They opened up about their individual encounters with the IB program, sharing their challenges, turning points, personal growth, and insights gained along the journey.   During their conversation, Hannah recounts a story from one of her peers who expressed that the IB program showed them the extent of their capabilities and motivated them to push themselves to achieve their potential within a limited timeframe.   The two students also discussed their subject selection process. Angelina shares her initial struggle with three course clashes at the beginning of the IB program. However, she later discovered a newfound love for subjects she hadn't initially considered. Her IB learning journey, she explains, has been "evolving" and "challenging".  Hannah explains that her passion for industrial design in university led her to choose Design Technology and Visual Arts. Although her first choice of history wasn't available, she luckily ended up in Geography, which has now become her favorite subject. Hannah describes her IB experience as both "empowering" and "driving".   Angelina reflects on the significance of making independent decisions when choosing courses, stating "it was the first time that you're making a decision on your own." She recalls that the personal project in Grade 10 paved the way for this type of decision-making, but the IB program granted her even greater space and control.    For Hannah, one of the most empowering aspects of the IB program is the opportunity to pursue her interests. Her IB education has made her aware of her passion for social justice. She also mentions people need to pay attention to maintaining mental health. "We are IB students, but at the same time we're also teenagers", said Hannah. She emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between academic commitments and personal well-being.   Both Angelina and Hannah feel that WAB provides an ideal environment for students to pursue their IB studies. "We're in such an incredible environment where your voice is really heard," said Angelina.   To hear details about these students' IB experience, don't miss out on this episode presented by the HS student club Inkblot.

As Europe's most prominent machine tool exhibition, the bi-annual event will open its doors under the motto ‘Innovate Manufacturing' and more than 1,750 exhibitors from 42 countries will be presenting their latest innovations, strategies and solutions that stretch the full spectrum of business, connectivity and sustainability topics in the production engineering arena.  Show organisers VDW embarked on a ‘world tour' throughout the summer to emphasise both the relevance and importance of the exhibition to the global manufacturing industry. When the touring party hit the UK in May, Dr Wilfried Schafer, the Executive Director of EMO organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders Association) was keen to emphasise the importance of the show on the world platform and how the technology could have a positive impact for UK manufacturers.  As the world's leading trade fair for production technology, the international event claims to think way outside the box in both social and technological terms. To this end, EMO Hannover is focusing especially on the megatrend of sustainability – a topic that is of particular importance globally. Alongside the optimisation of numerous organisational processes, the complete machining of components is one of the main technological solutions for making production more efficient and consequently more sustainable. Under the ‘Future of Sustainability in Production' banner and on the joint stand of the same name, EMO Hannover 2023 is dedicating itself to the topic of sustainability as a task that society as a whole needs to address. Climate, environmental targets and the scarcity of certain raw materials are now making a rethink necessary – and all will be discussed in the ‘Future of Sustainability in Production' trend topic at EMO. Based on the current production technology methods, the manufacture of steel, aluminium, plastics and cement alone would generate about 800 gigatons of CO2 in the 21st century, calculates Prof. Dr Holger Kohl, Deputy Director and Head of the Corporate Management business unit at the Fraunhofer-IPK (Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology), Berlin. This would mean that the two-degree target of the Paris climate agreement would already have been missed. That is why it is so important for such materials to be recycled in some kind of circular economy, emphasizes Kohl, who is also a member of the German Academic Association for Production Technology (WGP).  As a rule, machine tools are already designed to give many years of trouble-free profitable operation. However, in the case of lathes. milling or grinding machines, the following also applies: “The amount of time it takes for the precision and reliability levels to diminish depends on the basic design of the machine, how heavily it is used and how well it is maintained,” explains Paul Kössl, Global Head of Business and Marketing at the international United Grinding Group, headquartered in Switzerland, which will be showcasing various brands at EMO.  Of course, EMO isn't all about sustainability – but it is becoming increasingly prevalent. If you're making a trip to the show from the UK, you need it to be justifiable to your business - and this is why process optimisation and productivity will be on the lips of most exhibitors and visitors alike at the biannual tradeshow. Most precision tool specialists and manufacturers of grinding and machining centres are very familiar with process optimisation. So, at EMO industrial and scientific experts will be showing which manufacturing technologies are available for the complete production of even highly complex components via a complete programme of seminars.  In Hannover, visitors will be treated to practical presentations on a huge variety of technically optimised processing possibilities that are aimed at making production more sustainable and profitable. Around 30 member companies of the VDMA Precision Tools and VDMA Measuring and Testing Technology have registered to deliver presentations at EMO on the topics of machining, clamping technology, measuring and testing technology, OPC UA and digitisation. So, if you are heading over to Hannover this month, it may be worth taking in some of the technical presentations as well as seeing the almost endless range of innovative new technologies.

Dan Stine is Director of Design Technology at Lake|Flato Architects. You could also say he wrote the book on architecture–or at least the top-selling textbook on Revit. As if that weren't enough, he teaches graduate architecture classes and is active with Committee on the Environment (COTE).We start out with a brief overview of Dan's work with COTE. Then we ask Dan to share about some of the technology he has had the opportunity to explore in his various roles. Dan discusses Tonic DM, a tool for email management and file-sharing management. Dan explains that he has found the cloud-based service to be stable and reliable. It also assists with the handling of project-management information. Tyler asks about Revit plugins and other time-savers. Dan says that Enscape has become widely used within his firm. He also discusses Forma (formerly called Spacemaker), which is especially helpful with wind and solar installations. We explore generative AI software, and Dan mentions that Enscape integrates some AI. He geeks out on some processing core technologies. Dan shares about UpCodes, a searchable platform for building codes that dramatically expedites code research. UpCodes saves time by integrating amendments based on local jurisdictions. As we discuss AI, Tyler shares his exploration of Adobe Photoshop's AI integration, adding lamps and furniture. He was impressed.Tyler asks Dan to discuss the challenges of integrating new technologies. Dan says that the most important thing is evaluating the software to ensure that it's worthy of being added to the team's repertoire. Once a tool makes it through that step, deployment and support becomes easier to systematize. It's all about ensuring that qualified people are available to instruct and support those who will be using the tool.Dan shares a bit about the Dell Latitude tablets that he and his team used in a recent video shoot with Tyler. Then he runs through the array of equipment Lake|Flato uses to support its hybrid-work structure. Data-security geeks will be interested to hear the VPN/work-station/server configuration he describes. He shares about Lake|Flato's hybrid structure and how it is supported by their use of FlowScape virtual office spaces.Tyler explains how the video editing for the podcast will be changing based on the things he learned during the video shoot with Dan.Dan's Megaphone Message: Thanks for creating all the crazy stuff that architects design. In this episode, I met with Bill Kyzner (IB Teacher of Global Politics) and Garrett McKee (IB Teacher of Design Technology) to discuss Prompt 10: What challenges are raised by the dissemination and/or communication of knowledge? We explored the relationship between the communicator, the message, and the audience along with the challenges raised in each of these stages. We first unpacked the assumption that there will be misinterpretation: what is said is not what will be received. Some of the many challenges we discussed include: the layered meaning of words, translation, media of dissemination, perspectives that shape our understanding, language, expectations, context (everything is relative to the context!). We also discuss the challenges when a message requires action on the part of the listener: convenience or desire to act, fatigue and lack of tools or methods to act upon a message, lack of a singular clear authority, not knowing who to trust, vetting sources, knowing what knowledge is valid when faced with conflicting information or ideas, especially when they go against existing beliefs. We agreed that it is always a challenge (though absolutely necessary) to set our own perspective aside in order to develop sincere understanding. We also discuss when less is more to make a message clearer and less open to interpretation, but also in a very Orwellian way, how this can also go entirely wrong. What authorities supersede our own independent search for truth? From a Global Politics perspective, an important idea raised was that “just because the more powerful perspective dominates the landscape doesn't mean that the less powerful perspective is less meaningful.” From a Graphic design perspective, to communicate messages, raise awareness, what is the best way to communicate so that it is not misinterpreted? How can we avoid adding to misinformation? What are the basics of communication to begin with? This was a challenging question and (as many knowledge questions) we ended with even more questions than we started with! Thanks for listening, I hope you found it thought provoking. This episode features two segments that focus on reimagining our relationship to technology, and the ways in which it contributes to our reality. First up, we speak with JAZSALYN, an anti-disciplinary artist, curator and creative director and a graduate student in an MFA student in Parsons' Design + Technology program and one of the creators of black beyond , a platform making space for artists and activists to speculate alternate realities for Blackness. black beyond is hosting a virtual new media festival titled black beyond _origins, to reimagine Black Femme Futures, starting June 17th, 2021. I caught up with Jazsalyn about the festival, and about her vision for how a world that repositions and centers communities that are often left out of discussions on technology, or what is the future. Then, we look at another set of ideas for reimagining our relationship to technology and the world around us. Last month the Jacobs Urban Tech Hub at Cornell Tech released Rebooting NYC: An Urban Tech Agenda for the Next Administration, a set of strategic recommendations for how the next New York City government can leverage new technologies to improve the lives of all New Yorkers. I spoke to Rohit "Rit" Aggarwala, formerly an executive at Sidewalk Labs and now the Hub's Senior Urban Tech Fellow, and Matt Stempeck, who is currently at Cornell University as Technologist in Residence, about the report.

Zoom meetings. Slack channels. Online learning. Work is more digital than ever … for some people. While corporate employees have a rich technology ecosystem that keeps them up-to-speed, frontline workers struggle to find timely, consistent information. Tools designed for office-based and work-from-home employees just don't fit into the hectic frontline workday. Instead, these workers rely on analog methods, such as pre-shift-huddles and time clock postings. They struggle to keep up with the pace of workplace change. They get justifiably frustrated. Their performance declines. Your customer experience and business results suffer. Corporate and frontline teams do their jobs differently. They need right-fit digital solutions.JD sits down with Andrea Curry, Senior Vice-President of Product Management at Axonify, to find out what it takes to design technology solutions for the frontline. After building a career in management consulting and professional services, Andrea transitioned into research and product development. Today, she partners with Axonify's customer community to solve frontline training, communication and performance challenges in ways that also make sense to the market at large. Andrea shares her proven approach to solution design, including how to build user personas, align solutions with operational realities and build a business case for technology investment. Why Frontline Workers Must be Part of your Digital Transformation (Forbes)Is WhatsApp putting your retail operation at risk? Behind technologies that effectively solve real problems, there is a methodical design process. From identifying and defining a problem to creating a solution, the process is critical for good design. To discuss the process involved in developing effective technologies, I am joined by the founder of a successful medical technology start-up that is having significant impact on people with chronic respiratory conditions. Mikesh Udani is Co-founder and CEO of Albus Health, a medical technology spinout company from the University of Oxford that develops intelligent remote monitoring systems. Their first product is an award-winning device that remotely monitors respiratory symptoms without anyone having to do or wear anything.Within three years of starting, they have won several innovation awards, including the AI in Health and Care award by the UK government which was announced by the Secretary of the State for Health and Care. They also raised nearly £3 million in funding and commercialised their first product through a contract to supply one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies. Mikesh, who studied mathematics and computer science, started his career in finance at Deutsche Bank. Prior to starting Albus Health, he completed a masters of computer science degree at Oxford University and was an Oxford Biodesign Fellow. Derek and I go back to college freshman year when we both co-founded our collegiate chapter of Phi Chi Theta at Boston University. With a degree doing a triple major in business, computer science, and mathematics, he decided to pursue a career in UX and UI while pursuing his master's degree in human factors in information systems at Bentley University and starting a YouTube channel called The Handoff for tips, tricks, and resources for junior designers to land their first UI or UX design job. UX is something I've always been interested in myself because I love how it introduces the psychology and overall experience into the design, so I dive deep to really learn more about UX in this particular episode. If you are considering a career in UX/UI or you're just fascinated by how technology changes lives, this is the episode for you!
