American actor
POPULARITY
Kurt McKinney originally hails from Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of 21 he was already a black belt in taekwondo and an amateur kickboxing champion. He decided to become an actor and moved to Hollywood. He would go on to star in the 1985 film No Retreat, No Surrender as the lead. The film, one of the 1st Hong Kong-U.S. crossovers (written and directed by Corey Yuen), also starred the man who would become known as Van Dammage, Jean-Claude Van Damme as the main villain. The film was a sizable hit in the U.S. but Kurt didn't want to be typecast. Kurt went on to star on the soap General Hospital as Ned. This was after he was turned down for American Ninja because he was too young. He was offered to appear in American Ninja III-VI but he didn't like the idea of working on all the films in South Africa (he also turned down "No Retreat No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder" in 1987 possibly due to the film's location). Kurt went on to TV films like Sworn to Vengeance to big-screen films like Blonde Justice with Cynthia Rothrock. He currently appears on Guiding Light as Matt Reardon, but martial arts fans will always remember him from his film debut in 1985 as Jason Stillwell! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/support

When Loren Avedon answered a call to the Jun Chong Martial Arts Academy on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles late one night in 1987, little did he know that the call would prove to be life-changing. With only a matter of days until filming was scheduled to start in Thailand on the sequel to the 1986 martial arts hit, 'No Retreat, No Surrender', both of the film's contracted stars - Kurt McKinney and Jean-Claude Van Damme - had pulled out, leaving producer Roy Horan with the desperate task of having to contact the city's top dojos to quickly find a replacement. Enter young taekwondo ace, Loren Avedon; black belt student of brothers Phillip and Simon Rhee, part-time instructor at Jun Chong's and a used car salesman. After impressing Roy Horan, Loren found himself jetting off to Thailand to start his new career as a leading actor in martial arts action movies. 'No Retreat, No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder' would prove to be the first of a three-picture deal with the Hong Kong production company, Seasonal Films - created by Roy Horan and Ng See-yuen - followed by 'No Retreat, No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers' (1990) and 'The King of the Kickboxers' (1991). This blistering trio of fight classics quickly saw Loren Avedon become hot property in an already booming video market for martial arts movies. Listen as Loren speaks candidly about his formative years in LA and London, his martial arts training, his inspirations, his movie career, and the lessons he has learned after over three decades of working in the entertainment industry. Chris is joined in his dojo* by his podcasting sensei: comedian, writer, actor and generally funny-man, Marek Larwood. Marek has chosen the 1986 martial arts phenomenon NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER, with its spectacle of karate, rapping, body-popping, skateboarding and acting by people who've never really done acting before. You really don't want to miss this movie, or indeed this podcast. (*garage)
No Sell Entertainment's weekly movie review podcast takes on "No Retreat, No Surrender"(1986) starring Kurt McKinney and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
In the latest episode of CFC we talk about the 1986 Karate Kid clone No Retreat No Surrender starring Kurt McKinney and one of the first feature roles of Jean Claude Van Damme.
Phil, Kit & Graham gather in the ruins of the abandoned video store off highway 9 to watch the 1986 Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kurt McKinney classic "No Retreat, No Surrender." They laugh, they cry, and are haunted by the ghosts that still linger amongst the battered VHS tapes.
John and Jeff are back to talk about the first film involving Van Damme as a big time actor! If you haven’t shouted, “No Retreat, No Surrender” yet, you’ll be doing so as soon as you download this episode. Why is Jason Stillwell such a Bruce Lee fan? Why doesn’t his father like fighting? Was the […]
