Today we'll be talking about local reactions to the new reduced visa-free stays, then some political news with Thaksin Shinawatra officially receiving a royal pardon, in decidedly unpardonable crime news we have a couple of creeps in the form of a Canadian teacher assaulting a student and a local man sneaking into a woman's balcony, then, a Japanese passenger claims that a bolt driver attacked him in Asok, but don't worry a little later we have some good news in the with Thai Airways hiring their first female pilot in their 66-year history and the popular reality TV show Below Deck has chosen the location for their next season here in the land of smiles.

Today we'll be talking about Thai airways plans to increase ticket prices in the face of higher fuel costs, a drunken Pattaya clash that ends with an American soldier fighting police, and a little later some good news with ambitious promises to end scam centers combined with scam center rescues.

Where will Chinese tourists head for the longest Spring Festival holiday in history? How will regional travel hold up for the Lunar New Year break? And will the close proximity of the LNY and the Eid holiday seasons influence travel patterns in parts of South East Asia? On our fast-paced Start The Week show, Gary and Hannah stop over in,Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, Bahrain, London & Amsterdam in search of the answers to travel's big questions. En route, we discuss short-term rental sector challenges in the Philippines, and European flight expansions by Air Asia X, Vietnam Airlines & Thai Airways. Plus, we find out how much travellers would be prepared to pay to drive across the planned bridge connecting eastern Thailand with Koh Samui - and how would this affect the popular ferry routes?
Thai Airways recently confirmed the return of its non-stop flight route from Auckland to Bangkok - set to launch in the second half of 2026. The Covid-19 pandemic saw a halt to flights, which included the direct link between the two cities, shutting down in March 2020. BloggerAtLarge.com writer Megan Singleton explained further - and revealed her itinerary for a perfect four days in Thailand. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
More good news on the tourism front. Auckland Airport has reinstated its partnership with Thai Airways, bringing back non-stop flights between Auckland and Bangkok. The route reconnects New Zealand with one of Asia's major aviation hubs, and is expected to bring in around $250 million a year in visitor spending. Auckland Airport Chief Customer Officer Scott Tasker told Mike Hosking not only will it make it easier for Kiwis to visit Thailand, the flights also make New Zealand a much more attractive destination for Thai tourists. Also, he says, Thai Airways has a network of 56 international destinations from Bangkok, so this route will help bring in more high spenders from places like the UK, Germany and India. Power banks have become an essential travel companion, but starting April 1, Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot will ban their use and charging in-flight, citing safety concerns. This decision follows a series of incidents involving overheating lithium batteries, including a Scoot flight fire in Taiwan and a Batik Air cabin smoke incident. With airlines like Thai Airways, AirAsia, and South Korean carriers implementing similar restrictions, this raises pressing questions. On The Big Story, Hongbin Jeong speaks to Associate Professor Palani Balaya, Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, NUS, to help understand the risks associated with power banks, the reasoning behind this ban, and what it means for air travel moving forward. Sähköposti: hiljaisiahuutoja@gmail.com Instagram & Threads: hiljaisiahuutoja Facebook: Hiljaisia huutoja Musiikki: https://soundcloud.com/santer1 (yhteys: santericorp@gmail.com) Jakson lähdeluettelo: https://tinyurl.com/48lahteet

Nearly 60,000 people – that's the number of trade visitors who attended the first four days of the Singapore Airshow 2024. The number of attendees also dwarfs the previous record set six years ago, by about 10 per cent. That was when the last full scale show was held, before the biennial event was scaled down in 2020 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the exact number of deals made and the value of them were not disclosed, multiple deals were made at the event. China's Comac sealed an order of 50 planes from Tibet Airlines. While APAC carriers such as Thai Airways, Vietjet and Taiwan's Starlux bought 77 planes from major aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. So what does this suggest about the recovery of Singapore's MICE industry post-pandemic, and how are MICE operators positioning themselves for future growth as economic activities come back to life? Well, we're going to pose the questions to the organiser of Singapore Airshow 2024, Experia Events. Incorporated in 2005, Experia specialises in conceptualising and curating trade events of strategic interest that spur industry developments, and also manages the Changi Exhibition Centre. On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director, Experia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ask Skift Is the AI Chatbot for the Travel Industry Ask Skift Your Questions Episode Notes Choice Hotels views its recent acquisition of Radisson Americas as an enormous success and it's strongly considering making more deals, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Choice CEO Patrick Pacious touted the benefits of the acquisition during Choice's second quarter earnings call on Tuesday. As for future acquisition activity, Pacious said Choice is always looking for deals that could boost the return on investment for hotel owners and grow brands. He added that Choice sees opportunities to expand its portfolio outside of the United States. Choice reported that its revenue per available room — an important hotel industry metric — increased 20% from the same period in 2019. The company also set a quarterly record for revenue. Next, the Chinese government is limiting overseas group travel for its citizens to certain destinations. Those restrictions are stunting the global travel industry's recovery, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy. Chinese travelers can only take group tours to less than half of the countries that were available to them pre-Covid. Brophy reports the U.S. is not on that list as Chinese travel agencies aren't permitted to sell any group tour products to the U.S. Sienna Parulis-Cook, an executive at China-based marketing company Dragon Trail International, said Chinese outbound tourism to the U.S. is also limited in part because of visa delays. Chinese travel agents surveyed said visa delays were the biggest obstacle in selling outbound tourism in 2024. Chinese outbound travel hit 65% of 2019 level during the country's most recent national holiday period. Finally, Turkish Airlines and Thai Airways have unveiled a plan to form a joint venturecovering flights between Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, reports Jay Shabat, senior analyst at Skift publication Airline Weekly. The two carriers already have a codeshare arrangement, which enables them to market each other's flights. But Shabat notes joint ventures go deeper, often involving revenue sharing, collaborating pricing and cargo cooperation among other practices. Turkish and Thai haven't yet detailed their exact plans, other than announcing that Thai will start serving Istanbul in December.
In the latest news, strikes in Germany have forced Thai Airways to cancel 6 flights, causing chaos for travellers. Meanwhile, health authorities in Thailand have reported three cases of monkeypox, sparking concerns about the spread of the disease. To make matters worse, Thailand is bracing for a scorching summer this year. The recent news of energy bill hikes for households while the industry sees a drop has caused outrage amongst the public. Furthermore, authorities are warning beachgoers of the consequences of smoking on Hua Hin Beach, including hefty fines and potential jail time. Myths of Branding: Dispel the Misconceptions and Become a Brand Expert by Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey About the Book: A brand is just a logo - everyone knows that, don't they? After all, it's not as though a good brand can save a bad business, and besides, the digital revolution is making branding irrelevant... Myths of Branding, written by renowned branding experts Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey, explores the huge number of misguided, mistaken, and blatantly false myths that abound in the branding arena. From the belief that developing brands is nothing more than fiddling with logos to the perception that it's a 'soft' area of marketing that doesn't go beyond visual identity and that the customer is always right - these myths are all surprisingly entrenched, yet could not be further from the truth. Myths of Branding uses up-to-date case studies and witty examples to debunk these popular misconceptions and replaces them with the reality of what it's really like to work in the world of branding. Jam-packed with entertaining anecdotes and useful information that practitioners can learn from, it guarantees a deeper, sharper understanding of the realities of branding and brand management. About the Author: Andy Milligan is a leading international brand and business consultant and is acknowledged as an expert in all areas of brand development. Time flies. It's 10 months since we were debating the merits (or otherwise) of the proposed Phuket Sandbox. But that was then - the Phuket Sandbox started on 1 July 2021 - and this is now. A great deal has occurred in Thailand's travel sphere since then. And more changes await up ahead - including the likely removal of a PCR test on arrival. But what is the outlook for Thai tourism in 2022? This week, Gary and Hannah welcome back Bangkok-based travel journalist Vincent Vichit-Vadakan to talk all things travel and tourism in Thailand. Vincent has been travelling domestically in recent weeks and reports back on what he has observed. He also updates us on Thailand's latest arrivals figures and the timeline for easing the Test & Go entry rules. We also discuss the key takeaways from a recent seminar Vincent hosted in Bangkok featuring Thai Airways and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Plus, we talk mask mandates, Songkran, airport protocols, new hotel openings and Thailand's domestic travel stimulus. And, we look back over a truly dramatic year in South East Asia's most visited country.

Chairman of non-profit Australian Indian Travel and Tourism Council, Sandip Hor, said India's decision to allow scheduled international from 27 March could result in a drop in airfares. He said commercial airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines and Thai Airways would operate from India the same way as they did before the pandemic. This will increase the supply of seats. Air India and Qantas currently operate direct flights on New Delhi-Sydney and New Delhi-Melbourne routes.

Airlines have felt the brunt of the collapse of international travel in South East Asia since borders were closed in March 2020. This week, Gary and Hannah talk all things aviation and airlines with Singapore-based Brendan Sobie, founder of Sobie Aviation. We discuss the varying challenges facing flag carriers in South East Asia, including Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Garuda Indonesia and Philippine Airlines. Also, how can LCCs manage to survive if an international travel recovery doesn't occur any time soon? Against this backdrop, new airlines are making applications to operate, so could the aviation market in Asia Pacific look very different in the coming years? Plus, we talk about the new EU-ASEAN Air Transport Agreement and compare the 2021 outlook for long-haul and short-haul markets. Finally, we assess whether the Phuket Sandbox - and the phased reopening of Thailand - presents a viable model for other countries to welcome back vaccinated leisure travellers.
