COVID-19: Helicopter transport – challenges & experience

The COVID 19 outbreak has presented challenges worldwide to the helicopter operator. A mixture of military, civil utility and aeromedical helicopters have been pressed into service to transport patients, and the rapid development of the pandemic has allowed little time for ‘best practice’ to be developed. In the face of operational pressures manufacturers, military regulators and operators have pressed solutions into service to meet demand. The purpose of this webinar will be to provide for the first time a common forum for key stakeholders to come together and share experience – good and bad – of how those in the front line of service provision have managed the enormous challenges presented. The UK military guidelines that underline operations being performed by the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy will be described. The OEM view from Leonardo Helicopters will be shared, with particular emphasis on operations in North America. Closer to home, the operations of coast guard providers in Iceland, Ireland and the UK will also be reviewed to capture complex operations being executed in that domain.

From integration into the startup procedure on the aircraft to formal training on how to manipulate the autopilot to get the aircraft on the ground in the event the pilot becomes incapacitated the training all members of the crew receive is phenomenal and truly focused creating a cohesive crew. Plus, we get a chance to hear about their new AW169 for our friends at Leonardo Helicopters. For the record we are jealous!!

Podcast Ep. #22 – Mark Crouchen on Rockwood Composites and Manufacturing Complex Composite Components

Aerospace Engineering Podcast

Mark Crouchen is the managing director of Rockwood Composites, a company in the UK that specialises in manufacturing complex composite components using compression and bladder moulding. These manufacturing processes use fibre mats of carbon fibre, glass fibre, Kevlar, or any other material, which are pre-impregnated with a resin matrix and then placed in a mould, where they are cured at elevated temperature with the addition of external or internal pressure. The team at Rockwood has been supplying the aerospace, defense, medical and nuclear industries for over 25 years, with customers ranging from Leonardo Helicopters and the McLaren Formula 1 team to Safran and Facebook’s Aquila internet drone. In 2018, Rockwood won the Innovation in Manufacture award at the Composite UK industry event for their innovative use of advanced composite materials on the Tokomak ST40 nuclear fusion reactor. Composite materials have many benefits in terms of their excellent strength and stiffness at low weight. However, there is a common misconception that metal or ceramic components can easily be replaced one-to-one with composite components. The performance of any composite component is closely linked to the quality of the manufacturing process, and designing and manufacturing quality components is an area where Rockwood Composites particularly excel. In this episode of the podcast, Mark and I talk about: his background in engineering the types of structures that Rockwood Composites manufacture why composites manufacturing is a challenge and the special solution Rockwood found for the Tokomak ST40 fusion reactor If you enjoy the Aerospace Engineering Podcast you can support it by leaving a review on iTunes or by supporting it directly on Patreon, where patrons of the podcast receive exclusive behind-the-scenes content and special episodes. Hello and thank you for tuning in to mba airtracker, my name is Benjamin Chiam and I'll be providing you with your aviation updates today. Starting with Airline news, after posting losses in 2017, Thai Airways is optimistic about turning things around in 2018 as the ICAO recently upgraded Thailand’s safety rating. Thai Airways is still waiting for the FAA to follow ICAOs verdict and raise the country's safety ratings, believing that the change in perception will help garner more overseas customers and increase the airlines revenue. Avianca posted a $245 million net profit in 2017 after adjusting for disruptions caused by a pilot strike in the fourth quarter of 2017. Before the adjustment, Avianca reported 82 million dollars in net profit, up 85% from 2016. This represents the strongest performance the airline has seen since its merger with TACA. Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky revealed that the company is thinking about launching a new airline to get into the end-to-end trip business. Metro Aviation ordered 25 H145e helicopters that will be produced in Airbus's plant in Mississippi. The order is vital for airbus as it will bridge the production line until the delivery and further orders of the militarized UH-72a for the US Army. Production of the type has been delayed by a three year legal battle between Leonardo Helicopters and Airbus that was finally resolved in favor of airbus early this year. Airbus has rolled out the first A350-900 ULR slated to enter service with Singapore Airlines. The aircraft will be used to restart direct flights between Singapore and North America, which used to be served by the A340-500s. Singapore Airlines is currently the only customer for the A350 ULR but Airbus is reported to be in talks with Qantas who has shown interest in the aircraft. Wow air closed a sale leaseback for an A321 with Sky aviation leasing marking the 36th aircraft placed for Sky. IAG engines has acquired a 747-400 , the CF6 powered aircraft was in storage at the time of acquisition but used to fly with KLM. ASL aviation has taken delivery of a 737-400F from vallair making it the largest European 737-400F operator. And Finally, Avmax took delivery of the last three Bombardier Q100s from an order of 27.
