locate, pursue, and manage wildlife. But if you had to make a list of the inventions that had the biggest impact on hunting history, what would make the cut? That's exactly what we're going to discuss today. We're going to rank seven pieces of hunting gear that changed the sport forever, from primitive weapons that fed entire civilizations to modern technology that's helping hunters gather more information than ever before. Along the way we'll talk about how each invention worked, why it mattered, and how it changed the hunting landscape for generations that followed.Whether you're a traditional bowhunter who appreciates the roots of the sport, a rifle hunter who loves the evolution of firearms, or somebody who can't imagine hunting without a GPS or a cell camera, there's going to be something in this episode for you.So grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let's take a journey through hunting history as we count down the most influential pieces of hunting gear ever invented.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company- Use Code UPO10 to save 10%

In November of 2004, deep in the forests of Sawyer County, Wisconsin, what should have been a routine opening weekend of deer season turned into one of the most shocking crimes in American hunting history. Six hunters were killed and two others were wounded during a confrontation in the woods near the tiny community of Meteor—an event that would later become known as the Wisconsin Tree Stand Murders. In this episode, we walk through the full story from start to finish: the early morning hunt, the confrontation over land and boundaries, the chaos that followed in the timber, the massive manhunt that crossed state lines, and the courtroom battle that ended with a life sentence. We also revisit the decades-long aftermath and the recent news of the killer's death in prison more than twenty years later, bringing renewed attention to a case that still echoes through the hunting community today. This is a story about deer camp tradition, conflict in the woods, and how quickly a normal day outdoors can turn into something unthinkable.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company- Use Code UPO10 to save 10%

This week we sat down with Hunter Barrett of Fortified Cotton Seed to break down one of the most talked-about shifts in modern whitetail management—moving away from traditional corn piles and high-cost protein feeds toward a more natural, cost-effective alternative.Hunter walks us through how cottonseed-based supplementation is being used by land managers and hunters across the South to support body condition, antler growth, and herd health without the drawbacks that often come with heavy corn feeding. We dig into when and how to use cottonseed, how it compares nutritionally to corn and pelleted protein, and what role it can realistically play in year-round deer management strategies.Whether you manage a small food plot or thousands of acres, this conversation challenges the way we think about supplemental feeding for whitetail deer and offers practical insight you can apply right away heading into the season.https://fortifiedcottonseed.com/DAYTONA 55 TICKETS!!!- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/event/daytona-55/#tribe-tickets__tickets-formHangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/ Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

This week we're talking about something every hunter loves to argue about… conservation organizations. Everybody's got stickers on their coolers, everybody's got a banquet they support, and everybody's convinced their organization is the one truly saving hunting. But if we strip away the branding, the raffles, the banquets, and the social media posts… where is the money actually going?Who's buying habitat?Who's restoring land?Who's improving public access? And which groups are really moving the needle for wildlife?Because at the end of the day, conservation shouldn't just be a slogan. If you're interested in wildlife, extinction, and the unknown corners of our planet, this is an episode you won't want to miss.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company-https://deeprootsrifleco.com/ Suppressor Webinar- https://deeprootsrifleco.com/product/bt-srbs-762-suppressor-webinar/?utm_source=Deep+Roots+Rifles&utm_campaign=5d28a8f4bf-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2026_01_14_02_20&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-5d28a8f4bf-658450774&mc_cid=5d28a8f4bf&mc_eid=86c1140098

If you're a hunter, conservationist, or just someone who loves the outdoors, you've probably heard about the incredible comeback of the whitetail deer—but do you really know how close we came to losing them?In the early 1900s, white-tailed deer populations had crashed to an estimated 300,000 animals nationwide due to unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Fast forward to today, and that number has rebounded to over 30 million deer across North America—one of the greatest wildlife conservation success stories ever recorded. But the story doesn't stop there. Are whitetail populations still growing, or are we starting to see regional declines? And how do different subspecies—from the Coues deer in the Southwest to the Osceola deer in Florida—fit into the bigger picture? In this episode, we break down the rise, fall, and modern state of the whitetail deer, explore the different subspecies across the continent, and talk about what it all means for hunters and conservation moving forward. This is the story of the American whitetail—then, now, and what comes next.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktrh.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company-https://deeprootsrifleco.com/ Suppressor Webinar- https://deeprootsrifleco.com/product/bt-srbs-762-suppressor-webinar/?utm_source=Deep

This week we're talking about one of the most impactful conservation groups in the turkey woods—Turkeys For Tomorrow. Founded by a group of passionate hunters and biologists, this organization is dedicated to ensuring the future of wild turkeys across North America. While turkey numbers have rebounded since their historic lows in the early 1900s, many regions are now seeing concerning declines—and that's where Turkeys For Tomorrow steps in. From funding cutting-edge research to improving habitat and supporting state agencies, they're working to answer the big question: what's really going on with our turkeys? In the not so distant past hearing a gobble in the spring wasn't really all that common. If you've been around here for awhile you know we love our local Ducks Unlimited chapter. The guys up there in with the Villages Chapter are hard at work raising funds to put back into DU to benefit ducks for the future of duck hunting. They host an awesome Youth hunt every season that has a huge turnout and lots of great prizes for the kids and every single kid walks away with some decoys and other awesome stuff. This time of year though, it's time for the banquet. Make sure you get tickets and I'll see you there on May 16th for an evening full of prizes, drinks and great food. Has hunting changed? I remember when an 8 point was an 8 point and inches didn't matter so much. Not to say that valuing bigger deer is a bad thing. Deer camp is a place best shared with friends. They tend to make the heavy drags seem shorter, the tough tracks a little easier and they give you plenty of hell for missing. Trapping might seem like a lost art and to many it is. As far as most of us are concerned trapping died out with the fur market but it might be making a comeback with a new goal in mind, predator management. The height of the fur trade coincided with some of the best bird hunting we've seen in decades and that was in part due to the fact that small predators like racoons were being trapped heavily for their fur and that kept them out of the nest. In today's modern hunting era the goal has shifted a bit and the quarry remains the same.HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

For most of the U.S. there's still at least a couple weeks before spring turkey season kicks off but down here in Florida is you're south of state road 70, the time is now, youth season has come and gone and regular season opens Saturday March 7th followed shortly after by the rest of the state and then the rest of the U.S. This week we're talking mostly about turkeys with Chuck Echenique. He's a passionate hunting advocate, owner of Rebel Yelp Outfitters and turkey guide down here in Florida. When I tell you it's dry down here in Florida. It's bad, it's so bad I saw a green tree frog with ashy elbows. We're in the worst drought in 25 years. Over 67% of Florida is in a drought. Those fires you see popping up though, they aren't necessarily bad. I know right now they aren't planned but because we do plan them and burn regularly we've been able to keep them relatively under control. So let's talk about the Florida ecosystem built on fire.

Hunting dogs hold a special place in my heart. There's something about seeing the fire in a working dog's eyes, the purest of passion, not just for the kill but for the hunt. Hunting dogs fill a niche role no matter their quarry and they do it with an unmatched passion and willingness to please their master. This week we're sitting down to talk about retrievers, and how Don Goode, owner of Labrador Outfitters got his start in the world of duck dogs.HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors

We've all had seasons that were more difficult than others. Sometimes work gets in the way and we don't get to spend as much time in the woods as we'd like. Other times it's the weather bringing in falls that feel more like mild summers, more rain than we can handle or even worse not enough rain when we've spent our hard earned days off planting food plots. The end of 2025 saw the first bear hunt in Florida in a decade. It was a long and arduous journey with plenty of opposition from the anti hunting community that still continues to this day. 2026 will see the introduction of hounds in the form of a training season and then in 2027 they'll get their real introduction when they're allowed to be used to pursue bears. This year saw baiting legalized on private lands and a successful harvest of 52 bears during the 22 day season. This week we are joined by Frank Richardson who was able to successfully harvest a bear and Donny Miley of Coast Runner Outfitters who helped make it happen.HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Dayton Archers Club- https://daytonaarchersinc.com/Mention UPO and get 10% off your membershipBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoors
