Phil Silvers was a comic who did it all and conquered it all, from his early days of vaudeville and burlesque, to Hollywood, to Broadway, to TV super stardom, BACK to Hollywood and Broadway, Phil Silvers dominated every field of comedy. Silvers starred In Broadway classics like High Button Shoes, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum and his signature role of Jerry Biffle in the timeless hit Top Banana. In film he was in movies like 40 Pounds of Trouble, Follow That Camel and the classic It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, but it is probably his stint on TV as Master Sgt Ernie Bilko that Silvers will forever be associated with, Silvers character of Sgt. Bilko has left a lasting impression on comedy on both sides of the Atlantic. Today we discuss the life and career of this legendary funnyman with Mr. Steve Everitt, a life long Silvers fan who co-founded the Phil Silvers Archival Museum and owner of the store Sgt. Bowfinger could not have come at a better time for any of its three biggest names. In 1999, Frank Oz, who had a string of successful collaborations with Steve Martin, was coming right off the critical and commercial hit In and Out in 1997, which happened to star 1999's most cursed star yet, one we've talked a lot about lately, Kevin Kline. But Martin was in need of a return to form, having come off a string of duds like A Simple Twist of Fate, Mixed Nuts (now a cult Christmas favorite), Father of the Bride 2 and the dire Sgt. Bilko and The Out-of-Towners.  And Murphy's career had hit a similar snag before the late 90s. After a string of huge comedy hits like 48 hours, Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop in the early 80s, Murphy's track record began to sour, with the diminishing returns of Another 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cops 2 and 3, so-so comedies that never made the best of him like Distinguised Gentelman and Boomerang in the early 90s, all culminating in the legendarily terrible Vampire in Brooklyn in 1995. But Murphy had been given another shot of life with Tom Shadyac's The Nutty Professor remake in 1996. It was Bowfinger that really played to the strength of Oz, Martin, and Murphy, allowing Murphy to showcase his wild comic versatility, Martin his sharp comic writing, and Oz his ability to craft a great, quick-paced feature-length comedy. Even though Bowfinger isn't the best-known or best-remembered of any of the their work, it was a critical hit and is beloved by those in the know, including filmmaker and editor Greg MacLennan, who joined the show to talk about his love of this love-letter to scrappy filmmaking. Phil Silvers was one of the early stars of television and his Sgt. Bilko character remains a small screen classic. Never a standup comic, Phil instead graced tv, movies, and the Broadway stage (winning a Tony Award in the process). Jonathan Lynn has directed 10 feature films including the cult classic Clue (he also wrote the screenplay), Nuns on the Run (also written by Mr Lynn), My Cousin Vinny, The Distinguished Gentleman, Sgt. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Dwayne Chattman. Actor/Writer/Singer and creator of The Lockhavens, Dwayne N. Chattman was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from Colonel White High School. Dwayne decided to make a very bold move - he packed up what he could and took a bus all the way to Chicago, where he attended acting classes at The Goodman Theatre. He also received a scholarship for dance at The Ruth Page School of Ballet and another ballet scholarship with Chicago City Ballet, studying under the world-renowned instructor, Maria Tallchief. These talents landed Dwayne the lead role of Tyrone Jackson in the hit Broadway Musical, Fame. He received critical acclaim on the National Tour, and it was a huge honor for him to record on the original cast album and to appear on Fame, the television series, as a dancer. Dwayne was also one of the African dancers in the unforgettable and classic scene in the motion picture Coming to America. This gave Dwayne even more drive, ven though his acting career was just beginning at this point. He worked on many national commercials including Pepsi, Pringles, Key Bank, Sunkist, MCI, California Lotto and non-smoking public service announcements. Dwayne has appeared on television shows including Martial Law where he played a street fighter and Noah's Ark, America's first gay black television series. Film credits include Virtuosity, Sgt. Bilko, Redemption, and The Exorcism. Not only is Dwayne strong as a dramatic actor, but he also proved his comedic talent in a recurring role on the sketch comedy show Mind of Mencia, which aired on Comedy Central. The sky is the limit for this veteran and up and coming star.
