I've called myself a recovering overachiever. I'm recovering not from the drive to excel but from the anxiety inherent to wondering if anything I achieve will ever be enough. And folks, it's a struggle. The philosophy Byung-Chul Han describes this anxiety as central to contemporary society. He dubs our modern age the “Achievement Society” and argues that our plethora of potential projects and opportunities work to maximize our productivity. After all, what better way to inspire people to greater efficiency than by inspiring them to tackle #AllTheThings? This week, I talk with the host of The Anxious Achiever and author of the forthcoming book of the same name, Morra Aarons-Mele. We both the anxiety that the drive to achieve can create and how mental health conditions of all kinds impact the way we work.Footnotes: Pre-order The Anxious Achiever by Morra Aarons-Mele Listen to The Anxious Achiever podcast on your favorite app Find out more about Morra Aarons-Mele The Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault “High-Functioning Anxiety - Life Fright of the Shy Loud” presented by Jordan Raskopoulos at TEDxSydney ★ Support this podcast ★
This is the episode all about social anxiety: what it is, what it isn't, and how to manage it. Maybe you're a "shy-loud" person who shines on the stage, but avoids intimate dinners. Perhaps you're a CEO who loves work meetings, but dreads the parties. Maybe family and friends are the one place you let down-- or the one place you feel like a failure. At least 40 million Americans report that they experience social anxiety. It has nothing to do with being an introvert versus an extrovert. Want to know what actually triggers social anxiety? This episode's just for you.As mentioned in the episode:Living With High Functioning Anxiety with Jordan Raskopoulos

Jordan is the lead singer of the Comedy trio Axis of Awesome. I have known Jordan for a good few years and I was really shocked when I saw her facebook post last year that she was coming out as a woman. It was great to chat to her about her journey, how life is like since, how it was before and what its like performing now as a woman. I put my foot in it loads, messed up the pro nouns and learned a lot from the first friend I have known that has transitioned. Definitely the most interesting chat to date. Let's get one thing clear. Jordan Raskopoulos is not a unicorn. Although, hey, she has no judgement if you are.But Jordan is sometimes treated as a unicorn, because she is a transgender woman, AND a member of one of Australia's most successful comedy acts, The Axis of Awesome, who tour worldwide and have had 100 million YouTube hits.Jordan has been in Axis since before, during and after her transition. Jordan talks about how her life has changed since transitioning, how it has affected her role in one of Australia's favourite comedy acts, what cisgender means, and she brings us a new understanding of the term "gender dysmorphia."It's a conversation worth hearing.Show notes:The Nitty Gritty Committee is hosted by Meshel LaurieTell her your thoughts on her facebook pageAnd if you love this show, please leave a review and star rating in itunes.
