Many residents of the Highlands have embraced the "death-positive" movement, which hopes to shape the endings of our stories. When a doctor told Lisette Cheresson's family that their mother was no longer eligible for a liver transplant, they decided to take her home immediately. "The doctor was flabbergasted," says Cheresson, a Beacon resident whose mother died in 2018 in North Carolina. "He said: 'Are you sure? We can keep her alive.' " "We had to honor what we promised her," she recalls. "Mom didn't want to die in a hospital." They hired a private ambulance to take her home that evening. Family members were at her bedside when she died the next morning. "It was one of the most profoundly beautiful moments of my life," says Cheresson. "It is transcendent when people are given an opportunity to experience these sacred intimate moments in ways that are meaningful to them." As part of a growing movement that has been described as "death positive," people in the Highlands and around the country are looking for ways to embrace life's final moments and turn death into something beautiful and meaningful. The movement is driven by death doulas, podcasters, hospices, writers, singers, funeral directors and "death café" facilitators. In part motivated by her experience with her mother, Cheresson joined an army of doulas, also known as death midwives, who help families talk openly about dying and individuals achieve a "good death." Hudson Valley Hospice, which serves Dutchess and Ulster counties, has trained about 80 end-of-life doulas since 2017, said Lisa Wilson, a spokesperson. Wilson said the doulas help plan and manage the final days of patients' lives to ensure they have a good death, including the friends, music and even smells they want present in their final moments. "They talk with them about how they want the end to go," she says. Doulas also help with legacy projects such as farewell videos and letters. She says a doula helped a Fishkill woman in her 90s assemble a board of photographs to be displayed at her wake. Words and music Talking about death is the idea behind the death café that Ryan Biracree began last summer at the Desmond-Fish Public Library in Garrison, where he works as the digital services librarian. "Discuss death, dying and the dead - with tea and cake," read his promotion for a session held Feb. 25. (The next one is March 17.) Since 2011, there have been more than 17,600 such gatherings worldwide, according to deathcafe.com, a site created by Jon Underwood in London after he was inspired by "café mortals" held at bistros in Geneva by a Swiss sociologist, Bernard Crettaz. When Underwood died suddenly in 2017 at age 44, his mother and sister took over. (Underwood also founded a consumer site for people to review funeral directors.) The first death café in the U.S. took place in Columbus, Ohio, in 2012. "Death cafés allow people space to talk about things without getting weird looks from family and friends," says Biracree. The sessions typically draw 20 to 30 people. Rather than talking, singing to the dying is the idea behind the Threshold Choir, co-founded 10 years ago by Cat Guthrie, a Garrison singer-songwriter. The choir visits the bedsides of the sick and dying to perform a repertoire that might include "We Are All Walking Each Other Home," "Rest Easy" and "I Am Giving You Light." The first Threshold Choir sang in California in 2000; today there are more than 200 worldwide. Guthrie's choir sings twice a month at bedsides around the Hudson Valley, including at the Rosary Hill Home for terminal cancer patients in Hawthorne. "Music puts you in a different place," says Guthrie, who, along with other family members, "sang out" to her parents when each died years ago. "We have stepped away from being present for people when they are sick and dying," she says. The Meaningful Life with Andrew G. Marshall

In 2017, Rachel Weiss watched a TV programme about the menopause and was inspired to hold a Menopause Café. This has now turned into an international movement of pop-up events where women and the men in their lives meet to drink tea, eat cake and talk menopause. The Menopause Café is modelled on the Death Café movement, founded by Jon Underwood.  In this episode, Rachel and Andrew talk about women's experiences of menopause and the impact on their lives and relationships. The menopause has long been a taboo subject, and raises profound issues of shame and silence around the female body. Women have suffered due to the lack of knowledge or public conversation about the menopause, and so have their partners.  The Menopause Cafe is playing a crucial role in an increasingly more open discourse on the menopause, helping women to live through this stage of their lives with understanding rather than fear and loneliness.  Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. You will then hear about one company using this technology – CPay – which is using the Ethereum blockchain to make everyday payments simpler, faster, more secure, and also provide community benefit. Simon Love speaks with founder Jon Underwood and lead developer Ryan Casey about this fascinating technology. Listen in to hear why Jon says “Ethereum will either thrive or fade away based on how well it can solve real-world problems with smart contracts" Guests: Jon Underwood, Founder and CEO Jon Underwood is the Founder & CEO of Cloud Currencies, dba cPay. Jon sees money like water, and has studied the way money flows for a long time. cPay started with the question “What if we could dig ‘local trenches’ to make money flow where we wanted it to, transforming scarcity into abundance, and creating a new source of economic strength that could ‘flood’ our local economies, building community health and wealth for everyone?” Jon has a strong interest in Rudolf Steiner’s economic indications, often referred to as Associative Economics, and has started numerous ventures and companies. Jon has ongoing interests in local currencies, local foodsheds, local energy, localizing regional economies, community-wide rewards programs, and exploring new corporate governance and management structures that are better able to support the varied interests of the community of stakeholders. Jon received his BA in Economics from U.C. Berkeley, and his ‘Green’ MBA in Sustainable Business form Marylhurst University. Jon and his wife Carrie live near Reed College, along with their two Weimaraners Henry and Evelyn. Ryan has been building web apps since 2011, and has focused almost exclusively on several open source projects using the Ethereum blockchain. A highly skilled programmer, Ryan is part of a global group working on the infrastructure necessary to build out the Ethereum Blockchain ecosystem, and specializes in smart contracts. Ryan states “cPay helps keep capital in the bioregional economy, which enriches all local market participants, and furthermore redirects money that would have otherwise been lost to transnational corporations into projects that directly impact the local quality of life. If you want to improve the region you live in, invest in it.” Ryan is a programmer with Nexus Development and contributor to Maker DAO, and built our payment App from the ground up. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from George Fox University. In this episode you will learn: What is a blockchain? How blockchains function without a central command What is cryptocurrency and how is value created? Your brain is plastic. No, I didn’t say your brain is made out of plastic, I said your brain is plastic, as in easily shaped or molded. Neuroscientists tells us that by dwelling on a thought, good or bad, we cut a new groove in our gray matter, which then influences our behavior. Even of you’re an old coot like me, born in 1956 and with a brain like a dried fig.  Talking about death cuts a a new groove in your brain, a better groove, one with more awareness and less fear. Yes, we are talking death, with Jon Underwood, founder of the Death Cafe. And honest, open talk is the good heart of any effective Death Cafe: an event where folks can get together over coffee and cake, and just talk. That’s the simple beauty of a Death Cafe. No agenda. No sales pitch. Just real human interaction, eyeball to eyeball, knee to knee. I recorded this interview with Jon Underwood in 2014. He was then, and always will be to me, one of the most gentle, kind, and compassionate people I ever had the honor to know. I admire his work greatly. As the founder of the Death Cafe, Jon encouraged people around the world to discuss, over tea and cake, life, the finality of life and why we fear it. John passed away in 2017.

And secondly they find out about the increasingly popular 'Death Cafés where people meet for tea, cake and a jolly discussion about mortality, all run by Jon Underwood who feels we don't talk about death half enough.
