Shereen Pimentel was starring on Broadway before hitting her teen years. Where to go from there? Finish high school, attend the acclaimed Juilliard School and triumphantly return to Broadway as Maria in Ivo Van Hove's magnificent revival of the classic West Side Story, Jellylorum in the recent reinvention of Cats; The Jellicle Ball and working alongside Heather Headley in Encores' Into the Woods as Rapunzel and as Eva Peron in Evita at ART. Listen as Shereen and I chat about her experiences navigating Juilliard, as well as finding her artistic voice while playing iconic roles (stunningly) at the highest level, learning on the job from pillars of the American stage. It was a complete joy to reconnect with this extraordinary young woman who, even as a child,  always walked through the world with grace, humor, and fierce intelligence. I hope you enjoy the conversation even half as much as I did!

Rosalind gave us all the goods on “the summer of Chao” with her one-two fantasy punch on Netflix, the fervent (and divided) base of fans formerly known as “trekkies,” and her history-making turns in The Joy Luck Club and the live-action Mulan (but is the industry making any progress? Sigh.) Plus, Rosalind teases Pei-Pei's return in Freaky Friday 2, explains why it was important to embrace the trans community with her role on Gen Q, and gets to the bottom of her tucking her hair behind her ear in Just Like Heaven where Reese Witherspoon f*cks a ghost. Nigel Williams' artistic journey began at the age of nine, selling his watercolors to tourists on the island of St. Maarten where he grew up. With a passion for both art and music, Nigel pursued a degree in Music Education at Berklee College of Music in 1992. During his time at Berklee, his pastel work was showcased in an exhibition featuring musician-artists. Upon returning to St. Maarten in 1997, he studied under prominent local artist Ruby Bute, learning the importance of color in storytelling.Later, he ventured to Los Angeles to pursue his music career, collaborating with artists like Chris Brown and Heather Headley. For over ten years Nigel and his reggae band performed on stage at Kings Row Gastropub in Old Pasadena.Throughout his musical endeavors, Nigel continued painting, and the pandemic prompted him to focus more on his visual art. Drawing from his Caribbean upbringing and guided by artist Patti Mollica's teachings on acrylics, Nigel creates bold and vibrant pieces that capture the essence of paradise. Nigel's goal is to transport viewers to the beauty of St. Maarten, evoking memories for those who have visited and inspiring wanderlust for those who haven't.Instagram: nigelwilliamsartWebsite: nigelwilliamsart.com___________________Music CreditsIntroLike it Loud, Dyalla, YouTube Audio LibraryStingerScarlet Fire (Sting), Otis McDonald, YouTube Audio LibraryOutroIndecision, Dyalla, YouTube Audio Library__________________My SGV Podcast:www.mysgv.netinfo@sgvmasterkey.com

Mike Isaacson, Currently in his ninth season and only the third person to hold this position in The Muny's 103-year history. To date, he has produced 56 Muny shows, 23 of which had never been on the Muny stage before. He has collaborated at The Muny with many Tony award winners and breakthrough talents, including Christian Borle, Colin Donnell, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Gary Griffin, Heather Headley, Jennifer Holliday, Denis Jones, Laura Michelle Kelly, Dan Knecht- ges, Beth Leavel, Norm Lewis, Beth Malone, Kathleen Marshall, Patti Murin, Josh Rhodes, Emily Skinner and Ken Page. The Riverfront Times wrote, “Under the leadership of executive producer Mike Isaacson, the quality of Muny productions rose like the proverbial phoenix.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him “Theatre Artist of the Year,” noting that by “staging one impressive production after another, he made The Muny simultaneously hip and – be- lieve it – important to our community.” During Isaacson's tenure, The Muny has produced new developmental productions of Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn, Lerner and Loewe's Paint Your Wagon and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. During its record-breaking 100th season, The Muny became the first theatre in the world to produce the legendary Jerome Robbins' Broadway, doing unprecedented archival work on both the artistic and business side. During that same season, The Muny produced the U.S. regional premiere of Jersey Boys. Isaacson has changed the look and feel of a Muny production, overseeing a transformation in every aspect of pro- duction that culminated in 2019 with the arrival of the theatre's extraordinary James S. Mc- Donnell stage, a state-of-the art stage house that includes revolutionary LED technology, automated sets and a host of other innovations. During the summer of 2020, when The Muny was closed due to COVID-19, Mike produced and created The Muny 2020 Variety Hour Live!, an online show that reached more than a worldwide audience of over 400,000.   With Kristin Caskey, Isaacson has produced more than 23 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, off-Broadway and London productions. All told, his productions have received more than 122 Tony nominations and 34 Tony Awards. Last year, he produced the highly ac- claimed David Byrne's American Utopia, which made every major “Top 10” list, and became a highly acclaimed film by Spike Lee on HBO, for which he also served as an executive produc- er. Just as the COVID-19 shutdown of Broadway began, he was awaiting the first preview of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, starring Mathew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.   Also, during the shutdown, Isaacson served as a supporting producer of the acclaimed re- vival of The Unsinkable Molly Brown at New York's Transport Group. Other career highlights include: Fun Home (2015 Tony Award, Best Musical; 2018 Olivier nominee for Best Musical), Legally Blonde the Musical (2011 Olivier Award, Best Musical), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Tony Award, Best Musical), Red (2010 Tony Award, Best Play), The Humans (2016 Tony Award, Best Play), If/Then, starring Idina Menzel, Lanford Wilson's Burn This, starring Adam Driver and Kerri Russell (2019 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Play), Bring It On: The Musical (2013 Tony nomination for Best Musical), A Doll's House 2 (2017 Tony nomination for Best Play), You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical), The Seagull, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard, Caroline, or Change (Tony nomination for Best Musical); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (2001 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play) and Death of a Salesman (1999 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play). For the Independent Presenters Network, Isaacson served as producer for Spamalot (2005 Tony Award, Best Musical), Ragtime (revival) and The Color Purple (2006 Tony nomination for Best Musical).   He has received the St. Louis Arts and Education Council's Award for Excellence in the Arts and has been awarded The Broadway League's and Theatre Development Fund's Commercial Theater Institute “Robert Whitehead” Award for excellence in producing. He has served on the board of governors and executive committee of The Broadway League and received the Samuel J. L'Hommedieu Award. Growing up Black and Brown in a White Town

The Nasiona Podcast

What's it like growing up Black and brown in a predominantly white town? Joe Sparkman and Julián Esteban Torres López share their experiences of growing up together in the 1990s as teenagers in Nashua, New Hampshire. If you are a fan of the show The Office, you may know that Nashua is the location of one of Dunder Mifflin's branches—the very branch where Holly Flax was working out of before she got transferred to the Scranton branch.  Others may be familiar with Nashua as having been the place where JFK launched his presidential campaign at the steps of City Hall.Or, maybe you heard that Nashua was ranked both in 1987 and 1997 by Money magazine as the best place to live in the United States. Some of you may even know the obscure fact that Nashua was one of the only places in the country (if not the only place, period) where you could find triangular manhole covers covering most of the city's sewer connections. Others may remember the Good Will Hunting scene where Will tells Sean during his therapy session that he wants “to move up to Nashua, get a nice little spread, get some sheep and tend to them.” I remember being in Nashua watching this movie when it came out and everyone in the movie theatre just looked at each other and started laughing with pride, even though the movie was actually making fun of our city. For me, however, my favorite historical fact was that the Nashua Dodgers—a farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s—is believed to be the first professional baseball team based in the United States in the twentieth century to play with a racially integrated roster. The team was based at Holman Stadium in Nashua, New Hampshire, the very stadium that hosted my high school graduation ceremony in 1999. The very same stadium where Joe Sparkman and I used to play football together. Yet, despite Nashua having the history of hosting the first racially integrated U.S. team in modern baseball, the racism in Nashua in the 1990s was still very much alive when Joe Sparkman and I moved to the city to attend Jr. High School and Sr. High School together. So what it was it really like growing up as Black and brown in New Hampshire in the 1990s in a predominantly white state and a city that saw itself as racially progressive? That's what this episode unpacks. And to dig in, I invited one of my oldest and closest friends, Joe Sparkman, to join me for the conversation. Joe Sparkman is an inspiration to others and has been one of the reasons why The Nasiona flourished in the first place. Back in the mid-1990s, when Joe and I were classmates in 8th grade together, Joe gave me my first social justice awakening. In this episode, along with forthcoming episodes, I want to humanize The Nasiona by introducing you to the behind the scenes conversations we have with each other here, and to the people who have made The Nasiona possible.  Joe Sparkman joined the team last year to become our podcast's music producer, and this year he is helping us to officially make our transition into becoming a non-profit organization. In light of this, I wanted to re-introduce you to one of The Nasiona's visionaries. Joe Sparkman decided to follow his dreams in music after he got his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. He started working with Ne-Yo and went on to produce several prominent artists, such as Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Joe, Snoop, Christina Milian, Heather Headley, Emeli Sande, Nicole Scherzinger, Missy Elliot, Prince Royce, among others. He won several awards: Grammy, ASCAP Award, multiple Platinum and Gold plaques, and an African Music Award. After his music career, he continued to dream big and co-founded a million-dollar medical and pharmaceutical company (Medsav). He's currently an advisor to the board at Roche and The Adira Foundation,, a district activist leader for the National MS Society, a member of the Government Relations Advisory Committee, and during the 2020 elections the Georgia Democrats delegated Joe as a precinct chairman. As The Nasiona Podcast‘s music producer, Joe returned to his musical roots, and now he's taking on a bigger leadership role as we take The Nasiona into the next phase so we can more effectively center, elevate, and amplify the personal stories of those Othered by dominant cultures and systems of oppression. Given that Joe and I have a friendship nearing three decades, I thought it'd be worthwhile to give you a glimpse into the kinds of situations that give rise to activists and social justice warriors like myself and Joe. Joe Sparkman and I spoke in July of 2020. This is the 1st part or our 3-part conversation.   The Nasiona Podcast amplifies the voices and experiences of the marginalized, undervalued, overlooked, silenced, and forgotten, as well as gives you a glimpse into Othered worlds. We focus on stories that explore the spectrum of human experiences—stories based on facts, truth-seeking, human concerns, real events, and real people, with a personal touch. From liminal lives to the marginalized, and everything in between, we believe that the subjective can offer its own reality and reveal truths some facts can't discover. Hosted, edited, and produced by Julián Esteban Torres López.  Please follow The Nasiona on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for regular updates: @TheNasiona Original music for The Nasiona Podcast was produced by the Grammy Award-winning team of Joe Sparkman and Marcus Allen, aka The Heavyweights.
