There are many steps that go into building start-ups, with legal work being a huge component in the foundations of their success. As legal reaches more into the digital age, transparency with services and costs is needed, especially for these types of brands. Atrium, a tech-enabled law firm for high growth companies, is providing that need. Founded by serial entrepreneur Justin Kan, Atrium is in the hands of a CEO who has a history of successful start-ups. Key takeaways: Atrium is building a tech-enabled law firm that is initially serving start-ups but has even larger ambitions. One of the many ways Atrium is improving the legal experience is by switching to predictable monthly subscriptions as opposed to lumpy, project-based billing. Atrium already has hundreds of clients including the scooter company, Bird, our former InnovAItors podcast guest, Sift, and direct consumer contact lens business, Simple Contacts. In common usage, a "philistine" is a derogatory term for an anti-intellectual materialist. The word derives from the ancient Middle Eastern Philistines, a people best known as an early geopolitical enemy of the Israelites in the Hebrew Bible. The historical Philistines were far from "philistines" (note the lowercase P). The circumstance by which the latter derives from the former can be traced back to a murder in the 17th century German city of Jena. (Yes, actually.) In July 2014, FSU law professor Dan Markel was shot and killed in the driveway of his home in Tallahassee, Florida. Investigators immediately suspected that the family of Dan’s ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, was behind the murder, but would they be able to prove it? After two years of investigation, three arrests were made in the case - Luis Rivera, Sigfredo Garcia, and Katherine Magbanua. The Prosecution’s theory is that the Adelson family hired Katherine, who was dating Wendi’s brother Charlie, to orchestrate the murder. Katherine then enlisted the help of the father of her children, Sigfredo, and his friend Luis. In September 2019, Sigfredo and Katherine went to trial for the murder, with Luis Rivera was the star witness against them. Would prosecutors be able to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, or would the defenses of Sigfredo and Katherine prove that they were being railroaded? We kick off this episode with some awe and maybe a tiny bit of lamenting that our kids are officially licensed drivers, which is totally surreal but at least gives us opportunities to watch them swing and catch their keys a lot while they contemplate where they'd like to go next. As teenagers do. We also talk about a few books I've read lately, some books Melanie is about to read, and some shows that have grabbed our attention. We have a lengthy discussion about this last season of The Real Housewives of New York City, and all I know to say about that is please don't judge us for having such sophisticated television taste. Not to be overly WOMP WOMP, but the first part of this episode is about as low-key as you'll ever hear us. That's because about 17-ish minutes after we started recording, we lost our connection, and the files with our audio disappeared right before our eyes. This is where we would love to blame the website we use to record, but the truth is we don't have any way of knowing exactly what happened. We just thought that our enthusiastic discussion about the InstantPot was lost in an internet graveyard forever. So. We tried our best to rebound as we started recording all over again. It's safe to say we were weary. BUT WAIT! Our sad tale has a redemptive arc! After I started editing the WOMP WOMP part of the episode, I opened the website where we record. It was a fit of optimism, but I thought maybe - MAYBE - the audio would be there. And do you know what? IT WAS. So you'll hear Discouraged Us for the first 40-ish minutes, but then you'll hear Upbeat Us for the last 15 or so minutes, and DIDN'T THAT ALL WORK OUT AT LEAST SORT OF? Hope y'all enjoy. A week ago, the Wall Street Journal published an article that alleged a high level of disfunction in Apple’s design department, from Tim Cook’s relationship with Jony Ive, to how Jony Ive ran — or didn’t run — the design organization, and how all of that led to Jony’s departure.
