This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about our favourite songs of 1986, including thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock and loads more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - a-ha, The Art Of Noise ft Max Headroom, Big Black, The Bolshoi, Bon Jovi, Billy Bragg, Stan Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crowded House, Cutting Crew, Europe, The Go-Betweens, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, The Housemartins, Hüsker Dü, In The Nursery, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Kenny Loggins, Merzbow, Metallica, New Order, Public Image Ltd, R.E.M., Lionel Richie, Shub Niggurath, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slayer, The Smiths, & They Might Be Giants.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SmV87RMDnpidlUpn4m7lU?si=Ssrrhy8iRtCgFXSP9-QXug&pi=p67BZNXETwqB5Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay are the American sh*theads who make chicks with bricks while talking about action classic, 'Bloodsport.' Bombay breaks records while kicking things off in record time with a story about when he visited Hong Kong and had a surreal experience at a hooker bar. Then the fellas show what the hell a dim mak is, as they fearlessly enter an underground tunnel before discussing the movie that turned Jean-Claude Van Damme into a star during the VHS era. The guys debate if young Frank Dux was mentally slow, or just a clueless sports fan who loves Giants, and Andy recalls a time he stole a katana sword of his own. There's also plenty of discussion about real life shyster Frank Dux who parlayed a whimsical tale about an illegal martial arts tournament — and a few purchased trophies as proof of his exploits — into Cannon releasing a film based on his story. Plus, why did the film fictional Dux stay up all night banging a girl he just met before the biggest fight of his life? All of this, and of course the boys have to talk about Paul Hertzog's dreamy score coupled with Stan Bush's power ballads. This episode was recorded to honor you, shidoshi.

Your Popzara Pals celebrate 40 years of Autobots and Decepticons waging war across the galaxy - and our imaginations - as our own Cybertronian warriors Nate Evans, Chris Mitchell, and editor-in-disguise Sebastian Stoddard assemble in epic cybernetic roundtable chat about two animated features that perfectly everything we love about Optimus Prime, Megatron, and the rest: 1986's Transformers: The Movie and 2024's Transformers One. Listen as the gang discusses how Hasbro and Marvel were able to (literally) transform a product designed to sell toys to children into one of the most beloved and resilient franchises in history - and how it took veterans from Pixar to restore luster to a premise that was starting to feel a little rusty. Listen further as they explore how Transformers has upended expectations for decades, how a generation of latchkey kids came to accept death and loss, Orson Welles' journey from Rosebud to Unicron, what the Michael Bay films got right, how Chris Hemswoth honors Peter Cullen, possibly the most quintessentially 1980s soundtrack ever, the surprising connections between Transformers and Sylvester Stallone, the genius of AOR King (and Popzara fan) Stan Bush, and more. It's an episode beyond good, beyond evil, and beyond your wildest imagination.

I lived through the decade of Michael Bay's destruction porn lens and to see a Transformers movie that's a thrilling and fun sci-fi adventure while also emotionally resonant and honest? AND establishes lore that helps me appreciate the cartoon even more so? It's a stellar feat, a glorious return for the franchise that brings to mind other seminal films from my youth - X-MEN, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT and ANTZ. We are kicking the new year off with a trip down memory lane, as we have some nostalgic childhood picks for you! Samantha recommends Lois Lowry's novel The Giver, Indy revisits the animated Transformers movie, and we get ready to think pink with next week's big watch; Barbie!   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa     The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel written by Lois Lowry, set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. In the novel, the society has taken away pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. In an effort to preserve order, the society also lacks any color, climate, terrain, and a true sense of equality. The protagonist of the story, a 12-year-old boy named Jonas, is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness. Jonas struggles with concepts of the new emotions and things introduced to him, and whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is possible to have one without the other. The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. The Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 animated science fiction action film based on the Transformers television series. It was released in North America on August 8, 1986, and in the United Kingdom on December 12, 1986.[8] It was co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the television series. The screenplay was written by Ron Friedman, who created Bionic Six a year later. The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, John Moschitta Jr., Scatman Crothers, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Orson Welles, who died 10 months before the film's release, in his final film role. The soundtrack comprises electronic music composed by Vince DiCola and songs from rock and heavy metal acts including Stan Bush and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated films and specials. The film stars Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the pair on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis. The supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.

Originally released June 2018: The Transformers: The Movie is a six million dollar animated film that came out in 1986, co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the original The Transformers television series on which the film was based. The origins of that cartoon series was a line of toys produced by Hasbro, based on designs which originated in Japan, vehicles which transformed into robots. The film spawned an amazing hard rock soundtrack which is the focus of today's episode. On this episode you will hear conversations BJ had with Stan Bush, who wrote and sang the first single from the soundtrack, "The Touch," Vince Dicola, who wrote the song "Dare," also sung by Stan Bush (Vince also wrote the score for the film), and members from the three bands featured on the soundtrack: Jerry Best, bassist from Lion, who recorded a heavy metal version of The Transformers theme, Ernie Petrangelo, guitarist and songwriter from Rhode Island metal band NRG, responsible for the killer track "Instruments of Destruction," and Larry Gillstrom, guitarist from Canadian heavy metal band Kick Axe, who were credited as Spectre General for the soundtrack, they contributed two songs, "Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way" and "Hunger." Hello and welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, prepare to be transformed as I continue my mini-series entitled “TV Goes To The Movies” and now explore the music for THE TRANSFORMERS franchise. As before, my focus is musically what was or was not carried over from the television episodes of a particular series to its respective theatrical feature, such as the main TV theme or scoring style.   During its near 40 year history, from the original 1984 syndicated cartoon series, to the animated and live action movies, the Japanese-only series and more, music for the THE TRANSFORMERS has been remarkably varied. The vocal and score tracks have often reflected current or trendy musical approaches, leading to elements of lush symphonic strains, synth pop, hard rock and jazzy funk all being heard in various incarnations. Now, hold on to your crankshafts and let's transform and roll out!    Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00:00 THE TRANSFORMERS (US, 1984 cartoon series, theme by Anne Bryant & Ford Kinder, score by Johnny Douglas and Robert J. The Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 animated science fiction action film based on the Transformers television series. It was released in North America on August 8, 1986, and in the United Kingdom on December 12, 1986.[8] It was co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the television series. The screenplay was written by Ron Friedman, who created The Bionic Six a year later. The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, John Moschitta Jr., Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker, and saw the final film roles for Orson Welles who died before the film's release and Scatman Crothers who died after the release of the film.[9] The soundtrack comprises electronic music composed by Vince DiCola and songs from rock and heavy metal acts including Stan Bush and "Weird Al" Yankovic. The story is set in 2005, 20 years after the TV series' second season.[10] After a Decepticon assault devastates Autobot City, Optimus Prime wins a deadly one-on-one duel with Megatron, but ultimately sustains fatal injuries in the encounter. With Megatron gravely injured, the Decepticons are forced to retreat, saving the Autobots. The Autobots are hunted across the galaxy by Unicron, a planet-sized Transformer intending to consume Cybertron and who transfigures Megatron to become the enslaved Galvatron. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wvuncommonplace/message

Have you ever been without something or someone for so long that you ache from places deep within yourself? And when you finally become reacquainted, the crushing realization that reality will never live up to expectation washes over every fiber of your being and leaves you a convulsing, sobbing waste of human life? Well put on some of that extra runny mascara and squeeze into your party dresses, because after a longer than anticipated hiatus due to all sorts of disasters only a middle aged family man would ever have to deal with, Jay and Benny are back! And what better way to celebrate our return than with an absolute dumpster fire of an animated movie, based on a flaming crap heap of an 80's cartoon, which spawned frustratingly inarticulate action figures, all of which Benny somehow loves more than life itself? Transformers - the 1986 cartoon, not the abominations that Michael Bay crapped out after a night of shooting motor oil into his genitals - really is a movie from our youths that should never have existed. From half the Autobots we grew up loving being gang executed in the first 5 minutes, to Orson Welles gasping out Unicron lines while being resuscitated on a hospital gurney, this movie is a shining example of the power of nostalgia. Sure, Optimus Prime rocket jet-leaping into battle and “arise Rodimus Prime” are goosebump-inducing moments, but this is one of those movies that we love solely because of the time in our lives that it represents. When we had all the time in the world. When our biggest concern was having to eat an extra veggie for dinner. When our main sorrow came from having to put Optimus Prime and Megatron down for dinner. All of those moments before growing up, getting a job and raising a family absolutely annihilated our wills to live. It sure as heck isn't because this is a good movie, because it absolutely is not. Transform and roll out with us, and watch this movie through the lenses of a 9 year old as we dive back into our childhoods and talk about things like: Can this movie's cast calm the #$%@$ down? Orson Welles, Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Casey Casem...say what you will about the movie, but the production team didn't skimp on the talent We feel as though there was a better way to introduce new characters than having most of the ones we loved getting unceremoniously gunned down in cold blood. Ironhide getting a Megatron cannon to the skull? Cold blooded While we're on the subject, it isn't as if they committed genocide so that awesome new characters could take their place. Is Arcee better than Ratchet? Is Kup better than Ironhide? Should Blur even be allowed to exist in this world? We think not Jay can kiss Benny's posterior; Stan Bush wrote the soundtrack to our lives. I dare you to play Dare and not rock the heck out This entire mess of a movie produced two moments that you will Youtube again and again. Optimus exploding into the air to gun down Decepticons is the animated kids movie equivalent of Rambo opening up a 50 cal on Myanmar soldiers Ultra Magnus is far more of a repugnant coward than we remember him being. From aggressively not caring about comrades presumably dying, to clawing away at the Matrix while he's gunned down into pieces, he's sniveling and worthless Most of the side stories are completely pointless. The ocean world gives us an annoying child to entertain Hot Rod, Kup, and Grimlock, and the junk planet gives us horrible looking robots who conveniently have interstellar spaceships ready to launch. Yes, we get it...here are shark and motorcycle robots for you to consume, little piglets The final fight between Hot Rod and Galvatron/Unicron is cheesy, terribly animated, and makes no sense. It's also one of Benny's favourite moments in all of movie history, so take that however you like

[GROUP PICK] "You got the touch... You got the power!!!!... YEAH!...." The year is 1986, the golden age of inspirational movie montage music, and a little television show/toy line for children was about to grow the fuck up. After two seasons and a couple of successful lines of toys, Hasbro and Marvel were ready to take "The Transformers" to the silver screen, and they pulled off quite the project. With "The Transformers: The Movie," they brought in some huge talent, such as Leonard Nemoy, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Judd Nelson, and Orson Welles to name a few, and wrote a gritty space opera that was somewhere between "Heavy Metal" and "Star Wars..." ...oh, that, and a badass hair metal/synth wave electronic powerhouse soundtrack! Every track just drips with pure 80s sound, with Stan Bush on the power ballads, NRG (later known as Damn Cheetah) & Spectre General lending some heavy hitting metal tunes, and Lion creating possibly the best recreation of a children's cartoon theme ever. Even the brooding synth score, done by Vince DiCola is dynamic and emotional, and gives the movie more gravitas than you would expect for one based on children's toys. However, even with all that and the inclusion of Weird Al Yankovic's much revered classic "Dare to Be Stupid," "The Transformers: The Movie" was a box office failure, making not even $2 million opening weekend, and caused Hasbro to rethink their involvement in future big screen releases (also, weirdly, it was Orson Welles' last film). Has Michael Bay's tyrannical, Unicron-like grip on the live-action Transformers universe finally come to an end? God, we hope so. In this episode of Unfunny Nerd Tangent, rather than complain for two hours about the current state of Transformers movies, we instead decided to incorporate all of our favorite things from the franchise, dating back to 1984, including the G1 cartoon, the toys, the comics and the classic 1986 animated movie. We even recruited some expert guests to help us! But eventually, yes, we did talk about the Bay films. And yes, of course, Tim tried to defend them. We love you, Tim. So sit back, open the Matrix, light your darkest hour and enjoy Episode 22: Transformers. Hosted by: ‘Gregarious Prime' Greig (@GreigT13). Featuring: ‘Omega SuperJew' Jared Robinovitz (@Superjew75), ‘Wheelie's Only Fan' Tim Agne (@timagne) & ‘Pipe-Bombshell' Bryan Gregston (@guitarsalad). Special Guests: Yoshi (@yousephtanha) & ‘Big C' Charles (@cpshelton) from the Transmissions Podcast (@trnsmissions). Music by Stan Bush.
