Clara Collier recently reviewed If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies in Asterisk Magazine. I've been a reader of Asterisk since the beginning and had high hopes for her review. And perhaps it was those high hopes that led me to find the review to be disappointing. Collier says “details matter,” and I absolutely agree. As a fellow rationalist, I've been happy to have nerds from across the internet criticizing the book and getting into object-level fights about everything from scaling laws to neuron speeds. While they don't capture my perspective, I thought Scott Alexander and Peter Wildeford's reviews did a reasonable job at poking at the disagreements with the source material without losing track of the big picture. But I did not feel like Collier's review was getting the details or the big picture right. Maybe I'm missing something important. Part of my motive for writing this “rebuttal” is [...] ---Outline:(01:38) FOOM(13:47) Gradualism(20:27) Nitpicks(35:35) More Was PossibleThe original text contained 3 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: September 20th, 2025 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/JWH63Aed3TA2cTFMt/contra-collier-on-iabied --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.
We’re taking this week off! But don’t worry, we’ll be back with new episodes starting September 10th. In the meantime, we’re sharing some of our favorite interviews from the year so far. This week, Oz talks with writer Nathaniel Rich about one of the biggest challenges of sending humans to Mars: isolation. Nathaniel Rich is a novelist, essayist and writer-at-large for The New York Times Magazine. Rich sits down with Oz to talk about his essay, “Can Humans Endure the Psychological Torment of Mars?” The piece explores NASA's CHAPEA (“Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog”) mission, a simulation meant to test a major challenge of Mars missions – isolation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rob and Ed took some time from Monday's BBMS to recap OKC's title-clinching win over the Pacers and then discuss how we should view that title considering how they won it. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton left the game early in the 1st quarter and Indiana couldn't replace his production. Does that mean we should put an asterisk on the Thunder's win?

"We can have a reseller up and running in like three days. It's that easy." — Jake Jacoby, Founder, TELCLOUD In this latest installment of the POTS and Shots series, Doug Green, publisher of Technology Reseller News, sits down once again with Jake Jacoby of TELCLOUD to explore why becoming a POTS replacement reseller has never been easier — or more profitable. No headaches. No barriers. All opportunity. Jake breaks down how TELCLOUD's white-label, channel-first model empowers resellers to deliver turnkey POTS line replacement solutions without having to build out the backend. Whether you're bringing your own connectivity or PBX, or need the full stack, TELCLOUD fills in the gaps — and fast. Resellers can be live, branded, and billing customers within three days. Built for channel success: TELCLOUD is purpose-built to support channel partners with: White-label branding and sales collateral Full 3PL, sourcing, compliance, installation, and support Hybrid deployment models: crawl, walk, run Partnerships with Crexendo, Alianza, and others Support for legacy infrastructure (BroadSoft, Metaswitch, Asterisk, Ericsson, and more) And the need is real. With over a billion lines globally to replace, Jake urges resellers not to leave critical use cases—like elevator or fire alarm lines—on the table. “Your customers already trust you. They want you to bring the full solution.” Think beyond POTS — think bulletproof connectivity. Doug and Jake also dive into the adjacent opportunity in unbreakable Internet. With TELCLOUD's integrated fixed wireless access and broadband bundles, partners can offer redundant, wireless-first connectivity that blends LTE, broadband, and even satellite to ensure uptime for their clients. And for the shot? Jake introduces “El Mejor,” an extra añejo tequila aged over five years in Napa oak barrels. Smooth, deep, and rich — much like the TELCLOUD opportunity itself. “You'll want to keep this one on your shelf,” says Jake. Next up: Beyond the Sale — how POTS replacement builds long-term loyalty. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios has been in the news a lot during the last week with varying topics. We'll break them down, but first some bullet points.- Thunderbolts* took the top spot at the box office with a $76 million domestic opening and a global total of $162.1 million. For those CinemaScore fans, the movie is sitting at an A-. SPOILER ALERT: The studio also flipped the title of the movie based on the events that occur within it and the film is now being marketed as The New Avengers - the big reveal of what the asterisk stood for. Marvel Comics even joined in with this gag, revealing today that a previously announced new series called New Thunderbolts* is actually going to be called The New Avengers.- Jeremy Renner was interviewed by podcast High Performance about his new memoir “My Next Breath,” and revealed Marvel offered him a role in a second season of Hawkeye, but only offered half the salary he received in season one.- The Hollywood Reporter has received information from sources saying that Ryan Reynolds is in the early stages of developing a new Deadpool movie that would feature X-Men characters with Deadpool potentially in a supporting role.- Lastly, Fantastic Four: First Steps Director Matt Shakman revealed that voice actor Matthew Wood is doing the voice work for the role of HERBIE in the film. Wood is known for voicing General Grievous and has worked in sound for Lucasfilm and Disney for many years.Perhaps the biggest story to hit Hollywood since the writers/actors strikes a few years ago, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform on Monday that he aims to start including Hollywood in his tariff plan. In his comments, Trump announced he wants to institute a 100% tariff on movies coming into the United States and that are produced in foreign countries. It is unclear how this would be implemented at this time as films are not goods. However, many films take advantage of tax incentives offered by states and countries to film in their locations and these could be affected. In an already turbulent time for Hollywood, what could this mean for the future?FX has officially confirmed an upcoming season two of its Emmy-award winning series Shogun. The series co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks recently wrapped a writers room for the coming season which will begin production in January of 2026.Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct Road House 2, the sequel to Amazon MGM Studios' hit action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Will Beall, whose credits range from comic book movies such as Aquaman to action movies including Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is writing the script.Sgt. Rock, DC Studios' action war movie that was to shoot this summer, will no longer move forward at the current schedule due to location shooting issues. The film, set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and star Colin Farrell, apparently needs to be shot during the summer and not the winter, which held up production. Insiders tell the Hollywood Reporter that the project is not necessarily going away however, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.Chris Hemsworth has been cast to star in Subversion, a submarine thriller that Patrick Vollrath will direct for Amazon MGM.Star Wars: The Last Order, is a newly-announced novel, written by Kwame Mbalia and will look at Finn and Jannah's mission to save more children from the First Order. The novel will be released this year on October 21.AppleTV+ has renewed Seth Rogan-led series The Studio for a second season ahead of its May 21 season one finale.Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will release in theaters on September 18, 2026.In box office news, Sinners crossed $240 million worldwide while A Minecraft Movie continues to creep to a billion dollars with an $875 million worldwide total.

Asterisk invited me to participate in their “Weird” themed issue, so I wrote five thousand words on evil Atlantean cave dwarves. As always, I thought of the perfect framing just after I'd sent it out. The perfect framing is - where did Scientology come from? How did a 1940s sci-fi writer found a religion? Part of the answer is that 1940s sci-fi fandom was a really fertile place, where all of these novel mythemes about aliens, psychics, and lost civilizations were hitting a naive population certain that there must be something beyond the world they knew. This made them easy prey not just for grifters like Hubbard, but also for random schizophrenics who could write about their hallucinations convincingly. …but I didn't think of that framing in time, so instead you get several sections of why it's evil cave dwarves in particular, and why that theme seems to recur throughout all lands and ages: https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/deros-and-the-ur-abduction-in-asterisk https://asteriskmag.com/issues/09/deros-and-the-ur-abduction
Jake Eaton has a great article on misophonia in Asterisk. Misophonia is a condition in which people can't tolerate certain noises (classically chewing). Nobody loves chewing noises, but misophoniacs go above and beyond, sometimes ending relationships, shutting themselves indoors, or even deliberately trying to deafen themselves in an attempt to escape. So it's a sensory hypersensitivity, right? Maybe not. There's increasing evidence - which I learned about from Jake, but which didn't make it into the article - that misophonia is less about sound than it seems. Misophoniacs who go deaf report that it doesn't go away. Now they get triggered if they see someone chewing. It's the same with other noises. Someone who gets triggered by the sound of forks scraping against a table will eventually get triggered by the sight of the scraping fork. Someone triggered by music will eventually get triggered by someone playing a music video on mute. Maybe this isn't surprising? https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/misophonia-beyond-sensory-sensitivity

Does your heart stop when you sneeze? Does coughing help you poop? How about picturing a dog pooping? We kick off today's show with Dan getting offended by Amin's pejorative nickname of Asterisk Man, Greg Cote's old song as the singing sportswriter, and Paul George's complaints over still not receiving a tribute video in Indiana. Then, Tony is our resident Jacksonville Jaguars expert and joins us from his paternity leave to break down the proper way to say DUUUUUUUUUVAAL not DUUUVALLLLLL. Plus, we hear from a ghost that is great at trivia, and we go back about a month to the state of University of Miami basketball after Jim Larranaga's retirement. Learn more about your ad choices. Dan is a big-time asterisk guy according to Amin, and Billy is celebrating National Curmudgeon Day. Then, is fandom more fun when you're shutting people up? And is Tyreek Hill jealous of what's happening in Kansas City even though he's received more money and praise since he left? Plus, Stugotz stole a take from Billy who stole it from Bill Barnwell who was kidding, but Chris stole the same take from Jessica who was definitely not kidding. Also, is radio row Stugotz the most reliable Stugotz? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

OSU Natty Coverage Continues!!!!
We had Kid A.G. and Red Eye in the studio, and they were like two alley cats fighting over the last piece of trash. The fun started when they got into the nitty-gritty of jacking off with your fucking feet. I mean, who knew you could paint a masterpiece with your toes? Red Eye, bless her dirty soul, dished out where she likes to take a load - and let's just say it's not just in the usual spots. They talked about some crazy St. Paddy's Day debauchery, where everyone's so drunk they can't tell their dick from a beer bottle. They rant on TikTok and Instagram, calling it a digital orgy of stolen content. They even went into how fucking annoying Dry January is for bartenders because, hello, who the fuck wants to serve water all month? But the kicker was the debate on grape juice making your dick hard – because why not turn something as mundane as juice into a Viagra substitute? They dived deep into the bizarre world of a Michigan butthole beauty pageant where you better scrub your ass like it's your last day on earth unless you want to smell like a fish market. And for fuck's sake, they tried to make some music with AI, but it was like trying to get a nun to say "fuck" – just didn't happen. Then there was the discussion on polyamory, where Red Eye shared some tales that would make your grandma blush. They even talked about the modern-day horror of having to submit your ID to jerk off to porn in Florida. They didn't shy away from the topic of sex toys either, diving into Red Eye's collection like it was a fucking treasure chest of debauchery. From tentacle dildos to torso sex dolls, they covered it all, making you wonder if you're the only one not living in a personal sex shop. And let's not forget the mention of Nicole Kidman's latest flick with some spicy scenes, proving even Hollywood isn't immune to a bit of kink. They wrapped up with some laughs about the hypocrisy of social media privacy versus government oversight, and how you might as well write your name on your lover's tits if you want something personalized in this digital age of recycled porn.
