Power banks have become an essential travel companion, but starting April 1, Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot will ban their use and charging in-flight, citing safety concerns. This decision follows a series of incidents involving overheating lithium batteries, including a Scoot flight fire in Taiwan and a Batik Air cabin smoke incident. With airlines like Thai Airways, AirAsia, and South Korean carriers implementing similar restrictions, this raises pressing questions. On The Big Story, Hongbin Jeong speaks to Associate Professor Palani Balaya, Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, NUS, to help understand the risks associated with power banks, the reasoning behind this ban, and what it means for air travel moving forward. Sähköposti: hiljaisiahuutoja@gmail.com Instagram & Threads: hiljaisiahuutoja Facebook: Hiljaisia huutoja Musiikki: https://soundcloud.com/santer1 (yhteys: santericorp@gmail.com) Jakson lähdeluettelo: https://tinyurl.com/48lahteet

Nearly 60,000 people – that's the number of trade visitors who attended the first four days of the Singapore Airshow 2024. The number of attendees also dwarfs the previous record set six years ago, by about 10 per cent. That was when the last full scale show was held, before the biennial event was scaled down in 2020 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the exact number of deals made and the value of them were not disclosed, multiple deals were made at the event. China's Comac sealed an order of 50 planes from Tibet Airlines. While APAC carriers such as Thai Airways, Vietjet and Taiwan's Starlux bought 77 planes from major aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. So what does this suggest about the recovery of Singapore's MICE industry post-pandemic, and how are MICE operators positioning themselves for future growth as economic activities come back to life? Well, we're going to pose the questions to the organiser of Singapore Airshow 2024, Experia Events. Incorporated in 2005, Experia specialises in conceptualising and curating trade events of strategic interest that spur industry developments, and also manages the Changi Exhibition Centre. On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director, Experia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ask Skift Is the AI Chatbot for the Travel Industry Ask Skift Your Questions Episode Notes Choice Hotels views its recent acquisition of Radisson Americas as an enormous success and it's strongly considering making more deals, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Choice CEO Patrick Pacious touted the benefits of the acquisition during Choice's second quarter earnings call on Tuesday. As for future acquisition activity, Pacious said Choice is always looking for deals that could boost the return on investment for hotel owners and grow brands. He added that Choice sees opportunities to expand its portfolio outside of the United States. Choice reported that its revenue per available room — an important hotel industry metric — increased 20% from the same period in 2019. The company also set a quarterly record for revenue. Next, the Chinese government is limiting overseas group travel for its citizens to certain destinations. Those restrictions are stunting the global travel industry's recovery, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy. Chinese travelers can only take group tours to less than half of the countries that were available to them pre-Covid. Brophy reports the U.S. is not on that list as Chinese travel agencies aren't permitted to sell any group tour products to the U.S. Sienna Parulis-Cook, an executive at China-based marketing company Dragon Trail International, said Chinese outbound tourism to the U.S. is also limited in part because of visa delays. Chinese travel agents surveyed said visa delays were the biggest obstacle in selling outbound tourism in 2024. Chinese outbound travel hit 65% of 2019 level during the country's most recent national holiday period. Finally, Turkish Airlines and Thai Airways have unveiled a plan to form a joint venturecovering flights between Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, reports Jay Shabat, senior analyst at Skift publication Airline Weekly. The two carriers already have a codeshare arrangement, which enables them to market each other's flights. But Shabat notes joint ventures go deeper, often involving revenue sharing, collaborating pricing and cargo cooperation among other practices. Turkish and Thai haven't yet detailed their exact plans, other than announcing that Thai will start serving Istanbul in December.
In the latest news, strikes in Germany have forced Thai Airways to cancel 6 flights, causing chaos for travellers. Meanwhile, health authorities in Thailand have reported three cases of monkeypox, sparking concerns about the spread of the disease. To make matters worse, Thailand is bracing for a scorching summer this year. The recent news of energy bill hikes for households while the industry sees a drop has caused outrage amongst the public. Furthermore, authorities are warning beachgoers of the consequences of smoking on Hua Hin Beach, including hefty fines and potential jail time. Myths of Branding: Dispel the Misconceptions and Become a Brand Expert by Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey About the Book: A brand is just a logo - everyone knows that, don't they? After all, it's not as though a good brand can save a bad business, and besides, the digital revolution is making branding irrelevant... Myths of Branding, written by renowned branding experts Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey, explores the huge number of misguided, mistaken, and blatantly false myths that abound in the branding arena. Myths of Branding uses up-to-date case studies and witty examples to debunk these popular misconceptions and replaces them with the reality of what it's really like to work in the world of branding. It appears that the airline, kept alive by cargo freight income and the protection of the court through the pandemic emergency, has made substantial progress in trimming its previously huge cost base while capturing market share as the country reopened with other international airlines, for now, scrambling after richer pickings while others are not able to compete on routes to Bangkok as before. However, Bangkok Bank, a key dissenting creditor in a submission to the Central Bankruptcy Court has expressed its doubts about the firm's high-flying plans to find further credit which includes an expressed intention to relaunch itself on the stock market by 2025.https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/10/21/flyers-to-finally-receive-refunds-from-thai-airways/ James Morris reports from Bangkok.

Time flies. It's 10 months since we were debating the merits (or otherwise) of the proposed Phuket Sandbox. But that was then - the Phuket Sandbox started on 1 July 2021 - and this is now. A great deal has occurred in Thailand's travel sphere since then. And more changes await up ahead - including the likely removal of a PCR test on arrival. But what is the outlook for Thai tourism in 2022? This week, Gary and Hannah welcome back Bangkok-based travel journalist Vincent Vichit-Vadakan to talk all things travel and tourism in Thailand. Vincent has been travelling domestically in recent weeks and reports back on what he has observed. He also updates us on Thailand's latest arrivals figures and the timeline for easing the Test & Go entry rules. We also discuss the key takeaways from a recent seminar Vincent hosted in Bangkok featuring Thai Airways and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Plus, we talk mask mandates, Songkran, airport protocols, new hotel openings and Thailand's domestic travel stimulus. And, we look back over a truly dramatic year in South East Asia's most visited country.

Chairman of non-profit Australian Indian Travel and Tourism Council, Sandip Hor, said India's decision to allow scheduled international from 27 March could result in a drop in airfares. He said commercial airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines and Thai Airways would operate from India the same way as they did before the pandemic. This will increase the supply of seats. Air India and Qantas currently operate direct flights on New Delhi-Sydney and New Delhi-Melbourne routes.

BIO: Kittisak Kovintavewat is a value investor who focuses on investing in value stocks in the US and China. STORY: Kittisak bought the Thai Airways stock as it grew steadily, but a few external and internal problems made the stock price drop. Even though Kittisak had studied the company extensively and knew the stock was strong, he panicked and sold his shares. The problems were later resolved, and the stock went up to three times more than what Kittisak had sold it for. LEARNING: Don't focus too much on the price; instead, focus on the company's stability. Find your investment style. “Invest often so that you can find your investment style. Once you find your style, you will gain more success.”Kittisak Kovintavewat Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kittisak-kovintavewat-60a381a4/ (Kittisak Kovintavewat) is a value investor who focuses on investing in value stocks in the US and China. He has been investing in the US for more than seven years and runs the https://www.billionairevi.com/ (Billionaire VI) page to help investors invest following the value investment style. Worst investment everIn 2014, Kittisak took an interest in Thai Airways. He studied the company for a while and realized that the company would make a huge profit every time oil prices would fall. Kittisak continued his research, convinced that it was a good company to invest in. At the time, Thai Airways' shares were selling at 15 Baht per share. The price kept rising after Kittisak made his investment. But after a while, problems started arising in the Thai economy. The company was also experiencing internal issues, and this saw the share price begin to fall. The price went all the way down to 9 Baht per share. At this point, Kittisak feared that he would lose his entire investment, so he made the rash decision to sell his shares at 9 Baht per share. Soon after Kittisak sold his shares, the government came to Thai Airways' rescue, and things started turning for the company. Within a few months, the share price went up to 30 Baht. Kittisak was devastated for not giving the company a chance to turn around. Lessons learnedDon't speculate in the stock but invest in the company. If you focus on the stock, you only concentrate on the short-term price, but when you focus on the company, you focus on the long-term value. Never invest in a turnaround company; instead, invest in stable companies with the potential for long-term gain. Investment is about time, so always think long-term. Andrew's takeawaysYou can't capture every factor that affects a share price; there will be surprise factors. Find your investment style. Actionable adviceUnderstand the difference between speculators and investors. Speculators are interested in the price and make profits when the prices go up. They buy and sell in the short term. They don't want to study or know about the company. An investor takes time to learn about the company and understands the fundamentals of the company. They consider themselves the owner of the company. The investor succeeds more than the speculator. No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsKittisak's number one goal for the next 12 months is developing and growing his portfolio by 20%. He also wants to continue sharing more investment information via his Billionaire VI page. Airlines have felt the brunt of the collapse of international travel in South East Asia since borders were closed in March 2020. This week, Gary and Hannah talk all things aviation and airlines with Singapore-based Brendan Sobie, founder of Sobie Aviation. We discuss the varying challenges facing flag carriers in South East Asia, including Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Garuda Indonesia and Philippine Airlines. Also, how can LCCs manage to survive if an international travel recovery doesn't occur any time soon? Against this backdrop, new airlines are making applications to operate, so could the aviation market in Asia Pacific look very different in the coming years? Plus, we talk about the new EU-ASEAN Air Transport Agreement and compare the 2021 outlook for long-haul and short-haul markets. Finally, we assess whether the Phuket Sandbox - and the phased reopening of Thailand - presents a viable model for other countries to welcome back vaccinated leisure travellers.

Nobody likes airline food. Right? Wrong! Apparently the folks in Bangkok are loving it right now. Thai Airways have opened a Pop-Up restaurant, complete with actual airline seats for the furniture and cabin crew for service staff. It's brilliant on so many levels. With this Pop-Up Thai Airways can... - sell their existing food inventory - generate some revenue - get some great PR - market test new food concepts and recipes - enhance their image as a fun, innovative airline Here's a link to the story... https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/events/chicken-or-the-beef-thai-airways-opens-up-pop-up-restaurants-serving-their-airline-food #airlinecatering #popups #covidinnovation

We start this week's Aid Station in Bangkok, Thailand, where we meet Narongchai Wongthanavimok who has achieved amazing things in both running and business. Narongchai is an Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star runner and on the business front has held roles as CFO of Thai Airways and the Dusit Thani Group. His running story is an amazing transition from an unhealthy overweight executive to completing all of the Majors in two years. He has well and truly caught the bug and was supposed to run Tokyo, Berlin and Chicago this year. When I caught up with him on Friday he had returned home from a gall bladder operation the day before and was itching to get back on the road. He shared how Covid-19 had made him recogise the need to pause. "I have been very focused on work and have put this operation off for some time." In fact he is taking it a step further and is currently winding down his role with Dusit to take a step back and consider his next chapter. Listen for his leadership tips including the importance of listening to all stakeholders before making decisions that address both macro and micro considerations. "It's the art of balancing between high-level/overall knowledge and detail/action-oriented knowledge" Watch my conversation with Narongchai here https://youtu.be/ViryDAZyH6M
Thai Airways has been allowed to restructure its debts to keep its planes in the sky. The struggling airline had previously asked for a government bail-out via a 58.1bn baht ($1.81bn, £1.48bn) loan. Thai officials however told the airline to come up with a restructuring plan to avoid going bankrupt. The global airline industry is facing a severe financial crisis due to coronavirus travel restrictions with a growing list of casualties. Thai Airways was under financial pressure even before the coronavirus outbreak caused passenger numbers to plummet. In 2019, it reported losses of 12bn baht. Thai Airways said it has no intention to file for bankruptcy, responding to rumours appeared in the news and online. --- This episode is sponsored by · Afrolit Podcast: Hosted by Ekua PM, Afrolit shares the stories of multi-faceted Africans one episode at a time. https://open.spotify.com/show/2nJxiiYRyfMQlDEXXpzlZS?si=mmgODX3NQ-yfQvR0JRH-WA Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support

Holidaymakers are being warned about dodgy travel agents after hundreds of customers have had their plans wrecked or have been fleeced by a rogue operator.Auckland firm Travel Globe this month went into liquidation after months of issuing customers fake plane tickets and itineraries. The firm owes an estimated $180,000 to creditors.Hundreds of people have been left out of pocket - including Auckland dad Sumeet Randhawa, who has lost the $2700 he paid for return flights to Delhi for himself, his wife and infant daughter."I wish I hadn't used them now," he said. The Herald has seen the fake itinerary issued which includes details like special meals, a flight number and even a bassinet request.Other victims have been left stranded overseas, while others were forced to buy expensive last-minute replacement airfares. The revelations have sparked calls for greater regulation of the travel industry - and a warning to travellers to use reputable companies and resist choosing an agent based solely on the cheapest online fares.Travel Globe is the second company in as many months to collapse, after Travel Guru failed in November. It is estimated their customers have collectively lost about $500,000.Neither agency was a member of the Travel Agents' Association of New Zealand (Taanz), which ensures customers are protected if their booking agent goes bust. The Herald yesterday revealed Travel Globe, based in Manurewa, had been issuing its customers with fake plane tickets and itineraries for at least six months.Staff then ignored calls from angry clients who found out from the airlines themselves, sometimes a week before their travel date, that no booking had ever been made. Some were promised refunds which never transpired. And just weeks before director Jujhar Singh, who is a former bankrupt, put the company into liquidation, his wife stepped down from being a fellow director and shareholder'I've lost $2700 on tickets'Aucklander Sumeet Randhawa was due to leave for Delhi tomorrow with his family. But he received an email on January 9 saying Travel Globe was insolvent. He immediately called Thai Airways and was told no booking had been made, despite it being "confirmed" by the defunct agency in December.A fake itinerary issued to a customer by Travel Globe Limited.Randhawa has had to borrow a further $3200 for emergency last-minute flights because the trip was for his father's retirement."It's very stressful because I work part-time and my wife works part-time."Randhawa's cousin Janmeet says he was also ripped off by Travel Globe when it issued his mother and 2-year-old daughter fake tickets for a domestic flight in India after a successful flight from New Zealand. He lost about $200 and gave up chasing a refund after months of unanswered calls, deciding it wasn't worth pursuing a case with the Disputes Tribunal.Janmeet had used the agency before without issue, despite others warning him against using the firm because they'd lost money. But he also chose Travel Globe because its prices were about $100-$200 cheaper than other agents he'd contacted. It's understood Travel Globe operated almost exclusively in the Indian community.Liquidator 'extremely concerned'Travel Globe's liquidator, Imran Kamal, was appointed on January 8 and said the findings from his initial investigation were "extremely concerning".He was trying to get to the bottom of where the money went but finding it difficult to get more information from the director.Kamal believed potentially hundreds of people could be affected and current estimates are that the company owed about $180,000 to creditors and $26,162 to BNZ bank."[They've] received money, they haven't bought the tickets and they've used it for something else," the liquidator said.He believed the industry needed to be better regulated so other businesses couldn't operate like Travel Globe. At present "anyone can set up a travel agency" and "people just assume things will be done properl...

On November 7, Sam Rainsy said that he was prevented from boarding a Thai Airways flight travelling from Paris to Bangkok . However, The New York Times reported that the Thai airline employee, who declined to be named, said a valid ticket had not been issued in Sam Rainsy’s name. He said a booking in Sam Rainsy’s name had been made for a new flight on Saturday. Unbezahlte Werbung* Tim liebt Thaifood. Shashank Nigam, author of Soar and CEO of Simpliflying, joins the Invincible Brand Podcast to share some powerful strategies on how today’s leading airlines have managed to build sustainable trust – and how that serves them when undesirable incidents risk occurring. About this episode The airline industry is tough. The risks are exponential; profit margins are difficult to maintain; the general public is critical, emotional, and has the ability to instil a world of impact on brand equity and reputation; regulatory compliance is strict and severe… and the list goes on. And yet, there are some airlines out there that just simply get it. These airlines continue to do phenomenal work in creating brands that deliver an experience and put people first, fostering a culture that aspires to achieve brand invincibility and works proactively towards this objective every day. Fortunately for the rest of us, there are so many crisis ready lessons and strategies that can be taken from these airlines and adapted into your own organization, no matter its industry. In this week’s episode of the Invincible Brand Podcast, Shashank sat down with me to discuss the strategies, mindsets, and crisis management failures and successes that he has seen in his work with over 90 of these airlines over the past several years. This episode explores: What the strongest, most profitable, and beloved airlines have in common-and what you can learn from their success and strive for invincibility. Why achieving brand invincibility should be aspirational. How the CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, single-handedly raised the bar for airline crisis management, and the important lessons you can learn from his decisions and actions. A fascinating example of how a stagnant crisis management plan hindered Thai Airways’s chance to effectively manage an issue. NOPQ gasztro rovatunk rendhagyóan kezdődik. Hallgatói érdeklődésre kiderítjük, mennyiért lehet elutazni Thaiföldre? Karol Nieciecki-t (Thai Airways) faggatjuk. Aztán egy kis gazdasági téma: aki Thaiföldre utazik jobb, ha köt utasbiztosítást. Sok a kockázat: majomharapás, motorbaleset, dengue láz. Az egészségügy színvonala viszont nem valami jó. Ahol meg igen, az biza drága. Nagy Róbert (Mondial Assistance) ad jó tanácsokat. Gede kolléga pedig a thai konyha jellegzetességeivel jelentkezik a rovat végén. Tőzsdenyitás Kovács Bálinttal, az Equilor munkatársával, aztán nagy dolog történik: Mihálovits kolléga kisorsolja a thai utazási játék nyertesét. A reggel zárásaként IT rovatunkban Bátky Zoltán (PCWorld online) elmeséli, mi baja az USA-nak a ZTE nevű kínai infokomm céggel?
Hello and thank you for tuning in to mba airtracker, my name is Benjamin Chiam and I'll be providing you with your aviation updates today. Starting with Airline news, after posting losses in 2017, Thai Airways is optimistic about turning things around in 2018 as the ICAO recently upgraded Thailand’s safety rating. Thai Airways is still waiting for the FAA to follow ICAOs verdict and raise the country's safety ratings, believing that the change in perception will help garner more overseas customers and increase the airlines revenue. Avianca posted a $245 million net profit in 2017 after adjusting for disruptions caused by a pilot strike in the fourth quarter of 2017. Before the adjustment, Avianca reported 82 million dollars in net profit, up 85% from 2016. This represents the strongest performance the airline has seen since its merger with TACA. Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky revealed that the company is thinking about launching a new airline to get into the end-to-end trip business. Metro Aviation ordered 25 H145e helicopters that will be produced in Airbus's plant in Mississippi. The order is vital for airbus as it will bridge the production line until the delivery and further orders of the militarized UH-72a for the US Army. Production of the type has been delayed by a three year legal battle between Leonardo Helicopters and Airbus that was finally resolved in favor of airbus early this year. Airbus has rolled out the first A350-900 ULR slated to enter service with Singapore Airlines. The aircraft will be used to restart direct flights between Singapore and North America, which used to be served by the A340-500s. Singapore Airlines is currently the only customer for the A350 ULR but Airbus is reported to be in talks with Qantas who has shown interest in the aircraft. Wow air closed a sale leaseback for an A321 with Sky aviation leasing marking the 36th aircraft placed for Sky. IAG engines has acquired a 747-400 , the CF6 powered aircraft was in storage at the time of acquisition but used to fly with KLM. ASL aviation has taken delivery of a 737-400F from vallair making it the largest European 737-400F operator. And Finally, Avmax took delivery of the last three Bombardier Q100s from an order of 27.
It's all headlines while Anthony is away. British Airways squeezes seats aboard intra-Europe routes and a question: Why can't US carriers get into the economy top 20? Jake does headlines and tries to be done before boring you to tears.
Why are we seeing such different results from the two big Korean airlines? Korean Air again overcame systemic challenges to deliver a standout performance in the first quarter. And although the fuel situation certainly helped, the story wasn't only about fuel. If you don't believe us, just ask Korean's chief rival Asiana, who struggled mightily in the same quarter. And although there's no sign of a joint venture happening between Korean Air and Delta, we discuss it anyway, because that's how we are. Terrorism is—for good reason—on the minds of airlines around the world right now. It's wreaking havoc on the balance sheet of Turkey's Pegasus, which is losing a lot of money. But terrorism might be having the opposite effect for Thai Airways, which has made a brilliant return to profitability. We touch on SpiceJet, a comeback story in its own right. And, of course, we talk about what last week's horrible crash means for Egyptair in the longer run.
Not so surprisingly, easyJet wrapped up a strong earnings season in Europe with some strong numbers of its own. We looked at what's working for easyJet but also why it can't quite top rivals Ryanair or Wizz Air. Then it's pretty much all downhill from there. Most airlines can top Air Berlin right now. Thai Airways is struggling with overcapacity and political unrest. Though things have improved significantly, Kenya Airways is still struggling with terrorism, Ebola and the fact that it's tough to be in an emerging market right now. And LATAM and Gol are coping in the face of Brazil's cratering economy. And lastly, desperate to end on a lighter note, we turn to Thanksgiving in America and touch on the realities (and myths!) of holiday air traffic.
