In this episode Elaine chats with Australian performance artist and dancer Leah Shelton about her show Batshit. We chat the inspiration for the show, her grandmother's story and the narrative of the “Cray” woman. Batshit - Traverse Theatre Dates: 1st -25th August @ Various Times Get Tickets Here: https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/batshit-festival-24 BATSHIT Women have long been locked up, medicated, pathologized and silenced by a simple label - ‘crazy'. BATSHIT is a wildly theatrical, unexpectedly funny, and deeply intimate story of female madness. Created by psycho-siren Leah Shelton (AU) and directed by Olivier award-winning performance artist Ursula Martinez (UK), this is a requiem for Leah's grandmother Gwen, who was incarcerated for seeking independence in 1960s Australia. BATSHIT draws on personal stories, pop psychology and Prozac-laden humour to explore the myths, fantasies and fears that keep us compliant, and the systems that let us down. Dedicated to all the women labelled hysterical, psycho, hormonal and deluded by a society that seeks to control and discredit their experiences. LEAH SHELTON Psycho-siren Leah Shelton creates stylized, guttural, renegade feminist work soaked in cult references and dark humour. Her work has taken her from the glamour of Las Vegas to the back streets of Kings Cross, from rigorous training in Japan to live art festivals in New York. As a solo artist, Leah has played on and off West End in London. She has graced the cabaret stages of La Clique, Club Briefs, Little Death Club, Vegas Nocturne and Jonny Woo's infamous UnRoyal Variety Show. Her first solo work, ‘Terror Australis', received numerous awards and toured Australia and France. Leah's second solo work, ‘Bitch On Heat', directed by UK Performance Art luminary Ursula Martinez, has toured to major festivals in Australia and Soho Theatre London to critical acclaim and standing ovations. With Lisa Fa'alafi, Leah is Co-Director of artist collective Polytoxic, creating hyper-visual works underpinned by diversity and collaboration. Polytoxic have presented work at PS122's COIL Festival NYC, Harbourfront Centre Canada, WanSmolbag Vanuatu, Sydney Opera House, Darwin Festival, Brisbane Festival, APAM, Bleach*, Enlighten, ArtsHouse Melbourne, Ten Days on the Island, Brisbane Powerhouse and QPAC.Originally dance-trained, Leah has a diverse performance background including over ten years training in the Suzuki Actor Training Method with Frank Theatre (Brisbane, AU), Suzuki Company of Toga (Toga / Shizuoka, Japan) and SITI Company (New York, USA). https://www.leahshelton.live/batshit HIPA GUIDES: HIPA GUIDES OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Coffee Morning Eventbrite - Coffee Morning Tickets LINKTREE - LINKTR.EE Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE

As we grapple with a cost of living crisis and increasing individual isolation, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, disconnected and downcast. But what if the secrets to unlocking a happier life were right in front of you, and not that far out of reach?   Over a remarkable 85 years, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has conducted an unprecedented investigation on happiness. Through this extensive research, led by distinguished Harvard researcher (and TED talk celebrity) Robert Waldinger, the study unearthed a profound truth: the key to a fulfilled life lies not in financial wealth or our work, but rather in the power of our relationships.  Hear from Robert Waldinger as he discusses his remarkable study with Dr Stephanie Ward (expert geriatrician on the ABC's Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds and Teenagers) as they uncover the recipe for a happier life.  Presented by the UNSW Centre for Ideas and UNSW Medicine & Health as a part of National Science Week, and supported by Byron Writers Festival and Brisbane Powerhouse.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ClimateWeekQLD Hello Dan Ilic here — Thanks to the Queensland Government for inviting us to perform at Climate Week .The team of producers were incredible, and the production staff at the Brisbane Powerhouse were slick professional units. You may notice there is one word we're avoiding to say in the show. That word begins with A and ends in I, has Dan in between. We were told about 20 minutes before the show, so some minor tweaks had to happen on the fly. I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to that as we go. Bridie Connell and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd do some topical music for us. Tom Ballard tells us that it's all over and there's no hope left. The Queensland Government put a bid in for the 2038 Nuclear Winter Games. MICF Pinder Prize winner Steph Tisdell give insects the tick of approval, and goes on the hunt for true love with an entomologist. Mel Buttle hopes that foodies will go extinct. Alan Jones has some thoughts on climate change. Professor Hilary Bambrick scares us all to death with what the real health ramifications are for humans on a warming planet. Lewis Hobba thinks he has solutions to the climate crisis, but ends up just blaming Queenslanders for it all. It is truly an excellent 90 minutes of climate change banter. Over their career, they’ve released three albums and have shared stages with the likes of Moby, Fatboy Slim, Roni Size & Regurgitator. The culmination of two years hard work, BNE: The Definitive Archive is a prolific look at the last 35 years of independent electronic music in Brisbane. Compiled by Trans:Com the book features some 140 bands and artists as well as an archive of 260 recordings. In terms of Brisbane music or even electronic music journalism not much else comes close to the sheer breadth of scope contained within Project BNE. On September 6th 2014, Trans:Com launched BNE: The Definitive Archive at The Brisbane powerhouse with performances by The Mega Men, Vision Four 5, Soma Rasa and Boxcar. The Mega Men: The Mega Men were formed in 1982 by Zhian Behm, Mark love and Lance Leopard. They were well known throughout the Brisbane underground party scene for their unique style and flair; a picture perfect remix of new-romantic fashion and 80s excess. They continued to play the club scene throughout the 80s and even performed on TV for channel 7; a performance that brings to mind both the pop flamboyance of Adam Ant with the cool German efficiency of a group like DAF. They reformed in 2012 and still make the occasional public appearance. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Brisbane Powerhouse. 6th September 2014. Vision Four 5: Originally formed by Noel Burgess, Ben Suthers and Gavin Sade in 1990 and active up until 1997, Vision Four 5 were a live dance music act that significantly incorporated live video and animation into their performances. Known best for their club hit ‘Everything You Need’ Vision Four 5 played regularly at Big Day Out, clubs and raves across Australia with other recognisable electronic dance acts such as: Boxcar, Severed Heads and Single Gun Theory. Both Burgess and Suthers remained with the group until 97, joining them from 93 onwards were Tim Gruchy and Al Ferguson. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Brisbane Powerhouse. 6th September 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 2 January 2015. Show production and engineering: Josh Watson.

Circular Keys: Circular Keys are an electronic duo from the big smoke, Melbourne. Their enormous live-presence comes from the 6-string axe; Dennis Santiago shows you how much you can accomplish with an aluminium guitar and a table of pedals. While he’s preoccupied with laying down the law of audio-land, singer Phillipa O’Shea isn’t stuck in the background corner with the equal parts massive and angelic vocal chords. Room 40 invited them up to Brisbane to support Mark McGuire for the annual sound and media festival, Open Frame. Recorded & mixed by Joshua Watson Live at The Brisbane Powerhouse, 14 September 2013 Lucy Cliché: Lucy Cliché is Sydney’s Geneva Jacuzzi or Nite Jewel or Maria Minerva; an electronic artist flitting between the worlds of experimentalism and bedroom-pop. Her diverse catalogue includes the noise-rock band Naked on the Vague, Half High her ambient-noise project with partner Matthew Hopkins and the celebration of weird that is Knitted Abyss with Holy Balm’s Anna John. October 2013 saw an independent release for her debut solo album, Picture Yourself, a collection of songs as melancholic as they are beautiful. Blank Realm invited her up for their record launch to play a few of those picturesque pop songs. Recorded by Joshua Watson & Andrew Mclellan. Mixed by Joshua Watson. Live at The Underdog, 8 February 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 21 February 2014. Show production and engineering: Joshua Watson.
