“I think the biggest takeaway for me has to be about the storytelling bit of it and how important it is to tell a story. And I think I will not even take the credit for it. I will give most of the credit to Sajith because of driving the whole process, right? If you look at him, he has done it three times. So the driving of the story, how do you tell a story? What is the story? What are you trying to answer? All of those things are something that I learned along the way.”  - Anurag P, Blume VenturesIn this episode, we speak with Anurag Pagaria and Nachammai Savithri (or NS), co-authors of the Indus Valley Annual Report 2024.The Indus Valley Annual Report (now in its 3rd year of publication) by VC firm Blume Ventures offers the most definitive story of the vibrant Indian startup ecosystem. Several decades later when historians study the origin of this phenomenon during this crucial period in India's economic history, I have no doubt that the Indus Valley reports would be among their go-to sourcesWhile the report's authorship is led by the inimitable Sajith Pai, I thought it would be useful to speak to the folks who would have done the bulk of the research and creation work for the deck. (Incidentally I have already interviewed Sajith on this podcast earlier – a must listen episode). So in this conversation, Anurag and NS get into the weeds of how they picked key themes for covering in the report, how they went across the research process, how the draft storylines were crafted, the review and refinement process for the narrative and finally the visual element in creating the deck.Several fascinating takeaways for students of data-storytelling emerge from the episode:- Simple tools work for research and retrieval: The three of them just used basic G-Suite tools for the project- Leading with the story: Once a reasonable amount of data for a theme/sector was collected, the first step was to create a skeleton storyline and refine it before making the slides- Connecting the dots: The team would not look at sectors in silos. Instead connections were made between similar patterns across sectors and geographies- Following Data Storytelling basics: Clear messages on top of slides, connecting messages across slides, using transition slides between sections-  Simple visuals: No fancy graphics and charts – just simple column, bar and line charts to explain the message in the easiest way possible- Using engagement elements: Evocative images, tweets and quotes from credible people to make the content engaging for the general readerI am sure you will derive a lot of value from this in-depth conversation.Let's dive in.Show Notes:- My post analysing the storytelling techniques used in the report - Steve Jobs Interview – on the importance of story at Pixar: - Sajith Pai on Story Rules Podcast- Anurag on Twitter and LinkedIn- Nachammai Savithri on LinkedIn- Blume website, Twitter and YouTube

In our quest to capture the pure sound of trees in true spatial quiet, we have without realising it, been following a long and winding path that has ultimately led us here. The Kielder Forest. It's a remote place for England. A place where the sound of trees can properly be felt and heard. A place where millions upon millions of trees grow together, across an area of 250 square miles (400 square kilometres).  Planning this recording trip involved OS Explorer map OL42. We also checked flight paths and road maps to try to guess what extent human made noise might filter into the forest. From the sparse few roads and giant area of uninhabited nothingness, the location looked on-paper like a very quiet place indeed. Ideal we hoped for capturing the real sound of trees, in high definition audio. When we say the 'real sound of trees', we mean the spatial sound of trees in an ever undulating wind. Wind that shifts in strength between soft to medium. Ideally with most variations around the 10 to 20 knot range and that peaks every now and then with slowly rising and slowly falling currents in the 25 to 30 knot range. For the spatial aspect, the trees need to be over a very wide area, and very tall. To be spruce and fir, because these make the sound-feel that we are most interested in. Evocative deep brown hushing.   Somewhat optimistic for these very particular conditions, we travelled up country and ventured deep into the forest. We found a location near the dam of Kielder Water, and in driving rain left the Lento box tied to a tree. Then returned to the village some way outside the forest to stay the night. It always feels strange to leave the box behind, alone in such a vast place. Now we are home and listening back, what it captured is magical to us. Here is the period of time from 3am to just before 4am when the majority of spring birds begin to sing in first light. The wind strengths aren't strong, but there is an undulating wind that can be clearly heard in the tall spruce and fir trees as the banks of wind move across this region of the forest. Echoes of owls can be heard too, distant geese and a strange barking which we can't quite identify. Delicate layers of bird song gradually begin to build as the time approaches 4am.  * As always with Lento listen with headphones or Airpods to properly hear the full range of aural qualities we strive to capture and share.

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. DAVE PORTER Dave Porter is a Los Angeles based composer for film and television. He began his classical musical training at the piano at age five, but it was his interest in electronic music as a teen that led him to start composing his own music. He studied both classical and electronic music composition at Sarah Lawrence College under John Yannelli and started his professional career as an assistant in Philip Glass' recording studio in New York City. Dave is perhaps best known for his enduring creative relationship with one of Hollywood's most respected figures – Vince Gilligan. Since the remarkable pilot episode of Breaking Bad in 2007, Dave has written the original music for all of Gilligan's projects. He scored all 62 episodes of that groundbreaking series and created its iconic opening theme. Actor/Producer Bryan Cranston stated: “With his music, Dave Porter has created another character for Breaking Bad. Evocative and meaningful, Dave's work is an essential part of the storytelling.” Since then, Dave has also been behind all of the original music for Breaking Bad's equally acclaimed spin-off, Better Call Saul, and helped bring the Breaking Bad universe to the big screen with his original score to Gilligan's feature film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. 2024 will kick off a new chapter In Dave's career — his first collaboration with Marvel Studios, Echo, will release on January 10th. The first project to be released under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, it will also be the first Marvel series with a TV-MA rating. “The Marvel team made me feel at home right away and have created a television series full of all of the hallmarks that inspire me — real stakes, emotions, consequences, and a world in which all of the characters are always learning and evolving,” said Porter on his collaboration with Marvel. Dave has twice been awarded ASCAP's Composer's Choice Award for Best Television Composer — at the inaugural event for the award in 2013, and once again in 2017. He was also bestowed the 2019 Citation Award by his alma mater Sarah Lawrence College for his creative achievements. DAVID FLEMING David Fleming is an American composer who has written music for film and television. His signature sound is rooted in a synth-heavy design that subverts traditional scores and creates unique soundscapes for each project, including HBO's The Last of Us, the Top 5 debut Amazon series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring Donald Glover, and the upcoming Netflix epic fantasy feature Damsel, starring Millie Bobby Brown. Blue Planet II marked the start of a collaborative relationship with David and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, encompassing music for films such as Dune and Top Gun: Maverick. David has also collaborated with popular recording artists such as Lady Gaga, Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Camilla Cabello and Beyoncé, with whom he worked on the Grammy-nominated song Spirit, for The Lion King soundtrack. He is currently composing the score for Barry Levinson's Alto Knights, starring Robert De Niro as well as the documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man, directed by Ron Howard. Hi, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and on the Binge Reading show this week, Amanda talks about her latest book, The Moon Gate, telling a story that reaches from wartime Britain to Tasmania and back to Ireland.  And she shares the timeline story that first captivated, her imagination, and inspired her to swap jobs. from being a geologist in the world's far off corners, to a fictional author who's immediately attracted positive reviews. Hello there, Amanda, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Amanda Geard: Hi, Jenny. Thanks so much for having me. Jenny Wheeler: Amanda, The Moon Gate, which is your second historical timeline mystery refers to a particularly striking architectural feature in an old house in Ireland. It has both symbolic and real significance to the story. Tell us about The Moon Gate. Amanda Geard: Thanks, Jenny. Yes. Gosh, I love moon gates. They're these wonderful follies that are often found in Chinese gardens. But the idea was of course pinched and went around the world with the British Empire, and so you see them in a lot of old British gardens. And they're a circular structure, mostly often made of stone or brick, but timber as well, or willow wicks, but the idea is that they separate one part of the garden from another, but they rise up out of the earth. And, the mentality is that to walk through one is to be reborn. I really wanted to put one of these in what became called The Moon Gate because one of my protagonists, Grace, who's a young woman who leaves Grosvenor Square in London just before the outbreak of World War Two. She travels to Tasmania, where I'm from originally, and she sheds her skin there. And actually the Moon Gate is in the house there at, at the back of the house there in Tasmania, between the small garden around the house and this wild rainforest. She captures her own wilderness, I think. It was just this lovely lovely symbol I wanted to weave in. Organising a Moon Gate Tour? There's a thought! Jenny Wheeler: And are there any actual moon gates in Tasmania? Amanda Geard: Oh, I think there are some in some private gardens. And then here in Ireland, I really want to do a moon gate tour. And I've been collecting a very short list of moon gates, but some people in the UK who've read the book have sent me pictures of moon gates in their nearby big houses, or a lot of people have them in their gardens now as well. They've built them from all kinds of things. I love the ones where people have taken rounds of logs and built them up into an archway that's round and then grown ivy up it.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: QAPR 5: grokking is maybe not that big a deal?, published by Quintin Pope on July 23, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. [Thanks to support from Cavendish Labs and a Lightspeed grant, .I've been able to restart the Quintin's Alignment Papers Roundup sequence.] Introduction Grokking refers to an observation by Power et al. (below) that models trained on simple modular arithmetic tasks would first overfit to their training data and achieve nearly perfect training loss, but that training well past the point of overfitting would eventually cause the models to generalize to unseen test data. The rest of this post discusses a number of recent papers on grokking. Grokking: Generalization Beyond Overfitting on Small Algorithmic Datasets In this paper we propose to study generalization of neural networks on small algorithmically generated datasets. In this setting, questions about data efficiency, memorization, generalization, and speed of learning can be studied in great detail. In some situations we show that neural networks learn through a process of "grokking" a pattern in the data, improving generalization performance from random chance level to perfect generalization, and that this improvement in generalization can happen well past the point of overfitting. We also study generalization as a function of dataset size and find that smaller datasets require increasing amounts of optimization for generalization. We argue that these datasets provide a fertile ground for studying a poorly understood aspect of deep learning: generalization of overparametrized neural networks beyond memorization of the finite training dataset. My opinion: When I first read this paper, I was very excited. It seemed like a pared-down / "minimal" example that could let us study the underlying mechanism behind neural network generalization. You can read more of my initial opinion on grokking in the post Hypothesis: gradient descent prefers general circuits. I now think I was way too excited about this paper, that grokking is probably a not-particularly-important optimization artifact, and that grokking is no more connected to the "core" of deep learning generalization than, say, the fact that it's possible for deep learning to generalize from an MNIST training set to the testing set. I also think that using the word "grokking" was anthropomorphizing and potentially misleading (like calling the adaptive information routing component of a transformer model its "attention"). Evocative names risk letting the connotations of the name filter into the analysis of the object being named. E.g., "Grokking" brings connotations of sudden realization, despite the fact that the grokking phase in the above plot starts within the first ~5% - 20% of the training process, though it appears much more abrupt due to the use of a base 10 logarithmic scale on the x-axis. "Grokking" also brings connotations of insight, realization or improvement relative to some previously confused baseline. This leads to the impression that things which grok are better than things which don't. Humans often use the word "grokking" to mean deeply understanding complex domains that actually matter in the real world. Using the same word in an ML context suggests that ML grokking is relevant to whatever mechanisms might let an ML system deeply understand complex domains that actually matter in the real world. I've heard several people say things like: Studying grokking could significantly advance ML capabilities, if doing so were to lead to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying generalization in ML. Training long enough could eventually result in grokking occurring in ML domains of actual relevance, such as language, and thereby lead to sudden capabilities gains or break alignment properties. Grokking is an example of how thinking l...

In the midst of sensory overload, there is a symphony of chaos that drowns out all else. It is as if every sound in the universe is colliding together in a cosmic battle for dominance. The listener becomes lost in the layers of noise, unable to distinguish one sound from another, until they are enveloped in a drone that reverberates through every fiber of their being. This sonic exploration is an experiment in sound design, a meditation on the power of noise to overwhelm the senses. It is a long-form journey through evolving textures and hypnotic rhythms that draw the listener deeper and deeper into the soundscape. Each element of the piece is carefully crafted, from the minimalistic patterns that create a sense of structure amidst the chaos, to the binaural recordings that create a sense of spatialization and immersion. As the listener surrenders to the hypnotic waves of sound, they enter a state of deep listening, where each individual element of the piece becomes more distinct and vibrant. The sounds are evocative of a cosmic journey, where the listener is transported to the edges of the universe, where the laws of physics and logic break down and anything is possible. In this state of sensory overload, the mind becomes overwhelmed, unable to distinguish between reality and imagination. It is a theory of mind that challenges the listener to explore the boundaries of perception and understanding, to question what is real and what is imagined. And as the journey comes to a close, the listener emerges from the sonic exploration, changed and transformed by the experience. The symphony of chaos has left an indelible mark on their soul, a reminder of the power of sound to transport us to otherworldly realms and challenge our perceptions of reality. ~ chatGPT TITLE: Cosmic Overload: Noise from the Abyss DESCR: A sonic exploration of cognitive overload, like when you get too much bad news at once and everything drowns in noise. Fresh Memories: The Look is a 360-video about the war in Ukraine that takes the deceptively simple idea of having Ukrainian citizens gaze into a 360-degree camera within the context of a bombed out home, workplace, or school that's juxtaposed against an audio design of that space when it would be at it's most flourishing moment. The experience of straightforward concept is extremely powerful, emotional, and evocative idea. Got a hankerin' for god meat? Well, pull out your giant lightsaber knife and feast on a new Four-Color Flashback! For the first FCF of 2023, Paul and Arlo set out at warp speed to seek enlightenment with Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo's We Only Find Them When They're Dead. The BOOM! Studios series, whose 15-issue run wrapped in December, is set hundreds of years from now, when the primary industry is extracting proteins, enzymes, and minerals from the corpses of massive deities. Evocative title and crazy premise aside, the book is chock full of theosophical enigmas that our boys try to solve. Beyond the elusive quest for concrete answers, though, this comic certainly makes them feel a whole lot. Dig in. Plus, some bellyaching about the new slate of DC movies.   NEXT: a discussion of S.S. Rajamouli's action epic RRR, which presumably concerns reading, writing, and arithmetic.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:30  -  Intro / Banter 00:21:25  -  We Only Find Them When They're Dead 01:58:36  -  Outro / Next     MUSIC “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica, Ride the Lightning (1984) “Mystery Jack” by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Float Along - Fill Your Lungs (2013)     GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Abortion Funds in Every State: https://bit.ly/AbortionFundsTwitter Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ The Trevor Project provides information and support to LGBTQ youth: thetrevorproject.org Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/  US (877) 565-8860 Canada (877) 330-6366 National Center for Transgender Equality: transequality.org Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

Be transported to the wild cliffs of Handa, off the coast of Sutherland, and the swirling whirling city of seabirds. It's the beginning of the breeding season and guillemots, razorbills and fulmars jostle for the best spots to nest while puffins makes themselves at home in borrows at the top of the sea stacks. The noise is constant as birds constantly commute between cliffs and the wider ocean to feed.Recorded by Fergus Collins, introduced by Hannah Tribe. Image from Getty. "Evocative, and inspiring ... So much more than a true crime." - Steve Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of NO STONE UNTURNED After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust – in ghettos, on death marches, and in concentration camps – a young couple seeks refuge in Canada. They settle into a new life, certain that the terrors of their past are behind them. They build themselves a cozy little cottage on a lake in Muskoka, a cottage that becomes emblematic of their victory over the Nazis. The charming retreat is a safe haven, a refuge from haunted memories. That is, until a single act of unspeakable violence defiles their sanctuary. Poking around the dark crawl space beneath their cottage, they discover a wooden crate, nailed tightly shut and almost hidden from view. Nothing could have prepared them for the horror of the crate's contents – or how the peace and tranquility of their lives would be shattered. Now, their daughter, Deborah Vadas Levison, an award-winning journalist, tells the extraordinary account of her parents' ordeals, both in one of the darkest times in world history and their present-day lives. Written in searing, lyrical prose, THE CRATE: A Story Of War, A Murder, And Justice examines man's seemingly limitless capacity for evil... but also, his capacity for good.
