Christmas Day is also the 1st night of Chanukah. It's Chrismukkah! We celebrate the Chanukah story, that victory over tyranny, and bring you some Chanukah gifts & music with Rande Friedman, former host of the Sunday Simcha.
As 2024 draws to a close, Jason and Alex celebrate Chrismukkah (when Christmas and Hanukkah fall on the same date, which is actually a rarer occurrence than you might imagine). They feature some cantorial Hebrew music in the intro and some choral Christmas jingles in the outro. They share their families' Christmas traditions, exploring the differences between American and British celebrations. They also explore the make believe of the contrasting Christmas celebrations of their alter egos, Xela Llah Llah and Nosaj Kcap. Plus: Alex's recent trip to Georgia, highlighting the protests against the Georgian Dream government's cancellation of EU membership, and how the West should respond. Also: the plight of the Kurds in Northeastern Syria, the need for a jamboree international conference of aid and capacity building support for Syria, the importance of proactive Western leadership on issues like Georgia and Syria and the potential profound consequences of inaction. And as they Order the Disorder, they express hope for positive change amidst global disorder. For Xmas Jason wishes for ‘Two NATOs on climate change, one NATO on tax havens, and a partridge in a pear tree,' while Alex wishes for ‘the EU to come up with a way to bypass Hungary and Slovakia and put sanctions on Georgia before the end of the year.' The phrase “Christmas Creep,” is defined as the tendency for Christmas products, decorations, and advertising to be displayed earlier each year. We see this more and more every year as soon as summer is over. With tongue-in-cheek, Sue Duffield starts off this episode with a little "merger musing", with the fictional possibilities of combining Christmas and Hanukkah into a new holiday called, "Chrismukkah!" Sue's broadcasting career in reporting news, community events and cultural happenings, goes way back to her early days in radio in the 90s. She continues to find an insatiable desire to report the "facts" with humor, making light of subjects that aren't so funny. There's no question that there's a definitive persuasion in consumerism. And the big tech companies pushing this during the holidays, know how gullible American's can be. As Christians, take the time to "let the REAL merger begin, with your Savior's heart in yours." That's the best high-tech merger of all. www.sueduffield.com

Rabbinic representation gets the Hollywood treatment in the new Netflix romantic comedy series "Nobody Wants This," about atheist podcaster Kristen Bell falling for rabbi Adam Brody. Lindsey + Amber initially scheduled this episode in an effort to deconstruct social norms about Christmas and Hanukkah, which ultimately led them down a foxhole to discover the concept of Chrismukkah. Chrismukkah is a pop-culture portmanteau neologism referring to the merging of the holidays of Christianity's Christmas and Judaism's Hanukkah. What The Fox?!® brought return guest speaker Jay Tinsley from Ep. 6 and Ep. 25 to talk allll about it - but only under the condition that he bring his better half: Nina Tinsley - to come celebrate and educate about interfaith marriage during the holidays. Once upon a time, the swastika had no correlation to hate. It is, in fact, a millennia-old symbol of well-being and hope. It has been used—and continues to be used—by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and many other Eastern religions as a sacred symbol in homes and temples. After its image to Western eyes became tarnished in the 20th century, its origins have fallen wayside—but a recent push to keep its original meaning intact aims to change that. To discuss the shift, Rev. Dr. T. Kenjitsu Nakagaki, a Buddhist priest and the author of The Buddhist Swastika and Hitler's Cross: Rescuing a Symbol of Peace from the Forces of Hate, joins Bonjour Chai to discuss the critical differences between the original swastika and what's been dubbed "Hitler's cross". And on the topic of symbolism, we look at Hanukkah merch: mugs with phrases like "Joy Vey", greeting cards joking "Fa La La La Latke", dreidel-shaped waffle irons and more. Where did this stuff come from? Who buys it? Rabbi Yael Buechler and writer David Zvi Kalman join to dissect whether the trend is a symptom of late-stage capitalism or a stab at religious equity. Plus, we give a nachas shout-out to graffiti artist @aperism and bid farewell—and good luck—to longtime hosts David and Ilana, who are embarking on a new podcast adventure in the new year. Credits Bonjour Chai is hosted by Avi Finegold, Ilana Zackon and David Sklar. Zachary Kauffman is the producer and editor. Michael Fraiman is the executive producer. Our theme music is by Socalled. Michele Kriegman born Suzanne Gilbert is a storyteller by nature but she was missing her own backstory well into adulthood. Finding her birth-father helped complete it. She worked for many years in U.S. and Japanese journalism, including ABC News, iVillage.com, Lilith, Maine Public Radio, NYT Nippon TV's morning show, . More recent journalism has been for cybersecurity publications such as Info Security Professional. Michele is an adoptee who searched successfully for her birth-father in New York before the state opened its records. She reclaimed her birth-name, Suzanne Gilbert, to write the novel, Tapioca Fire, that is the prequel to The Birth-Fathers' Club. She teaches writing workshops for adoptees and donor-conceived people finding their #ownvoices. She speaks on panels for social workers, adoptive families, and intentional parents about birthright issues. Her approach, though well-researched, isn't academic or clinical; she's been an in-the-trenches adoptive stepmom too. Most recently, a DNA test kit that came as a Chrismukkah present, revealed a sister! Their shared birth-father, and his complex effort at redemption later in life, inspired the story in one of the novellas. Music by Corey Quinn

More recent journalism has been for cybersecurity publications such as Info Security Professional.Michele Kriegman is an adoptee who searched successfully for her birth-father in New York before the state opened its records. She reclaimed her birth-name, Suzanne Gilbert, to write the novel, Tapioca Fire, that is the prequel to The Birth-Fathers' Club. She teaches writing workshops for adoptees and donor-conceived people finding their #ownvoices. She speaks on panels for social workers, adoptive families, and intentional parents about heritage equality. Her approach, though well-researched, isn't academic or clinical; she's been an in-the-trenches adoptive stepmom too. Most recently, a DNA test kit that came as a Chrismukkah present, revealed a sister! Their shared birth-father, and his complex effort at redemption later in life, inspired the story in one of the novellas.Connect with her athttps://www.facebook.com/michele.kriegmanhttps://twitter.com/ReunionLand1) Rock Memoir:Book 1 of The Birth-Fathers' Club SeriesFrom Amazon UK/Ireland: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3olbMpPFrom Amazon Australia: https://www.amazon.com.au/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Amazon Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Independent Bookshop US: https://bookshop.org/a/78945/97817379477072) From a Desert City by the Sea:Book 2 of the Birth-Fathers' Club SeriesFrom Amazon UK/Ireland: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Amazon US: https://amzn.to/3Hk6vHJFrom Amazon Australia: https://www.amazon.com.au/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Amazon Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/Michele-Kriegman/e/B09HSPD895From Independent Bookshop US: https://bookshop.org/a/78945/9781737947714
Aaron and Tommy discuss The O.C.'s first Chrismukkah episode. Happy Holidays from us at Queers & Soaps!
“Hanukkah is not always right around Christmas... yet the two holidays have kind of become analogous to one another in the US.”— Rachel GreenblattIn an atmosphere where Christmas steals the spotlight and occupies the airwaves, can Hanukkah find appreciation as a meaningful holiday that explores multiple powerful themes relevant to our modern world?Does the religious fusion practiced by interreligious families (such Chrismukkah celebrations) dilute the meaning of both holidays or create a new space for deepened faith? And does the practice of gift giving take away from the intended meaning of Hanukkah? This episode of the Living Jewishly podcast is an instalment of What Would You Do?, a podcast about Judaism and ethics. Dr. Elliot Malamet and guests Rachel Greenblatt and Jeffrey Goldwasser investigate the ethics of our approach to winter holidays, how we can hold onto our religious identities while integrating new traditions, and where to find balance in the rise of holiday consumerism. The guests for this episode are Rachel Greenblatt, a digital culture editor at Insider, and Jeffrey Goldwasser, the spiritual leader of Temple Sinai in Cranston, Rhode Island. “There's no doubt that Hanukkah gift giving has become a more significant marker of the holiday.”— Jeffrey GoldwasserThis episode discusses: ✔ Why and how gift giving became such an important part of Hanukkah — and the role that Christmas has played in this✔ How to hold onto our identity and navigate the integration of new traditions into our holidays✔ Why it's important to tie the teachings of Hanukkah into how we experience our modern world Highlights: 00:51 Intro03:13 Rachel Greenblatt & gift giving05:32 Bringing more joy to the holiday09:19 Shift to a more “fun” Judaism11:58 Consumerism & compensation13:35 Navigating identity17:28 Jeffrey Goldwasser & gift giving20:11 Holidays & capitalism22:48 Hanukkah & the modern world25:24 December dilemma28:50 Interreligious families & inclusion37:07 Identity, dating & pressure46:44 OutroLinks: To get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly: Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.org Follow us on Instagram: @living.jewishly Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw or send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.org. He may be from New Delhi, but Deadpool actor Karan Soni knew that California is where he had to come, ever since he first watched The OC. That's right the teen drama that ruled the aughts set Karan on the path that led him to being an actor. The show taught him everything from the true meaning of Chrismukkah to the English language. This episode of Fanaddicts will give you more feels than Seth and Summers Spider-Man Kiss from Season 2!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Okay, Karen, how about you take your toxic positivity and drivelous platitudes back to Hobby Lobby and stop misinterpreting Jeremiah 29:11? Thanks. This week, Amanda and Christina have a special guest from inside the house--Brandon, Amanda's husband! The squad discusses the unintentionally harmful messages they received as children and teens (and young adults) in the church regarding life's "purpose" and the "plan" that God "has for your life." If you're a seminary drop out, former Christian Studies major, or former youth-pastor-wannabe, this is definitely the episode for you. Listen as the hosts unpack what it means to lead a purposeful life and find your calling (if such a thing even exists.) As always, thank you for listening! Please rate, review and subscribe to Dear God, What the Hell?! wherever podcasts are found (but especially Apple Podcasts.) All we want for Chrismukkah is you...r subscription and for you to share us with your friends. You can also follow and chat with us on Instagram and Twitter. This week, Amanda recommends you learn more about yourself by reading "The Road Back To You" by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile, and remembering none of us knows what is truly good or truly bad in life while watching Aaron Weiss's "Horse Story." Meanwhile, Christina recommends you order a boxed set of A Game for Good Christians (for holidays, we love mixing the AGFGC deck with our Cards Against Humanity deck!) and Brandon recommends you recognize the calling of the church by reading the book of Acts from the New Testament, and then get your life together by reading "Designing your Life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, and "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life" by Mark Manson. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deargodwth/message

Jackie celebrates Chrismukkah early by spreading joy (not) on all things festive and annoying.
