For the record, neither meth OR shotgun shells are allowed to be carried onto in airplane at Philadelphia International Airport. Can't blame a guy for tryin', but you can arrest him. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A pack of four-legged therapists got a break of their own when they were honored at the airport where they dutifully work to ease stress and calm travelers. The event at Philadelphia International Airport marked five years since the 23 members of the Wagging Tails Brigade began greeting people and serving as therapy dogs. Several of them were presented with birthday presents and a customized cake while passersby were invited to eat cupcakes and sign an oversized birthday card. Members of the brigade and their volunteer human handlers are at the airport for at least two hours a week, impressing people with their tricks and doing what they can to raise the spirits of road-weary passengers. Dogs wear vests asking people to "pet me." Alan Gurvitz, a volunteer with Hope, a Labrador retriever, said their goal is to make travel a bit more pleasant. "I like to refer to the airport as the land of cancellations and delays. So people tend to be very stressed out here," Gurvitz said. Jamie and Victoria Hill, on their way to their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, turned to pet Bella while trying to stay positive after their flight was delayed. "It reminded us of our dog back at home," Jamie Hill said. "We miss him." Back in June, Nancy Mittleman recalled, she was at the airport with her German shepherd Tarik while bad weather snarled air traffic. The two of them spent several hours entertaining stranded children and their parents. "Soon enough, I had an entire crowd around me," Mittleman said. "There must have been 10 kids sitting around him and they were talking to each other. And the beauty of it was before that, there were a lot of stressed-out parents and a lot of unhappy children." Volunteers try to coordinate to have at least one brigade member at the airport to greet travelers, especially on days with significant delays or disruptions. fWotD Episode 2661: Pan Am Flight 214 Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 17 August 2024 is Pan Am Flight 214.Pan Am Flight 214 was a scheduled flight of Pan American World Airways from Isla Verde International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Friendship Airport near Baltimore, and then to Philadelphia International Airport. On December 8, 1963, while flying from Baltimore to Philadelphia, the Boeing 707-121 serving the flight crashed near Elkton, Maryland. All 81 occupants of the plane were killed. The crash was Pan Am's first fatal accident with the 707, which it had introduced to its fleet five years earlier. An investigation by the Civil Aeronautics Board concluded that the probable cause of the crash was a lightning strike that had ignited fuel vapors in one of the aircraft's fuel tanks, causing an explosion that destroyed the left wing. The exact manner of ignition was never determined, but the investigation increased awareness of how lightning can damage aircraft, leading to new regulations that resulted in safety improvements. The crash also inspired research into the safety of several types of aviation fuel and into ways of changing the design of aircraft fuel systems to make them safer in the event of lightning strikes. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Saturday, 17 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Pan Am Flight 214 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Salli.

Episode 111 Lindy Sue Biechler Part 1 of 2 The vicious, brutal 1975 stabbing murder of sweet, shy newlywed Lindy Sue Biechler haunted Lancaster, PA. Lindy was stabbed 19 times right inside her front door, and a butcher knife left embedded in her neck, and police couldn't determine any motive in the case. The 19 year old had no enemies, and no one had seen or heard anything. It was considered the most puzzling unsolved mystery in the area for decades. Then, in 1997, a breakthrough in lab testing hinted at a motive – but not at a suspect. Two decades later, even the powers of forensic genealogy came up short. But in pondering the genealogy, CeCe Moore detected a genetic pattern that she linked to immigration to Lancaster from a specific region in Italy. Fortuitous records of Italian immigrants to Lancaster helped her focus her search. And when she considered these records alongside the phenotype information, she stumbled on a name – someone who had a connection to Lindy. A coffee cup casually thrown into a garbage can at Philadelphia International Airport proved her hunch right, and Lindy's family had answers at long last. Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray has revealed the bureau has seen an increase in domestic threats since last weekend's attacks in Israel.Wray, 56, made the comments while speaking to a gathering of police chiefs in San Diego Saturday, where he urged citizens to be vigilant and share intel to stop 'lone actors' inspired by Palestinian militant group Hamas. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (10/17/2023): 3:05pm: On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted to fill the speakership position left vacant following the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The Republican nominee for speaker, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), received 200 votes—well short of the 217 votes he needed to win a majority of the House. In total, twenty Republicans voted for candidates other than Jordan. Russell Dye, Communications Director for Jordan, suggested that another round of voting is expected to occur today. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), an ally of Jordan, echoed a similar sentiment—saying he thinks at least one more round of voting will occur on Tuesday. Following the vote, Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry placed the House of Representatives in recess. You can read updates as they unfold here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/17/us/house-speaker-jim-jordan-vote 3:15pm- WBUR, a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate in Boston, MA, recently hosted a guest who seemingly denied that Hamas had killed women and children in Israel during an October 7th attack that left an estimated 1,400 people dead. You can read more here: https://www.foxnews.com/media/npr-affiliate-pulls-show-after-guest-doubted-hamas-killed-women-children-during-terror-attacks 3:40pm- In a statement made on X, Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R-NY) explained his vote against Jim Jordan's speakership bid: “I want a Speaker who understands Long Island's unique needs. Restoring the SALT deduction, safeguarding 9/11 victim support funding, and investing in critical infrastructure are our priorities. I look forward to discussions with candidates.” Several Republican holdouts are now suggesting that it's an impossibility for any candidate within their caucus to receive the 217 votes needed to become speaker and, consequently, the House should move to expand the powers of Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC). 4:05pm- On Monday night, the Philadelphia Phillies won Game 1 of their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The final score was 5-3. 4:10pm- According to Luke Broadwater of The New York Times, “Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise met after Jordan lost on the first ballot. Jordan asked Scalise for help but did not receive a pledge to do so, according to a person familiar with the conversation. Scalise and his allies are smarting from the way Jordan supporters undercut Scalise after he won a conference election but they refused to support him.” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/17/us/house-speaker-jim-jordan-vote 4:15pm- On Monday, Judge Tanya S. Chutkan imposed a limited gag order on Donald Trump—in a case that alleges Trump conspired to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Judge Chutkan's gag order prevents the former president from verbally attacking witnesses and prosecutors publicly. Alarmingly, it may also restrict Trump's ability to criticize specific elements of the Biden Administration's Department of Justice. Could this gag order impact Trump's ability to campaign—and is it a violation of his First Amendment right to free speech and petition? Trump is expected to appeal the order. While speaking at a rally in Clive, Iowa, Trump announced he is “willing to go to jail” as part of a principled stance against Churkan's “unconstitutional” gag order. 4:20pm- During a campaign rally in Iowa, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump jokingly compared himself to Al Capone, saying he has been indicted more times than the 1920s Chicago mobster. 4:30pm- According to Israel Defense Forces (IDF), a misfired Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) rocket struck a hospital in Gaza leaving an estimated 500 people dead. Ari Blaff of National Review writes: “The Palestinian Ministry of Health, a government body under the control of Hamas, previously claimed that an Israeli air strike was responsible for the hospital explosion.” You can read more here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/misfired-palestinian-islamic-jihad-rocket-responsible-for-hospital-explosion-idf-says/ 4:40pm- Judge Carolyn Carluccio of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her candidacy for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing the continued drama on Capitol Hill over who will be elected the next Speaker of the House by the Republican majority. Dom explains why he's in full support of Jim Jordan, but again reinforces his mindset since the drama began, explaining why this is ultimately a negative for optics of the Republican Party. Also, Dom offers further updates on the situation between Israel and Palestine and Hamas, and tells of more justifications by those on the Left for the violence performed by Hamas against the Israeli people. Then, Dom welcomes in FOP Lodge 5 President John McNesby to discuss the capture of one of the two suspects who shot and killed Police Officer Richard Mendez and wounded Officer Raul Ortiz in a Philadelphia International Airport after the officers tried preventing a car theft. McNesby explains the symbolic nature of capturing the suspect in the cuffs used by the Mendez, and tells how his family is feeling with some sort of resolution in the absolute tragedy. Also, McNesby highlights some of the great donors who contributed to the reward fund, and reveals an upcoming fundraising event with all proceeds going toward the family of Richard Mendez. After that, Dom welcomes Colonel Allen B. West back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss developments in the Middle East with news now that the United States may deploy Americans to help Israel fend off Hamas. First, though, West reveals who he's rooting for in the MLB playoffs, telling that as a Braves fan from Texas, he can only root against the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, moving to more serious topics, West breaks down the Biden administration response to the situation in Israel, explaining why it's important to have Israel's back no matter what's necessary to eliminate the treat of Hamas. He explained: “I am a ‘no' on allowing Matt Gaetz, and the other seven [Republicans that ousted Kevin McCarthy], to win by putting their individual in as speaker.” Meanwhile, an optimistic Jordan told reporters: “We are going to elect a new speaker tomorrow.” 5:05pm- Max Marin of The Philadelphia Inquirer writes: “Police have arrested a suspect in the killing of Officer Richard Mendez and the wounding of Officer Raul Ortiz, who were shot on Thursday while responding to a car theft in a parking garage at Philadelphia International Airport.” During an afternoon press conference on Monday, the Philadelphia Police Department identified the suspect as Yobranny Martínez Fernández—though, they are still actively searching for two other suspects. You can read more about the developing story here: https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia-airport-shooting-arrest-richard-mendez-raul-ortiz-20231016.html 5:15pm- While speaking at the 2023 International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray warned that Hamas-style terrorist attacks may be coming to the United States. If this is true, why isn't the Biden Administration prioritizing border security? Griff Jenkins, national correspondent for Fox News, reports that at least two Iranians on the terror watchlist have been arrested at the U.S. Southern border already this month. 5:25pm- While speaking with Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes, President Joe Biden conceded that there is an elevated terror threat in the United States following the Hamas attacks in Israel. Biden went on to accuse Hamas of “hiding behind civilians”—which makes it more difficult for Israeli forces to eliminate the threat of future attacks. 5:35pm- Rich is joined by 1210 WPHT producers Anthony and Dan who are at Citizen Bank Park ahead of tonight's Game 1 playoff matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks. Luke Broadwater of The New York Times writes: “Representative Ann Wagner of Missouri called Mr. Jordan's candidacy a ‘nonstarter.' Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska, who represents a district won by President Biden, said lawmakers were worried about caving to the whims of the hard-right members who had refused to back Mr. Scalise. Representative Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, a supporter of Mr. Jordan's, acknowledged that there were Republicans who would not support him ‘because they don't want to reward that behavior.' Some members, foreseeing a fight that could drag on for weeks, were also discussing how they might give Representative Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina—the temporary speaker whose role is primarily to hold an election for a speaker—more power to carry out the chamber's work until the conflict could be resolved.” You can read Broadwater's full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/13/us/politics/house-speaker-jordan-scalise.html

Sweden's greatest king, Gustavus Adolphus, aspires for Sweden to become a maritime and commercial power in the Atlantic, and engages Dutch entrepreneurs to advise him and his councilors how to do it. The Swedes recruit Peter Minuit, the erstwhile governor of New Netherland and the man who acquired Manhattan island from the Lenne Lenape tribe in the region. Eager for a new gig in the New World, Minuit leads two Swedish ships with Dutch crews - the Kalmar Nyckel and the Gripen - to the site of today's Wilmington, Delaware. Minuit would meet with the chiefs in the region and acquire, in one fashion or another, the west bank of the Delaware River from roughly the site of Philadelphia International Airport to Cape Henlopen. New Sweden would survive and at times prosper for 17 years, but Minuit, tragically, would not live more than six months after landing again in the New World. For more on Minuit's career in New Netherland, you might listen to "The Purchase of Manhattan and Other Dutch Treats." Good help is hard to find & the baggage crew at the Philadelphia International Airport did not resort to bringing in raccoons to fill the employment gap. Nevertheless, there was one that popped up amongst the suitcases. A collie went for a walk in the park & everyone loved petting & playing with the pooch. Only one small caveat: It was a $14,000 suit specifically made for a Japanese man who's greatest desire in life was to be a dog. An unfortunate demise for a manatee who had desires for his brother came when he died after some "high intensity sex". Stupidity is rampant in the animal kingdom, as it is with this week's episode... This week's guest is Philadelphia chef Kiki Aranita. You might know her from her Poi Dog food truck and subsequent restaurant of the same name. Unfortunately, due to the Covid pandemic, she had to shut down her restaurant. But Poi Dog has returned in the form of a line of bottled condiments including guava katsu sauce and chili peppah water. We talk about the evolution of her business, deciding to close the restaurant, and what it was like to start a consumer packaged goods product lineKiki was raised in both Hong Kong and Hawaii, so I really wanted to talk to her about her food experiences growing up, and why she chose to cook professionally. She also does a lot of food writing and recipe development for commercial brands. We discussed tips for those looking to work with brands. We also talked about her hobby of working with yarn, which has evolved from making dog sweaters to pieces that represent packaged foods such as Pocky and Takis. An exhibition of that work can concurrently be found at the Philadelphia International Airport until June 22'. Sponsor- The United States Personal Chef AssociationThe Covid pandemic has clearly redefined the world of dining. Despite over 110,000 restaurants closing around the country, people still want the ambiance and social connectivity that is so critical to the dining experience. Over the past 27 years, the world of the personal chef has grown in importance to fulfill those dining needs. While the pandemic certainly upended the restaurant experience, it provided an Avenue for personal chefs to close that dining gap. Central to all of that is the United States Personal Chef Association. Representing nearly 1,000 chefs around the US and Canada, USPCA provides a strategic backbone for those chefs that includes liability insurance, training, communications, certification, and more. One of the big upcoming events for USPCA is their annual conference scheduled July 7-10 at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, FL. Featuring a host of speakers and classes, the conference is a way for chefs to hone their skills and network with like-minded businesspeople. For those who supply the industry, it's a chance to reach not just decision-makers but the actual buyers of products.
