In labor news: Avianca (Colombia) completed hearings over pilot sanctions, laying off 107 pilots in total. Baggage handlers and maintenance workers at American Airlines were granted certification, enabling the claim to proceed as a class action lawsuit, in a case accusing the company of programming its time clocks to round down and reduce the amount of time employees are credited with working. The company’s timekeeping system credits workers for the period of time they are scheduled to work, but the system cuts off pay for those who put in a longer shift than scheduled, according to the suit. The suit claims violations of New Jersey’s Wage and Hour Law on behalf of American employees at Newark Liberty International Airport. In financial news: Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA) assigns preliminary ratings to three classes of notes (the “Notes”) issued by Sapphire Aviation Finance I Limited. Proceeds from the sale of the Notes will be used to acquire 41 aircraft that are initially leased to 30 lessees located in 19 countries with an initial total value of approximately $962.4 million. This transaction represents the second serviced securitization for Avolon Aerospace Leasing Limited (“AALL” or the “Company”) who is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Avolon Holdings Limited. AALL will act as servicer for the transaction. The Company was founded in May 2010 as an aircraft leasing company focused on acquiring, managing and trading commercial aircraft on lease to passenger airlines worldwide. As of December 31, 2017, the Company has an owned and committed fleet valuation of $46.5 billion with 153 customers in 64 countries and is the 3rd largest aircraft lessor globally. Also in financial news, we had a few earnings releases: EMBRAER had $246.8m net income on $5.84b revenues in 2017 vs $166.1m on $6.22b in 2016, and plans to deliver 85-95 commercial and 105-125 executive jets in 2018 vs 101/109 in 2017. Azul (Brazil) reports For 2017, net income rose 518% to $164.1 million, with revenues up 16.8% to $2.4 billion. The carrier ended the year with total cash position of $1.1 billion, and fleet of 122 aircraft. Rolls-Royce (UK) reports 2017 underlying revenue up 6% to $18.5 billion, with profit before tax up 25% to $1.2 billion. Fly Leasing (Ireland) reports For 2017, net income was $2.6 million on revenues of $353.2 million. and total cash was $456.8 million. FLY had 85 aircraft in its portfolio Other developments in aviation: CFM INTL has added LEAP-1A/LEAP-1B capability to its training center in Hyderabad. Cargolux (Luxembourg) and Nippon Cargo Airlines (Japan) are to partner on a new freighter service from Luxembourg to Narita on 27 March 2018, to be flown by B747-400F and B747-8Fs. Finally: IATA announced global passenger traffic results for January 2018 showing RPKs up 4.6% yoy, with ASKs up 5.3%, and LF down 0.5 points to 79.6%.

Looking at the headlines today, The creditors of Air Berlin decided to go ahead with a lawsuit against Etihad Airways, which used to be the biggest shareholder of the now insolvent airline. Air Berlin’s administrator said he is engaged in assessing the claims that could potentially exceed €1 billion in damages. In manufacture news, Rolls-Royce has recognised a charge of £227 million ($315 million) in its full-year results relating to costs associated with addressing in-service technical issues on Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 engines. Airbus announced plan in 2020 to drop annual production of A380s to six and A400Ms to eight. In Airline news, Hawaiian Airlines announced the decision to buy ten Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for a total of $2.82 billion, with an option for ten more. The Honolulu-based airline also announced cancelling its previous order of six Airbus A330-800neos. In Deliveries, Azul took delivery of one ATR72-600 leased from Nordic Aviation Capital. In Airlines and Financials, Cathay Pacific and Air Astana announced a codeshare agreement which will allow Cathay Pacific to have a better connectivity to Kazakhstan and Air Astana to have a better connectivity to Asia and Australia. Bombardier has made an agreement to sell about 500 Million US Dollar of its equity to a syndicate of underwriters in Canada. Uzbekistan Airways has decided to cease operating their IL-114-100 aircraft and replace them with Airbus A320s. In February 2018 traffic results, Volaris reported an increased passenger growth of 12% and increased total demand by 14.2% compared to february last year. Norwegian reported an increased passenger growth of 11.4% as compared to february last year Icelandair reported a decrease in number of passengers by 5% on international flights and 3 % on domestic flights as compared to February last year. And finally, In Regulatory news, The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has put a ban on eight carriers which is valid from February 28th, 2018 until May 31st, 2018. Starting with Airline news, after posting losses in 2017, Thai Airways is optimistic about turning things around in 2018 as the ICAO recently upgraded Thailand’s safety rating. Thai Airways is still waiting for the FAA to follow ICAOs verdict and raise the country's safety ratings, believing that the change in perception will help garner more overseas customers and increase the airlines revenue. Avianca posted a $245 million net profit in 2017 after adjusting for disruptions caused by a pilot strike in the fourth quarter of 2017. Before the adjustment, Avianca reported 82 million dollars in net profit, up 85% from 2016. This represents the strongest performance the airline has seen since its merger with TACA. Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky revealed that the company is thinking about launching a new airline to get into the end-to-end trip business. Metro Aviation ordered 25 H145e helicopters that will be produced in Airbus's plant in Mississippi. The order is vital for airbus as it will bridge the production line until the delivery and further orders of the militarized UH-72a for the US Army. Production of the type has been delayed by a three year legal battle between Leonardo Helicopters and Airbus that was finally resolved in favor of airbus early this year. Airbus has rolled out the first A350-900 ULR slated to enter service with Singapore Airlines. The aircraft will be used to restart direct flights between Singapore and North America, which used to be served by the A340-500s. Singapore Airlines is currently the only customer for the A350 ULR but Airbus is reported to be in talks with Qantas who has shown interest in the aircraft. Wow air closed a sale leaseback for an A321 with Sky aviation leasing marking the 36th aircraft placed for Sky. IAG engines has acquired a 747-400 , the CF6 powered aircraft was in storage at the time of acquisition but used to fly with KLM. ASL aviation has taken delivery of a 737-400F from vallair making it the largest European 737-400F operator. And Finally, Avmax took delivery of the last three Bombardier Q100s from an order of 27.

In leasing news today, China Huarong Financial Leasing has placed an order for 30 C919s and 20 ARJ21s. Norwegian has taken delivery of its final Boeing 737-800, with a total count of 118 737-800s within its fleet. Norwegian has outstanding orders for 12 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft deliveries in 2018. In mergers and acquisitions, Laudamotion has registered MSN 4329, the first A320 to be transferred from NIKI after the former airline's takeover. According to Reuters, Boeing will have a dominant (51%) share in the anticipated Boeing Embraer Joint Venture. American Airlines and Quantas have re-filed for anti-trust immunity with the US Department of Transportation to forma joint venture for North American- Oceanian routes. Seamless Air Alliance, a joint venture between Airbus, Delta, OneWeb, Sprint, and Airtel, has launched with the intention of providing high speed ground to air electronic connectivity. In regulatory news, the Georgia State Senate, led by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, threatened to block a bill provided additional tax breaks to Delta Airlines, following the Airline's removal of a discount program for National Rifle Association members. As part the requirements for the six-and-a-half billion dollar IMF facility offered in 3013, the Pakistani government has begin the privatization process for Pakistan International Airlines. The Pakistani Cabinet has approved a plant to sell a 49% stake in the company. In aviation industry forecasts, Aerospace Industries Association has issued a report forecasting a 150 billion dollar market for Large Commercial Unmanned Aircraft, with introduction expected over the next twenty years. IATA has announced a goal of 1 billion passengers flying on aircraft with engines powered by a combination of jet fuel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2025. Finally, Dubai International will be implementing a new security measure- an android with facial recognition, X-ray scanning, and thermal vision. The android will be connected to the Interpol database, and will also serve the purpose of greeting the public in the arrivals area. Air China suspends key North Korea route between Beijing and Pyongyang claiming the business was not good for service into isolated nation's capital. Meridiana has officially rebranded as Air Italy. The Carrier is to acquire three B737 MAXs and five A330-200s in 2018 and launch a codeshare with Qatar Airways. Avenue Capital, a New York based hedge fund, recently raised a US$600 million fund to buy aircraft. No aircraft types were disclosed yet. Fitch Ratings assigned ‘A’ long-term ratings to Boeing proposed issuance of US$1.4 billion of senior unsecured notes. The notes will be issued in four parts, with maturities of 2023, 2028, 2038, and 2048. Proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, but Fitch believes this issuance could be considered a refinancing of debt maturing later in 2018. Bombardier states that Pratt and Whitney's problem with the Geared turbofan engine has caused delays for the CSeries. Something that Bombardier has claimed was not an issue previously. Some Engines were late to arrive, and others had to be diverted to existing CSeries operators to meet spare engine requirements - all similar problems to what the A320s have seen. Assuming this is remedied, the OEM aims to deliver 40 CSeries aircraft in 2018 Jet Airways of India agreed to sell 13 737 MAX 8 aircraft to SMBC on sale leaseback. Over the weekend an Aseman Airlines ATR 72 impacted terrain. The French BEA will work with Iran's CAO on the investigation. Helicopter manufacturer Leonardo announced Friday they had signed a new revolving credit facility through a pool of 26 banks and book runners. This agreement provides Leonardo with a facility of €1.8 billion euro and is in response to the OEMs reduced liquidity needs Airbus delivered their first A350-1000 to launch customer Qatar Airways . The review will determine whether any operators have been purposely separating passengers intending on traveling together to additionally charge them for allocated seats that would allow them to sit together. The European Aviation Safety Agency and Airbus Helicopters have just implemented a new single Production Organization Approval to streamline certification processes. This POA replaces previous national approvals with a single, integrated framework allowing for simplified industrial exchanges between Airbus Helicopters’ manufacturing facilities across Europe. In Fleet Delivery News today… Tianjin Airlines took delivery of one A320neo Air Baltic took delivery of one Bombardier CSeries CS300 Virgin Atlantic Airways took delivery of one Airbus A330-200 News from Manufacturers today. Bell Helicopter said it experienced a 75% increase in global commercial orders in 2017. Contributing to that was the more than 200 orders the manufacturer received from China alone. Boeing debuted the first 737 MAX 7 at the company's Renton, Washington, factory. The MAX 7 is the third and newest member of Boeing’s 737 MAX family to come down the assembly line. The jet is designed for up to 172 passengers and a maximum range of 3,850 nautical miles, which is the longest range of the MAX airplane family. In Operator News flyadeal, the LCC owned by flag carrier Saudi Arabian Airlines, launched services to Abha on February 1st, with double-daily flights from both Riyadh and Jeddah Thai AirAsia launched two new routes from Thailand to China on 1 February with services commencing from Bangkok Don Mueang to Chengdu, and from Phuket to Kunming Despite the latest crash in Bitcoin and other digital currencies and the recent hacking of a major Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, Japan’s top budget carrier, Peach Aviation, still plans to accept bitcoin for airline tickets. However, the timing of the start of this service is in question, having originally planned to start accepting the cryptocurrency by the end of 2017, then pushing the start to early 2018 and this most recent announcement that they are waiting for the cryptocurrency market to settle. Fossco sells aircraft parts and components to airlines, repair shops, and completion centers In Lighter news A NASA satellite called IMAGE has been lost in space for 12 years. However, earlier this month a young astronomer from Canada stumbled onto signals from a satellite that was not accounted for; NASA confirmed on Tuesday this week that the re-discovered satellite is the lost in space satellite "IMAGE". Lessor News… PNC Aviation Finance posted a record year in 2017, having provided financing to more than 170 clients and originations for business aircraft up almost 40% from 2016. From Manufacturers today…. Boeing announces goal for 2018 of delivering a new plane every 11hours...The plane maker expects to deliver between 810 and 815 commercial airplanes in 2018 Airbus confirms its considering the possibility of including an increased stretched A320neo into the 320 family. for Operators news today… Hawaiian Airlines expects their 2018 Capital Expenditure to be between 375 million to 425 million. By the end of this year, they will have nine additional A321 neos and have retired all of their B767s. Hawaiian has confirmed that they have entered into an agreement to purchase three of their leased B767's and sell them on their own. Tobago Airways plans to launch operations in February 2018 with two aircraft. They will be servicing the Trinidad and Tobago Airbridge. According to their CEO, Raymond McMillan, the startup airline is currently seeking investers as they finalize approvals. Ethiopian Airlines and Guinea Airlines have signed a strategic partnership which covers sales management, maintenance and transferring of technology. EasyJet Europe took delivery of one A320-200 leased from Air Lease (US), as well as two A319s transferred from the carrier’s UK parent. VietJet Air took delivery of one new A321-200. Trujet inducted its fifth ATR72-600 into its fleet. In Earnings and Fundings Alaska Air Group reports its 4th Quarter 2017 net income of 367 million US Dollars, with total operating revenues up 29% to $1.9 billion. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES had $3.49b net income for 2017 on 3.7% higher revenues. It expects to increase its fleet from 706 to 750 aircraft by the end of 2018. United Airlines shares fell more than 6% in after-hours trading on 23 January 2018. In Management and Government Qatar and Kyrgyzstan signed an air services agreement.
In deliveries, three Boeing 737-800s were delivered to Aeroflot, Ryanair, and Shangdong Airlines. One A321-200 was delivered to VietJetAir. Boeing has announced the completion of flight tests for the 787-10 Dreamliner with Rolls Royce engines. Testing with GE engines has not yet concluded. Boeing has acknowledged that the blade issues on the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 for the 787-9 has been present across all carriers, rather than isolated to those with publisized flight disruptions due to groundings, such as Air New Zealand. Lockheed Martin has filed for a $212 Million Governement Reimbursement for restructuring costs of helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft, which it aquired for $9 billion USD in 2015. An $840 million class action suit has been brought against the FAA due to privacy concerns with regards to the drone registration database created by the National Defence Authorization Act passed into law in December Airlines for America, the primary US airline lobbyist group, spent a total of $8.59 million in 2017, a 34% increase from the previous year. According to a study by the London School of Economics, in-flight broadband is expected to expand to a $130 billion global market by 2035, which equates to an additional $3.21 in per passenger revenue. According to its financial statements, Quatar Airways has aquired, unannounced, an additional 0.33% equity holding in Cathay Pacific since its initial share acquisition in November HNA announced today that it has cleared due-diligene checks for JP Morgan, UBS, Creid Suisse, and others in the past few months, mitigating the concern of collapse. China Development Bank, which is highly exposed to the company, has announced its intent to support the company, as its collapse would not be in the general interest. The Civil Aviation Administration of China has contracted US companies Jeppesen and Honeywell to address the 72% of the country's civil airports that are not currently in the administation's aviation navigation database. Taiwan has denied Chinese Airlines China Eastern and Xiamen traffic rights during Chinese new year due to China's opening of four routes near the disputed martime border earlier this month. The Australian Government has launched its second probe into airline fares in response to citizen concerns over the significantly higher price tag of rural flights compared to hub-to-hub trips.

ASL currently has an additional four AEI B737-400SF freighters either currently undergoing conversion or scheduled for modification in 2018. · Air Lease Corporation (US) Executive Chairman warned of possible delays to deliveries of B737 MAX if LEAP-1B engines issues worsen. · Thai Airways International urged by the government to procure smaller aircraft to decrease operation and maintenance costs, in a bid to lower its debt and keep up with emerging LCCs. · Etihad (UAE) pulled its entire A330F fleet from service and placed the aircraft in storage, reportedly as part of its company-wide restructuring plan. · AerCap reports 4Q 2017 transactions, as follows: signed lease agreements for 46 aircraft; purchased 25 aircraft; executed sale transactions for 29 aircraft; signed financing transactions for US$1.7 billion; and exercised options with Airbus to purchase 50 A320neo Family aircraft, with deliveries starting from 2022. · ATR booked firm orders for 113 aircraft in 2017, along with 40 options. ATR delivered 80 aircraft, reached a book-to-bill ratio of 1.45, and secured a solid backlog representing three years of production. ATR also stabilized its annual turnover at US$ 1.8 billon. · Embraer announced the E190-E2 proved in flight tests to be 1.3% better than originally expected, which represents a 17.3% improvement when compared to the current generation E190, and nearly 10% better than its direct competitor. · Triumph Group (US) signed an agreement with Boeing to provide major structural assemblies for the B767 program, including the production of horizontal stabilizers, doors, aft fuselage and center wing sections. · Hawaiian Airlines (US) and Japan Airlines jointly applied for blanket statements of authorization from the US regulators to engage in codeshare operations for an indefinite period, effective 25 March 2018. · NIKI (Austria) founder Niki Lauda won the bidding for the airline he founded, convincing the insolvent carrier’s administrators in marathon talks and undoing an agreed deal with IAG (UK). · TrueAero (US) appointed Ian Nicholson as VP – Technical Operations, effective January 2nd, 2018. · Royal Air Maroc (Morocco) is making final adjustments to its new strategy, which includes doubling of the fleet and more long-haul services out of Casablanca. Carrier has four B787s arriving between December 2018 and March 2019, with four B737 MAX arriving between 2018 and June 2019. · Avolon (Ireland) is sheltered from problems facing parent HNA Group (China), but its credit profile would benefit from a guarantee that it would not be forced to bail out the group, ratings analysts said.

In fleet and deliveries Virgin Atlantic (UK) took delivery of one new B787-9 Brussels Airlines (Belgium) took delivery of one A320-200, leased from Avolon (Ireland). Scoot (Singapore) took delivery of one A320-200, leased from Pembroke Capital (Ireland). Copa Airlines (Panama) took delivery of one new B737-800. Norwegian Air UK took delivery of one new B787-9, leased from Avolon (Ireland). EasyJet Europe (Austria) took delivery of one A319, transferred from its parent, as well as one A320-200, leased from ICBC Leasing (China). BOC Aviation (Singapore) to lease seven A320neos to Chongqing Airlines (China), all scheduled for delivery in 2018. Today ATR announced a deal with Silver Airways for 20 new aircraft. 16 ATR-600s and four 72-600 aircraft. This marks the first time ATR-600 will be operated in the US. With orders from Silver Airways Fedex, Indigo and Iran air last year, ATR has garnered 113 firm orders in 2017, compared to 36 in 2016. The latest deal with Silver Airways is also significant to Nordic Aviation Capital as it will be the 100th new aircraft order placed by the leader in regional aircraft leasing. Airbus Helicopters announced its results for last year that saw orders fall in 2017 compared to 2016 with 350 orders at the end of the year compared to 388 last year. Deliveries were also down this year with 409 helicopters delivered compared to 418 in 2016. Despite this, Airbus still maintains its 50% market share of the civil and parapublic helicopter market. One segment that Airbus has particularly struggled with in the past year is its heavy twins in the civil market segment. The super puma has failed to garner new orders in the oil and gas industry after the bad publicity that followed a fatal crash in 2016. Despite this military orders for the Super Puma family of aircraft remain strong keeping the program alive while the offshore passenger transport industry is recovering In Airline and traffic news Iberia (Spain) to start A350-900 service to New York and London in August 2018. Gulf Air (Bahrain) to start B787-9 service from Bahrain to London Heathrow on 15 June 2018, replacing A330. Panama says TAP Air Portugal and Air Europa (Spain) are interested in opening service to the country. Air Greenland appointed acting CEO Jacob Sorensen as its new CEO TAP Air Portugal President Fernando Pinto says the cabin crew strike set for early February 2018 is “illegal”. Ryanair (Ireland) pilots in Spain have threatened to take ‘legal actions’ against the carrier over their employment rights if they do not meet with company representatives by next week. Air Berlin (Germany) creditors reportedly threaten a lawsuit of up to US$2.4 billion-dollarst against Etihad (UAE). Iberia (Spain) to take delivery of its first of 20 A320neos in May, and its first A350-900 in June 2018. Nordic Aviation Capital (Ireland) delivered one ATR72-500, to Aeronova (Spain) on lease. In Airline and Traffic News… JetSMART (Chile) started Santiago de Chile – Lima service on 15 January 2018, with A320. Evelop (Spain) to start new A330-300 service from Lisbon to San Jose in April 2018. Backbone Aviation (Denmark) announces suspension of operations, as it “failed” to execute its business plan. LATAM Argentina worker unions announced a strike on 19 January 2018 over a pay dispute. I'm emily,..thank you A passenger was removed from a British Airways flight for opting to wear rather than pack his clothes, all in an attempt to avoid the $125 baggage fee charged by the airline. The passenger was reportedly arrested after filming his questioning of the gate agent. The passenger then tried to return to London the following day via an EasyJet flight, but was removed by the captain who cited the incident the previous day. He eventually made it home on another airline.

Spirit in the US announced prliminary that it's load factor increased 0.1% Avianca and subsidiaries decreased its load factor by 69 basis points, compared to 2016. Cathay pacific announced a slight decrease of 0.4%, alothough its ASK increasedc by 4.1% IATA announced traffic was up 8% Year over Year in november, the strongest gain in months. Forecasted 2018 to remain above the trend, but with a slower expansion than 2017.
