Lynne Stroy, Katie Walters, and Natasha Gray come straight to the podcast after watching an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Released in 1970, the show depicts Mary Richards, a single woman in her 30s, living in Minneapolis, trying to make a life for herself. The storyline seems archaic now, as society in 2024 is vastly more opportunistic for women. In today's episode, we'll ask, “How far have we progressed from the country's dark history of racism and gender inequality?”   As these three ladies, alongside host Joey Svendsen, reflect on this question, they also discuss the role that ignorance plays in matters of inequality and what grace looks like when offered to those who have more learning to do. What sort of humility and understanding should one tap into when reflecting on past generations or societies in other parts of the world today that err on very important matters. The four also get into theology on women's leadership in the Church and wrap up the conversation talking about the The Chosen Women's Conference, including a snippet of a woman's story whom, while attending, encountered freedom and forgiveness from a regretful decision she made a decade ago. In many ways, this week's episode on myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a companion piece to last week's episode on Long Covid. The two share many similarities: a wide range of debilitating symptoms lingering long after infection, an illness which can transform from day to day or week to week, dismissal and downplaying by the medical community, a big question mark under “pathophysiological cause”, and so many others. These parallels can tell us a great deal about our concepts of disease and how we deal with uncertainty in science and medicine. But the differences between these two can be equally revealing. In this episode, we dig into what we know and what we hypothesize about the biological underpinnings of ME/CFS before tracing the twisty history of this disease, as popular perception switched back and forth and back again from “real” to “imagined” disease. We wrap up the episode with a look at some of the current research and promising treatments for ME/CFS. Both ME/CFS and Long Covid demonstrate the power of patients and patient advocates in raising awareness about poorly understood diseases and the impact that sharing personal stories can have. Infidelity can rip a marriage apart — and it's hard to imagine a betrayal more painful than finding out your spouse is involved with someone else. Josh and Katie Walters share the story of Katie's affair with the husband of their good friend couple, and how Katie vacillated for quite a while, torn between doing the right thing (ending the affair) and still feeling love for the other man. Meanwhile, Josh was convinced by God that divorce was wrong and he needed to love Katie as Christ loves the Church, which meant pushing through the pain and hoping against hope to rescue his marriage. Josh and Katie have developed an acronym — S.T.A.Y. — for struggling couples. "S" stands for "Start with me," or taking ownership of your own sin and mistakes instead of blaming your spouse. They also address “T” — “Take quitting off of the table,” and Katie shares a story of making a vow to the Lord of “You can have my feet,” which meant she still wasn't sure about her love/marriage with Josh, but she wouldn't be going anywhere.   Receive a copy of New Marriage, Same Couple for your donation of any amount.   Have You Lost Hope in Your Marriage? Is it possible for a marriage to recover from infidelity? Can the emotional wounds of an affair ever be a thing of the past? Can trust be rebuilt after betrayal?   Catherine's special guests in this episode answer those questions with a resounding “yes!” Josh and Katie Walters, authors of New Marriage, Same Couple: Don't Let Your Worst Days Be Your Last Days, had a marriage that was rocked to the core from an affair that nearly destroyed their relationship. Their restoration required grace, forgiveness, hope, and leaning into God like never before, but now their marriage is the epitome of love and fulfillment that we all long for with our spouses.   In this raw conversation, Josh shares how the desperation of his darkest hours fed a hunger for God like never before, and that hunger brought hope and healing. Katie shares how she found in Christ a loving Savior who is kinder than anyone we know. Piece by piece, God put their marriage back together and has given them a ministry to restore other marriages.   The enemy has come to steal our marriages, our children, our families, our futures, but God is committed to bring abundant life into our closest relationships. Josh and Katie Walters have experienced this reality first hand and they seek to share that redemption with others.   Josh's Bio: Josh has been on staff at Seacoast Church for the last 14 years where he currently serves as the Executive Pastor for Seacoast Experience. We all want to have a marriage that thrives, but one-third of Christian marriages end in divorce, a figure that is “statistically identical to that of non-born again adults” according to recent research from Barna.   What critical foundation are so many Christians missing in their marriage that leads to the demise of their primary relationship?   Josh and Katie Walters, authors of the brand new book New Marriage, Same Couple: Don't Let Your Worst Days Be Your Last Days, identify four essential principles that will help every marriage to thrive. After a devastating season involving an affair that rocked their marriage to the core, Josh and Katie discovered four Biblical mindsets that transformed their relationship. Those mindsets form the word STAY:   S—Start with you. T—Take quitting off the table. A—Allow others to be a part of your story. Y—Yield to God's vision for your marriage.   The true testament of these mindsets is that they were applied to a dead marriage, and now that marriage is thriving. Catherine, Josh & Katie have a refreshing, raw, and grace-filled conversation about how we allow the enemy to sew seeds of discord and destruction into our relationships, but God has a plan to redeem what the enemy has stolen.   Josh's Bio: Josh has been on staff at Seacoast Church for the last 14 years where he currently serves as the Executive Pastor for Seacoast Experience.
