What if the very place you went for safety, love, and divine wisdom turned out to be the scene of the crime? Today we're diving headfirst into the world of spiritual abuse. This week, I'm joined by Katherine Spearing, founder of Tears of Eden, trauma recovery practitioner, and author of a new book, A Thousand Tiny Paper Cuts. If you've ever been told that “God doesn't want your happiness, He wants your holiness” while you were slowly disintegrating inside, well, friend, you're in for a ride. Buckle up, because we're talking:Why spiritual abuse is often so subtle you won't realize you're bleeding out until you're halfway through a panic attackHow high-control religious environments get you to abuse yourself (sick, right?)The toxic theology that turns God into a cranky toddler with a lightning boltKey Takeaways:Spiritual abuse is real, complex, and often normalized. Just because it's subtle doesn't mean it's not wrecking your soul. You're not wrong for wanting peace, freedom, and autonomy. That's not “selfish.” That's survival.Religious trauma isn't just in your head. It's in your nervous system, and it needs gentle care to heal. You get to get your mail from God. Not from your pastor, your husband, or some elder board in polyester pants.Patriarchy is the backbone of most spiritual abuse. If your theology only benefits dudes, it's not the gospel, it's a con. There's a whole beach of freedom outside that toxic church sandbox. And God's not mad you left.Read the full show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Grab a copy of Katherine's book, A Thousand Tiny Paper CutsConnect with Katherine on InstagramHop on Katherine's mailing list and get some free resources while you're on her site. AI coding assistants promise to write your code, speed up your sprint, and maybe even make engineers obsolete. But what if the people building with them every day see something very different? In this special Halloween edition of CRAFTED. — which also marks the show's third anniversary! — a masked CTO shares what he can't say publicly: that these tools are powerful, but insidious. In his view, coding assistants are great for auto-complete, but they can't do what a human engineer does. He says they're terrible at starting from scratch and will often suggest code that “works in vacuum”, but not in context. And because AI can write so much code, so quickly, it's hard to catch errors. In short, he sees an increase in short term velocity, at the expense of increased defects and an increasing dependency on systems that are untrustworthy. I want to emphasize that this episode features the experience of one very experienced person. There are obviously others who disagree, who say AI coding agents are incredible, so long as they're managed well. However, there are also an increasing number of people questioning the sustainability of coding agents — they're incredibly expensive to run — and also how good they are in the first place. For example Andrej Karpathy, the guy who literally coined the phrase "vibe coding" and was early at OpenAI and Tesla, just said publicly on Dwarkesh Podcast that the path to AI agents is going to be a lot slower than people in the industry think it will be. He said coding agents are "not that good at writing code that's never been written before" and that there is too much hype right now about where AI really is, with people in the industry, quote "trying to pretend like this is amazing, when it's not." And he said: "My Claude Code or Codex still feels like this elementary-grade student." Today's guest agrees with Karpathy on a lot of this. Our guest has worked at startups, scale-ups, and big tech companies you've definitely heard of and today he's at a very AI-forward company and using AI coding tools every day. Enjoy this special episode of CRAFTED.! ---And pretty please...!Share with a friend! Word of mouth is how podcasts grow!Subscribe to the newsletter at https://www.crafted.fmShare your feedback! I'm actively speaking to potential sponsors for 2026 episodes. Let's talk!Get psyched!… There are some big updates to the show in 2026!---Key Quotes03:16 The myth of AI replacement: “The idea that AI can actually supplant a software engineer in their current role is basically nonsense.”06:29 Why AI struggles without human input: “If you remove the human engineer from the equation, there's no place to start from. The AI does not do well when you're starting from scratch because it doesn't have the real-world context or the continuous learning required to make that system better.”12:21: The illusion of speed: “Coding assistants help you generate code very quickly. There's an illusion that your velocity increases. What actually happens is you're just shipping more bugs to production.”13:30 More code than humans can review: “AI generates so much code that no human can keep that context in their head and review it in a meaningful way. At some point you just have to trust — but who are you trusting? You're trusting the AI, and the AI cannot be trusted.”14:02 AI & Junior Engineer Hiring: “The narrative that hiring trends have anything to do with AI is absurd. It's not that AI is replacing junior engineers — it's that companies are running lean and don't have the bandwidth to train them.”15:42: Where the AI Bulls and Bears Differ: “Whereas we see flawed systems that aren't ready for primetime [...] they view this as ‘oh, that's, that's insignificant. They will get better almost immediately. It's not a big deal.' But we've been repeating this cycle for years at this point.”19:50 Where AI Excels: “Where review and revise are part of the process already, that's a really good place for generative AI because you already have a human in the loop.”21:02: What builders need to unlearn “To the extent that people think these things are thinking or reasoning or on any path to AGI at all — they should discard that. These models don't think. They're very sophisticated pattern-matching machines, and that's really it.”

Day 25 – Episode 175: Insidious (2010)On Day 25 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, I'm flying solo with Insidious (2010) — a film I like and respect well enough, even if I sometimes mix it up with The Conjuring. And honestly, who could blame me? With James Wan directing, Leigh Whannell writing, and Patrick Wilson starring, the overlap is real. Still, Insidious stands on its own as a stylish, eerie descent into the world of astral projection and haunted dreams. The film's use of sound, pacing, and surreal visuals make it a standout in modern horror — even if the infamous red-faced demon will forever remind me a little too much of Darth Maul.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:
In this episode I will be sharing my thoughts on the Insidious series, discussing the first three films in detail. I reflects on his personal experiences with energy levels, gym motivation, and the excitement of podcasting. The conversation transitions into a critique of the Insidious movies, highlighting the repetitive nature of the plot and the lack of character development. expressing my fears about watching the later films in the series and shares humorous insights about parenting and horror movie tropes.Tik Tok: Andrewcrews4Twitter: Nicetown finestTwitch: Twitch.tv/nicetown_finest27https://www.patreon.com/Crewsinpodcast
In Episode 99 of So, You Like Horror?, host Jake Dante is joined by Mannuel C. as they dive into Sinister (2012)... one of the most terrifying supernatural horror films of the 2010s. Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke, Sinister follows true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt as he uncovers a series of horrifying Super 8 home movies tied to a pagan deity known as Bughuul. The discussion breaks down the film's haunting imagery, disturbing sound design, and the psychological unraveling that makes it “scientifically the scariest movie ever made.”We explore how Sinister compares to Insidious and The Conjuring, analyze themes of obsession, ambition, and moral decay, and ask whether the true horror lies in the demon or in Ellison himself. From cursed films to corrupted innocence, this episode is a deep dive into the darkness that keeps horror fans awake at night.Thank you, everyone, for your support. Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are being haunted by some really creepy looking dark spirits. We watched the 2011 film from James Wan, Insidious. After nearly a whole month of watching people move into houses that end up being super haunted, We are beginning to wonder if homeownership is really for us. The risk of being possessed is just too great!Oh, you think we are overreacting? Just give these movies a watch and then tell us if we are blowing things out of proportion. Mike does what he can to remind the fellas that spooky season movies are supposed to be actually spooky with: Insidious.
Fresh off of Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas we get an in depth look into the award winning film The Vile with director Majid Al Ansari. The Vile is brought to you by the producers of films such as Insidious, Late Night With The Devil, Weapons, and gave us such a unique experience into the world of genre films with this Emirati feature. With the foundation of drama, polygamous relationship, and the effects it has on families in Muslim culture this could have been a movie on it's own without the horror elements, but as Majid sprinkles in black magic and supernatural forces around the events, he turns this riveting family drama into an even wilder ride. Was so cool to pick his brain and get even more layers on how this came to be and how this film is going against the grain of how the majority of movies are made in his country.

In this episode the FM3 pay respects to the one and only lying ass Warren's with a little chat about the newest installment in the Conjuring universe "Last Rites". It's that time of year again when Brian and Josh can't remember if it is a Conjuring movie or a Insidious movie and tbh do they even care? At this point, our brave heroes feel like they are living in a groundhog's day of endless ghost cliches with no end in sight. Luckily this is the last one...right?
We start with a look at this weekend's box office. We start with the power of anime, before moving on to the Warrens. But the main topic is Stephen King. The renowned author is no stranger to box office flops. So why is everyone blaming the performance of The Long Walk recent comments he made. It is not like he has every been quiet about his political views? Also, who is responsible for more Insidious sequels? We have some some crazy things on our humble little podcast. There have been plenty of films that have given zero fucks about who they offend and what lines they cross. But we have never seen anything like 2006's Werewolf in a Women's Prison. For those thinking the title is a metaphor for a much deeper story, you will be disappointed. This is very much a case of what you see is what you get.And what you see is a lot of naked women. How much? For the first time, it was enough for one of us to say it was too much. Not on any moral grounds; it was just more bare breasts than a person wants to see in one movie. Between all the bare flesh, there are some awesome kills, questionable music choices, a werewolf that is simultaneously cool and awful looking, and Patton Oswalt's wife.It has been a rough year for Blumhouse. It once seemed like they could release anything and people would go see it. This year has been one box office failure after another, including this week's feature presentation, Drop. The premise is a neat one. A woman on a blind date starts receiving mysterious air drops that command her to do horrible things or in son will die. The execution, not so much.It is a message movie that makes its message unimportant, a character study that leaves you not caring about its main character, and a thriller that is not so thrilling. There are some odd directorial choices, with some that are really good. But the ones that do not land make the movie look cheap. And the ending brings closure, but is not satisfying. In the late 2010s, a group of sheriffs out of Pasco County, Florida, believed they could predict crime. The Sheriff's Department there had piloted a program called “Intelligence-Led Policing” and the program would allegedly analyze disparate points of data to identify would-be criminals. But in reality, the program didn't so much predict crime, as it did make criminals out of everyday people, including children. High schoolers' grades were fed into the Florida program, along with their attendance records and their history with “office discipline.” And after the “Intelligence-Led Policing” service analyzed the data, it instructed law enforcement officers on who they should pay visit to, who they should check in on, and who they should pester. As reported by The Tampa Bay Times in 2020:“They swarm homes in the middle of the night, waking families and embarrassing people in front of their neighbors. They write tickets for missing mailbox numbers and overgrown grass, saddling residents with court dates and fines. They come again and again, making arrests for any reason they can.One former deputy described the directive like this: ‘Make their lives miserable until they move or sue.'”Predictive policing can sound like science fiction, but it is neither scientific nor is it confined to fiction.Police and sheriff's departments across the US have used these systems to plug broad varieties of data into algorithmic models to try and predict not just who may be a criminal, but where crime may take place. Historical crime data, traffic information, and even weather patterns are sometimes offered up to tech platforms to suggest where, when, and how forcefully police units should be deployed. And when the police go to those areas, they often find and document minor infractions that, when reported, reinforce the algorithmic analysis that an area is crime-ridden, even if those crimes are, as the Tampa Bay Times investigation found, a teenager smoking a cigarette, or stray trash bags outside a home.Today, on the Lock and Code podcast with host David Ruiz, we speak with Emily Galvin-Almanza, cofounder of Partners for Justice and author of the upcoming book “The Price of Mercy,” about predictive policing, its impact on communities, and the dangerous outcomes that might arise when police offload their decision-making to data.“ I am worried about anything that a data broker can sell, they can sell to a police department, who can then feed that into an algorithmic or AI predictive policing system, who can then use that system—based on the purchases of people in ‘Neighborhood A'—to decide whether to hyper-police ‘Neighborhood A.'”Tune in today. You can also find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and whatever preferred podcast platform you use.For all our cybersecurity coverage, visit Malwarebytes Labs at malwarebytes.com/blog.Show notes and credits:Intro Music: “Spellbound” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Outro Music: “Good God” by Wowa...
