When Steve Rockwood discovered his ancestor's journal as a child, he never imagined how family stories would shape his future as President of FamilySearch International. In our conversation, Steve reveals how a 7th-generation Bostonian's writings sparked his sense of belonging, while his Danish great-grandmother's solo journey across the Atlantic became the untold DNA story he treasures most. Steve shares how a recent family history trip with his 93-year-old mother brought "Grandma Chandler" to life through forgotten newspaper accounts—proving that records kept "for a wise purpose" reveal their value generations later. Whether you're building your family tree as a "driver" or enjoying discoveries as a "passenger," Steve's insights on capturing character stories and engaging today's "most journaling generation" will transform how you share your family's legacy and keep your growing family connected through powerful stories. 〰️
The first time I saw a portrait by Shervin Lainez, I felt like I was hearing the artist's music through a photograph. There's an intimacy in the image, a quiet buzz that goes deeper than just the artist's face—it captures an essence. His work has graced the pages of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and countless album covers, shaping the way we see some of the most defining voices in modern music. If you've ever admired a striking image of Adele, Billie Eilish, St. Vincent, Tame Impala, or Orville Peck, chances are you've seen Shervin's work. But what makes his photography so compelling isn't just the technical execution—it's his philosophy. Shervin doesn't take pictures; he builds connections. He listens to an artist's music, immerses himself in their world, and lets that inform the way he shoots. His style is adaptable—what he calls chameleon-like—but always true to the artist in front of his lens. As he describes in this conversation, his long years in the game have taught him that the real magic of photography isn't about the perfect lighting setup or the ideal location. It's about trust, energy, and presence. If he walks into a shoot anxious or distracted, the artist will mirror that. If he brings ease, they'll meet him there.I met Shervin back in 2013 or so. I had a show at the Rockwood in NYC and some artist I respect had their photos done by this cool guy in the city. I wasn't sure I could get him, but we figured out a place and in an hour I had a cache of photos I used for literal years. I mean, in addition to giving me something I could use and be proud of, he gave this awkward introvert a truly great experience. We talk about that experience and my perceptions of it. And, true story: after we taped this episode he shot a new round of photos for me, one of which is the main image I'm using across all my socials. A nice full circle moment. In this conversation, Shervin opens up about his relentless pursuit of his craft—the years he spent shooting for free, honing his skills by trial and error, refusing formal education, and pushing forward despite uncertainty. He breaks down the difference between ambition and expectation, explaining how wanting to grow as an artist is healthy, but expecting instant success can be toxic. His journey is a testament to the idea that success isn't about demanding the next big opportunity—it's about doing great work until the right people take notice. We also talk about mentorship, creative obsession, and the art of saying yes before you feel ready. Shervin shares why he never assisted another photographer, his feeling on “Can I pick your brain?” emails, and why his only real advice to young creatives is "just do it—over and over again". If you've ever struggled with self-doubt, comparison, or the pressure to succeed on someone else's timeline, this episode is for you.If you get something out of The Morse Code Podcast, please follow us on Apple Pods or Spotify or write a 5 star review or follow us on instagram or Tiktok or all of these things. Part 1- This weekend's columns in the Winnipeg Sun are reviewed, as important issues we've covered all year long came to a head. The vaunted Metro Region Plan20-50 was deep-sixed, Wab Kinew finally decided illegal encampments had to go and stay gone, and former Winnipeg broadcaster Dahlia Kurtz is organizing the fight against Jew-haters, declaring, “Our leaders have failed us. We will not fail us.” We fill in some details- and there's news about terrorist-supporting mobs taking over malls during Christmas across the country you probably haven't heard about yet. 11.44 Part 2 - From the Sun column on Sunday: In 2021, Mayor Cheryl Christian of West St. Paul told the media, "Plan 2050 will have significant impact on all businesses, citizens and property owners living within the Winnipeg Metro Region boundaries." She was sounding the alarm- but after the blueprint document that included the power of expropriation emerged from WRM backrooms, the City of Winnipeg did nothing to get the people of Winnipeg informed or made aware. It all blew up at the Niverville public hearing, and you'll hear how the scene unfolded from Don Woodstock and Marty, after the WMR board foisted dealing with hundreds of affected residents stuck in the lobby on their diminutive Executive Director. Woodstock, who operates a security firm, addressed them when she floundered and tried to placate the crowd. He describes how shortly after, most of the board had snuck out a side door and none of them explained their postponement ruling to the restless crowd in person. A discussion of the roles of mismanagement of the public hearings, Mayor Scott Gillingham, a biased media, and Wab KInew's play to support the dissenting RM's gets analyzed. * EVERY PODCAST EPISODE CAN BE HEARD AT https://actionline.ca/podcast/ WITH ADDED IMAGES AND GRAPHICS * From the column: “While Gillingham and WMR staff insisted opposing views were based on “misinformation”, within two weeks, a total of 12 out of the 18 member municipalities had rejected the plan, including one (Rockwood) that claimed the consultants had never even spoken to them before tabling a document that would determine future development in their district.” This is story of the year because it was a power grab and it cost a lot of money to be just be blown up by the people responsible for it's failure and stick taxpayers with the bill. The narrative of “it's conspiracy theories” fell to the legitimacy of the concerns about democracy. Listen to what really forced the WMR to unanimously scuttle the plan. We are almost at the fundraising goal for Season 5 of $5600 ! Make a year-end contribution via ActionLine.ca using Paypal or E-Transfer and receive a rare copy of the Black & White photographic history of 1970's Winnipeg, Retropeg! 26.15 - More from the Sun column: The NDP's Bill 4 would revoke making participation mandatory. That means elected officials in places like Niverville, Headingley, East St. Paul, and Winnipeg will have to vote on maintaining WMR membership. Woodstock and Marty explore what sort of delegations with questions might appear when City Hall has to do what every other WRM member will – hold a public vote about continuing to be a WRA member. With Gillingham being on the Metro executive committee, questions will arise about Plan20-50 expenses, consulting costs, and potential conflicts of interest (Woodstock says out loud what was only whispered until now- "their friends and their cronies"). Taxpayers deserve answers about the lack of return on investment, and why Gilliingham and city planners went along with the scheme to override elected RM's autonomy, which was confirmed by Municipal Affairs Minister Glen Simard as being why the province stepped in. As for the slanted portrayal of Plan20-50 opponents by Winnipeg's broadcast media as 'misinformed crazies', Woodstock says "you should be ashamed." COMING UP- THE TOP TEN PODCASTS OF 2024 -AND THE SEASON 5 FUNDING DRIVE CONCLUDES.

For the show's 150th episode Parvez & Omar are joined by the second guest ever to appear on the podcast, Zahra Billoo , Civil rights Attorney and Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA). Zahra brings her years of tireless Civil Rights work and activism to bear as she discusses the recent protests and encampments taking place across college campuses placing them within the broader Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and discussing their overall goals and objectives. The conversation also tackles the criticisms that such protests and encampments have garnered from voices outside of and within the Muslim community, as well as certain initiatives and organizations that some argue seek to normalize relations with the State of Israel and Zionism. About Zahra Billoo Zahra Billoo serves as the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) office, the oldest CAIR chapter office. Since joining in 2009, Zahra has led the organization through a period of six-fold growth. Today, she manages one of the largest CAIR offices in the country with a team of civil rights and social justice advocates dedicated to the empowerment of American Muslims through legal services, legislative advocacy, and community organizing. Under Zahra's leadership, CAIR-SFBA has filed lawsuits against the United States Department of Justice, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Southwest Airlines, representing American Muslims facing discriminatory treatment. CAIR-SFBA has also significantly expanded its capabilities to provide know-your-rights sessions on a nearly weekly basis to mosques and community members in the San Francisco Bay Area, while also providing direct legal representation to Bay Area residents facing numerous civil rights violations, including FBI interviews, employment discrimination, airport harassment, school bullying, and hate crimes. Zahra's advocacy has included media appearances in local and national media, including MSNBC, NPR, the San Francisco Chronicle, and even FOX News. Among her awards, she received the 2017 Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers and the 2018 Community Builder Award from People Acting in Community Together (PACT). She was also listed by the San Jose Mercury News as a “Woman to Watch” in March 2017 for Women's History Month, as well as by the Chronicle of Philanthropy in their January 2018 cover story on millennials who lead. She is currently a fellow with Levi Strauss Foundation Pioneers in Justice, a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum's Silicon Valley Chapter and an alumna of Rockwood's Fellowship for a New California, LeaderSpring's Executive Directors Fellowship, and USC's American Muslim Civil Leadership Institute. Zahra earned her undergraduate degrees from the California State University, Long Beach, and her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hastings. She is licensed to practice law in California.

Success is closer than you think!Michelle Rockwood, author of Joyful Selling, unintentionally became a sales coach. She realized she had something others did not; a skill, a passion, and a joy for sales coaching. Michelle believes strongly in creating a connection with people we are supporting and coaching, in making offers to people who really need them, and in ensuring we are prepared as we work in sales. There is a distinct difference in masculine and feminine sales energy, and Michelle realized that the majority of sales training programs are written and delivered by men. It's no wonder women are uncomfortable with this way of selling, and sometimes make our stomach churn, and often don't find any joy in it. The goal is for you and the client alike to have an authentic sales experience that you both enjoy. This comes from authentically connecting with the client and ensuring we slow down and work smarter, not harder. It IS possible to have a sales conversation that you actually enjoy!Notes:
Brady talks with Windsor, VT native and University of Maine women's basketball player Olivia Rockwood in advance of the America East women's basketball title game against UVM.
Tom Dun, Candidate for Rockwood School Board, joins Marc & Kim to talk about why he's running for the Rockwood School Board, what needs to change, and what he hopes to accomplish if elected.
