Dragons Forever (Chinese: 飛龍猛將) is a 1988 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film directed by Sammo Hung, who also starred in the film, and co-directed by Corey Yuen. The film co-stars Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Pauline Yeung, Deannie Yip, Yuen Wah, Roy Chiao, and Crystal Kwok. It is the last film in which Hung, Chan and Biao all appeared in together, as later Chan subsequently focused on his solo film career.[3] In the film, a lawyer is hired to discover information that would destroy a fishery owner's reputation, and undermine her legal case against a chemical factory. The lawyer employs two agents to help his cause without informing them of their respective roles in the scheme, resulting in hostile relationships between the agents. The lawyer and his agents turn against their employers when they learn that the factory is a front for the production of narcotics. That's just from Wikipedia cuz I'm in a rush. (Also auch ALIENS, ALIEN³ & ALIEN: DIE WIEDERGEBURT). Welcome to the 80's! We all remember the time: lime green overalls, bolo ties, and dynamite doppelgängers. That's right, Kung Fjune continues with the Hong Kong movie that kicked off the Girls with Guns genre: Corey Yuen's YES, MADAM! from 1985!It was the high-five heard around the world: Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock's first starring roles. We're running down just how much these two women could kick one's ass, especially Rothrock's Grand Master status and how she was cooking fools even as a teenager, and take some time to shout out our numerous cameo-filled trios of doofuses.Plus, Nick connects the threads from last episode's Shaw talk on our 36th Chamber episode to YES, MADAM!'s contemporary setting. This movie kicked off a lot of careers, many of which guided the action genre through the next few decades and we're here to celebrate that.Next time we're heading to the 90's for a different side of Hong Kong film: Wong Kar-wei's CHUNGKING EXPRESS!

And to kick it off, Nick is finally making good on his longstanding threat to talk Shaw Bros: it's Lau Kar-Leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978)!36th Chamber is an enormous tentpole in kung fu film, and one of the first post-Bruce Lee HK movies to break through to international audiences. We're probing into what made it so influential, how it established training tropes, and we opine on why it's a perfect introduction to the genre. We're also talking about Lau Kar-Leung's approach to martial arts as a self-improvement tool, Gordon Liu and Shaw Bros' outsized impact outside of the kung fu world, and the Kill Bill siren. And yes, we mention Bruce Lee.But who are the Shaw Bros exactly? Nick's here with a quick rundown of their history and how there's literally a place called Movietown. We also determine what chambers would absolutely wreck us personally.Next time: we're agreeing with Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in Corey Yuen's YES MADAM (1985)!

Kurt McKinney originally hails from Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of 21 he was already a black belt in taekwondo and an amateur kickboxing champion. He decided to become an actor and moved to Hollywood. He would go on to star in the 1985 film No Retreat, No Surrender as the lead. The film, one of the 1st Hong Kong-U.S. crossovers (written and directed by Corey Yuen), also starred the man who would become known as Van Dammage, Jean-Claude Van Damme as the main villain. The film was a sizable hit in the U.S. but Kurt didn't want to be typecast. Kurt went on to star on the soap General Hospital as Ned. This was after he was turned down for American Ninja because he was too young. He was offered to appear in American Ninja III-VI but he didn't like the idea of working on all the films in South Africa (he also turned down "No Retreat No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder" in 1987 possibly due to the film's location). Kurt went on to TV films like Sworn to Vengeance to big-screen films like Blonde Justice with Cynthia Rothrock. He currently appears on Guiding Light as Matt Reardon, but martial arts fans will always remember him from his film debut in 1985 as Jason Stillwell! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/support

Vincent Lyn's short career in Hong Kong action movies may only span a few years, but his good looks, martial arts abilities and acting skills saw him work with some of the biggest names in the industry, operating at the height of their powers. The list includes Donnie Yen, Yuen Woo-ping, Corey Yuen, Cynthia Rothrock, Cynthia Khan, Simon Yam, and Jackie Chan. He admits he had no idea that the films he was making would go on to become so influential and cherished by generations of action fans around the world. In fact, given the ad-hoc nature and breakneck speed of Hong Kong filmmaking, he sometimes had very little concept of which film he was working on at any given time, moving from set to set as part of a staple of dependable 'gweilo' fighters who always played the villain, and ultimately got their asses kicked by the lead. His final Hong Kong film role was as the main heavy in the Jackie Chan adventure, 'Armour of God II: Operation Condor' (1991), before he returned to the USA to pursue a multitude of other talents. He became a kung fu instructor (teaching his own family style, Ling Gar Kung Fu), a Grammy Award-nominated musician, a philanthropist and humanitarian. His charity, We Can Save Children, has seen him visit some of the poorest parts of the world in a bid to end the exploitation of children. He can often be found travelling the world, meeting with dignitaries and governments, and talking at the UN. When he's not focused on his charity work, he can be found behind the piano - something he learned from his musical mother at a very young age. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is Masterclass month at Catching Up On Cinema! September is the anniversary month of Catching Up On Cinema, and this year we're celebrating the completion of 5 years of weekly podcasting. For this year's Masterclass, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing all 4 films in Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series of films. This week, Trevor review the last in the series, Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)! After the massive box office success of Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), the series would go on extended hiatus for the first and only time in the history of the franchise, with the series finale, Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) not arriving in theaters until July of '98. Historically known to be a somewhat troubled, and extraordinarily rushed production, Lethal Weapon 4 is a cluttered, but confidently constructed and agile film that skillfully allocates its screen time to giving series fans their money's worth. Much like LW2 and 3, LW4 leans heavily on improvisation, with much of the cast apparently riffing and playing off of Richard Donner's various on-set prompts, though to the credit of the actors and the army of overworked writer's that apparently rewrote the script on the daily, the material feels tighter, more heartfelt, and ultimately more fun than in the previous film. Featuring the most impressive and crisply executed fight choreography and stunt work in the history of the franchise, the film features Jet Li (in a rare villainous turn) in his Hollywood film debut as Wah Sing Ku, as well as host of familiar Asian American stunt and acting talent, with many scenes partially choreographed by Hong Kong legend, Corey Yuen. As was the case with the transition from Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) to Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), Lethal Weapon 4 swaps cinematographer's, this time trading out Jan de Bont, for Andrzej Bartowiak, who had served as de Bont's DP on his feature film debut, Speed (1994), and would go on to direct films himself, many of which featured Jet Li. In addition to the aforementioned Jet Li as the chief antagonist, Wah Sing Ku, LW4 also introduces Chris Rock as Lee Butters, comedic foil for Joe Pesci's returning Leo Getz, and son-in-law to Danny Glover's Roger Murtaugh. Frequently hilarious, and featuring far and away the most energetic, violent, and dynamic action in the series, Lethal Weapon 4 is an excellent sequel, and an exceptional and heartfelt finale to a remarkable franchise. “THEY ARE THE BAD GUYS, WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS. UNDERSTAND?“On this week's episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we talk about a film from a genre we have never covered before. We talk about the 1983 Hong Kong Wuxia classic Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, directed by Hong Kong New Wave filmmaker Tsui Hark, starring Yuen Biao, Adam Cheng, Corey Yuen, Brigitte Lin, Moon Lee, Damian Lau, Mang Hoi, and Sammo Hung. We begin by talking about the story, breaking it down by what we thought of the characters, comedy, the philosophy depicted by the use of the Dual Swords, and whether there can be a connection between the story on screen with the real-life history of Hong Kong under rule of differing governments and how the film can be interpreted as a call for unity. We talk about the depiction of the elders and masters in the film, and how their inability to enact real change has thrown the world into conflict that the new generation must find a resolution for. From there we get into the technical side of the film, from it's impressive use of wire work during the fight scenes, to the in-camera techniques that were used to achieve the amazing choreography, to the film's very dated visual effects (though ambitious may not have aged as well.) But the film's editing becomes a larger focus in the episode, breaking down how the fast-paced editing helps the film, but also might be hindering it when compared to other wuxia films. Lastly, we go into the multiple versions that exist of the film, calling into question whether Tsui Hark ever got the version of the film he wanted. We breakdown the elements that go into a wuxia film, and how well Zu Warriors follows it, and go briefly go into the history of the Hong Kong New Wave cinema, and how Zu Warriors was a huge success for the movement but also a source of inspiration for future filmmakers. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this special episode of Retro Grade Podcast!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

We discuss the infamous stunt doubles, Cyrus admits that Cynthia Rothrock could take him in the fight and we posit that maybe this film would be better without Corey Yuen on screen. In this episode we first take a look at The Killer, a film from 1989 directed by John Woo. It stars Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh, and nobody's motivation is what you think it is. Are people acting out of malice, avarice, guilt or something else? From there we move to 2002 and So Close, directed by Corey Yuen and starring Shu Qi, Zhao Wei and Karen Mok. Once again, everyone has some deeply buried motives. Perhaps they're so deep that they're only released through subtext. You really have to "read between the lines" to understand what people are thinking. Or, you could just listen to this episode and we'll tell you. Both of these episodes are a genuine romp and you'll definitely have fun watching them. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In our next episode we remain in Asia to look at a pair of films that Sean calls "Modern-Day Kurosawa," because they're set in the present day.First it'll be 1949's Stray Dog; then we look at High and Low, from 1963. Did you guess that they both star Toshiro Mifune? It's kind of a sucker bet. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support

His first directorial feature the Paper Tigers is one of my favorite movies I saw this year. It is a hilarious and super fun Kungfu comedy that is perfect for fans of Cobra Kai or No Retreat No Surrender. I loved the hell out of the movie. I reached out to Bao to let him know I loved the movie and he was kind enough to come on the podcast. This is great because we had a fun conversation about filmmaking, growing a first-generation immigrant in Olympia Washington, Growing up making skate and fight videos, making Paper Tigers, and the community that has sprung up around the movie. It is a great movie, and this is a fun and inspiring conversation. There is lots of fun stuff here. Bao was mentored by master action director Corey Yuen. He has written and directed a short film called BOOKIE. Meanwhile, he racist parents are desperately searching for her AWOL sister who might have run off with a nice young Palestinian boy. Blush (aka, the much better title, Barash).     Two of the best action stars of all time together in the second film directed by Hong Kong legend Corey Yuen and produced by Sammo Hung which started an entire subgenre. Tragically, the draws are pushed aside for some of the worst garbage outputted by the painfully unfunny Luck Stars but when allowed to do what they do best, they rival any other of the period and force you to say... Yes, Madam.      All that and the Spencer Mansion collapses on Dave and Tyler's heads while Kevin leaves his noir funk behind for candy colored holiday cheer. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, “Ladies' Night” continues at Catching Up On Cinema as Kyle and Trevor sit down to review Corey Yuen's Yes, Madam! (1985). Produced by Sammo Hung, the film serves as an early showcase for the martial arts capabilities of it's dual leading ladies', Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock. Though the women carry the bulk of the action spectacle, the majority of the film's runtime is actually devoted to Tsui Hark, John Shum and Mang Hoi's farcical escapades as a trio of immoral grifters that get in over their heads. Colorful, and unapologetically silly, the film is an outstanding, if grossly uneven example of 80's Hong Kong cinema. Cynthia Rothrock - the undisputed 'Queen of martial arts movies' - never anticipated a career as an action film star. The Scranton-raised martial artist initially headed west in search of furthering her kung fu knowledge, often competing in men's divisions to become a national champion, and touring the world in the process. It was a portentous audition for the Hong Kong action director Corey Yuen which would bring her fame and fortune; an audition which would catch the attention of Sammo Hung, who cast Cynthia in her first breakout film, 'Police Assassins' (1985), alongside another relative newcomer, Michelle Yeoh - and the rest, as they say, is history. Although, not quite, because Cynthia's journey in the film business has been full of highs and lows; huge successes, and false starts. Her three years in Hong Kong would produce undoubtedly her best on-screen fight work - a westerner who became the headline act in a new sub-genre of high-energy, stunt-filled fight films predominantly led by women - before success in the English-language Hong Kong-produced 'China O'Brien' films would see her travel back to the USA and into the highly lucrative world of straight-to-video actioners. She is, quite simply, a trailblazer - a performer who became a bankable star in both the east and the west at a time when the industry, and the martial arts genre in particular, was dominated by men. As a forerunner to Hollywood's pursuit in achieving greater gender parity in the action film world, Cynthia's legacy cannot be underestimated. Even now, aged 64, she shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to train, travel the world, appear in movies and teach martial arts. On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are oiling ourselves up and driving around some ladies in Louis Leterrier and Corey Yuen's film from 2002, The Transporter. Oh, we're also kicking some serious ass. Did I really say “oiling up”? Yeah, of course I did. Don't you know what kind of film this masterpiece of cinema is? Don't you understand that it stars the irrepressible Jason Statham, England's greatest export since, I don't know, Harry Potter and the forced colonization of a decent amount of the world? Don't you know it's produced by the utter madman known as Luc Besson? This movie has all of that. It also has a kidnapped Asian woman who is quickly attracted to her white knight savior and his pecs of titanium. It's got every French film stereotype that can be fit into a film of this length, minus, of course, the baguette eating (although maybe that was happening in the background somewhere). It's got an intense-looking and very rich Asian man pulling the strings above everything. You can rest assured that he's menacing. This movie has every damn thing! Is there a troubling amount of the wrong kind of Asian representation in this film? Who the hell cares, apparently! This was the early 2000's! Of course, our main actress is going to want to jump Statham within a day or two of meeting him. Who can blame her? I mean, I'm dead serious about Statham's pecs. Sterling titanium, they are. I don't know, a white guy is writing these words. Perhaps it's not my place to decide what sort of representation is right or wrong for people of Asian descent. There are more and far better people than I that can comment on this subject. Those voices are out there. Go read a book, why don't ya? What can I comment on? Well, this is our b-movie bonus episode, and it's quite a blast, all things considered. There's a reason they made two additional Statham-led Transporter films. This is the sort of breezy, action-packed movie that filmmakers excelled at making in the early part of this century. There's very little substance to be found, but what it lacks in story and character development it makes up for in face-punching and skydiving onto movie semi trucks. Yeah, of course that happens! If you didn't think it would, then you just don't know what to expect from a film featuring Statham's oily pecs. And no, I don't have an unhealthy obsession with that man's chest. You have the problem! Will The Transporter be brilliant, a blunder, or a flunder? Listen on to find out! To celebrate the man, the myth, and the legend, Not A Bomb is discussing 1988’s action/comedy - Dragons Forever. Known as the last film of “The Three Dragons”, Dragons Forever was seen as a box office failure when compared to the trio’s other films and didn’t live up to the studio’s expectations. Also, audiences weren’t crazy about Sammo, Jackie and Yuen playing against their traditional film personas.

On his very first day working on a Hong Kong action film set, Jude Poyer saw someone rushed to hospital when a stunt went badly wrong. Instead of seeing this as a bad omen, Jude - who had relocated to Hong Kong at the age of 18 to follow his dreams of working in martial arts movies - stayed in Hong Kong, where he would be based for the next eight years, working with some of the biggest names in kung fu cinema: people like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Jet Li, Corey Yuen, Tony Ching, Stephen Tung Wei and Vincent Zhao. The decline of Hong Kong cinema saw Jude return home to the United Kingdom, where his credits as a stunt coordinator, action director, fight choreographer and stunt performer now number in the hundreds; from Free Fire to Final Score, Star Wars to Transformers. In more recent years, it has been his work with the Welsh-born director of The Raid, Gareth Evans, which has seen him operate in an entirely new and refreshing context, particularly for UK independent cinema; from the twisted gothic horror of Apostle (2018) to the upcoming HBO series, Gangs of London. Their new film together, Havoc, is currently in pre-production and will see Evans return to the type of action which made him an international name. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss the enduring legacy and power of classic Hong Kong action films, how to sustain a career in the stunt industry, the ups and downs of working in the UK, and just how the heck they made that relentless gun-fu church fight in Kingsman.

Mentored early on by master action director Corey Yuen, Bao was instilled with an approach to action that doesn't rely solely on spectacle, but also draws on story and character. His editing credits include 'Cho Lon,' one of Southeast Asia's highest-budgeted action blockbusters, and 'Jackpot,' a heartfelt comedy selected as Vietnam's official entry to the 2016 Oscars for Best Foreign Film. His first directorial feature 'The Paper Tigers' has garnered praise from Collider as "an impressive feature debut with confident command of the narrative and action alike, it's an absolutely lovely time at the movies."
