The Elgin Sustainability Commission met on Tuesday, March 12th at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin. An efficient meeting by all measurements with virtually no tangents, side conversations, talking over each other, and long-winded echoing of each other. Maybe it was because the commission's City Councilperson liaison -- Carol Rauschenberger -- wasn't in attendance. *wink* (Just kidding, Carol). Truthfully, it is more likely the influence of the commission's new lion tamer (aka Sustainability Analyst/city staffer) Kristin Youngmeyer. In this episode, Tia Aagesen & Erik Anderson summarize the agenda items and discussions. They also do another deep dive on the issue of the commission's 2024 Priorities. The following is a laundry list of what you will hear talked about in this episode:Kimball Street dam removalElgin Earth Month in April 2024Elgin Earth Summit on April 20thElgin Climate Action Plan RFP and submissionsSoon-To-Be new addition to the city's sustainability staff team2024 Budget for the Elgin Sustainability CommissionZero Emissions Yard Equipment Rebate programSingle Use Bag Fee ordinance2024 Priorities for the Sustainability CommissionThere were two kinda/sorta big announcements at the end of the meeting:The next Strong Towns Elgin meeting is happening on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Light Lounge at Vern's Tavern. Did you play youth soccer growing up? I did. Two electrifying seasons on the Fighting Cougars under the capable but somewhat volcanic leadership of Coach Terry. Coach Terry was determined to turn my brother Darren and me into skilled soccer players. He failed, but that didn't diminish the fun at. I loved my steel gray uniform, my teammates, the post-match snacks, and especially the striking, hand drawn banner we played under featuring a fearsome cougar. In this week's message from Acts 2:14-21, I "kick off" with a recent soccer story that illustrates one of the big ideas of our post-Easter series: "The Resurrection: The Biggest Surprise Ever." The story's fun but the point it illustrates is fundamental. I hope you'll join us live at 10:00 AM. I recommend arriving 20 minutes early and "prophesying" to your friends over coffee in the Light Lounge. Don't know what I mean? Join us on Sunday and it will all make sense. When I was a kid growing up at 1994 Plaza Montez in San Jose, I spent a lot of time outside with the neighbor kids. The environs were safe and secure with one big exception: the bee bush. Our neighbors had a bush that teemed with little buzzing yellow and black things every spring and summer. If the tennis ball we used for our contentious games of Strike Out ended up in the bee bush, it was "Goodbye ball" 'cuz we weren't getting within 25 yards of that bush and those stingers. The ancient king at the center of the rescue story of Psalm 118 talks about bees in his recounting of how the LORD rescued him from certain disaster. What does all this have to do with Palm Sunday? You'll have to come to the worship service this Sunday at 10:00 AM to find out. If you do, I recommend that you arrive 20 minutes early for a cup of coffee and a chat with friends in our radiant new "Light Lounge." Of course, if you're travelling or if you're downing Dayquil by the quart because of a nasty cold, it might be better for you to join in on the livestream. Everyone at Hillside can't wait to see you!
