Today on the podcast I'm excited to have an interview with illustrator and author of Why We Cook, Lindsay Gardner. Lindsay is a mother of two daughters (her favorite sous chefs) and her watercolor and gouache illustrations have appeared not only in cookbooks and other editorial projects, but advertising campaigns, and stationery and interior design collaborations as well. Lindsay's wide-ranging artistic sensibility makes her a gentle interrogator of the world around her. Her food art has appeared in the Cookie Advent Cookbook, Pies, Fries & Ice Cream, and The Rituals, as well as Uppercase Magazine, Architectural Digest, StyleCarrot, Decorist, Vogue, among others. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, she's been fortunate to live in the beautiful and vibrant locales of Oakland and San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, New York, NY and Middlebury, VT, and recently moved to northern Michigan. Why We Cook is her first book. Today on the podcast we talk about the nitty gritty process of making the book, Lindsay's making the art for the book from managing ideation, sketching, layout and final paintings, as well as the timing of the book's release given the pandemic and everything else that was happening in the world at the time. This week, we're excited to welcome Lindsay Gardner and Katianna Hong to Salt + Spine, the podcast on stories behind cookbooks.Lindsay's debut book, Why We Cook: Women on Food, Identity, and Connection, features interviews, recipes, and essays from more than 100 women in food.PURCHASE THE COOKBOOK: Omnivore Books | Bookshop | IndieBound | AmazonAn artist whose illustrations and watercolor works have appeared in numerous media, Lindsay is an avid home cook herself and began to take a greater interest in cooking after having kids—a milestone that shaped how she began to think about the connections between food and her identity as a woman. Those connections often came back to this question: “We do we cook?” As Lindsay talked with more and more women in food media, restaurants, and the broader industry, she found both similar and totally unique responses to that question.Which led to the concept for her first book. The volume is beautifully illustrated throughout with Lindsay’s work—watercolors of the interviewees and contributors, paintings of memorable meals or stories brought to life. It’s a diverse volume both in format and in contributors, ranging from cookbook authors to professional chefs to fellow home cooks. It’s both a who’s who of women in food—and shines a light on new voices. We’re joined in this episode by Lindsay and one of the book’s contributors, Katianna Hong. Katianna graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and quickly rose in the ranks at Michelin-starred spots like The Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley, where she became the first female chef de cuisine at a three-star Michelin restaurant in the U.S. She then led the kitchen at Charter Oak, where she earned numerous accolades. But she stepped away in 2019, for both maternity leave and to reset and come back to the industry in a new way. This year, she’s slated to open Yangban Society—a Korean American-owned deli and market—with her husband John in Los Angeles’s Arts District.Lindsay and Kat joined us remotely to talk about the Why We Cook book, about gender equity in the food industry, and their relationship to cooking. In this episode Abigail speaks with Lindsay Gardner about her new book Why We Cook: Women on Food, Identity and Connection. The women in its pages remind us that it’s in the kitchen, in the field, and around the table that many women around the world do their most vital work as human beings. The result is an inspiring, empowering, and moving celebration of the place where food meets feminism.
Within the pages of this beautiful book, author and illustrator Lindsay Gardner shines a spotlight on the inspiring achievements of women in food today. From Food52 cofounders Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs to The Chew host Carla Hall to slow food activist and chef Deborah Madison, soba maker and sake sommelier Mutsuko Soma, food journalist Ruth Reichl, community organizer Shakirah Simley, and more, Why We Cook celebrates those who are dedicated not only to their craft, but to supporting other women within the industry. Alongside the text are Gardner’s vibrant and gorgeous watercolor illustrations that bring these women to life. Meet changemakers, like Cristina Martinez, a chef who emigrated from Mexico and who brings her Philadelphia community together through food while using her platform to champion immigrants’ rights; and Leah Penniman, who describes a day in her life on Soul Fire Farm, which she co-founded to combat racism in the food system. Evocative reflections on food and memory, like Rachel Khong's ode to her mother's love of fruit. And narrative recipes, like restaurateur Nicole Ponseca's Bibingka. The result is an inspiring, empowering, and moving celebration of the place where food meets feminism. Lindsay Gardner is an illustrator and artist who lives in Oakland, California, with her husband and two daughters (her two favorite sous chefs). Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, her penchant for stories and art led her to study American literature and art at Middlebury College and to earn her MFA in painting from San Francisco Art Institute. Her illustrations have appeared in cookbook and editorial projects, advertising campaigns, and stationery and interior design collaborations, and have been featured on Eatingwell.com and in Flow and Uppercase magazines, among others.

THE OCD 74:Music From The OC: Mix 3Mike and Ryan tackle The OC: Mix 3! Halloween has come and gone, and now it's time to listen to Christmas music. Luckily, Josh Schwarz and The OC crew hooked us up. That's right, eight (8!) songs for all of those moments where you are stringing popcorn for Christmas tree decorations because obviously you're poor and also don't have to worry about Cornin' Rats, the rats that only eat popcorn. They're scary, but far less scary than Rattin' Corn, the popcorn that only eats rats. Anyway...no Rooney on this one. Sorry. Cassie is the DM for the journey, and Ryan and Katelynn have to talk-fight it out to see who will get the most points. Hint: Ryan wins, because he annoys Cassie less. THE OCD 60:Our Orange County Experience Cassie, Katelynn, and Ryan discuss growing up in the OC! With Mike still MIA, Cassie takes over The OCD podcast to discuss growing up in Orange County. Cassie somehow...didn't grow up there, so she invites her Unnatural 20's podcast co-host Katelynn (and former OCD panelist Ryan) to explain it to her, and how it compares to the seminal hit TV show The OC. After Cassie (who is from something called the Inland Empire) grills Ryan and Katelynn about their past, she runs them through a quiz to see which OC character they each are! Mike and Ryan take a break from reviewing episodes to do a very special "Where Are They Now?" Over the course of the first fifty episodes of The OCD, Mike and Ryan have had to say goodbye to so many different characters. Tonight, they'll pause their journey of watching every single episode of The OC, and try to figure out where all of those people are right now. What happened to Luke? Where is Anna From Pittsburgh in 2019? Somehow, Mike and Ryan know all of the answers to all of those questions! Also don't forget toVisit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Join our Patreon team!Like us!Follow us!Write to Us! - contact@yourpopfilter.comCall Us! - 1.562.DrDJPopSupport the show
It is my opinion that parents need to be more involved in their player's training at home. Whether it's teaching them to ride a bike, complete their math homework, of practice their swing, a parent is the first coach a player will have. The parent is also the coach that will be around them the most. As a former USA Team Player, National Pro Fastpitch All-Star, Big 12 All-American & Big 12 Freshman of the year, and ASA 18U Gold National Champion, I am here to share with you the secret to teaching your players how to compete when they step up to the plate. I am here to share with you the drills that will help your players understand the object of the game and will help them with timing and hitting the ball to the open gaps.
