Imagine growing up in a spectacular mansion, with access to the kind of wealth and connections most of us can only dream of. But although you're surrounded by material riches, you're in a social vacuum—eating alone in your bedroom every night, wandering the grounds of your family estate with only the wildlife as company. This was the life of John Du Pont, the youngest heir to the famously wealthy family who founded the DuPont chemical company. He grew up cut off from the kind of social warmth most of us take for granted. His solution to that was to immerse himself in the sport of Olympic style wrestling—and to gather some of the world's greatest athletes in a little utopian community he named Foxcatcher Farms. His dream was to create the best team of wrestlers in the world. They lived on the property, trained on the property, became like family to each other…all under the watchful eye of their wealthy benefactor, John. To the athletes, it sounded like a dream come true. But they didn't realize that John DuPont was already on a paranoid downward spiral that would leave everything he'd built in ruins—and take the life of one of wrestling's most beloved champions.Sources:Time Magazine, 1996: "Blood on the Mat" by John Greenwald: https://time.com/3586290/blood-on-the-mat/Documentary "Team Foxcatcher," 2016. We look at John DuPont's development of Team Foxcatcher and the power imbalance that existed between him and the athletes. We also discussed his strange behaviour and this was not new. Also how he was able to get away with things because he had a good relationship with the police We debate if it was o.k to leave his money to one of the wrestlers or if it should have been left with family. Murder, My Dude returns with another super-sized helping of true crime goodness to help make your quarantine downtime a little more fun. John DuPont was social distancing before it was cool (ok, that's enough Covid references). The eccentric multi-millionaire lived a childhood full of loneliness before devoting much of his adulthood to sport. By the mid 1980s, wrestling had drawn DuPont's interest and he started his own elite club with some of the best America - and later, the world - could offer. When John's mental state started to weaken, however, the consequences turned deadly. And somehow, this story led us to a lengthy discussion of the Wendy's Superbar. You'll have to listen to find out how. Elsewhere on the show, This Week In Murder explores a new development on a case from the beginning of the century and a horrible hate crime at a Sam's Club in Texas. At the end, we finish with an edition of Who Died The Worst that only a Tiger King could love. Like what we're doing? Subscribe and tell a friend! Hello Film Fans, I just saw Foxcatcher, a 2014 sports drama centering around the freestyle wrestling champs Mark And Dave Schultz and their tumultuous relationship with their socially awkward coach, John Dupont, played in a brilliant and haunting fashion by Steve Carell. As a story, Foxcatcher is a drama centering around family, mentorship, as well as the dangers of idol worship and how it can essentially damage a person to the point where they are left to wallow in the shadow of the person they look up. I wish to explore and discuss these very concepts as a way of further enticing those listening into seeing what is a break from the standard family sports drama. I hope you all enjoy this episode of the [odcast, and as a wise man once said, "I'll see you at the movies." Ten years ago, 58-year-old Barbara Blount disappeared from her rural Holden, Louisiana home. Authorities found pots and pans stacked on her kitchen floor, part of a spring house cleaning. More ominously, they also found her car abandoned in the woods on a nearby gravel road.Kristi Bryant interviews John Dupont, a reporter at Livingston Parish News. Dupont has investigated the case and recently published an article about the search for Barbara Blount 10 years after her disappearance. Blount was last heard from at 11:30 a.m. on May 2, 2008, when a neighbor spoke to her via telephone at her residence on State Highway 1036 in rural Livingston Parish. Blount told her neighbor that she was cleaning out her kitchen cabinets. She has never been heard from again. When her nephew checked her house, the front door was wide open and Blount's phone was lying on the floor with the battery pulled out. Her silver four-door 2006 Toyota Camry was found parked about a quarter of a mile from her home at 4:15 p.m. the day of her disappearance. It was parked on a dirt logging road, 25 or 30 yards off the main road and out of sight, hidden by trees.Blount was a widow and lived alone at the time of her disappearance, but she kept in regular touch with her relatives and her disappearance was out of character. Her two children lived on the same road as she did, and she still cooked dinner for them every day. She also regularly drove her sister to medical appointments. She lived quietly and was active in her local Baptist church. Blount is described as a cautious individual who didn't open her door to strangers and carried a gun when she went outside to milk the cows. Her credit cards haven't been used since she went missing. Investigators believe she was taken against her will. Foul play is suspected in Blount's disappearance. For everything Southern Gone visit our website www.SouthernGone.com. Join host, Greg Carlwood, of The Higherside Chats as he talks satanic ritual abuse, entity invocation and the power of consciousness with guest, Jay Parker. While may of us are familiar with the dark and nefarious deeds of elite occultists, most of these accounts of satanic rituals involving rape, sacrifice, and mind-control come from second-hand sources, making them vague and hard to verify. Today's guest, Jay Parker is a multi-generational Satanist, who spent the first seven years of his life, deeply entrenched in The Church of The Marquis of Hell. Forced to withstand a plethora of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of his parents and other cult members, Jay joins The Higherside to expunge past atrocities and shed light onto elite occult families, their systemic abuse, and his uphill struggle to re-program his subconscious mind. 3:30 As a man who has lived through some of life's greatest traumas, and come out the other side, Jay begins by describing his frightening and horrific childhood. Born into a multi-generational, Satanic family, with elite parents whose powerful occult knowledge and ability included mind control, rape and killing, Parker details his ancestral connection to Satanism stretching back on his mother's side 3,000 years to the Amalekite people of the Old Testament. 10:00 Providing some background for the circumstances he grew up under, Parker details the rich history surrounding his family's roots and the pre-Atlantean connection to his family's beliefs. He also touches on the true nature of Atlantis- it wasn't a Utopian paradise, but rather a fascist state where it's citizens were mind control victims. Greg and Parker discuss the magical implications behind conducting such nefarious rituals, the morphic field, satanic ritual abuse and their effects on epigenetics. 23:00 Parker continues describing the destruction of consciousness he experienced as a child. With every child in a "programmable state" during their earliest years of life, bombarding them with Satanic acts ideology, and imagery breaks down the subconscious. Greg and Parker also discuss the pre-Atlantean dark pact made by multi-generational elite families and entities. 35:00 An integral piece of Parker's presentations is his descriptions of elite pedophile villages, such as Arden, Delaware and Rose Valley, Pennsylvania, where perverse practices were par for the course among residents and these communities were established specifically for these nefarious purposes. Greg and Jay discuss some of the horrifying details about the rituals and torture he endured, including electroshock to the base of the spine, drugs, rape, murder and imprisonment. 45:42 After detailing several Satanic rituals he experienced, Jay and Greg pivot to discussing the occult influence in towns throughout the country, an interesting statue of Quaker William Penn, and the current state of Jay's family lineage. After his mother’s death in 1988, John duPont threw himself into sports. He built a training facility he called Foxcatcher Farms and opened it to athletes. John DuPont became a murderer in 1996. But before that, he was a boy desperate to belong. Ignored by his parents and unable to excel at his favorite thing, sports, John was a sad kid. Mark Schultz is an Olympic gold medalist, a pioneer in MMA fighting and the subject of the book and film Foxcatcher. His brother, Dave Schultz, was one of the greatest Olympic wrestlers of all time and was murdered in the prime of his life by the billionaire madman John DuPont. Mark's story is recounted in the book Foxcatcher, which was made into an Academy Award-nominated film in 2014 starring Steve Carrell as John DuPont, Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz and Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz. Mark is a bright, disciplined and confident guy. He rose to the top of his profession, had his life shattered to pieces, and rebuilt it brick by brick with a level of determination and will that few of us will ever know. He is not the usual kind of guest we have on the program, but his life demonstrates the concept of what the show is about in its own unique way. Mark's story is one of turning tragedy into triumph, of transforming unimaginable loss into a life of meaning and self-respect. And in that respect, his life is a model for us all.
The true story of eccentric millionaire John DuPont's relationship with wrestler Mark Schultz and his brother Dave is the subject of this slow-paced, contemplative drama. Steve Carell is soaking up the spotlight for his chameleon-like transformation into DuPont, but the acting is first-class all around. The tragedy at the heart of 'Foxcatcher' is full of dimension and the filmmakers do succeed in fleshing out the characters and their differences, but ultimately director Bennett Miller has crafted an unengaging film. Andrew nails it on the weighty themes at play in this story and Phil laments that a more emotionally involving film could have been made from this substantial real-life material. The two film critics give 'Foxcatcher' it's due, as it was a highly anticipated film for them both.
