In 2011, Bennett Miller somehow made us care about baseball when he turned a book about the Oakland A's and a couple of sabermetricians into a feature-length drama featuring Brad Pitt, his bff Jonah Hill, and the great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Sabermetricians? You're goddamn right! I vocabulary like a mug. This flick struggled in production but Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian both brought on as pinch hitters to finish what would become a film adorned in accolades and box office earnings. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate what losing sounds like and how much money a legacy is worth as we see if this one stole home or hit a grand slam.

Data is going to help you up your marketing game. We're showing you how.Right off the bat, “data analysis” probably doesn't stir the soul. But it's how you tune into your target audience so you can tailor your campaigns to them. Your messages will be more relevant, you'll boost engagement, and not only convert leads but create lasting customer relationships. In other words, it's by leveraging data that you graduate from bush league to pro. And what better way to show the benefits of leveraging data than talking about how sabermetrics shaped the world of baseball. So In this episode, we're talking about the Academy Award-winning movie, Moneyball, with the help of special guest, Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1, Tim Hillison. Together, we chat about tuning into your marketing data, doing market research to understand your ICP, and tying statistics to human stories. So batter up for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Tim HillisonTim Hillison is the Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1, a growth advisory consultancy for B2B SaaS & Technology startups and scaleups.  He has 25 years of global marketing experience, has led marketing three times on two continents, and has worked for some of the world's most recognized brands, including Visa, Microsoft, and PayPal. Tim's expertise spans Fortune 500 enterprises and fast-moving venture-funded technology startups from series A - E. About Entry Point 1Entry Point 1 connects marketing strategy to business outcomes across the customer journey. Helping it's customers build launch, and run efficient marketing programs that transform their organizations and financial results.  About MoneyballMoneyball is based on a true story about the general manager of the Oakland Athletics trying to assemble a competitive baseball team on a tight budget. This comes after the A's loss to the Yankees the previous year, in 2001, and as they're losing their star players. So the GM, Billy Beane, teams up with player analyst and Yale economics grad, Peter Brand, and together they use sabermetrics to evaluate and sign undervalued players.Sabermetrics are statistics of in-game activity, including batting, pitching and fielding. The term comes from the acronym SABR, for the Society for American Baseball Research. It's a way to look objectively at player performance. In other words, Peter Brand says it's a way to “find value in players that nobody else can see. People are overlooked for a variety of biased reasons and perceived flaws. Age, appearance, and personality.”So the movie is about challenging a traditional value system, where big city teams that have money can afford better players whereas small market teams have to be more strategic about who they sign. The movie came out in 2011 and is based on a book by author Michael Lewis called Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. It stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane and Jonah Hill as Peter Brand. It was directed by Bennett Miller and the screenplay is by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Moneyball:Tune into your marketing data. It will tell you objectively what strategies are most effective. Use that information to dial in your content. You'll uncover new and overlooked ways of marketing that you wouldn't have used otherwise. Ian says that It's like in Moneyball, when “Billy Bean realizes that you can get a player who can't run, can't catch and can't steal bases; They can only hit home runs, but that's super valuable. And while everyone else sees them as a bad player, you see them as a gem. So what are your marketing versions of that? Is it a channel? Is it a budget item? Is it a way to create something that is consistent and repeatable that won't be perfect, but it will be consistent?”Do market research to understand your ICP. That is, your Ideal Customer Profile. This is how you know your product is meeting an actual need, not a perceived one. Tim says, “You have to do market research for this, to understand where your customers are and where to meet them and what different channels work better for those companies. If you don't spend the time aligning your revenue team to understand that at the beginning, and you just rush right into the tactics, that's where you miss the mark.”  Tie statistics to human stories. Along with the stats you use to prove value to your audience, tell customer success stories. Because it's those human stories that will seal the deal with your audience. Ian says, “Stats are pretty boring, but stats give you a story that is extremely compelling in which there are human beings at the end of the statistic.” It's another way to humanize your brand, by sharing stories instead of just numbers.Quotes*”[The A's] lose like 14 games before winning 20 games in a row, which beats the record. This is what B2B marketing is about because there are lead and lag times in marketing. Marketing is not something where you do it and instantly it happens. ” - Tim Hillison*”In your marketing, you need to find those customer stories where it went above and beyond, where they tell their family and friends about it, where it changed someone's career.” - Ian Faison*”People buy from others like them. And also we know that B2B buyers are not passive. They're out there scouring the internet to research your brand before sales even calls you. And so those that are authentic and have a strategy, meaning that they're talking with a consistent brand voice using the same story and relevant messaging, and they understand their ICP's frustrations and pain points, that is where you build future relationships.” - Tim Hillison*”Helping people get to the next level. That's what they want. How is your software or how is your product going to help people achieve their goals? It's that level of authenticity people want to help them get there.” - Tim Hillison*”Sometimes you try something new and it doesn't work out at first. Then you have to tweak it before it starts getting better and better and better, and then you're on a roll as a team. That energy is electric, and all it does is bring you together as a team. It's an amazing wave of emotion that's created in the film, too.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Tim Hillison, Founder & CMO of Entry Point 1[2:01] Why are we talking about Moneyball?[3:26] What does Tim's work at Entry Point 1 entail?[3:48] What is Moneyball about?[11:39] What makes Moneyball remarkable?[17:53] What marketing lessons can we take from Moneyball?[42:43] What's Tim's content strategy?[46:58] How does Tim prove the ROI of content?[49:22] What are some of Tim's favorite pieces of content or campaigns?[51:16] What advice would Tim give to marketers today?LinksWatch MoneyballConnect with Tim on LinkedInLearn more about Entry Point 1About Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company.

Bennett Miller was the 3rd director attached to the adaptation of Michael Lewis' classic baseball non-fiction book 'Moneyball', after Steven Soderbergh was replaced by Sony, who got nervous over his plan for interspersing interviews with real-life characters from the book like Lenny Dykstra and Darryl Strawberry throughout the film. His rewrite of Steve Zaillian's script made the studio nervous when paired with the $50 million dollar budget. Some of that technique remains in Miller's use of real baseball scouts and former players in the film, but it's blended seamlessly with the fantastic performances by Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill (who replaced Dmitri Martin in the role of Paul Brand/Paul DePodesta), Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Chris Pratt. Pitt and Sony exec Amy Pascal and producer Mike DeLuca stuck with the project, reduced the budget, and luckily, the film got made.  On the face of it, it's an audacious undertaking: no less than an art-house take on baseball. Or is it a crowd-pleasing writer's film with a decidedly 70's bent?  Or is it a treatise on the limitations of collective conventional wisdom?  It's all these things and more.  Some Articles About 'Moneyball': https://www.looper.com/593376/the-untold-truth-of-moneyball/  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/making-moneyball-272655/ Roundtable with Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Bennett Miller:  https://youtu.be/r9g2Bk2GQYY?t=199 84th Academy Awards Nominees and Winners.

We touch on romance versus data, the fractious appeal(?) of Billy Beane, how Miller replaced Soderbergh in this case of life imitating art, 2010s' signature “slick cinema” and baseball's televisuality, where are the women, decent single dads, and the difference between a big win and a dodged loss. In 2005, Dan Futterman wrote the screenplay that was directed by Bennett Miller and Philip Seymour Hoffman breathed life into Truman Capote 1924-1984. The film observes the time that Truman, Capote and Nelle Harper Lee played by Catherine Keener; are researching the Klutter killings in Kansas. Truman Capote forms a relationship with the killers but waits until they're dead to finish as well as publish his novel In Cold Blood which was the first of its kind; a true crime novel. It was turned into a film in 1967 but this film released in 2005 shows the idiosyncrasies as well as the guilt that Truman Capote felt from forming relationships with these killers that led to his novel. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/support

It's hard not to be romantic about baseball. Just like it's hard not to be romantic about this movie. I feel like I say this a lot at the front of my podcasts, but hot damn, this is one of the greatest baseball movies – no, one of THE greatest movies ever made. This is one of those movies that just kind of snuck up out of nowhere and took all that watched it by complete surprise. Moneyball was nominated for best picture in 2012, and normally I wouldn't mention that, but this was in a small window of time post-LOTR where the nominations actually meant something and moviegoers actually knew what the movies were. (As a reference point, The King's Speech won the year before and it was up against the likes of 127 Hours, The Social Network, and Toy Story 3.) We'll see what our guest says today, but I don't really see this as a sports movie. It's instead a highly compelling thinking-man's drama. Or, taken even further, it's a business and money movie. But the title does sum up exactly what it is. It's about the dollar bills generated by MLB and how the finance side of it works. But it's also about taking chances and putting your neck on the line for something you believe in.  Brad Pitt's performance is nothing less than masterful, and to see a reigned in Jonah Hill is quite refreshing, yet he still shines as the comedic relief. This movie rests very easily in my top ten films of all time. Others may shift and come and go, but this one has a permanent spot. If you haven't seen 2011' Moneyball, get your ass into gear and treat yourself to one of the greatest dramas of your life.  Moneyball stars Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Robin Wright. Finally, a movie where I can pronounce all the names! It's based off the book by Michael Lewis, and written for the screen by Steven Zallian, Aaron Sorkin, and Stan Chervin. It's directed by Bennett Miller. On Rotten Tomatoes, Moneyball holds a 94% critics score, and an 86% audience score – one of the few times ever I find myself siding with the critics, yet I'm baffled why this isn't at least 98% on both fields.  Today I have with me an old, old, old friend of mine – and I don't mean age, because he's the same age as me, as we went to junior high and high school together – Brett Moore. Brett, it's been over 20 years since we've spoken or even seen each other in person, so I'm looking forward to catching up with you and swapping some memories as we discuss this flawless film. Share with us who you are, what you do for a living, and for fun. Questions About the Movie: The solution that Billy Beane implements seems so obvious in hindsight. Didn't anyone else see the importance of getting players on base before this was put into practice in 2002?  This movie is incredible in that it makes work meetings interesting. Beyond that, the whole movie feels unscripted and very real. Is that because of the writing by Aaron Sorkin, do you think, or because of the performances, particularly Brad Pitt's?  This isn't a sports movie - it's a business and economics movie. Are there any business movies that are as entertaining or well done?  Bill James is mentioned frequently in the movie as well as in the book. The movie says he was a security guard for a pork and beans factory. Can you tell us more about this man and how he really was the impetus of changing the game.  Questions for Application Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) says, "There is an epidemic failure within the game to understand what is really happening. And this leads people who run Major League Baseball teams to misjudge their players and mismanage their teams." What other institutions would you say have this same problem?  Billy was deeply haunted by his past. Is this what caused Billy to want the hard truth from Peter when he asked if he would have picked him for the draft? How can hearing the hard truth about ourselves really help us in the long run?  Is there anything you put your whole being into and failed? How did you come back from it? What's the best baseball stadium you've been to?  Follow Life Through the Big Screen on these following pages:InstagramFacebookTwitterThis episode was sponsored by Spur Creative
