Lust is a man's problem, right? Wrong. When we see lust as an exclusively male issue, it leaves Christian women with nowhere to turn when they struggle with the same things. They suffer silently and feel like they will never be free. Jessica Harris has been there, and she has made it her mission to break the silence, banish the shame, and bring women's struggles into the light of God's grace and forgiveness. She understands that when you suffer in silence, you are building a wall of shame between yourself and God that God does not desire for you. Join us as she shows women a road map for restoration that answers the question "Is there grace left for me?" with a resounding and emphatic "Yes!"Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jessica Harris is the owner of Four Sisters Childcare in Linden, Utah — a thriving center named after her four daughters. Alongside her husband, she's built a program that's now serving 91 full-time equivalent students with a capacity of 86 and a waitlist. But her real work goes beyond enrollment. In this episode, Jessica shares her journey from running a home daycare to leading a full-blown center, all while growing as a leader, navigating fear, and learning how to truly step into her power. She opens up about the deep personal habits that ground her, the way she teaches resilience to her staff, and how she learned to treat herself like the CEO of her own life with systems, policies, and boundaries. She talks with Kris about how she rebuilt from burnout, found peace in structure, and created a culture where small daily wins add up to big growth. Key Takeaways: [2:58] Kris is heading to Bali to work on her leadership, mindset, and spiritual growth. [7:02] Jessica and her husband run Four Sisters Childcare, named after their four daughters. The center started as an in-home program and now serves 91 FTE students with a waitlist. [8:28] A push from Kris at a conference inspired Jessica to expand into a center — an idea that changed everything. [11:42] Jessica was never someone who dreamed big, but learning to shift her mindset has helped her move from fear to confidence. [16:59] The past year brought clarity: her center's “why” is teaching resilience, not just to children, but to her staff. [19:04] Personal growth, including spiritual habits and consistency, helped Jessica move through fear and burnout. [22:02] Missing her daily practices for just two weeks during Summit reminded her how essential small habits are for inner peace. [23:29] Jessica teaches her staff to create “personal policies and procedures” the same way a company would, down to details like where to leave a retainer at night. [26:51] Her team resonated deeply with the message, and starting small helped them follow through on goals they'd struggled with for years. [28:09] Jessica applies the CEO mindset to social media habits too: setting systems and supervision helps her stay accountable without cutting Instagram out entirely. [30:46] Systems = success. Whether it's the gym or your phone, adjusting your system helps you follow through. [36:41] Just like sharing your brownies, it's important to share your strengths and successes. [38:17] Marketing strategy: strong Google Ads, Facebook, and Instagram stories, a busy road, rotating banners, and word-of-mouth from alumni families. [41:56] Jessica and her husband pursued a second location but learned through the process that they needed a little more time to prepare. [44:25] Not getting the building was a hard lesson in acceptance but also an opportunity for growth, reflection, and systems testing. Quotes: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable, and you'll see the growth.” — Jessica [12:30] “I have slowly been learning my passion and realizing that resilience, along with communication, is just huge. It's huge.” — Jessica [19:05] “We are our own CEOs, and we have to have policies and procedures for ourselves, and we have to follow them just like a company. If you don't do that, it fails.” — Jessica [23:29] “If you do what you say you're going to do, then you have a higher level of deservingness, self-love, and value.” — Kris [27:50] “When things either go my way or don't go my way, it's like, I'm not going to put power into wanting to claw at it and control it and need it and be in resistance to the fact that it's not working. It's just to be in acceptance and it'll flow.” — Jessica [45:08] Sponsored By: ChildCare Education Institute (CCEI) Use code CCSC5 to claim a free course! Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America, into a 4 part docuseries. And I'm very proud to say that she's a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother's signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she'd be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. A look at the President's kitchen and some of the first cooks to feed the Founding Fathers—Hercules and James Hemings—the enslaved chefs of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Hercules, described as a “dandy,” had eight assistants—stewards, butlers, undercooks, waiters. He cooked in a huge fireplace—hearth cooking. He walked through the streets of Philadelphia in a velvet waistcoat, with a gold-handled cane. When Washington was getting ready to leave Philadelphia to return to Mt. Vernon, Hercules escaped. Washington sent out search parties and offered rewards. Hercules was never found. In 1784, Thomas Jefferson was appointed minister to France. He took with him his body servant, 19-year-old James Hemings (the brother of Sally Hemings), to master the French style of cooking. Hemings apprenticed with well-known French caterers and pastry chefs and assumed the role of chef de cuisine in Jefferson's kitchen on the Champs-Elysees, earning $48 a year. In 1793, Hemings petitioned Jefferson for his freedom. Jefferson consented upon one condition—he must train someone to take his place. After teaching his brother, Peter Hemings, the cooking techniques he had learned in France and at home, James Hemings became a free man. These stories begin a long connection of presidents and their African American cooks, including the story of Zephyr Wright, President Lyndon Johnson's cook who worked for the family for 27 years. Johnson spoke to Zephyr Wright about the Civil Rights Movement and the March on Washington. She attended the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Johnson gave her a pen he used to sign the document. Featuring interviews with: Jessica Harris, Culinary Historian and author of The Welcome Table: African American Heritage Cooking; Historian Willliam Seale, author of The President's House; Chef Joe Randall, founder of African American Chef's Hall of Fame; William Woys Weaver, food historian and author; Sharron Conrad, African American food historian. Special thanks to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and Michael L. Gillette for use of Zephyr Wright's oral history. Jessica Harris has twice won James Beard Foundation awards, including one for Lifetime achievement. Rather than just being in the kitchen, she has proved herself to be especially skilled at blending sentences and paragraphs and then seasoning the mix with a generous heaping of knowledge to create fresh culinary history. For one of her recent books, “High on the Hog” she went to Africa to discover some of the links between African cooking and classic American dishes. Her Netflix series based on the book was so successful that a second season has been produced. Harris, who lives in Brooklyn but also has a residence in New Orleans – itself a destination for Afro/Caribbean/European/Cajun fusion, joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot, to talk about the culinary discoveries that are part of cooking. She also discusses the cross-cultural origins of savory words such as gumbo and jambalaya.
This month's bonus series is on a topic that can tend to be very uncomfortable to talk about. But this is a good uncomfortable. Pornography is a subject that affects all of us in one way or another and it's important to have these conversations.Studies show that 33% of pornography consumers are female. This is no longer an issue that can only be talked about to men. With very little resources available to women, shame and guilt keep too many women hiding and in chains. On today's episode Jessica Harris, author of Quenched, shares her story of addiction and freedom. Jessica shares valuable ways we can help people without shaming them! Picture this: A 13-year-old girl, curious and eager to understand her burgeoning sexuality, finds herself descending into the throes of hardcore pornography. Sounds shocking, right? But this isn't a scene from a disturbing novel, it's the real-life story of Jessica Harris. A long-time friend, Jessica joins us in an exceptionally candid discussion about her own struggle with pornography and how it led her into a vortex of shame and addiction. We delve into the often-overlooked aspect of female interaction with pornography and how it can seem like a "safe" exploration of sexuality.Together, we bring to light the power of God's grace for women battling with pornography, shattering misconceptions and addressing the unusual challenges pornography can impose on a marriage. We emphasize the importance of vulnerability and the magic of open communication in a marriage when dealing with struggles like these. Jessica's insights into how pornography can hinder our innate desires for acceptance, intimacy, and unconditional love are both enlightening and thought-provoking. But far from a gloomy discourse, our conversation is ultimately infused with hope and optimism. We assure you that freedom and God's grace are attainable, even in the midst of the struggle with pornography. WARNING: This episode discusses pornography and may not be suitable for all listeners. What do you do when you struggle with an addiction, but you don't fit the common narrative of those who struggle with that addiction? For author and speaker Jessica Harris, it was often difficult to even talk openly about her addiction to pornography that started as a teen because most people deemed this a male-only problem. But, porn addiction affects women as well as men. In fact, in recent years the amount of women who have consumed and became addicted to porn, has significantly increased. And yet, even in places like the Church, this topic is often taboo or not talked about. And for those who suffer from the effects of this addiction, it can breed shame and isolation, which keeps them from experiencing the healing and hope Jesus Christ offers. It was because of her own journey that Jessica decided to begin sharing her story through her ministry, Beggar's Daughter, and help other women struggling with pornography addiction to know they are not alone. In this important conversation, Aubrey sits down with Jessica to discuss how the narrative in the Church surrounding pornography is often harmful to women who are struggling with this addiction, the freedom that comes from sharing our story, and how healing can come for those who are suffering silently. You don't have to have struggled with a similar issue to see how shame is a powerful weapon of the enemy to keep us from breaking free from the lies and strongholds that stop us from the invitation to healing that Jesus offers. In this episode, Julie and Ginger are talking about relationships between parents and teachers with their guest host, Jessica Harris. Jessica was a teacher with 17 years of experience until she began the CLIMB program. As an alternative to out of school suspensions, the CLIMB program provides students with intensive instruction and support while keeping them in school. Through this program, Jess is changing the educational landscape and using teacher-parent relationships as a tool. We know that relationships are key between the teacher and their students, but what about between teachers and the parents? How do we initiate this relationship? How can we get off on the right foot? How do we approach this from a trauma informed lens? And - Why is it so important? Listen in to learn what needs parents have, what needs teachers have and how we can fill those needs. The relationship between the parents and teacher is the key. The biggest obstacle to forming these relationships is time. Jess shares some tips to work around this obstacle. Jess says, “We must share every win that every child achieves.” It is critical.
Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. With a passion for material culture, Dr. Williams-Forson focuses her research on African Americans' lives in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. She is a multidisciplinary academic, serving as an affiliate faculty member of the Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies, the Departments of Anthropology, African American Studies, The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Her extensive research in this area employs cultural studies, intersectionality, and popular culture to inform our understanding of historical legacies of race and gender representation. In Nicolette's second PhD interview, Dr. Psyche discusses her doctoral research on the association between Black people and chicken, which turned into just one chapter of her broader research. Their conversation explores the foodways of Black people, Southern food, and the legacy of slavery, which resulted in African slaves' agricultural knowledge. The discussion also touches on the complexity of factors contributing to Black people's health, including trauma and violence, and how food choices are not solely responsible. They highlight the importance of understanding that choosing what to eat is a middle/upper-class conversation, and food shaming should be avoided. Instead, we need to consider factors such as taste, access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of how to prepare food. Dr. Psyche emphasizes that eating is a necessity, and we need to help people where they are. Pornography is not always something people feel comfortable talking about, inside of marriage or out. This is most especially true within the church. Today Christa is joined by author Jessica Harris, Enneagram 4w5 (4-3 marriage pairing) as she both shares her story and discusses an important topic for couples, especially women who desire to find freedom and true healing from pornography. As we discss this pivotal topic that has been ignored in the church in many cases (often out of fear or not knowing what to say many times), we talk about ways we can hold one another with grace and love as we walk through and emerge from these binding struggles. We also talk about what Jesus had to say to the woman at the well, and most, what you can do to regain healing from your own struggles with this addiction, as well as lean in to support those struggling who may come your way. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Lust is a man's problem, right? Wrong. When we see lust as an exclusively male issue, it leaves Christian women with nowhere to turn when they struggle with the same things. A 2016 Barna study found 20 percent of Christian women use porn regularly. These women suffer silently and often feel alone with nowhere to turn. There are numerous resources for men struggling, but not women. Today's guest, Jessica Harris, made it her mission to break the silence, banish the shame, and bring women's struggles into the light of God's grace and forgiveness. Jessica and I talk about how Christian women can overcome porn addiction and sexual shame. Quotables from the episode: With the advent of the internet came pornography accessibility to women. At the core of pornography addiction is loneliness, pressure to go further into other sexual exploits and harm. Often, those who struggle with porn addiction are searching for comfort, for belonging, and even the desire to disappear. Their worth, value, and identity become wrapped up and all about sex. Pornography divorces sex and intimacy. God has grace for women who struggle with pornography and/or sexual shame. Women who struggle with pornography can have a vibrant, abundant, and full life and future. We are image bearers of God, so our worth comes from Christ. He loves us and bought us with a price. The 3 signposts of shame are: 1) warning sign: during which there is an absorption with self; 2) Flight from exposure: we isolate from others to minimize the same; 3) Violence: we lash out and protect what we try to hide. Shame isolates; whereas God welcomes us into holiness. What hope do we have if we believe that the Giver of freedom wants nothing to do with us? The message Christian women need isn't “stop watching porn” or “porn is bad and contributes to human trafficking” etc. Instead, what they need is a reminder of God's grace and to know that shame is trying to keep them from the one relationship they need in order to experience true life-giving freedom. Grace is something we need every single day. Every single one of us. It doesn't matter our backstory, shame is always looking for a way to separate us from God, isolate us, and drive us back into the comforts we once knew (sin). There is grace and freedom to be found by drawing nearer to God not hiding from Him. When you are in the thick of a pornography addiction, or even in the beginning of trying to break free, it can feel like a battle you will never win. It can feel like you are going to spend the rest of your life actively fighting this, and I would want them to know that is not the case. Christ offers us freedom and abundant life and science itself has even proven that our minds and bodies can heal. So while the ideal picture of freedom might seem impossible right now, it's not impossible. Nothing is impossible with God. Shame, by its nature, isolates. It drives us into darkness and into secrecy and we lie to ourselves when we try to convince ourselves we can find freedom on our own. Part of freedom is found in community. Scripture References: John 4:13-14 ESV “Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 10:10 HCSB “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 15:4 ESV “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” Recommended Resources: Quenched: Discovering God's Abundant Grace for Women Struggling with Pornography and Sexual Shame by Jessica Harris Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. Welcome to Sanctuary Woman, a place that invites women to show up with their whole minds and their whole bodies rather than suppress that which the church may have told us is shameful. Many Christian women have nowhere to turn and are looking for the brave spaces, the safe spaces, where their sexual shame can be spoken, set free, and can finally be undone. Our guest today, Jessica Harris, has been there, and she has made it her mission to break the silence, banish the shame, and bring women's struggles into the light of God's grace, liberation, and forgiveness. She understands that when you suffer in silence, a wall of shame is built between yourself and God that God does not desire for you. In her new authentic and honest book, Quenched: Discovering God's Abundant Grace for Women Struggling with Pornography and Sexual Shame, Jessica shows women a road map for restoration. If you are someone who feels stuck in any sort of sexual shame this episode is for you.
