A founder of the firm's Planning & Design department, Elisa has been instrumental in transforming the relationship between the design and the real estate industries, fusing architectural marketing with strong design principles throughout all phases of residential, hotel, and amenity space planning.  Elisa's portfolio boasts an impressive array of projects, ranging from master plans and hotel- branded developments to individual villas, with NYC highlights including 220 Central Park South, 56 Leonard, Hudson Yards, One High Line, and historic landmark conversions like The Greenwich Lane and The Apthorp. Through her work with Corcoran Sunshine, Corcoran New Development, and the brand's affiliate network, she has consulted with developers including Silverstein Properties, Related, Rudin Management, and Vornado Realty Trust, and has shaped the architectural landscape of New York City through collaborations with architects including Robert A. Matt Goodrich, principal of his New York-based design studio Goodrich, has cultivated an approach that is rooted in collaboration, curiosity, and pursuing the unexpected. With a career that spans more than two decades, including stints at Rockwell Group and AvroKO, Goodrich's perspective champions the art of storytelling.Since founding his eponymous firm in 2017, Goodrich, who was recently named Boutique Design's 2024 Designer of the Year, has leaned into projects that push boundaries, taking on challenges that stretch the team's capabilities, from Ci Siamo, his collaboration with restaurateur Danny Meyer to the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The latter, home to the New York Islanders hockey team, challenged the studio, which had little prior experience in either live entertainment or sports venues, to create a unique, hospitality-driven project. Keeping a sketchbook or digital tablet on you at all times allows you to put pen to paper whenever an idea pops into mind. The gourd project was born out of a need to replace single use plastic drinking cups in the hospitality industry. By growing a gourd in a cup shaped mold, you are left with a disposable option that biodegrades safely. Good design comes from the minds of many, rather than a solo visionary. Designers must create a strategy that directly connects with the brand's vision, ethos, and personality, before jumping into crafting a compelling narrative. This transformation emphasizes the need for designers to adapt, understand scale, and create spaces that resonate with our human experience. Hospitality focused design has an important role in the healthcare industry. Long before turning his attention to architecture, David Rockwell, FAIA, had a fascination with immersive environments. Growing up in the United States and Guadalajara, Mexico, David was a child of the theater, and was often cast in community repertory productions by his mother, a vaudeville dancer and choreographer. There, he experienced the power of collaboration in service of a shared artistic goal and witnessed the ways in which narrative and design created meaning and lasting memories. At the end of the day, hospitality helps to bring out the commonality and real life experiences that connect people. Hospitality is all about bringing people together. There is a lot going on in the world now and hospitality can help ease the stress and find the common bond between people. You need to consider the needs of your clients as every project and client is going to require a different approach. When creating a hospitality space, it needs to be unique and create a memorable experience for the guests so they want to come back. We all get caught up in our day to day lives but it's important to take time to show gratitude and appreciation. There is a larger sense of community now in the hospitality industry, and it's important to be engaged with the community you are in. Sara Duffy helms the interiors division of Stonehill Taylor and is one of the few women principals who leads a major hospitality design firm. Sara was a major force in the transformation of the TWA Hotel at JFK airport in 2019, and during the pandemic it was Sara's leadership that helped to keep her firm on course. The recent renovations of the Marriott Marquis and the Algonquin are a testament to her dogged determination and leadership skills even during the most difficult days of the last two years. Sara's background includes growing up in Manhattan, a degree in Art History, a stint at MTV, and several years as a designer at Rockwell Group. Her list of Stonehill Taylor projects include those in the Big Apple as well as hotels in Nashville and Las Vegas. Sara has been interviewed in Interior Design Magazine, Madame Architect, Design Milk, IFDM , and in ArchNative's Women Who Inspire series. She also shared some of her hospitality experiences with Dan Ryan on the podcast, Defining Hospitality and spoke about breathing new life into historic hotels with host David Kepron on the podcast NXTLVL experience design. In this episode, presented by Mannington Commercial, ThinkLab interviews two experts in the emerging field of neuroaesthetics: Susan Magsamen, the director of Johns Hopkins' International Arts + Mind Lab, and Suchi Reddy, architect and founder of Reddymade. They explain how neuroaesthetics can provide clues about how our bodies respond to design on a biological level. ThinkLab also speaks with David Rockwell, founder of Rockwell Group, who discusses his multidisciplinary approach to design, creating memorable experiences blending both theater and architecture. Guest of this appointment is Jay Valgora, founder and principal of the Manhattan-based STUDIO V Architecture. He is an architect passionately dedicated to preserve and revitalise the relevant narrative of an heritage at risk of disappearing with particular interest for former abandoned industrial districts. Received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University and a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard he was a founding member and Design Director of Rockwell Group and Design Principal at Walker Group, until he decided to start his own practice in 2006. The firm embraces multiple services from master plans, to commercial and residential. Their projects have received important recognitions, as AIA awards, International Design Award, Architizer A+ Awards, Architectural Record Award, being featured in prestigious publications including The New York Times, Architectural Record, Dwell, Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Crain's New York, and Architect's Newspaper.The conversation starts focusing on the circumstances that led a child, grown up in Buffalo, former industrial New York City's waterfront site, where the father was working in the steel mills, to the great fascination for a large collection of gigantic, iconic grain elevators until conceiving ‘Silo City', a vision and proposal of an impressive adaptive reuse intending to link the silos and re-connect a community, winner of Future Project of the Year 2021 at World Architecture Festival. Another project polarizes the discussion: the really beautiful and meaningful rehabilitation of seven adjoining red brick former coffee warehouses, the Empire Stores, left languishing for over half a century along the Brooklyn waterfront, transformed into a dynamic community hub, successfully combining old and new and strategically reconnecting community and waterfront. Several important considerations are exchanged about 10 abandoned oil tanks along the East River in Brooklyn, which have been subject of a contention lasting years between Studio V, supported by many other environmentalists, landscape architects, scientists, activists and artists, intending to keep and adapt the majestic, luring industrial structures into a public park and the divergent position of those who didn't want to maintain them. Digital design constitutes another aspect explored by the practice to reach experimental structural solutions, like the facade of a Casino, former historical Yonkers 'Hilltop Racetrack'. The conversation concludes with a truly important and captivating message Valgora divulges, talking about ‘Last Utopia', a book he will publish soon. He speaks of the necessity to find again optimism and the indispensable new role that architects are expected to play in a time of great anxiety and uncertainty.

He spent 5 years in the Marine Corp, as the Crew Chief of CH53E Super Stallion Helicopter. After his military service, Jonathan graduated with an architecture degree and began his career at Rockwell Group before eventually finding his way into the CGI world. Jonathan has worked with some of the biggest real estate developers and architecture firms in the world. His diverse visualization projects including 35 Hudson Yards, Manhattan West, Lantern House in NYC; the Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida; M3 condos at MCity in Mississauga, Ontario and Victoria Place in Honolulu, Hawaii. After several years of construction at the Tianjin Xingang shipyard in northern China, the final test, the official sea trial, has now been completed with good results. The shipyard will present the ship for delivery this summer and the vessel will then sail to Antwerp in Belgium on its maiden voyage, where some members of the crew will board and the medical equipment supplemented. This will be followed by a visit to Rotterdam, and after this the Global Mercy™ will be ready for its first important mission in West Africa.Stena RoRo is building the Global Mercy on behalf of the international charity organization Mercy Ships, which provides free life-changing healthcare to people in some of the world's poorest countries. The project began in 2013 and Stena RoRo is responsible for design, contracting and execution. The construction project is unique in its kind and places major and specific demands on both design and layout, dependent on the special needs that hospital operations entail. On board are operating theatres and hospital wards, and everything needed for both patients and those working on board, including schools and preschools for the children of the volunteers. Sea trialThe sea trial, which the Global Mercy has just completed, means that the ship's systems and functions – such as engine performance and fuel consumption, navigation and radio equipment, maneuverability and safety systems – are tested for several days at sea.The Global Mercy will have six operating theatres, 200 hospital beds, a laboratory, a patient clinic and an eye and dental clinic. In total, she will be able to accommodate 950 people, of which 641 are crew.This summer the Global Mercy will be delivered from the shipyard. The maiden voyage will be to Antwerp in Belgium where some members of the crew will board and the last medical equipment installed, which will take a few months. After that, there will be two weeks in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where festivities will be held in presenting the ship to sponsors, potential volunteers and other interested parties.Big difference for many peopleThe first mission will be during 2022, when the Global Mercy is expected to call at Dakar in Senegal. There will then be more than six hundred volunteers aboard from all over the world and from a variety of professional categories, who will make it all possible through their contributions of skills and time.More than 93 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to safe surgical care *. The already very fragile medical care systems are at risk of being further degraded by the corona pandemic, and the need for basic but vital care is greater than ever in many poor countries. The Global Mercy will make a big difference for many people in southern and western Africa.Mercy Ships: https://bit.ly/33JfiAmCarnival Cruise Line Provides Update on Possible Restart Plan from Select U.S. HomeportCarnival Cruise Line today notified its guests and travel advisor partners of cancellations for additional sailings as it works toward plans for a possible July restart in the U.S. on select ships.Carnival hopes to begin operating sailings on three ships from Florida and Texas, including Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze from Galveston, and Carnival Horizon from Miami.  Further, if Carnival can find a solution to allow cruise ships to visit Alaska, Carnival Miracle will assume some of Carnival Freedom's departures from Seattle. Given that there is still some uncertainty in our ability to operate these cruises, guests booked on those sailings who wish to make alternate summer vacation plans may cancel without penalty by May 31, 2021 and receive a full refund.The company is cancelling sailings on all other ships through July 30, 2021.  Guests whose cruises are cancelled are eligible for a future cruise credit (FCC) and onboard credit (OBC) or a full refund.Dream Cruises rolls out COVID vaccination for over 700 crew on Explorer Dream in Taiwan The first cruise ship to resume sailing in Asia in the post-pandemic era, Dream Cruises' Explorer Dream has been operating in Taiwan since July 2020, with over 80 successful voyages of “Discover Taiwan” and Island-Hopping cruises completed to date. With an output of up to 20 megavolt amperes (MVA), two cruise ships can be supplied with electricity at the same time in Warnemünde at berths P7 and P8. In regular passenger operation AIDAsol needs up to 4.5 megawatts per hour (MWh) of electricity.The use of shore power to supply ships with energy is a decisive step for AIDA Cruises to reduce local emissions to zero during berthing over time, as a cruise ship typically stays in port around 40% of its operating time.Holland America Line's New Rotterdam Successfully Sails Through Sea Trials in ItalyIt was smooth seas and fair winds for Holland America Line's newest ship, Rotterdam, which returned in the evening of May 6 to Fincantieri's Marghera (Venice) shipyard in Italy, after successfully completing two sets of sea trials off the country's Adriatic coast.Rotterdam left Marghera April 25 and performed the preliminary sea trials over two days before going into dry dock at Fincantieri's Trieste shipyard where standard pre-delivery hull maintenance and painting were performed. Sarah discusses how she developed an appreciation and love of the environment, her deep spirituality, questioning conventional wisdom, and rejecting parental pressures to conform. He's designed cookware and sunglasses for Corning, street furniture for the National Zoo, internet appliances for Google, a mobile kitchen/classroom for Jamie Oliver, and in the beginning, jewelry.Viemeister was the lab chief of the LAB at Rockwell Group. Before this, he was VP of creative at Studio Red who is know for their multidisciplinary work with big companies like Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Starwood. He also help create the new "Fourth and Towne" brand for Gap, and helped found a number of well-known design organizations like  frogdesign NY, Razorfish's physical design capability, Smart Design (where he helped design the widely-acclaimed Oxo "GoodGrips"), and Springtime USA who specialize in mobility, brand development and smart products for clients like Heineken, Nike, Toyota and Kate Spade.

Before founding GOODRICH, Matthew was Chief Creative Officer at AvroKO, an interdisciplinary design firm with offices in New York, San Francisco, Bangkok and London. He led the design process for hospitality and retail projects, and provided creative leadership for the internal branding agency Brand Bureau. He is recognized for his ability to understand the interactions between the user and the built environment, creating aesthetically and functionally successful restaurants and hotels that visually reflect a brand’s culture.Ryan Pendleton was born in Fullerton, CA and now resides in San Francisco, CA with his partner. He is trained in fine art photography, drawing and sculpture. The Bauhaus movements made by Kandinsky and Klee, and that of American Painter Jasper Johns inspire his philosophy as an artist. Ryan’s abstract works, much like Kandinsky and Klee, are focused on the point, the line, the plane, the solid. His influence from Johns is apparent in the dialogue between figuration and form. Taking each basic principle of design into consideration, Ryan seeks to achieve highly dynamic and visually pleasing images. Greatly inspired by nature, Ryan spends much of his time communicating with it and understands the psychological connection people have with the organic in order to maintain a peaceful mind and find their own artistry in shape, texture, form and mass.  Ryan has always been fascinated with his Scandinavian ancestry and finds inspiration in the boldness of pattern found in their folk art, pottery, and quilts. When Elizabeth Diller graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in architecture in 1979, she had no intention of necessarily becoming an architect. In fact, the Polish-born, New York–raised Diller chose architectural studies simply to explore her interests in art and physical space. Two years later, in 1981, she co-founded a forward-thinking practice with Ricardo Scofidio, who had been her professor and who she later married. At first, their budding firm fell into an avant-garde category that existed outside corporate or institutional confines of art and architecture—and indeed it often critiqued those worlds. Diller and Scofidio were primarily making edgy, visually impactful installations and theatrical projects, as well as conceiving what might even be called “paper architecture”—dream concepts seemingly unlikely to be realized. Over the past three decades, though, with the introduction of numerous technologies, the latter has become reality and, at the same time, the former has continued apace. The firm, now called Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R)—Charles Renfro became a partner in 2004, Benjamin Gilmartin in 2015—has gone on to become one of the most groundbreaking, ahead-of-the-curve practices in the field. DS+R’s many cultural and civic projects around the world include the elevated High Line park in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood; the Broad museum in L.A.; The Shed at Hudson Yards, in collaboration with Rockwell Group; an expansion of the Museum of Modern Art, opening this fall; and the Centre for Music, a permanent home to be built for the London Symphony Orchestra. Diller and her firm’s approach, which begins with questions, accounts for much of this success: “What if we made this building out of water?” “How can we create a conversation between digital media and reality?” The results are often radical. Just take the firm’s breakthrough project, the Blur Building, an “architecture of atmosphere” created for the Swiss Expo in 2002 in Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The project was a rebellious, almost anti-architecture statement: the structure disappears. At its heart, the Blur captured the idea of architecture as experience, which is really what the bulk of the firm’s work achieves. DS+R’s buildings typically slow you down; they make you feel something. Today, Diller is among the most revered architects in the world. She has twice been named to the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people, in 2009 and 2018, and she was the recipient of the first MacArthur Foundation fellowship in architecture in 1999. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Diller shares with Spencer Bailey her roundabout path to becoming an architect, the social and cultural impacts of the High Line and The Shed, and the emotional resonance of designing spaces in her home city.

Phyllis discusses the current need for designers to collaborate across different sectors and the positive benefits of attending as many trade shows as possible. Then stay tuned for Nick's interview with Bill Darcy, CEO of NKBA on what to expect at the KBIS trade show in January. Phyllis Harbinger at BDNY Collaborative Design Phyllis Harbinger is mostly a residential designer but looks to hospitality design for inspiration. The lines between residential and commercial design are blurring and now more than ever designers need to be aware of the current design trends. One of the ways this is evident is in mixed-use developments. Mixed-use developments combine retail, apartments, hotels, restaurants and possibly a school, movie theater or hospital with dwelling spaces to make a full-scale community within a bigger universe. Designers need to function more collaboratively to react to this shifting trend. Hudson Yards is the newest design community encompassing this change. Located across the street from BDNY, Hudson Yard includes parks, retail spaces, restaurants, and condos within the confines of one community. A project such as this would employ landscape architects designing the terrain, graphic designers producing signage graphics, artists/sculptors, and city planners to design the transportation hub. Larger design firms such as Gensler or The Rockwell Group would typically be hired to work on these project types as they employ a diverse group of architects and designers who work collaboratively. BDNY and Hospitality BDNY is a great place for inspiration, networking opportunities, and to meet new people. The vendors at BDNY are different than those normally found at High Point Market or Vegas Market. At BDNY vendors are primarily hospitality focused and typically work with larger minimal orders. Phyllis recommends all designers should attend BDNY even if they don't work in the hospitality market, as you never know when you might get a call to work on your first hospitality project. It's good to educate yourself on the nuances of different project types. Often times, companies want to hire an up and coming designer to provide their unique point of view to projects. Working on smaller boutique hotels is a great way to enter the hospitality sector as you have the opportunity to receive more design directive because of the smaller scale. If you are targeting this market it's a good idea to bring samples of your portfolio to provide to people you wish to connect with. Also, make a list of who you want to meet and think about who you know that knows these people. This is a great first step to achieving your end goal and grow your contact list. It is very helpful to partner with a fellow designer that may have more experience in areas other than your normal expertise. Phyllis partnered with another designer when working on the proposal for the Ritz Carlton Residences. Although she had a wealth of experience in residential she needed the additional professional knowledge from the hospitality sector. Not only did they both learn from each other, but the partnership helped mitigate liability forsomething you don't know much about. Don't think of a partnership as a loss of money but as exchanging money for experience. Once you have experience you can charge more on subsequent projects.
