Gratitude and Grumbling

Be grateful. Do not grumble. We know this. Yet, many of us struggle. Many of us would say that gratitude doesn't come naturally to us. Not all the time, anyway. Too often, we find ourselves wrestling with ingratitude. We find ourselves grumbling. But when we grumble, what's really going on? More often than not, there's a lot going on inside of our hearts. Maybe it's discontentment; comparison; envy; jealousy; self-hatred. These deep heart issues seep out into our thoughts and in our words--we grumble. In this episode, we talk about what grumbling reveals about our hearts. We talk about how the gospel confronts our grumbling, and how we can be people of gratitude.      What does gratitude look like? (5:43) What is grumbling? (9:13) What's going on in our hearts when we grumble? (14:21) We grumble because: Entitlement (19:22) Discontentment (21:11) Suffering (23:01) The impact of grumbling on our hearts. What Does it Mean to Fear the Lord?

Daily Grace

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2021 50:37

All throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, we read that God's people should “fear the Lord”. We also are told in many verses to “fear not” or “do not fear”. Fear is a hard emotion for us to understand as it is; the differences in these verses can make it extra confusing! But because the fear of the Lord is a topic woven throughout all of Scripture, we know it's important. So we have to ask: what is the fear of the Lord? How does it impact our real, everyday lives? And if it's a good thing, how do we grow in our fear of the Lord?   Many conversations on this topic simplify the fear of the Lord to awe and reverence, and that's not wrong. But this is such a tremendous calling for believers that it's worth digging deeper. Come join our conversation!    Resources mentioned in this episode: Prayers for My Children Verse Card Set by The Daily Grace Co. We all complain, right? So what do we do with verses like “do all things without grumbling” (Phil 2:14)? Does this mean we're supposed to gloss over our frustrations and just smile all the time? Or is there a way to complain without sinning? Today, we talk about the difference between godly lament and sinful complaining. The pattern of lament actually includes complaint; in our lament, God uses our complaints to knit our hearts to His. Lauren helps us see how this can play out in our everyday lives.     Connect with us: www.dailygracepodcast.com www.thedailygraceco.com https://www.facebook.com/thedailygraceco/ https://www.instagram.com/thedailygraceco/   Questions? Daring Greatly Podcast with Tshepo Mantjé

Let's reflect on the year that was. However, considering the challenges of the year - the perspective this episode takes is that of gratitude. Research in Positive Psychology has found that gratitude and happiness are always strongly correlated. Gratitude moves people to experience more positive emotions, to thoroughly enjoy the good experiences, better their health, face adversity, and develop and maintain relationships of strength, which in turn makes you happier. In this episode I have invited dear friends to share with us what, in spite of the challenges of 2020, they are most grateful for. My intention is to create space for gratitude. My hope is that as we recognize our own blessings, hopefully you listening will notice the good in your own life and we can exit 2020 a little bit happier. Sometimes it feels like “mom world” is another planet. A nursing shield? An all-terrain stroller? Funny-shaped food? It seems easier to build friendships with women in our season of life, but the gospel gives us a bigger picture of community. In this episode, Emily and Laura interview Elizabeth Woodson about building flourishing friendships with women in other seasons of life—particularly singles. Elizabeth is a Bible teacher who writes, teaches, and helps to develop leaders at The Village Church and serves as the Director of Resources for the Sparrow Conference. Christian moms and singles can have the most important thing in common: our faith in Christ. So press in a little deeper with a woman in a different season and enjoy God’s gift of community.   VIEW TRANSCRIPT   MENTIONED ON THE SHOW: Elizabeth Woodson’s website Elizabeth on Instagram & Twitter The Village Church Sparrow Conference 2019 RELATED ARTICLES, RESOURCES, AND CONTENT: Related R|M resources: “God’s Grace Beyond our ‘Mom Tribes,’" - Abby Hummel, Risen Motherhood “The Gospel Comes with a House Key,” - Rosaria Butterfield, Risen Motherhood “When We’re Offended: The Cost of Being a Peacemaker,” - Lauren Weir, Risen Motherhood “Members, Not Measures: A Call to Own One Another’s Joys and Sorrows,” Abbey Wedgeworth, Risen Motherhood “Moms Make Peace Through Christ,” - Emily Jensen, Risen Motherhood Ep. 38, Friendship & Motherhood - Risen Motherhood Ep. 43, Serving Others Right Where You’re At - Risen Motherhood Ep. 55, Hospitality in the Little Years - Risen Motherhood Ep. 65, Finding Your Tribe: Momma, Who is Your Primary Community? - Risen Motherhood Around the internet: Messy Beautiful Friendships: Finding and Nurturing Deep and Lasting Relationships, - Christine Hoover Life Together, - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community, - Brett McCracken “6 Costs of Real Friendship,” - Jen Thorn, Christianity Today “Loneliness, Friendship, and the Goodness of God,” - Melissa Kruger, TGC “Woman Enough for Friendship,” - Jasmine Holmes, Fathom Magazine Ep. 17, By Faith with Christine Hoover: On Friendships for Moms with Emily & Laura - By Faith RM APPLY QUESTIONS It’s great to have a close group of mom friends, but God also designed Christian community to include a variety of ages, experiences, and gifts. Women in different seasons of life can have flourishing friendships if we’re willing to find common interests, have honest conversations, and build on our shared love of Christ. We’re made to be in community and to encourage our sisters-in-Christ, and that happens across every season of life. Do you have friendships with women who are in different seasons of life than you? If so, how can you further invest in these friendships? If not, can you think of any women who share similar interests with you in other areas? Consider inviting one of them to join you for coffee, bread baking, running, etc. There are common threads in all our lives. We all experience pain, loss, and difficulty; and we all experience joy, thankfulness, and hope. The gospel meets us where we are in our different situations and enables us to mourn and rejoice with one another. How is a shared love of Christ the foundation for friendship? How does it connect you to other sisters-in-Christ who may be experiencing different life events than you? Moms and singles can be tempted to run away from hard relationships, but God calls us to consider one another as more important than ourselves. What would it look like to approach a difficult friend with grace? How can you find out how to love that person well? If we want to be true friends, we have to open up our lives to others—which means opening our homes too. What are your expectations for the “right conditions” to be hospitable? Are these biblical requirements or heart idols? How can you open up space this week to invite a single woman over? All women are told to have spiritual children in the faith regardless of our life seasons. We’re to steward the information God gives us by pouring into a younger sister-in-Christ. Is discipleship a regular part of your life? How can you make time for it and who might you “do life” with? FOR MORE: To subscribe: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and subscribe. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Lauren Weir on the topic of asking intentional questions. Y’all know that question-asking is one of my favorite topics, and let me be the first to say that Lauren absolutely knocked it out of the park. We talked about everything from how we can ask intentional questions in our study of the Word to how we can use intentional questions to know and love one another better.   I really believe this conversation will help you in your endeavor to know and love others with the hope of loving them, enjoying them, and leading them to Jesus. So you’ll know her a little better, Lauren is a wife and mother and lover of Jesus with a heart that beats to communicate the goodness and glory of God. Her love for God's Word and discipleship led her to pursue a Master of Biblical Counseling degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is the owner of Words Worth Noting, a ministry dedicated to providing resources and cultivating life through the beauty of Scripture. Lauren loves counseling, writing, creating, and discipling as much as she loves getting to spend a whole lot of time with her little girl.   I genuinely hope this conversation encourages you to continue growing the skill of asking intentional questions, not only of others, but of yourself and most importantly, in your study of God’s Word.   LAUREN’S RESOURCES Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp X Ray Questions by David Powlison How to Study the Bible PDF by Words Worth Noting (free!)   LAUREN’S SIMPLE JOYS Her daughter Her writer’s group Friends to spend time with day to day   DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Who do you know that is great at asking intentional questions?
