Whether it's the MD of a successful engineering firm questioning the value of marketing or a frustrated business owner trying to manage multiple platforms, I'll offer a fresh perspective.I'll emphasise the importance of building and strengthening your brand to attract the right audience. I urge businesses to look beyond traditional marketing methods and consider a more holistic approach that focuses on long-term sustainability and engagement with various stakeholders.Key Takeaways:Broaden Your Perspective: Move away from traditional marketing concepts and think holistically about your brand and its values.Know Your Audience: Understand who you're trying to attract and why they should choose your business.Internal Marketing: Engage your team as brand ambassadors, starting from the inside out.Focus on Retention: Think of your business as a bucket; focus on retaining customers rather than constantly filling the funnel.Test, Track, Tweak: Implement the four T's in your marketing strategy - test, track, tweak, and try again.Word of Mouth Marketing: Embrace and encourage word of mouth as a powerful and sustainable marketing tool.To wrap up, I encourage businesses to align their marketing efforts with their business goals and to be open to testing and tweaking their strategies for better results. People have different expectations and are looking for purpose, substance, provenance, and positive realism. Demonstrate your competence and ability through storytelling. What makes you credible? Making key information available to your stakeholders about why you are the right person / team / brand for the job.People do business with people. Who is / are the faces behind the brand? Share more of you, your story, the people working in your team and your customers. Be a force for good. Why not “Go the extra mile” - become that Great Place to Work - or the best apprenticeship provider or award winning brand. Review results and demonstrate and communicate the IMPACT you make. Lean manufacturing - Never sit still, always look to see how you can do things better.Social proof.  According to Robert Cialdini, who studied the principle of social proof in-depth in his book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, “we view a behavior as more correct in a given situation to the degree that we see others performing it”. Share your key milestones and statistics.Show you care - take time to engage with your teams, your customers, your partners or other key stakeholders.Silence is never golden. This means sharing the good and the bad.Keep your promises - do what you say you'll do. Embrace being perfectly imperfect. It's how you deal with it and fix things that make the differenceJOY - love what you do - be yourself, share your passion and create a shitload of tummy flips.  Resources Future-Proof your Business Webinar 18th April - sign up for my free interactive workshop https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and more information about how to work with Lucy. Only you can decide if you're going to keep going or give up and this can make the difference between success and failure.3) Doing your own thing. Why it's important to own your voice and space and do things on your terms and in your own way.4) Be scared and do it anyway. Facing your fear and doing the thing is the only way you're going to move forward and grow.and5) Be the best cheerleader for others. 045 Podcasting Reflections: A Year of Growth, Giggles and Owning my Own Voice

Welcome to this special anniversary episode of the Future-Proof Your Business podcast, as I celebrate its first year and reflect on my podcasting journey over the past 12 months. Join me as I share insights from behind the scenes of the 44 episodes and the 7 key learnings that I'm taking with me into the next year:1) Get really clear on why.It really does make a difference when you know why you're doing it. It has made things so much easier and really helped in those sticky moments when I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry!Energy and resources.2) Work out what you think you need and then multiply it by at least 50%. I thought I knew what it was going to take and as you know I'm not afraid of putting the work in, but I completely underestimated the energy, time and resources needed to really get the most out of the podcast, to create quality content and share it in the right way. 3) Recognising My Strengths and My RamblingsI've always known I could talk, (and yep I know I can ramble), but what I didn't anticipate was the debilitating fear that took over me when I found myself facing the Riverside studio screen all by myself.4) Connecting with My AudienceChecking in with myself and keeping in mind who the podcast is for and who I want to reach has been key, and finding ways to get feedback and what you want or need, and how I can add value is something I need to keep working on.5) Don't be afraid to try new thingsI've learned to be ok with tweaking things, trying new ways of doing things or even changing my mind, again! It really is OK to say you're not sure or not happy with something and keep trying until it feels right. I'm still working on my intro and episode style and I know the whole podcast will keep on moving forward with me as I grow and my business evolves.6) Embracing My Own VoiceTaking a leaf out of Dolly Parton's book, I'm learning to be unapologetically myself. Owning my unique style, including the choice of music, has been liberating and has made such a difference to my podcast, to my business and to me.7) Enjoying the Journey and Embracing ImperfectionsNot taking things too seriously and having a giggle! Finding joy in the process, and being OK with things not being perfect has been a game-changer for me and my clients. I've loved every moment of this journey, even when my chocolate Labrador, Kylo, decides to join in!Finally, the positives that have come from this adventure have been incredible. 044 Joining the Dots: Bridging the Gap between the world of business and young people

This episode is a bit different, I'm excited to share with you more about my new “Joining the Dots” project that is launching this September in collaboration with the brilliant Take Part. With more than 25 years working with small, medium and large organisations all around the world, and eight years as the founder and Managing Director of LR Comms, a strategic communications consultancy, I know how vital finding the right people and communicating effectively can be to the success of your business.I'm also increasingly aware of the constant challenges that my clients and other businesses face in attracting and retaining the right people, especially in today's post-covid world where our traditional ways of doing things have been thrown out of the window. At the same time, our young people are struggling to get inspired. They are expected, at thirteen and fourteen years of age, to start to make choices about their own futures, yet they have very few, if any opportunities to explore the world of work, and to find out more about how it all works. How can they know what they want to do, where their strengths lie and what they enjoy doing if they aren't given the chance to discover more, to hear from real people in real jobs, to get experience in different industries and types of roles and to ask questions? I want to bridge the gap between the world of business and young people, and encourage our future generations to get curious, explore opportunities and make the choice to create a life doing what they love.My new Joining the Dots programme aims to bridge the gap between these two worlds, providing our young people with the insights, opportunities and inspiration they need to be able to make the right choices and create a life they want and enable businesses to connect with future employees, build awareness for what they do and encourage more people to want to join them.I'd love to know what you think and if you'd like to get involved. Laura and Pete share some great tools and tips to help you get started including three core questions to consider before writing your non-fiction book: How are you actually going to help people with the knowledge that you have to share? Instead of focusing on yourself, think about what it is that your customer wants? What do they need? What is the thing that's going to help them and get them started? Why are you the best person to write this book? As business owners and managers, we often know more than we think we do and so we need to unpick our expertise and figure out how we can teach it to someone else. And why is now the best time to write this book? And finally, Laura challenges you to write a list of 10 things that you are good at, it has to be 10. Be really specific in relation to your business and this will help you get to the heart of why you are the expert, how you can help other people with your incredible knowledge and why you need to just get started in writing your book.Resource Links:https://www.derbyshirewritingschool.com/ -https://www.derbyshirewritingschool.com/podcast - BEGIN the podcast.Email info@derbyshirewritingschool.com to reach out to Laura and Pete.Listen to my interview on the BEGIN podcasthttps://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and more information about how to work with Lucy.Listen to more episodes of The Future-Proof your Business podcast - https://www.iamlucyrennie.com/podcastResources Future-Proof your Business Webinar 18th April - sign up for my free interactive workshop https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and more information about how to work with Lucy. 033 5 Reasons Why you Should Invest in Yourself to Grow your Business

In this week's podcast, I'm sharing with you the 5 reasons why I believe it's imperative to invest in yourself and in your own personal development in order to grow and future-proof your business.I'm a massive believer in the fact that as business owners you should never stop learning, gaining new skills and finding new ways to do things, to think differently, to continuously be looking to improve what you're doing and to add more value.I talk about: The need to keep up-to-date with your skills and your knowledge, to make sure that you're staying relevant as a business.Making sure you are adding value to your clients, that you're doing a good job and doing what you say you're going to do. Your Reputation. Your credibility as a business and being that business owner that is always looking to improve and provide the best service. How important it is to widen your skill set to extend your products or services and offer further value to your clients. The JOY factor. There's something special about learning new skills or gaining insights, and understanding how things work. Striving to be the best at something or challenging yourself to question how you do things? Is there a better way or could you add more value? For me, investing in your own personal development allows you to stay interested and keep that spark alive. It's a great way to fuel your passion for your business and a fabulous way to get out and meet new people, meet up with your connections, your network, your friends or clients and strengthen those relationships. There's just so much that can come out of this. In this week's episode I'm asking the question: How easy is it for people to buy from you? If you know that you're doing a good job, if you really care about what you're doing, then there's no reason why people shouldn't want to come and buy from you, unless you are putting obstacles in the way?I share nine ways to make sure that the right people find you and buy from you as easily and smoothly as possible: Do you assume that people know what you do, and what products and services you sell? Are you communicating in the right way with your customers? Do your people feel like you're in their head and talking directly to them? Are you providing all the relevant information that someone needs in order to buy from you? Are you clear on your pricing? Be that person that puts their prices out there, be transparent and confident about it.What about your buying process? How easy and simple is it to make a purchase? Are you actually sharing your products and services with people? Or are you the world's best kept secret? So you sense-check what you do? It's simple, be ethical in everything you do.And finally I'm challenging you to ask your clients and audience for feedback. Be brave, get fresh eyes on your website and offers and ask people ‘How easy is it to buy from you?'Lucy Rennie Resources:https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and free downloadable resourcesJoin my mailing list - https://www.iamlucyrennie.com/podcastBuy my book here - https://go.lrcomms.co.uk/bookI would love to invite you to come and join me and lots of other small business owners like you in my FREE Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CommunicatewithPurposeResources Future-Proof your Business Webinar 18th April - sign up for my free interactive workshop https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and more information about how to work with Lucy. In today's episode, I'm talking about a subject that comes up all the time, and that's 'Perfectionism'.I want to share with you some insights into me and my world, and how I manage being a perfectionist as a small business owner.I look at:- how we can embrace different ways of thinking to really help us to be brave, to do the scary things.- how it's okay to be rubbish at something because it means that we're just getting started, and we're going to improve.- who decides what perfect is? Who decides what the standard is? Or what's good enough? - how I think it all comes down to perspective because we all see things differently.- how imperfection makes us a lot more relatable. It allows us to resonate and allows people to connect with us when we can show that we're not so shiny and perfect.- how embracing being imperfect allows us to create that room for growthand I share more about the Japanese phrase Wabi Sabi' meaning “to celebrate imperfection”. My introduction to this episode. 0:00I'm the world's biggest perfectionist. 1:54The fear of not meeting other people's expectations. 3:49The hardest part of writing a book was putting it out there for sale. 8:46It's ok to be rubbish at something. 11:26How do you know when you've done enough? Is that good enough? 15:23If we want to attract and work with our kind of people, then if we're making everything look really shiny and rosy. 17:51Embracing imperfection allows us to grow. 20:01Being the real you is the key. 25:56When you have done the thing, you get the reward. 28.17Show Resources:https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and free downloadable resourcesJoin my mailing list - https://www.iamlucyrennie.com/podcast Buy my book here - https://go.lrcomms.co.uk/book I would love to invite you to come and join me and lots of other small business owners like you in my FREE Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CommunicatewithPurposeResources Future-Proof your Business Webinar 18th April - sign up for my free interactive workshop https://www.iamlucyrennie.com - free downloadable resources, other episodes and more information about how to work with Lucy.
